OEM Unlock? - Alcatel Idol 5 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I don't have this phone yet, but was wondering if the bootloader can be unlocked. If it can then it will be possible to root.
Here is a simple guide, if there is anyone here that would like to try. No software required.
http://techbeasts.com/how-to-enable-oem-unlock-on-android-nougat/
If OEM Unlock shows up in the developers options menu.. good news!! If OEM Unlock doesn't show up, then there is no way to unlock the bootloader.
Please let me know if your phone is the Amazon Prime version. The Prime version may be locked down.
Thanks for any replies!

Prime version is indeed locked down. Also, at any point that you change anything on the phone to do anything with the software, Amazon will not provide you updates again.

I was able to unlock developer options in my Amazon version but now what? I'm assuming that the bootloader is now unlocked and theoretically, I should be able to flash a new rom? Problem is, does one exist? Cheers.

Just an FYI that my Prime Version did allow me to activate Developer Options/OEM Unlocking. Next step is trying to find a rom or even flash it to regular factory default. That I have not found yet.

Quick question SDACymru - I'm getting this phone in a few days... how did you perform the OEM unlock in dev options?

The normal way. Just tapping on the option for 5 or 6 times.

Thanks. Is there a reason we shouldn't be able to restore from a backup of a non-ads phone stock image and at least get that running on ad-based versions? From my understanding they are exactly the same hardware-wise, so should be possible...

Being able to expose "Developer option" and access to "OEM unlock" still don't make this is developer-friendly device, but I quite surprised that the Amazon Prime version even show the "OEM unlock" in the "Developer option". Anyway, it is close, if you can also perform the last 2 steps, then this device can be considered as developer-friendly.
The next 2 steps are:
- Reboot into fastboot
- fastboot oem unlock (from adb console)
Some devices with full fastboot implementation can check the device lock state by
- fastboot getvar all
If all these commands work, then the device will have good developer support. In addition, if all these commands work on the Amazon Prime version, then it is a piece of cake to remove the Amazon ads.

did anyone every try any of this? ADB Shell temp root has been achieved on this model, I have the temp root xploit but it's useless unless people know what they are doing with it. You can easily brick your phone. I don't physically have this phone but what I do have is a little knowledge, access to the stock rom and a way to flash it. I also know that the recovery can be swapped with TWRP during that flash process. Hit me up on Telegram: https://t.me/PizzaG

So being that I have actually gained temp root access (all credit to PizzaG, he knows his stuff)
Should I go ahead and give the fastboot steps a go? Would the persdata\nvdata remove the temp root access with a reboot or am I way off course?
Any input appreciated

Just rebooting you will lose temp root access. all you have to do is run the commands again any time you want adb shell temp root.
Please check out my new thread in the idol 5 forum. I have some things and ideas brewing

Magisk working
Thanks to the Mtk Easy Su app I have magisk working without flashing anything. How do ya get to fastboot on this thing? Recovery sucks, factory mode is pointless, so where's the good boot mode 99?

[WARNING] Do NOT lock your bootloader when on Android 5.1

The new Device Protection features of Android 5.1 on the Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 can, in certain cases, cause you to have a bootloader which can not be unlocked.

but to relock it after thats just wrong...
thats one of the things i hate about CM
they recommend you to relock your bootloader...
Agreed, why would you lock your bootloader unless sending in for repairs maybe?
But Google is really messing up the flow. The nexus 6 5.1 OTA is a mess right now but I will leave that for another thread.
Android 5.1 for Nexus 9? You must be joking.
So, I just purchased a Nexus 9 via the 4-hour online-only sale at Best Buy. It was $100 off, couldn't pass it up. My question is: is this likely going to be shipped in such a condition as to prevent me from permanently unlocking the bootloader? Or is a permanent lock something one must deliberately do?

