Has anyone come from oneplus 5 to the s8? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hope this hasn't been asked already. I had the note 7 and decided to get the oneplus 3t. I initially felt the 3t was way faster than the note 7, and of course the whole note 7 fire dibacle then kicked off. But even with the then high specs of the 3t something just didn't seem right as the screen at times appeared unresponsive and some apps were just not as fluid as I expected. I then sold the 3t and pulled the note 7 from the closet and it was so much fluid to use and all apps were buttery smooth. So now deciding between the s8 Exynos and oneplus 5 8gb version so just wandering if anyone has had any experience of having moved from oneplus 5 to s8 and what thoughts you might have thanks.

Funny timing on this. I've had a Galaxy S8 for a couple of months now and while the experience with the phone has been great overall, especially the gorgeous screen, Bixby's usefulness, and surprising fluidity of the most updated Touchwiz, I find myself coming very close to pulling the trigger on a OP5. Lately, I've been missing the "pure android" experience. I'm getting very tired of Samsung constantly trying to push their proprietary apps on me through notifications almost daily. I also dislike how they make some things impossible, like making the Google Calendar app the system wide go-to, in place of their terrible built in calendar app. If I try to disable the built in calendar app through BK Disabler it seems to cripple basic functionality of the phone.
The other thing that drives me nuts is the widely unreliable finger print scanner. I'd say it works about 70% of the time but sometimes it will stop working entirely until I reboot the phone. When it does work, it's still quite slow when compared to my Pixel and what I remember from the OnePlus 3. Overall, Touchwiz is quite snappy and has been reliable. But it does run into some stuttering/lagging issues from time to time.
So anyways, I'm an S8 owner who is seriously considering switching to the OP5 and giving the S8 to my wife. But I'm sure others will have differing opinions.

I think that's a wise move, personally.
Another thing I didn't mention is that when you install an app like BK Disabler you'll see just how much bloatware Samsung piles into this phone. The amount of unnecessary apps/services running in the background is absolutely obsurd to the point where it's almost comical. You can disable a lot of it but any time Samsung/the carrier sends an update through, it seems to re-enable all the disabled services. And there are a lot of bloatware services running that if you disable/uninstall them, basic functionality of the phone stops working. So trying to slim down the background apps seems to be a constant and arguably futile battle.
I know Touchwiz has come a long way and Samsung does offer some nice little things that pure android doesn't have. But Samsung needs to learn not to over-do it on all the crap they stuff into their phones. It's beyond annoying.

Galaxy s7 edge disappointment

I've always been a huge fan of Android. I remember getting my first HTC Desire many years ago - the things you could do was unbelievable at that time.
Many years have passed and the technology has advanced greatly since then, however one thing that keeps bugging me is how Android still are performing - especially with third party developers like Samsung.
I've been using a iPhone 6s for some time and decided it was time to return to Android. I spent a lot of time researching which phone to chose, and to my surprise, everyone was prasing the s7 edge like it was the next big thing since the wheel.
So... I get one of them and the first thing I notice is how completely laggy the entire phone is. How can a phone with so crazy hardware have such a laggy interface - and how come no one has spoken about this in any reviews? Is it just normal Android behavior - or do you get blind to this when using it for years? I don't get it - and I really regret buying this phone because of this.
Scrolling stutters, typing to fast in chrome while it is loading makes the keyboard freeze for a moment and I don't enjoy the experience. I turned in my nexus 5 and even though it was way more fluent than the s7 in the interface, it has the same underlying stutter/lagg problems but on a way lesser scale.
Usually I'm really pro android - but anyone saying this **** is fluid and fast are lying to themselves or in denial. Try using an iPhone for once - I know it's like comparing Apple and oranges - but it's without a doubt a way better experience, the touch feels like it's moving at the same speed as the finger and best of all. I think we need some kind of nanotechnology to get even close to that experience on Android
Why are you flashing custom roms on xda if it wasn't for the hope of getting a super-fast rom with great battery and no lagg? And am I overreacting? Why aren't everyday Android users bugged by this?
Hmm actually the S7 edge is the first Android phone where I really won't bother to flash anything just to make it faster. I have absolutely no problems with fluidness...
Are you using the SD or Exynos one?

With 2k resolution and many bloatware of U.S network. You can see slow because android no long animation and no wait loaded and touch like ios, fhd resolution of ios. With android 7 and FHD, s7 edge will very smooth.
You got a duff one by the sounds of it. You answer your own question really, nobody in reviews etc. is talking about your issues because, they are your issues.
Have the Exnyos model here on the EE network and I don't get any of the issues regarding speed and fluidity etc.

Meh I feel with the power the S7 Edge has you would expect much higher fluidity in this day and age of phone technology. My old iPhone 4s was smooth as butter. In comparison Samsung has always felt like butter but with crumbs in it. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my S7 Edge but it could be better...

