Significant upgrade over Moto x 2013 - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hello friends,
I am considering purchasing a new moto g5 plus, but was wondering from anyone in the know if it would be worth the $180-230 price tag attached to it (I've seen it on sale a couple times) as a reasonable upgrade over my current phone. I have a moto x 2013 model, and my phone is almost old enough for kindergarten. If not, I may wait another 5-6 years for middle school.
Thanks

Moto G discontinued (Flipkart confirms remaining stock is the last)

Moto G2 is set to be announced on the September 4 event internationally, Indian announcement to follow on September 5 at New Delhi. It was a question whether Motorola would discontinue the moto g in favor of G2. Flipkart now announced that they are conducting the sale [of the] last stock of Moto G. So it is confirmed that the Moto G will be discontinued and its place will be taken by the Moto G2.
Moto G has been hugely successful in India. Moto announced that it sold over 1 million handsets through Flipkart till June. Moto is now the 4th biggest smartphone company in India, ahead of Nokia. They achieved this by just 3 handsets, most of the nmbers is because of Moto G.
Moto recently slashed Moto G’s price by Rs.2000 due to recent increase in competition (read Xiaomi Mi 3 and Asus Zenfone 5), making it more attractive for buyers and a nicer deal. Moto G 8gb model recently got out of stock recently and have not been replenished till now. It is to be expected that it was the last stock of Moto G 8gb version. Now, with Flipkart’s ‘Get yours before it’s gone!’ sale, it might be your last chance to get a Moto G.
Moto G2 has been in news and leaks for some time. In case you don’t know, G2 is said to feature a 5-inch 720p display with the same snapdragon 400 processor coupled with 1GB ram. Camera units might be a 5 or 8 megapixel primary with 2 megapixel secondary. It is also said to feature dual front speakers like the htc One. The price might be slightly higher than the Moto G.
Moto G 16gb is set to go out of stock soon and will be permanently unavailable soon. Flipkart is also offering 50% off on Moto G accessories in favor of clearing out stock. It is the best and last time you can get your Moto G, Buy it now or never!

I suppose the good news is that Moto G 2 appears to be essentially the same hardware as Original Moto G. That should mean it won't take much more work for Motorola to create versions of Android 'L' that work on both devices.
I don't care if this or that is discontinued, I just wish my little fellow gets a taste of Android L... Hope to see a new notification saying "New system update available".. That's all I want.. :crying:
Android L will be the last system update for moto g for sure.. In the future, when android M and N comes out, we will have to look at Cyanogen to have a new custom firmware...
Well, this is sad, because this device is highly known and a great quality device. I think it deserves to get android L at least, and for future updates we cant rely on Cyanogenmod, because currently do not have a high support. I dont know who this guy Ethan Chen is,but i know that dhacker is a great dev,and his support was better. I'm 99.9% shure that he would port L and future updates if he was an offical maintainer.
So in conclusion,we just need barebone android L image and the majority of us will be satisfied.
The Moto G will get the Android L upgrade and i guarantee it. Motorola is still not fully with Lenovo yet. And i read since that Moto's software is near AOSP it should be easy for them to upgrade us soon, but since the Moto G2 is coming out we may get it like a week or two later. Remember how we got kitkat on December 24 even though Motorola said it was coming early 2014 or something like that?
bummer... many people have bought moto g on my recommendation. they are going to kill me.
lets hope android l is in cards and custom roms continue to flourish... cant upgrade my phone yearly

That's true, since this is a worldwide well known device, it should receive L, because it would be a great hit between customers. But if you think, maybe if falcon is discontinued, for Motorola won't be necessary to upgrade the device to L since moto g won't be available anymore.
But, if Motorola wants to be recognized as one of the best device maintainers talking about updates, they must consider upgrade falcon to L. Then, Motorola users, with no doubt, will gen a moto in the future instead of buying another phone.
Larger screen on g2 with same resolution translates to lower PPI. Only significant change is the camera.
I actually bought the g for the smaller screen and 720p quality . I already have the s3 and s4 which are slightly uncomfortable to hold in one hand due to their larger screens . I also have the moto e which is as good as the g. You won't find much difference in the moto g and e for daily use except if you need the front camera for video calls then moto g does not have it . Sorry for being slightly OT .
moto g will get android l

They aren't discontinuing it until they release the Moto G2. So it isn't like you won't be able to get one for the same similar price and hardware.