No no you can still unlock it
But if you relock it that's the problem

As USBhost said, you'll be able to unlock it. However, when you are first setting it up and are running through the set-up wizard, there will be an option to "Protect Device" or something like that. If you enable it, and re-lock the bootloader, it will put you in a situation where you can only unlock the booloader in certain situations -- and if you happen to have a bootloop with a locked bootloader, that's when you are in trouble.
EDIT: On Nexus devices, I personally unlock the bootloader as soon as I take it out of the box, without first booting into Android, and then leave it unlocked. But of course, you give up some security by doing that.

Thanks, guys! Glad I stumbled across this thread before the thing arrived.
Locking the bootloader doesn't protect you from anything. If the device leaves your physical control in a potentially hostile environment, whatever is on the system or boot partition becomes suspect, regardless of whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked.

Example: I have a device running a stock ROM with no encryption, the stock recovery and a lock screen password. I happen to lose my phone. What happens to the photos of me dancing to Old Time Rock & Roll in my underwear that are stored on the device? If the bootloader is unlocked, someone just plugs it into a PC, boots TWRP and pulls them off. If the bootloader is locked, there is no easy way to see or get the photos off the device.
That is all I was saying about security. Nothing to do with you leaving your device somewhere or losing it, and then finding it again. Strictly about the personal content on the device.

I thought Lollipop always requires you to go in and check the Enable OEM Unlock box? Or is that not true if you never booted into Android even once?

If you have never booted into Android, then you don't need to check that setting. As I said, that's the way I did it on my N6: take out of box -> charge -> boot directly into bootloader -> "fastboot oem unlock". No other steps required if you don't boot into Android first.

Yes, that should work for the N9 as well.
The bootloader on my Nexus 9 Android 5.1.1 is locked forever due to my mistake
Short backstory:
- I wanted to install the Android M developer Preview for the Nexus 9 but I forgot to check "Enable OEM unlock" in developer options (worst mistake).
- I used adb command to flash the new image but failed somehow
- I carelessly type # fastboot oem lock
- I tried to factory reset from bootloader to bring it back to Stock. Now it couldn't factory reset and my Nexus 9 hangs in a nice boot loop.
- I try # fastboot oem unlock but failed with permission denied error
I tried some ways to save my device but no hopes
- I used Nexus Root Tookit to unlock bootloader or restore image with force mode but failed,
- I follow instruction in HTC dev forum to get identifier token in order to receive your unlock code binary file but failed
- Unluckily, I don't installed any custom recovery.
Please help if you know a way unlock the bootloader or flash the factory ROM to save the nexus 9

Yes, I forgot to check the box to allow oem UNLOCK. And now my device is locked forever.
A quick question: A lot of N9 ROMs require flashing an updated bootloader from the factory image. Aren't these bootloaders locked by default? Can we flash a factory bootloader over a custom ROM?
It seems that we might bork our Nexus 9s if we flash a locked bootloader in.

[GUIDE] [HOW TO] Safely re-lock bootloader on Android 5.1

This guide is for the safe procedure for re-locking your bootloader with the new security features of Android 5.1 on the Nexus 6
The purpose of re-locking your bootloader should solely be used for RMA or resale of your device. Also if you have flashed a factory image and want the added security of a locked bootloader. Or possibly it is required by your employer. If you're required by your employer, then I suggest you reconsider unlocking in the first place. If you're returning to stock, to simply fix problems on your device, then I also strongly suggest leaving the bootloader unlocked. To put it in simple terms, if you want to keep a custom recovery and ROM, mod, root, etc, then leave your bootloader unlocked. Re-locking the bootloader on the Nexus 6 will cause your device to be wiped.
Please read this post by @efrant for more clarification:

