So far so good - No overheating while driving or multi-tasking.

For years I have been an avid ASUS buyer and have really never needed to utilize their customer support or warranty program.
THIS IS CLEARLY POOR MANUFACTURING
Backstory and then the results.
I purchased a new Zenphone 4 in September of 2017 and by November of 2017 was having an issue with a dark spot developing and getting larger on the right side of the phone. I called ASUS and was directed to send the phone to them for warranty repair. I was issued an RMA and sent it in. At this point we had loved the battery life so much ordered another one while we waited on the first to be repaired.
The new phone came in and then we were hit with the RMA result of "You dropped and abused your phone". They were able to discern this abuse by a single small scratch on the back of the phone. I tried to put into dispute but dealing with ASUS as I have now found out is impossible.
In March of 2018 the second unit has now developed a very similar spot in the same place. At this point I called ASUS again and they offered to look at the unit again signaling that since their is still a scratch on the first unit they most likely wont do anything still. The second unit was returned to Amazon as they have a wonderful return policy.
Highly irritated with ASUS I took the phone to an electronics expert to tear it apart and find the issue, he was expecting to find poor soldier joint. As luck would have it the phone did not even need to be torn apart, under just the right lighting (Bar light florescent) he noticed that one side of the phone reflected light the way he expected, the other had a distortion. RIGHT WHERE THE SCREEN WAS BURNED.
ASUS has been turning out tons of bad Zenphones. By the best I can find on the internet the problem most likely started with Zenphone 3 and may still be occuring in the Zenphone ? whatever they are up to.
After contacting asus they really did not want to know anything, nor offered to get me in touch with anyone. Once again Amazon to the rescue, the proof provided they forced a return for me.
Final Revue - ASUS as a company is not producing quality since at least the end of the Zenphone 2 and they are not interested in hearing where to improve.

[Q] Problems occurring in batches?

After reading all of the crappy review for the transformer, it looks as if 50% are happy 50% are not.
I am wondering if the problems are occurring in batches because I just ordered mine from American TV and it will probably be here tomorrow or the next day.
A lot of the problems I have found are from the batches that have already been purchased and I don't know what to think.
Two things:
When asus was first bringing these to market, it could the problems are coming from they just naturally skimped on manufacturing quality because they are so damn cheap. Or they had a bad batch to get them to market quickly.
Asus could also just had normal manufacturing quality before and NOW since there is a high demand, newer units may experience worse manufacturing quality. Or they could be better because they knew of the problems.
Hope its not too confusing, what do you guys think? Newer units = worse quality? Older Units = better than newer?
i think logically you could expect the first units to have the most problems, however, we dont know if asus had enough complaints, or realized that there are defects (if there are--aside from software side) to be able to retool and make changes during the assem process to produce better revised hardware.
I actually gave this exact topic a lot of thought a few days ago, i thought about everyones complaints and how it was hit/miss it seemed, and i wondered whether the people that are complaining were truly the "first" adopters and got REV 1 hardware. Obviously, since they are playing with the tab and most of us are anxiously awaiting its arrival i would assume it just may be the case. Heres to hoping that these little glitches were an easy fix at the factory level (but knowing how they operate i doubt its a simple/cheap/quick process, which makes me doubt that the tabs that me and you will receive this week will be any diff from the ones recieved by the people last week and the one prior. the time frame is just too small, but then again, anythings possible).