Yes they are (May be in India for now), Flipkart is the exclusive online retailer for Moto g in India. They confirmed and is now selling the last stocks they have from Moto. **sale is still going on**

Yes, and the Moto G2 is coming out in a few weeks. So there is no great loss. This is what happens when new generations of phones come out.

isn't it a loss for someone looking for a good small sized handset? Not everyone is the fan of a 5-inch device.Right?

Sure. But if the phone size itself is the same, I think most people will be fine with it.
So one company announces it will stop selling Moto G's in favour of the G2 and the community think that is equivalent to the G being discontinued? Oh, by the way, here in the UK, carphone warehouse have listed the Moto G in their stores as "new". Just for the record.

May be. But the leaked images shows a slightly bigger phone right? Bezels are also not that thin like G3. So how can you expect a device of similar size?

All Moto G 2014 Owners Please Read

Hello, i just wanted bring all of you together to read this thread. Ok so i know since you've been a Moto owner, you've heard or seen at least once insulting comment about your device or the Motorola company. For example, "Anything that Motorola makes sucks" "People only get them because they're cheap" "That phone is crappy". I know that those people are ignorant to other people's liking. I'm tired of hearing the same thing. A lot of people that own super expensive high end- flashy smartphones say things like that about devices like the Moto series. Well that really offends me, just because they might not be the most high-end smartphones or the most expensive smartphones doesn't mean they are worthless. We Moto owners take great pride in our device, we appreciate what we have and we value our smartphones.
If someone offered me a brand new Galaxy S6 and a brand new Moto X and said i could only pick one. I would pick the Moto X hands down without a doubt in my mind. Because I know, We know what matters in a smartphone. What is that? User experience and performance for the price. That's what a review comes down to at the end of the day. A company could make a super spec'd out smartphone but get the same review score as a phone a fraction of its cost. I know if i were to buy a $1000 smartphone it better be great in every aspect and i know if i bought a smartphone for half that price, i'm not expecting it to be perfect but i want to have a good performance. That's exactly what motorola does, it gives you a great performing phone for the price.
For example, the Moto G. It has a low price point but does everything you need it to do. If I want a super powerful gaming machine of a smartphone, I'm not going to buy the Moto G. Then give a bad review for not being able to do what i wanted it to. I'm gonna buy a smartphone with a powerful chipset. At the end of the day we Moto owners stand out. Other people don't seem to understand our taste in smartphones value. Im not saying if you own a super expensive phone you're a bad person or anything. I'm just saying you get what you pay for. All of you Moto owners, good job in picking a smartphone. It doesn't matter if you have a Moto E, a Moto G or a Moto X. We all are equal and unified. #Teammoto
Proof that price doesn't matter
I Roughly agree with you. But the thing about the Moto X (Which i like very much, hopy one day i will get one) and the Galaxy S6 is not true. Obviously you didn't tried the S6. I tried the Moto X too and I must say the S6 is better than the Moto X. Moto X is a very nice phone, but you just can't compare with the flagship device from 2015 worth 800 euros (or whatever the price is now).
It will be more appropriate to compare with the S5 because both of these devices are from 2014. Here you can say that the Moto X is the absolute winner. The S5 is a laggy piece of sh-t compared to S6 which is very smooth and sophisticated. You can even find videos on youtube comparing S5 with the Moto G and in most cases the Moto G is faster than the S5 lol.
Don't forget DROID Turbo from 2014

Moto G 2015 the last of it's kind?

Lenovo announced on CES that for the future they are planning to focus on the high end market with the Moto brand and are probably going to discontinue the Moto E and Moto G in favour of Lenovo's Vibe brand.
Source: http://www.androidauthority.com/mot...print-sensors-for-all-phones-5-inches-667021/
Yeah seems like moto g has gone, which unfornatelly was one of the best in this category of budget phones what is sad, I think for now the only way is the Nexus line or one PLUS which are a little more expensive..
"Although we are simplifying the combined Motorola and [Lenovo] portfolio, we have no plans to retire Moto G, our most successful smartphone, or Moto E," a Motorola representative says.

