GPS issues - ZTE Nubia Z17 Questions & Answers

Hi, I'm new on this forum, also please forgive my english.
I resently bought a nubia z17 phone from geekbuying, 6/64. Model number NX563J, software NX563J_CNCommon_V2.44
I'm having problems with the GPS, for example I open google maps and it says that I'm in other location. The GPS is on, high precision (any mode has the same problem).
Any solution? Thanks.

I can confirm I have the same problem with the same phone on the Mokee rom. Somehow the location gets stuck on an old location. What I do is open Google Maps and tell it to navigate somewhere, and that updates my phone's location. I haven't found a permanent solution yet.

Have you tried another GPS app ? (Waze, Here we go, Osmand,...)

Yes, i tried Waze and it keeps trying to find the GPS signal but it never does. Aldo tried GPS test, and it doesn't show any activity from the GPS.

Problems with the GPS

I have tried the GPS now for a while and I cant get it to work. I use TomTom 7
I have had it outside for atleast 4-5 minutes and it cant find any satellites
Is there anything I have to do to get it to work?
It only says "Searching for GPS-satellites"...
Hello, what is the version of radio have you got ?
Have you test with Google Maps if the GPS get satellites ?
Look at this post if you find a solution

Normaly no. Just active it for very bad reception satellites i think.
the gps uses the file you get with quickgps to faster identify the satellites. after 3 days (i think) the file is out of date. if the file is out of date the gps part dose the identification and cycles through the satellites. this can take up to several minutesl. try to activate quickgps und you will get a much faster fix.
I don't think his problem is about getting a faster fix or not.
He's GPS function just does not work properly and cannot read properly the datas received from the satellites, if it ever receives some...
I know the problem because i'm having exactly the same trouble with my Diamond right now, and I even started a thread about this.
You can read it also as a reference if you want.
I used to own a Trinity before, so I can tell without any doubt that there is something wrong with the GPS function on some Diamond, and it is not just a problem of waiting longer or so.
I read the experience from other users and only some radical measures have managed to make their GPS 'wake up' for good:
- erasing the old GPS log files stored in the phone
- taking the battery out of the phone for more than one day and then try to reset it again
- many hard resets and flashing
etc.
If someone who was having the same kind of major GPS problems (GPS not detected at all, Satellites not localized at all etc.) can tell us how he managed to wake his GPS up, that would be great.
With Google Maps you have a GPS Fix or not ? What soft do you use for GPS ?
Perhaps you can test with this soft if it active a good signal. Efficasoft GPS Utilities for Pocket PC
I finally found a solution to wake up my sleeping (beauty) GPS.
The most helpful infos were in that post below, but I did pick other datas here and there.

The funniest thing is that this problem looks like a hardware one, but in fact it's all software related. A problem of configuration, due to the A-GPS function probably.
From what I understand, if you use A-GPS (I mean if you really have access to this special service through your phone operator) everything is fine.
If you don't, then you may get into big troubles like I and many others did...
1) make sure A-GPS function is desactivated (nothing to do with the Quick GPS function)
2)
... just follow the instructions provided by the Oijkn on the link above.
3)
delete as well the file(s) GPSlogs.txt in the windows directory
4)
soft reset
5)
enjoy a very efficient GPS
Thanks everyone, now it works
It seems to be a problem with the A-GPS
Ok i'm happy for you if all it's good
Hi, the link to the post of Oijkn doesn't work, would you mind describing the procedure step by step to improve the GPS performance?
Thank you

hello excuse for my poor english (i'm french).
1 - Soft reset your PPC
2 - Find the file “xtra.bin” (dans \windows et \temp)
3 - Delete the file “xtra.bin”
4 - Reboot your PPC
5 - Prove that there is no more validity of GPSRapide.
(don't download the update)
6 - Try with TT7 now to pick up satellites
7 - If TT7 still does not work put has GPSRapide day by downloading the updating.
PS: Or try in manuel settings, Bauds 57 600 / COM : 4
You can try to launch Google Maps and activate the GPS signal then wait 1 or 2 minutes for the fix.
And then try with TOMTOM, i think with the two solution it's will work fine for you