Definitely have to agree. My guess they are the same and it is so difficult for Asus to actually respond to problems and transfer a fix to the manufacturing of the units. The only real thing I am worried about is the light bleed/dead pixels.
Moreover, the problem seems to be 50-50 and my estimate came from the assumption that there is manufacturing quality loss through increase production speed to meet the high demand. I tend to believe this because of the poor quality control. I am assuming (after reading the post about the guy receiving a 2.2 model) is that they do perform screen quality checks, to a certain extent. Some may have just slipped out.
Lets just hope we get a solid model.
I tend to side with the second poster...it's all about quality control....how many get out the door without their defects being noticed OR....being flagged as a defect.
I've worked around assembly lines all of my life...25+ years and I can understand some defects got through unnoticed....but the question is: when were they noticed and what steps were taken to prevent the same issue from occurring again?
And the second point is valid also....speed equals a mindset of "this one little corner-cutting decision won't make that big a deal in the long run...."
Unfortunately, rushing things to market to fill orders at a breakneck pace means that issues are more likely to get by...that's a fact of life.
When cash is on the line...decisions get made that might not otherwise gotten made.
I hope mine comes today without the glaring errors that I've seen here...crossing my fingers...
My only real complaint is the light bleed. I know it isn't the only device that's had this problem. I remember when I was reading the Evo 4G forums it had a similar problem when it first came out and recently the iPad2 had light bleed issues too.
The light bleed isn't a huge deal, but it is distracting while watching certain tv shows and movies imo.
I've had 3, first one was the very first batch in the UK, arrived mid April or thereabouts. The next one was around the end of April and the the latest one I received around the 6th of May.
1) Mid April
Some lightbleed on 3 of 4 edges. Perfect screen in terms of pixels. Imbalanced speakers. No sleep of death in 2 weeks or so. No gap in glass.
2) End April
Terrible lightbleed. 14+ stuck pixels (I gave up counting). I think the speakers were imbalanced too. No sleep of death, but only used it for a few minutes. No gap in glass was noticed.
3) Start of May
Some lightbleed, probably akin to 1. Around 8 or so stuck pixels, seen on black screen. Perfectly balanced speakers. Had 1 incident of the sleep of death within 5 days. Glass does not fit perfectly on left hand side (gap of 1-2mm allowing dust inside and glass to be lifted by nail)
Had I known what would happen I would now gladly stick with the first! So, from this small sample it seems that in my case the earlier devices were better in some ways but not in others. We'd have to have a huge sample to be able to answer definitively. I still love the tablet though.
I have a first US batch version and it's fine.
This is why I just ordered the Acer. I got mine and had some light bleed. It got worse. The creaking got worse. Now there is a small piece of dust under the screen. It is not very noticeable except on white background but it worries me that in 6 days of ownership it is getting worse. I now see a dust spec under the camera glass.
The edges of all the ports are razor sharp and can take off skin.
I love the weight the price and the ups screen but the build quality is very disappointing. If it was only the light bleed from day one I would keep but I can't handle how much more has happened in 1 week of ownership.
I got a 32 DB Livonia using coupons from staples for only 40 dollars more than a 16gb Asus cost me. The screen in store was quite good. The build quality seemed much better and despite the added weight it seemed more comfortable. To hold given the curved shape. If availability were better maybe I would exchange my Asus but no stock around.
in the end I might just opt for the new galaxy tab as it seems to be most like the load in size and weight.