Yes, there'll never be another 2015 Moto G, because - guess what? It'll never be 2015 again
Obviously they had to backtrack a bit when that spokesperson's comments were taken out of context: as stated, the Moto G is the most successful smartphone Motorola ever created over the 3 generations so far, there's no way in hell they would ever just totally dismiss the mid-range market the Moto G tends to basically rule in at this point.
I just got a Moto G3 today, not a bad device overall, not bad at all. Not sure if I'll keep it or go so far as to unlock it but so far it's decent, nice performance as well. I'm very familiar with the Snapdragon 400 series and the battery life, I had an LG Tribute last year and was easily getting 9 hours of SOT with it consistently so I figure with a few tweaks I should get something very similar with this Moto G - that is if I decide to keep it.
Motorola's official statement, if anybody is interested:

As long as they continue firmware support for the current models I'm alright with all this.

what is the most comparable to the Moto X Pure

My uncle right now has the G5 and he says he hates it. he likes my phone alot but i said to him there are others that are newer and probably better (not to say i wouldnt tell him to buy the moto x pure, but that he has alot of options with gsm compared to sprint). He has Tmobile for now so i guess any GSM that is closest to the moto x and unlocked. what would you recommend and why?
he said specifically he likes my phone because of the feel of the phone, the lightness and the speedy os.
personally i dont like recommending him things like Huawei or ZTE because im suspicious of chinese made phones but i want to hear what you have to say
ZTE Axon 7 is a pretty solid device... I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of those, or the Axon 7 Mini as a replacement for the Moto G series devices.
Another good choice would be the OnePlus 3T.
Most other devices by Samsung and LG are too bloated and skinned to heavily for my taste, I hesitate to recommend them.
I really like the HTC 10, goes back to my first real Android "love", but it's a bit pricey. The Google Pixel line is great, but again they are pricey and sometimes tough to find in stock.
Remember that retailers like Best Buy and B&H Photo still carry the Moto X Pure in stock for $299-$349.
Mobile world congress is literally in a few days (Feb 27). See what is available after that. Personally I'm looking forward to the Moto G5 (an upgrade to the Moto G4 which is also a great phone) which I will probably purchase for my wife. The Moto G5 plus is supposed to have a Sony IMX362 camera sensor which is really great, battery-sipping Snapdragon 625, and a 5.2" screen (my wife doesn't like big screens) so I think it'll be awesome. Plus it's Motorola so it'll have little to no bloat.
Honestly I'm surprised that your uncle hates the LG G5, it's a flagship after all with a snapdragon 820 and 4GB ram it should be pretty snappy. At least comparable to the Moto X Pure. He should just keep his phone, maybe wipe it and start fresh or try a new ROM if possible.
Also, hate to break it to you, Motorola is owned by Lenovo which is Chinese. I think Apple Samsung and LG are the only non-Chinese smartphones left.
I thought the latest rumors were the G5 would have the 5.2" screen and the G5 Plus is a 5.5".
Personally, after seeing how Lenovo treats updates/upgrades on my Moto G 2015 and X Pure over the last year, I will likely not buy another Moto device... Really it's a Lenovo device with the Moto name on it (Lenovo has confirmed ALL their smartphones will soon be carrying the Moto name). I am sure the G5 will be a decent device, but Lenovo has ruined it for me. Especially since I see my son's Axon 7 Mini gets regular security updates every single month only a week or two old.
@acejavelin Honestly the problem is Lenovo just doesn't care about the phones that were already in production before they purchased Motorola. Their newer phones that have launched since the merger ( Moto g4, Moto z) have had excellent support. Yes I'm a bit upset about the lack of support too but that's just how life goes sometimes. Have you tried lineageOS yet? I'm running the latest nightly and it's fantastic. Android 7.1.1, extremely fast, everything works well, 3+ hours SOT (up from 2.5 on stock marshmallow). lineageOS also comes unrooted so you can still use apps that don't like root (like pokemon Go).
As far as the G5 rumors, the latest rumors are 5.0" screen for the G5 and 5.2" screen for the G5 plus. Both full HD. Snapdragon 430 for the G5 and 625 for the G5 plus.
I actually went with the Axon 7. It's a really solid device. Runs really smooth good battery life. Very inexpensive compared to other flagship devices. The only thing I don't like about it, is that its not technically supported by Verizon. It's a nightmare to try to change anything with them.

is it worth buying in 2017?

I am currently moto g2 user. and since using moto phones I can't buy any other phone but moto. as my budget is very low. So, i was thinking to buy moto g4+ that suits my budget. so should i go for it?