Thanks @efrant @cam30era @rootSU @clairez for collaboration and advice.
This is based on a 100% stock, encrypted, un-modded Nexus 6
Due to significant security changes in Android 5.1, there are some specific steps that must be taken in order to safely re-lock your bootloader during and after installing a factory image.
WARNING! These steps are confirmed working but there is still risk involved. If you do not ABSOLUTELY need to re-lock then I strongly suggest leaving the bootloader unlocked.
FOLLOWING THESE STEPS WILL WIPE YOUR DEVICE SO BACKUP YOUR DATA!
This is based on you (the user) having already read and followed instructions on downloading the factory image and having it ready to install.
STEP 1
Disable all security locks on your phone.
On your phone, go into your settings, click Security. In Screen security, click on Screen lock, enter your passcode/pin/pattern then select none.
You will get a prompt that Device protection features will no longer work. Click OK.
STEP 2
**OPTIONAL**
Thanks @gee2012
This step is optional because successful installation of the factory image will remove this info anyway.
Remove your Google account.
In settings, click Accounts, click Google then click on your account name. (your gmail address)
Click the 3 dot menu button in top right of screen and select Remove account. You will get a prompt That this will delete all messages, contacts and other data from your phone. Click REMOVE ACCOUNT.
STEP 3
This step is optional and may or may not be needed but I recommend doing this.
Preform a factory reset from your phone settings.
Open settings and click on Backup & reset. Click Factory data reset.
You will receive a prompt stating that this will erase all data from your phone's internal storage, click RESET PHONE.
The reset takes quite a while to complete, approximately 10 to 15 or more minutes for a 32gb model and 20 minutes or more for a 64gb model, so BE PATIENT!
Your phone will reboot when completed.
STEP 4
IMPORTANT!!
When your phone reboots, you will have to skip all account set up and ABSOLUTELY do not set any security features up. Skip EVERYTHING!
Go to settings and enable Developer options. (About phone>tap build number 7 times)
Once you have developer options enabled, enable USB Debugging and tick the box to allow OEM unlock.
I suggest preforming a reboot here to verify that OEM unlock sticks. After the reboot enter developer options to verify OEM unlock is still ticked.
If it is, we will proceed. If not, ensure you have followed the previous steps correctly. If you have and for some reason the setting won't stick, DO NOT PROCEED OR YOU MAY END UP STUCK IN A BOOT LOOP WITH NO CURRENT WAY TO FIX!
STEP 5
If setting has stuck, you are ready to unlock your bootloader and install the factory image using one of the ways outlined elsewhere in this forum.
After installation is complete, reboot to recovery and again preform a factory reset. Reboot to Android.
STEP 6
IMPORTANT!
Upon completion of factory reset from recovery and reboot to Android, it is important to follow this procedure so you may now safely lock your bootloader.
SKIP ALL ACCOUNT AND SECURITY SET UP AGAIN! Go to settings and enable developer options again. Enable USB debugging and tick allow OEM unlock.
Again, I recommend a reboot at this point to verify the settings stick.
Use the button combo or ADB to reboot to bootloader.
Use the command fastboot oem lock
Your device will wipe again and reboot.
CONGRATULATIONS! You now have a locked bootloader and you may proceed to restore your phone.
See here for info from Google about the new security features:

TWRP RECOVERY INSTALLED ONLY

Credit to this thread:
Thanks @ixa20
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3053783
STEP 1
Boot into bootloader.
STEP 2
Use fastboot and issue the commands:
fastboot format userdata
fastboot format cache
This should allow you to boot back into TWRP.
Flash a ROM and get up and running.
Unlock your bootloader and leave it that way.
Thanks also to @rootSU for posting this solution many, MANY times.

I think, primarily, if you are unencrypted you run the risk of your data being compromised if your phone is lost or stolen. Plus, the new security features are not proven to work 100% when bootloader is unlocked. Simply by rooting, you've opened your device to be more vulnerable to malicious attacks. I'm sure you already know that.

I see, nothing I wasn't already aware of! It seems that a significant amount of people that are used to an unlocked rooted handset are quick to jump on the relock the bootloader omg security bandwagon regardless of the consequences. Having said that thanks to folks such as yourself most of the kinks seem to be worked out at this point.
Thanks
Okay, so I'm new to the whole unlocking/flashing thing.... I bought a nexus 6 from Verizon which obviously came with 5.1 out of the box. I was using stock with my google account attached and a pin lock. I successfully unlocked by bootloader and rooted with twrp and the nexus toolkit. I have also since flashed chroma. Am I to understand that I can not ever go back to unrooted stock and locked booloader, now?
I'm really sorry for what is probably a stupid noob question, but I'm really paranoid now. TIA!!