Just received
I just got the TF in the mail today. It is nice.. but there are some drawbacks from the xoom that I miss.
Xoom felt nicer in my hand and had that led notification. But the screen on the TF is WAAY better.
I do have light bleed in small sections, not terribly noticeable. Speakers are fine. no dead pixels, yet. not really a creaky sound, just when I press harder than normal on the screen. No glass misaligned. I will seal up the beast with a vinyl cover. Screen is responsive, no probs yet.
A bit disappointed
I received my TF this Thursday and was so very happy. After unwrapping it I pressed the power button and I got nothing. I thought OMG it's not working. Then I thought, maybe they didn't have time to charge the battery. So I charged it. I checked on in within a hour and pressed the button and it came on. I began to play with it and realized that after the TF wasn't in use for more than 5 mins the power button whenever pressed didn't wake the TF up... SO i pressed and pressed.. nothing.. so I waited about 30 sec after a press of the button and it came on.. After going thur this over and over I figured it was a defect and I RMA'ed it. I'm hoping that they didn't just push out a product that will have a lot of issues...
Here's my two cents:
Got my TF from Fry's in LA on May 5th. 32GB don't know manf date.
For light bleed - minimal sround the left lower edge and upper right edge. Dark room, bright up full, about a 1mm bleed - very slight and almost unnoticible.
Running latest update with no issues, just updated again today with no issues.
Sometimes after a long sleep it won't power back up with the power button, so I press the vol down and pwr at the same time (shut down) and it shuts down and restarts fine...Seems a sw glitch.
Other than that it's an awesome machine!
Dock - arrived on the 12th. charged up fine, docked fine, no mouse, brick or other issues other than the backspace key is touchy (actually not touchy -takes some effort), but all other keys work well. I think I'll RMA it later depending on how many show in production (I can live with this for now).
Case - had to cut a small hole in bottom to allow charging while case is closed. Otherwise great.
I hope this helps.
BTW, I don't follow these threads too much, so if you need something please PM me.
I feel like I've said this before, but I'm honestly surprised to hear of all of these issues. Mine doesn't seem to have any of them. No gaps around the screen, the glass fits perfectly, the casing for the tablet seems sturdy and doesn't budge at all. There's very little noticeable light bleed, if any. I've never had anything like a "Sleep of Death". I couldn't be happier with the quality of this beast.
EDIT: I should mention I have a 32GB version that I purchased from TigerDirect on Wednesday, got it this past Thursday.
My tablet and dock were among the older units. I had only one instance of SOD and the green screen with the camera issue which has been fixed via firmware update.
The tablet itself appears to be of high build quality, the bezel is secure, no gaps around the screen seal, no dust,no dead pixels, very minimal light bleed that I had to actively look for.
no problems to speak of
eGoing on 2 weeks ownership using various each day.
The only thing a few times I've come back to an unresponsive unit. Then I just held power button down 10 seconds and then rebooted. I take that with a grain of salt.
But. I am not going to update software for another week or so. Until I read more positive reviews
Many problems with mine
I ordered mine from The Best Buy batch on May 22nd, and it came with a not-smooth not-particularly-responsive screen; it then got two light leak spots, the clock disappeared from the menu bar once, and it bricked when I ran the 3.1 update. I sent it back, but I wonder, are the screens really not as smooth or responsive as the Xoom or Acer A500?

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Asus ROG Phone, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Asus ROG Phone is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.

Cover delivered.
So far, I have found a few things that I hope will be better. Connection problems, lack of screen "plastic" as all the others have from the box, USB card reader/usb hub aren't recognized correctly. Only accessible via file management. Lightroom app can't see the reader/USB.
When I get a good cover/case for the phone, I will be able to use it as daily driver, so I'm waiting with more updates. Gaming experience isn't impressive, since there is the connection problem.
Updates:
Just received the asus plastic 3 part cover. And I give the others right. Not worth it!
Anyway, I tried to game again with the cover on. No improvements on the ping. X mode does no difference whatsoever. Or on antutu, x mode raises the score from 299k to 301k.
Hopefully the silicone tpu cover will come to Europe really soon. The asus plastic cover feels like something from wish!

paint peeling off next to volume rocker
I've ordered my OP7Pro on the Community Drop day. Used it with a case from day one. Still, on both sides of the volume rocker the paint (Mirror Gray) peeled off.
Immediately notified the vendor's customer support. They didn't take it really seriously from the start. Needed to follow-up 3 times until they officially answered me. Unfortunately, the response was negative, saying that the peeling off of the paint is not covered by warranty. So, if I want, they can repair it, but I will have to pay the costs.
So, I'm pretty much disappointed by this, since OP is selling this device as a premium one, and this paint peeling off never happened to me before, not even with less premium devices. Also, completely disappointed by how OPS's customer service works and, of course, by their final feedback. Probably my last OP device.
Royal Look & feel
The material used in one plus are of best quality and can be felt by the user as well.
Mine feels and looks like new. No cover, just randoom screen protectors.
Really good overall....but it is HEAVY! I had 6T. The weight is very noticeable. Even in my pocket it is a bit annoying.
Thicker, heavier than the 6T. Can't compare to the 7T...but can imagine that is even lighter than this thing.
Overall build and quality is up there with the best.