Umm I Have Both Moto G3 and G4 Plus ( Die Hard Moto Fanboy Had a G2 Too ) I Feel Moto is Losing There Unique Design Language That Made It Standout from Chinese Brands and Also G4+ Has A Lot on Heating Issues ( Worse than It Sounds ) and Depending on What Type Of Phone You Get (its a Lottery) You are Gonna Face Burn-in or Ghost Touch Issues So If You Are Into Custom ROMs Than I Would Suggest Buy G3 Instead Of G4+ Its Not Worth It Development Is Equally Good if Not Better and If You Do End Up Buying a G4+ Make Sure to Protect That Camera Lens Gets Scratched Up Too Easily
Otherwise Miso (RN4) Does Exists

imo, if you can help it, stay away from Motorola. They've been really shoddy about updates for all their phones, including the G4. There have also been issues regarding ghost touches/screen failures, but nearly every phone has its share of issues and the G4 is not unique in this regard.
If you plan to root/ROM your phone, the G4 is not a bad choice as there are a variety of ROMs to choose from, as well as decent support.
Even if you do purchase a G4+, don't spend more than $200 USD on it. Any more than $200, and you can get vastly better phones such as the Nexus 5X, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3/4, and the Huawei Honor 6X.

Well, don't forget that the Nexus 5X also has the bootloop issue.
If you want to root and ROM, I heartily recommend the 2015 X/X Pure if you can afford it. Or the OnePlus 2.
But, if you're going to stay on stock, get a Nokia 6 (or whatever other phones they have). Stock Android with super fast updates.
My previous phone was an iPhone 4. I am very happy with my G4+ and they can be had for a $200 for the 64GB model. There are many well supported ROMs to choose from. Most OEM update support sucks...a friend of mine dropped $700 on his Galaxy S7 and is in 7.0 with the February security patch. Due to fantastic developer (thank you OAdam11 for Tesla) support, I am running 7.1.2 with the May 5 security update. I would recommend it.
Redmi note 4x(Snapdragon ) except bootloader unlocking is difficult to somebody ( not for me), definitely better than g4plus.I had both ,but as per development and MIUI , Redmi note 4x is my choice for your budget.

I bought a second hand one for gps use last month and ended up using it as my primary device. I also have a Moto x play and kumia (pointless). I bought it for 140usd - 9000inr. The back camera lens is scratched a bit but there is no other issue. Photos are clear though. The phone is very nice and it doesn't heat up for me as many people say. Gets fully charged in 1.25 hours. I don't play games so for other use it works awesome.
It is way better than Moto x play which I bought when it released. The camera is good. That can be also an option for you . Or, you can go for Nexus 5x. Price dropped and you can also find a second sale phone for less than 150. If you are so Keen about the quality buy a scratched phone for low price, replace the case housing. It's new.
I have a lumia 640xl which I refurbished under 100usd. It still works charm..
Go for it mate...
I know it's been several months since someone posted something here, but I'm curious to know your opinion on this...
I have just purchased an used Moto G4 Plus XT1644 4GB + 64GB yesterday at B&H Photo in excellent condition (10 out of 10), at least that's how they described it, for $138.50 shipped. It's arriving on Thursday.
I was not aware of its many issues like, heating issues, screen burn in / ghost touches and so on... So now I'm kinda worried about my decision...
My wife had an iPhone 6 and I converted her to a Moto G5 Plus about 3 to 4 months ago. She's very happy with the phone.
I only went with the G4 Plus because of the extra RAM, plenty storage space, external SD card reader and larger screen compared to the G5 Plus (*for the price I paid*). Most importantly, I bought the G4 Plus because it has ElementalX kernel, official Lineage OS support and TWRP as well. The combination of these three kept my Nexus 5 going for 3+ years before it gave up on me a few months ago.
My N5 still works but it randomly shuts down and reboots when using demanding tasks like taking photos or when it heats up. As long as I can keep it frozen (out of the freezer - literally) it works just fine though.
I've been using a crappy $60 Amazon Prime Exclusive phone, the Blu R1 HD on stock Marshmallow + Magisk / Xposed / Gravity Box / N-ify. Performance is fine considering what I paid for it. Thanks to the infamous fire.apk that plagued the R1 HD for months, I managed to get a full refund for that phone today. So I've got a free phone with malware basically.
I really wanted a 5.5" to 6" phone with good dev support on the cheap but as you know, both the G5 Plus / G5S Plus have a smaller 5.2" and very little dev support (compared to the G4 Plus) and they cost quite a bit more.
So I went with lower price, better dev support and slightly bigger screen on the G4 Plus.
What do you guys think?