Hi, how can I make sure that the A-GPS is deactivated?
I desactivated it automatically using a soft called 'Diamond Tweak'.
(I only have a French version of this soft, but if you make a research, you should find the English one)
Otherwise, you might be able to find this tweak in some other post, or in the wiki, as a registry key you can manually edit.

no GPS signal

Hi. i've just bought a X1. after installing garmine mobil xt, but i cant get any gps signal. any one that knows how or what i've done wrong?. I've tried to use seriell port and the intemediant but whith no luck. Please any one

Same here had problems inside the TT7 but outside works like a charm.
Run app called QuickGPS, installed by default (you should have icon in programs). It downloads small file with actual settings of GPS satelites. My X1 couldnt fix position too, but after updating this db it works like charm. I get position in less than 30s
it's not a x1 gps thing that it don't work indoors thats a std gps thing
i use tomtom and it never have any problem

that's because you haven't enable GPS in Google Maps, but instead are using Cell Tower estimations for your location.

GPS X9601

GPS problems
Ok so I have a North American GSM x9501...
Never used the GPS (Telenav isn't available to Canadian residense). This device is unlocked and NOT purchased from Rogers...
Downloaded Google maps, tried to use GPS and it wouldn't work. Set the settings manually Com4 57600 baud... It says searching for satalites, and has some HUGE number (54357734578) in brackets... GPS doesn't work.
Installed the HTC GPS tool, looks like GPS data is coming in, but can't get a fix. Then tried to use GPSgate, and it says GPS data is coming in but cannot get fix. Both of these two apps can't find any satalites.
Does anyone know what is up?

yep, go out in middle of a field or open Terrace or any place where you can see the sky above you head directly and then start google maps with GPS or HTC GPS tool or GPS gate etc , wait 3-5 min and then it should have fix...
cheers
I've given is some time... Probably over 5 minutes...
It's just odd, I have lots of experiencing using GPS software and devices. It looks like it should be working, the only odd behaviour is:
1) It finds no satalites
and
2) Google Maps says "Seeking Satalites (3874732644)" which is odd, because theres not that many GPS satalites, lol.
Change the Baud Rate to 9600 and see whether it will work.
Tried different baud rates.
Yesterday I let it sit for 15 minutes on google maps until finally it said there was no reception...
And I know I have reception because I was outside. Both my TytN II and HP iPaq have no trouble aquiring fix's...
download free VISUALGPS CE and install. Then connect it to COM4 and press start.
See the NMEA log monitor section. You should see lot's of data, if not, your GPS might be bad.
I'm unsure if your 9501 will work with the ROM's we use in Europe to make calls, and have GPS enabled.. If it's OK, I would flash Thai Hugo's Age of Reason and check again your GPS.
I'm using the factory ROM for the X9501 (Which does support GPS off the bat).
I used the HTC tool, and it looked like NMEA data was going through...

On the HTC tool there is option to see the satellites , check if its has any satellites on red color, if so keep the shift out in terrace or garden until 3 satellite color changes to green , have patience....
if it does not show any satellite on the HTC tool then probably you need to flash the rom with some new rom from the forum ..
Before you do that make a copy of your Stock/original rom ..see forum for instruction
PS: Since you have the stock / orginal rom X9501....would you do me a favour and check if you connect to head set and on Windows mobile side WM6, can you record a message and then play back and you can hear your self back .... I wanted to know if the mic works with head set on WM6 side...for the Stock 9501 ROM.
Cheers.

Can I ask another favour , do you have any registry editor installed on you shift.
if so , can try to dump/export the registry settings for HKLocalMachine (HKLM) to a xml ot reg file and then copy / upload the xml/reg file here .
we want to use head set with X9500 shift and are trying to find a solution , may be its a reg setting that can fix the problem.
Appreciate your kind help

Nope , the issue is we cannot use the head set in WM6 as the mic on Head set does not work....so we have to use the speaker phone and its not good for phone calls private or business.
I would appreciate if you can help us to resolve the issue , if you can dump the reg keys for HKLM / Drivers/inbuilt ... it might give us some direction.
Appreciate your support.