As a s7 edge owner, I have no idea what are you talking about.
my s7 edge is 4 months old and working great
never rooted/ flashed another version
never downloaded cleanmaster apk, taskmanager ect.. never used it
my phone has been working great 4 months so far. Interface is smooth....
everything is smooth
you right- no need to root and mess up with your phone in order to make it work
Take your phone back to the store . try a factory reset under settings maybe it will help.
plus remember android 7 / 7.1.1 will be coming this month. As i checked on youtube and changeloge, there are tons of new features.
the update may solve the problem as well but i would not wait for that
good luck!
Clean master îs a wonderful app.
S7 Edge Smart Manager is powered by clean master so no need to blame this app.
tried many diffrent roms for the samsung s7 (flat) currently on Nougat 7 beta
All Roms i've tried are smooth and i never experienced lag or stutter on any of them.
I think you have bad software or broken phone.
Try a factory reset, or return to the Samsung store and explain the issue.
Post and run, not sure if this is a wind-up
Funny thing is I had the iPhone 7+ before coming back to Sammy, and I find this phone more stable than the iPhone. iOS10 was a big disappointment and I had a lot of hiccups on the iPhone 7+.
Can't wait to see what the S8 looks like too!
I have an ipad air 2 it's slowly to if you install to many apps. My problem with Samsung I can't delete debloat all the crapp what come with the phone without root. And most things are useless in my eyes. I switched from i9300 slimrom and than cm roms . The firmware should be small and fast. My slomrom was 200mbyte now I have to download 1.5gbyte . I don't want know comes in 10years properly 10gigabyte firmwares.
I have had my S7 since release day and i am a heavy user of my phone with way too many apps installed (120+) and yet i have no lag at all. I can type as fast as i want, scrolling your long post had no stutter or lag, and thats with a ton of background apps and a pop up video running! All i will say is my phone is a little warm. I am no fan of Apple so i cant compare but my nephew has switched from being an Apple user his whole life to the S7 and he is happy. There are missing features yes but performance wise he says he cant tell any difference so i take him on his word about that. I would consider if a) you have a dud or b) you have a fake. Either way, get it checked out because like the others say, you cant be right and everyone else be wrong!
sessingo is not wrong.... I've used since two month an Asus Zenfone 3 ZE552KL and, despite the device is loaded full of bloatware, the user experience is far better than with my S7 Edge. So, for me, the user experience on Android can be very good (my Asus for example) with no stutter, no lags, very snappy, even if the hardware is mid-range. It's like night and day between the two devices !!!
Sure the feeling on an Iphone is great, compared to the S7 and Edge. And I'm a big fan of Android and Samsung since the Galaxy S2...

I've very recently changed from my old iPhone 6 Plus to the S7 Edge and I know exactly what you mean. The 6 Plus was my first iPhone having had many Android devices prior to that. Although the S7 Edge is lightning quick, and opening and closing apps etc is super-fast, it has a 'twitch' to it, particularly when scrolling. Also, exactly as you describe, when moving your thumb slowly up and down you feel out-of-sync with the screen. I noticed it immediately, and then even got out my old iPhone to compare just in case I was imagining it. I wasn't. They behave very differently. Its amazing what you get used to. It doesn't feel as polished an experience I'm afraid.
There's lots of comments asking 'how can your phone be laggy? Mine's super-fast' - well I think there's a misunderstanding about what we're describing. For me, it's not that the phone isn't fast, it is. Very. It's about how it feels to interact with. It just feels 'twitchy' and not totally in sync with my gestures. I do get the odd weird freeze on many apps. I wouldn't call it lag but just a short millisecond pause that you're not expecting that throws what you're doing out of kilter. It's nothing to do with power. Just the architecture I think. We probably wouldn't notice these things if we hadn't switched from one platform to the other. I'm don't really want to get into the 'which is best' nonsense. I do slightly regret changing but the Apple handsets were boring, physically - design wise - and the S7 Edge is a beautiful looking phone. I'd underetimated how much I'd miss certain things though.

Diehard Pixel/Nexus owner switching to S8. Questions for 7 Edge owners.