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the OPPO Find X2 Pro stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.

I'm not sure what number to rate the heating issues... maybe as low as a 1?
I'm repeatedly finding (on sunny UK summer days with temperatures of 25⁰C or above) that, even if I keep the phone in the shade, it often shuts down to a low power mode because it's overheating. The low power mode, of course, dims the display to such an extent that it's unreadable even in the shade. And I'm not gaming, playing videos or doing anything extreme - just keeping up with emails and other incoming messages.
I've never had a phone do this before (I've just upgraded from a Huawei Mate 20 Pro which never broke a sweat).
p.s. I've just patented the world's first cooled phone cases - you keep them in the freezer and use them like picnic cool bag freezer blocks and suchlike. ?
I've got a replacement device coming tomorrow as I get this overheating and I don't even play games! Hopefully resolves it, or I'll have to change phone as the battery longevity won't be anything if it does it daily.

Thanks for posting this. Can you let us know here whether your replacement phone is better behaved? I know it'll involve sitting outside soaking up the sun but, hey, somebody's got to do it!
So far so good but will monitor over the weekend. It's a July batch phone so don't know if that has helped.
My phone is overheating even in the car with Google maps only [emoji2955] without charging. But I don't know how check batch.

Hi guys, for those whose devices get warm, how much warm does it get. Does it just get luke warm or very hot?. Mine is getting warm at the moment, but it's very hot here in the UK, not sure if this could be the reason but he's notice some warmness.

Ceramic or leather version?
My Ceramic version is keeping it cool quite well while we have 37 degrees in Germany right now. The vegan version on the other hand is dealing with high temperatures even at normal conditions.

Mine certainly gets warm when I'm using it for extended periods or charging it, but it generally doesn't seem significantly different to other phones I've owned over the years.
Here is a link to a helpful page on Oppo's website...

As I wrote earlier in this thread, my phone has been shutting down due to overheating when used outdoors in the current hot weather. It's the ceramic phone, not the veggie leather version, but I do have it in a protective case. So, next time I go out, I'll follow Oppo's recommendation and remove the case to see whether it helps the phone to dissipate heat more efficiently.

As I've just posted in a different reply on this thread, I too have the ceramic version, but I keep it in a protective case. In the following post from Oppo, they suggest not using a case if a phone is tending to overheat, so I'm going to go case-less to see whether that solves the overheating problem... even though Sod's law says that's when I'll drop the phone!

Used the phone in 40°C all day not a problem. Only issue is when the phone is charging on the dash of the car I'm on videocall and the heat is blowing straigth on the phone. Then once I got a overheat notification and I stopped doing all of those things at once. I have the ceramic version. Also I can play cod mobile all day long at max details no problem.

Water resistant? Ip68? Not really.