No, not at all. You can flash a factory image and return to stock at anytime. However, if you plan on flashing ROMs again, there's no need to relock the bootloader. For instance, if you wanted to return to stock to say, get an OTA, the bootloader being unlocked wouldn't affect that negatively.
If you did desire to relock, following this guide, as far as disabling the security and Google account, you should be able to relock. The important thing is making sure that pesky "allow OEM unlock" option remains checked after a reboot.

You can go back to stock. And then, subsequently relock the bootloader.
And the question is not "stupid". Noob questions are encouraged here. That's how you learn.

Fair enough. The part that confused me was the first five steps appear to address steps required to unlock the bootloader. I was afraid since I already unlocked mine without first disabling security and removing my account that it would somehow preclude me from ever being able to relock the bootloader should that need ever arise in the future.
I really appreciate the help!
Yeah, I learned my lesson, DON'T PLAY WITH LOCKED BOOTLOADERS ON THIS DEVICE, EVER!
I had a locked bootloader, and no System (I had wiped it accidentally).
Luckily though I had the sense to keep TWRP installed, but I couldn't boot to it, it was just bootlooping to the TWRP splash screen.
I thought I had just lost a $650 investment, but here's what I did:
Boot to bootloader, then
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
Then I could boot to TWRP! So I
Code:
adb push (ChromaOS zip here) /sdcard/
But when I tried to flash the Data and Cache partitions kept giving me errors, I couldn't flash anything!
I went to sleep (or tried to sleep, but couldn't) I was panicking!
When I woke up I tried one more thing:
From bootloader I did
Code:
fastboot format cache
fastboot format userdata
(Notice FORMAT instead of erase!)
I booted into TWRP and was able to flash ChromaOS, I was able to enable OEM Unlock, and flashed the full Factory Image, completely back to stock.
I booted once with unlocked bootloader to verify it was working, then locked it.
If I had the stock recovery, I would've had a $650 paperweight.
DO NOT MESS AROUND WITH LOCKED BOOTLOADERS! DON'T RISK IT!

I know, I'm just saying don't play around with it, if you're going to relock make sure that you KNOW it will work.
Can confirm that the outlined info here works flawlessly
I used this process to re-lock my phone after unlocking in the fastboot-enabled upgrade from OTA 5.1 "D" to stock 5.1 "E" an hour ago.
The easy part was unlocking/locking/rebooting in the correct order - the harrowing part was when my fastboot update of the radio failed, after which I figured out it was a transient USB issue with my system, so rebooted Windows and then everything went reasonably close to plan.
So, now I'm on "E" and with a locked bootloader (i.e., stock for Verizon). I'll be experimenting with custom ROMs after settling in with this for a bit, but wanted to test out VoLTE and other things before going the custom route.
Thanks again for this guide.

Word of caution, don't flash stuff with a locked bootloader. If you get a bad flash and you can't boot, you'll be screwed.
Doesn't the setting in developer optionsto allow OEM unlock of the bootloader reset every boot on the new firmware? I know mine does on meanpop and chroma both 5.1 roms

It does if you have "Device protection" enabled. If you do a factory reset and, while you are running through the set up wizard, do not enable "Device protection", then the " Allow OEM unlock" setting should stick.

Before attempting to upgrade the stock level or going custom, I was planning to run through at least steps 1-4 again to enable me to safely unlock.
Or, do I only need to tick OEM Unlock, adb into stock recovery and then fastboot oem unlock without going through the suggested factory data reset step?

Is there a twrp for ZTE Maven 3 (z835)?