What software are you using? you may get a faster answer if you mention it
i dont think you can calibrate GPS..
you updated quickfix?
thanks for your answers, I'm using Garmin XT and google maps, then I don't think it is the software.
quickfix? sorry I don't know what is it, I will check now
ahh quickfix is the same as quickgps, yes I'm using it!
Does it just happen lately? Maybe hard resetting would help.
thanks but not really.
well I have my HD for already 6 month but I just start trying the GPS in the last 2 weeks, because I'm in China and was difficult to find a good GPS software for Asia, but I hard reset it couple of times since I start using it.
It might be a hardware issue. You may send it to a distributor center to check.
I was hoping it was not a hardware problem, because it always shows me like 250m to the south west, it's not a random problem.
any idea?
thanks!!
It's very difficult for the GPS "engine" itself to consistently report a position with such a fixed error.
I once saw a similar sort of error when I was using some GPS software which had the MAP DATUM set incorrectly.
Is it possible to change this setting on your software ?
Good luck,
- Steve

Hi, sirrick1.
Nothing wrong with your GPS hardware/Software.
As required by Chinese goverment, all GPS map data should be added a deviation. ie. if you want to use a GPS coodirates that get from GPS hardware directly to locate where you are in map, you may find location is shifted.
Anyway, you can get more information from chinese gps forums.

i tot from history there was a air incident caused by purposely inaccurate GPS and the authorities ( not talking about china ) decide to not hamper the raw signals..
btw from what i know of GPS, you are caculating based from a few sats in space.. so is it possible in maths to get constant SW 250 results? not sure ... i am not a mathy.. anyone?

The shift algorithm is a goverment secret, and the shift value is diffrent in one area from another.
So, it is hard to get/infer the exactly algorithm. So far as I know, the only succeful method to "correct" map coordinate is table look-up that is can get relative "real" values.
it's caused by the MAP it Self
not hardware or the software
May not be due to your GPS hardware.
I have the same problem with my MapKing Navi software, it's off by about 20m. I know it's the software problem, was the same on my iPaq previously. So you may want to find out if your software has the same problem on a device of a different brand.
in china the map are offset by 250m by government for unclear reason, on garmin you need to apply a patch to fix it, what's not clear it's google map, min is working well.
well I tried the patch, which is only a file (006B082300.bin) which must be copied to the folder containing the map, but the problem reminds!!
anyone has success on this?
I had similar problem on motorola a1000 running SmartcomGps, which uses maps in .ogf format. I have great maps made by army cartographers, calibrated precisely, and gps device kept missing position by 100 meters. I also thought that is army's stupid trick in case enemy obtain maps to be deliberately inaccurate. Tried recalibration, succeeded, but still not satisfied, kept googling for days and finally found the solution: on calibration, all maps are assigned with datum WGS84 by default. Changed it to Eastern Europe and bang! - device is locking position dead accurately.
Try this:
Start program, load map, then tap Map/Calibrate/Settings/Map Datum. Choose datum "South Asia" or "Hu-Tzu-Shan" or any other you might think is for your part of China. Try it, if it doesn't work properly then try some other one and do so untill you find proper one. Don't waste your time (and risk screwing something up) with patches, flashing different ROMs etc. Both your hardware and software are OK, just need correct setting.

Hello! I have the same problem. But I found a strange thing.
In the past when I used Froyo, GPS found my location with several satellites in use (more then 3). But now I see that it may found my location without any satellites in use. It's seems that something is broken because it's needed minimum 3 satellites to find the location.

If GPS finds your location without any satellites the only explenation is that the phone uses internet connection to find your location. Maybe that is the case.

When your wifi is on (even if you're not connected to any network) your location can be determined to about 50m about
the networks near your location. At least in Germany. I think it's maybe through the google cars which also check the wifi networks when they took pictures for street view.

Are you in flight-mode while using GPS, connected to Wifi or to mobile networks (2G,3G)?
I use GPS mostly in flight-mode, and it still takes some minutes (5-10) to get a fix. Even with updated AGPS-data, but with no internet connection (afterwards, waiting for the fix).
Maybe you can show me your gps.conf from the /etc/ folder?