Or maybe I had a not perfect unit?
I had my oneplus 8 pro since 3 days. Went to the pool and submerged it not more than 50cm for just a few mins. Gently and slowly.
Some fog appeard almost immediately over all the lenses. On the inside part.
Right after the screen started throwing flash lights and the phone was obviously not working fine anymore. After a few more mins the phone died completely.
I dried the phone carefully and waited about 12 hours and it started to work again just fine.
I sent it back to Amazon and replaced with a new one the day after.
But my question is: was just a very unlucky unit? Or?
As a side note, I have been using my other phones (huawei Pxx pro) under water, also at the sea, a LOT of times and also deep, to make nice underwater videos and never had a single problem.
My question is, if you're not a tech writer or something of the sort, why would you purposely submerge your phone in water?
Did you try to dry it out in the microwave? I hear that works.
Worrying, to say the least...
Just had mine under a light rain and it was fine, but after your experience, I wouldn't want to risk emerging it in water, except by accident.
I've seen several videos of people fully submerging the 8 pro in water with zero issues.
With that in mind, I still would never do that with mine on purpose.
"water" vs "chlorinated water" are two different things
Personally, I never saw the appeal of the IP ratings. It's just extra insurance but not a free pass to just dunk it any water or any liquid and expect it to just last.
Using the phone in the water is something I do regularly with my huawei. I recorded amazing underwater landscapes and fishes at the red sea. Never had a single problem.
I will receive my new oneplus 8 pro tomorrow and will try it again. If it will fail again I will just replace it again and try for the third time. If it will fail again for the third time then I will just send it back and choose another phone.
It would be a shame cause I love the oneplus 8 pro. But for me the use underwater is a must. And with an ip68 rating I would expect it to have no problems underwater.
Anyway thanks to Amazon i can test and re-test for free.
I am positive that the units I received was faulty. Will keep this thread updated with the testing of the next units.

On the third replacement you will jump into Amazon blacklist. They will start asking you about many replacements.
They normally do this wirh expensive items. If you keep doing that you might be perma banned.

Water resistance is not the same as water approved
Received the new oneplus 8 pro.
Tested immediately inside my pool. As a side note my pool do NOT have chlorinated water but water with bromium.
Results are interesting:
Submerged gently up to 1.5meters, been swimming with it in my swimsuit, left it on the bottom for more than 30 mins. Everything perfect. No fog on the lenses and no signs of water leaking inside at all.
Then I threw the phone in the pool from an height of about 60/100cm and... Here ya go! Water leaked inside. Fog over the lenses.
It's pretty weird cause I did the same with my p20 pro and p30 pro with zero problems.
I am going to send it back to Amazon again and get another one and test again for the last time.
Like I said, my phone must be able to swim and dive with me without problems. I still hope that my third unit will pass the test cause I consider the oneplus 8 pro the best phone at the moment.
lol
I´m never going to submerging my phone. It´s unnecessary and you never can be sure. I prefer to buy a gopro or similar.
For the same reason I don´t have a smartwatch, It´s not sure and I don´t wanna take off my watch, I go surfing almost everyday and no one smartwatch has 10 ATM resistance, only 5 ATM.

Under water Drone perhaps..........?
I've took mine winning with me for hours, no problems.
My S5 I took in the Pacific when I was in Rarotonga on my honeymoon literally all day, also went a lot deeper than 1m think about 2-3 at times.
The mic ended up blocked but it unlocked after a few days.
Potentially your unit, send it back.
Bare in mind that salt in the ocean can cause problems, kind of like the mic getting blocked on mine, probably others issues too.
To anyone thinking it's just incase you get a splash of water in it, that's wrong, the Sony Z series which I think was the first to get the IP rating, the display model in the shop was submerged all day long and was fully functional day after day I'd say this is a little more than the paltry time that is recommended, believe me an IP rating is earned not just labelled.
The OP should be able to do what he wants within reason.
Keep it to an hour, try not to go over 1m for extended periods of water, salt levels may also play a part.

First phone i used underwater was the S7. I did amazing underwater recordings and never had a single problem. I used to wash it with tap water every time after submerging it in the salty water of the sea.
Tomorrow I will receive my third oneplus 8 pro and test it again. Will keep everyone updated with the results. An. Ip68 rating is no joke and should easily withstand my pool.

Well, IP68 or not, my IP68 smartwatch Huawei GT2 (supposedly 5ATM resistant) died just after one drop in the water. Had to get it exchanged and Huawei after-sales service tried all they could to not 'Honor' the product's obvious defect, even telling me I should better remove the watch when washing my hands... >.<
In other words, I think you might better stick with non-Chinese smartphone brands concerning water resistance, as they have quite a 'stretchable' conception of IP ratings.

I think the answer is just not to submerge your phone in water. IP certified doesn't guarantee you for going swimming with it