I've been searching the forums and internet for a while, but I cant seem to find any twrp that is specifically for the ZTE Maven 3 (z835). I have very little knowledge about this, and I really do not need a new paperweight. I already got the developer options, I know about the OEM unlocking and was looking at another option that I believe might be relevant which is "USB debugging," I feel like that would be important to activate to once I begin the steps of getting twrp installed because it allows file sharing between the device and computer. Ultimately, my goal is to root this phone if that becomes possible, but in the past I've bricked an Alcatel Ideal while messing around with my newly found power since I had no clue what I was really doing (I successfully got the root on that phone, tried flashing SuperSU without clearing the dalvik cache first and soft-bricked it) I wasn't able to fix that since I didn't have a custom recovery installed, that is why Id like to get twrp on this ZTE so if I make a mistake in the future it wont leave me without a phone.

Just found a method for unlocking the bootloader and that seems very simple if it goes as planned, Installing the twrp after that is what I'm unsure of now

He was just trolling. Nobody has figured out an unlock for the bootloader for ZTE Maven 3 (Z835) yet. I really would like to figure out a root method, as it's a great quality device for such a low price. Seriously lacking in storage though, which is where a root would really come in clutch for this devices popularity. I hope at least a TWRP is available soon.
Unlocking the bootloader is in the developer options menu.

Not sure what you're talking about Triforce. Unlocking the bootloader is a standard, supported feature of this device.
1) Go to About -> Build in the Settings menu.
2) Tap until you unlock Developer options in Settings.
3) Go into Developer options.
4) Enable OEM unlocking.
There really isn't anything to "figure out" here as far as the bootloader is concerned.
Now, TWRP, root, and SIM unlock, those would be useful to figure out.

If you had this phone you would know our struggles I have already done these steps and have used adb reboot bootloader and adb reboot recovery and selected reboot to bootloader which has not worked and the device does not work with fastboot commands and I don't think it has the feature to do so.

Check this thread, and follow local update method, then you need only of a command to lock the bootloader:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/how-to-update-return-to-stock-oneplus-6-t3870795
I just locked the bootloader for my OnePlus 6t. Follow the steps given below.
1. Backup all the important data. I am not responsible for any data loss!!!
2. Remove security lock screen (pin/pattern) or any thing
3. Download the stock rom from https://oxygenos.oneplus.net/OnePlus6TOxygen_34_OTA_020_all_1904032212_38e22c8b9abd42e3.zip
and transfer it to your phone.
4. Boot into twrp recovery.
5. flash the downloaded zip
6. Once done, reboot the system.
7. Now, boot back into the fastboot. (you can enable advance restart from developer mode for easy boot into fastboot)
8. Run fastboot oem lock
9. You will be presented with two options on phone screen. Select the one that says lock the bootloader.
10. It will wipe everything.
11. Once you in the system, enable developer mode and make sure that oem unlock is turned off. If not, turn it off and restart your phone.
And, you are done.
Let me know if it helps or if you have any question/concern.
MDM Tool in my opinion the easiest and quickest way to go back to 1000% stock. It will re-flash every partition on the phone so it's like brand new again. Using the MSM Tool guarantees that everything is back to stock and should restore the Widevine version back to L1 or whatever it was originally.
A question please
Once you lock again your phone, does it loose the root????
I mean, I have a Xperia 10 with the bootloader unlocked , it is root as well. Now root permissions for special aps work fine, but Google Pay is unusable, it does not work anymore. I hid root with xposed framework and rootCloak, but Google Pay still does not work now because the bootloader is unlocked...
As you should know, it is possible to lock the phone again... and many of those phones that relock their bootloaders keep the root permissions...
However , in my case, with Xperia devices (bq and xiaomi happen de same) is you lock the bootloader again, the phone resets, everything dissapear and root is eliminated. What is a really disaster.
As you have heard, the majority of phones, if you lock them again the root continues working, at least the apps that you gave them root permissions they continue working as they used to. But in my case this is different....ç
So please,
Is there any possibility to Lock my bootloader again without loosing the Root in my Xperia?????
Thousand of thanks!!!!

Yes I did:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-10/development/help-how-to-lock-bootloader-loosing-t3965829/post80203451#post80203451
Also I asked for help here:

https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/themes-apps/app-bootunlocker-nexus-devices-version-t1731993/page66
This is the only Thread where I could find some information about locking a bootloader again. Yes , this is dedicated to xiaomi 6t, but locking bootloaders is something common.
The only thing I want is to lock my Bootloader again without loosing Root permisions. Xperia devices seem to RESET everything when you lock the booloader automatically...., but perhaps there is another way.... a possibility to lock the bootloader without the phone is reset (loosing root permissions) ....
I asked for some help here. I regret any inconvenience that could may be caused on this thread with my message.
Regards
Nobody have your phone here how could we help you? Each phone has its specific behavior
If you relock a OnePlus phone you reset everything, like when you unlock it and it's logical. A locked bootloader is meant to ensure safety of data, safety that can't be provided with root access. Locked BL and root are antinomic.

Thank you for your message and understanding. So in Oneplus devices happen the same. So once you unlock the bootloader you loose Google Pay forever because it does not work wit BL unlocked...
Some users suggested me to lock again the bootloader,
Imagine:
- I become Root. Then I modify some apps
- I give to some apps root permissions.
- I lock the bootloader again.
- I won't be able to modify my phone anymore, but all those apps that were given root permissions, Will they be kept in the phone although it has BL locked again.
would it be like this?
or all changes you did while being root would dissapear with everything?????
If So... there is no exit what I see..., We have to choose between being Root users.... or being stock with Google Pay. It is a Pity.
I was not sure if all Phones reset and erase everything when you lock the bootloader .... but as I can see here, this is the reality. Root users loose Google PAY definitely.
Is there any option to solve this??
thanks again for your attention.

Does google pay work??? What did you do in magisk exactly to achieve that???
I rooted my xperia using Magisk..., is there any tutorial or info that you suggest to me to follow ? or what should I do in magisk options???
I have 10 days with my phone stopped, trying and trying to make Google Pay works....Maybe this is happening to me because my Xperia uses Android 9.0.... or Magisk should make google pay work even being in android 9.0?
First Google pay recognized Root, and the app stopped working. I hid it using xposed and RootCloak
Then, Google pay recognized Bootloader. But now... I dont know what to do to hid bootloader unlocked for Google..., Google pay recognises it is unlocked... a disaster and a nightmare for me, I dont know what to do...
Thousand of thanks, I really thankfull for your help.

Rooting ZTE Blade A7 Prime

I've used the search function and found nothing for this phone. I've used Google and found nothing about rooting this exact model.
I'm looking for the technique to root this phone and I'm finding nothing. Has anybody rooted and flashed a Custom ROM/custom recovery on this device and how did you do it?
I just got this phone as well, and I have been looking and also have found nothing for this exact variant. I have tried the usual one-click methods to no avail. Is there any development in the works? If you need a test dummy, let me know. I have several other phones to use as spares, so I am not afraid of a soft brick.
Rooting ZTE Blade a7 Prime
I too can be a test dummy to root this phone. Since Visible is such a hands off company you really need your phone to be rooted to do things for yourself. Currently for some reason my ZTE BLADE A7 Prime can’t send or receive calls and their techs are telling me 3 to 5 business days... counting yesterday and today that’s a week! Ridiculous! The APN settings look off compared to my wife’s phone but you can’t edit the settings.
ZTE Blade prime A7 Visible
I've been having the exact same problem with making and receiving calls also with losing service(for the service prob. Found great n easy solution- till find permanent one-**go to airplane mode in settings turn it on for 30secs to a minute then turn airplane mode back off TAKES SIGNAL FROM 0-4 BARS EVERYTIME AND I CAN GET/MAKE CALLS INSTANTLY ETC AGAIN ?)
Data saver seems to work for resetting connection as well. I too would be interested in rooting. I kinda like the phone, but it does have its issues.
First glance at unlocking bootloader
I just received the phone today. I was excited to see that I could get into developer mode and move the OEM Unlocking icon to allow bootloader unlock... Unfortunately, that's where the excitement ended. The typical fastboot oem unlock and fastboot flashing unlock yielded no results. I then did some research and it would seem MediaTek only implements two oem commands, and unlock is not one of them...
"The bootloader may implement additional, manufacturer-specific commands. These do not follow the usual protocol command format, and they cannot have a payload. Some manufacturers implement a lot of OEM commands, as can be seen here. MediaTek just implements two: fastboot oem p2u on and fastboot oem p2u off, these enable or disable the redirection of Linux kernel messages to the UART."
Will tinker with it some more later since I'm limited with time. Hope someone figures out how to unlock the bootloader and go from there.
Has anybody tried this?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...atek-armv8-t3922213/post79626434#post79626434
I don't own this phone (yet), so I can't give it a shot myself.
I'm not very familiar with mediatek processors in general, but that looks rather promising with some restrictions... If I have time over the weekend, I'll give that a whirl and report back whether it works or bricks my device
seems lke ts gonna be a long process before were able to fiddle with roms but im atleast glad this is close to stock android.
I can confirm that mtk-su R20 downloaded from https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd...xperimental-software-root-hd-8-hd-10-t3904595 gets you root prompt. Use 32-bit binary (arm).
Edit: I can also confirm that the process in https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...atek-armv8-t3922213/post79626434#post79626434 works and root survives the reboots.

Ditto here too. Couldn't get it working at first. Turned out I miss read the instructions and put all files in the init.d folder instead od the two files in the bin folder. Then your tip on using the 32bit binary got it working. Thanks.
Anybody figured out a way to change build.prop to make it stick after reboot? I am trying to enable APN editing by modifying /system/build.prop, but whenever I reboot I lose the changes.
/system and the root filesystem are mounted as a kind of RAM Disk. You would have to modify the actual image files (varies depending on partition scheme) and reflash to make things stick. Now, to my knowledge, doing so would require an unlocked bootloader, which currently is not possible with this phone.

Looks like we can not add an APN even with root then? It's a bummer.

They removed the fastboot command to unlock the bootloader. I found it out by comparing the similar ZTE Blade 10 and Blade 10 Prime. The Blade 10 non-prime has the unlock command and it works whereas the prime version has the command removed but funnily enough the lock command is still there but is useless. I then looked at the bootloader for the a7 prime and same thing the unlock command is removed from the bootloader. So there isn't much hope for it unless a bypass can be found.

+1 to another confirmation that the above works. Root is available, but there are limitations. I cannot install many of the modules from magisk, but this is still a great start. Thanks for the links :good:
I installed the magisk, however, it seems no root permission when I installed Titanium to remove stock apps, it never get root permission.
I was able to add new APN easily to make it work on AT&T 4G LTE data network. Are you saying any reboot of phone will make the newly added APN disappear?

I was also able to add and APN by just clicking on the "+" icon on the top-right corner of the APN configuration screen. When I inserted by MINT SIM Card (T-Mobile MVNO) there were not default populated APNs, but was able to get everything to work after adding an APN -- even after rebooting.
Big Tip: After entering the APN data and before leaving the data entry screen, make sure that you save the APN or it will not be persisted. Click on the "three dots" menu on the top-right corner and hit the Save menu item.

After studying the process a bit, I've come to conclude that this isn't really permanent root. All this does is the equivalent of running a script to gain temporary root after after reboot. This is done very late in the boot process, if you can even call it a part of the boot process since it's really just a user-space application auto-starting.
The modules are probably trying to be instantiated well before the root is made available through the pseudo "init.d" scripts.
It's still nice to have root access using this technique, but its usability is pretty limited. For example, I can't even get AFWall+ to start up, even if I configure it with a startup delay (hoping that it kicks in after temporary root).
So what are the odds we can make this a permanent root using a firehose file and QPST/QFIL? Similar to the Visible R2 phone?