I'll start by saying I've been a strict Nexus (and now Pixel) user for the past 8+ years. However, the "pure" Android experience has gotten a bit bland/boring to me. Yesterday I had the opportunity to play with the Galaxy S8 at my local T-Mobile store and I was absolutely blown away. That is the most gorgeous phone/screen I have ever seen. And in my short time messing with the interface, I really like the overall aesthetics of Samsung's newest take on the Android experience.
However, before I pull the trigger, I do have some questions.
1) For those who have had their S7 edge for a longer period of time, how has the experience held up as far as increased lag and decreased battery life are concerned? I know with previous iterations of Touchwiz, the lag really started to show within just a couple weeks of using the phone. In fact, my wife's S7 is unbelievably laggy (compared to my Pixel and iPhone 7), which is concerning. Only clearing all apps/rebooting the phone solves the problem but the lag comes back very quickly. Admittedly, I haven't spent the time to troubleshoot exactly where the resource hogs are with her phone.
2) Since I normally buy my Nexus/Pixel phone's unlocked, I always throw a screen protector and case on the phone right away so I can prevent scratches and preserve it for resale purposes. However, if I get the S8 I'll be doing it through Jump! On Demand through T-Mobile, which I still have but haven't made use of in quite a while. So I won't be reselling the phone and instead just turn it in. Because of this I'm seriously thinking about going with no screen protector so I can get the full experience of this unbelievable screen. However, my question for you is how well does this screen hold up to scratches over long term (6+ month) usage? Is it a scratch magnet that still requires a protector?
I should mention that I'm also still considering the LG G6. However, in my side by side comparison at the T-Mobile store, the screen on the S8 just completely blew the screen on the G6 away.
1. i've had my s7 edge for just a bit less than a year now, the particular android install that's running on my s7e for plus minus 6 months, and despite touchwiz still not being up to par with other OEM android variants, it still holds up pretty well in the performance department (samsung kinda ruined the battery life when they updated the s7 to nougat which gives me like an hour less battery life now so that's not all that great, but i'm just gonna assume and hope that they'll fix that at some point)
2. the s7's screen itself is pretty scratch resistant (mine has a load of very fine and thin scratches but honestly i only see those when the sun is reflecting on it just right, and even then i don't really pay attention to it ever), the metal border around it however absolutely loves to get scratched, not to mention the glass back which CAN crack if dropped just right. i personally recommend you to just get a samsung case which usually feel high quality and don't look like cheap chinese plastic garbage
Thanks for the input. That sucks about the battery life. Unfortunately, the battery life may still be an issue with the S8 on Nougat, according to the review I saw posted by Marques Brownlee.
I'd definitely get a case for the phone for scratch/minor drop protection.

I agree with the previous comment about battery life. That being said, I was blown away by the S7's battery life, going from a ~2000mAh phone to a ~3000mAh phone, and despite losing maybe an hour when updated to Nougat, it still lasts a long time and held up very well compared to its competition at the time.
Unlike the previous comment, however, after 2/3 of a year of owning this phone, maybe I'm more careful or less active than most, but I have no scratches on my device at all. That being said, I always keep it in a solid case. I haven't used a screen protector though! I would like to warn that the glass body is a total fingerprint magnet, but a case definitely helps because it means the back glass is protected.
When it comes to slowdown, I've barely noticed any of that, and it's been a far cry from the experience you say your wife has had. The speed still feels very close to when I first purchased. However, I've been eyeing the Pixel for a long time now, simply due to how much more freeing the software seems. If you're one to root your phone and install ROMs, Samsung software makes you go through hoops relative to competitors. I suppose that's because it's so damn stable anyway lol.

I ended up picking up an S8 from my local T-Mobile store yesterday morning. So far I absolutely love it and haven't seen any lag/stuttering when compared to my Pixel. I threw a Spigen slim case on it right away (Amazon link) and went without a screen protector. The case is thin but provides the protection I need. And going without a screen protector (for the first time in like 5 years) is liberating! I'm really enjoying just being able to appreciate the feel of the bare screen on this phone.
As for the lag on my wife's phone, I think my initial setup and usage of the S8 has helped me discover why her S7 feels so laggy. She just started using it right out of the box and I never took the time to do the initial de-bloat/tweaking to help speed it up (like disabling window animation scale and transition animation scale). I'm sure she's got a TON of useless apps constantly loading and running in the background. I'll work on her phone tonight.
I previously relied on rooting and installing custom ROMs on my Nexus phones. However, with the Pixel and Android Nougat, I never felt the need to do that. I just used the Pixel in stock form for the past 6 months. So far the S8 feels just as snappy as the Pixel did but I actually prefer the tweaked UI that Samsung implemented. After many years of using "Pure Android" phones, the stock Google experience has become quite boring. The S8 interface feels much more elegant and grown up.

Well, that's awesome and I'm glad to hear you're loving your device! The really looks like an improved version of the S7 edge in nearly every way. One thing I just thought of that may have helped me with speed, besides debloating, is the use of custom launchers (specifically Nova Launcher) that feel sleek and snappy. I prefer Nova over TouchWiz by miles, but that's a matter of taste, and every iteration of TouchWiz seems to be better and better.

 Yep, I always install Nova Launcher Prime immediately after setting my phones up. I love the customization options of that launcher and it always seems to be the fastest of any launcher I try. Using Nova Launcher is probably one of the reasons this phone feels as fast as my Pixel.
I'm also really enjoying Bixby, despite its bad press. I like being able to hit the Bixby button to quickly access necessary information. So far it's better than Google Now, in my opinion, because you can set Bixby to show you only what you want to see (Weather, Calendar and Reminders in my case). With Google Now you can try to train it but it always ends up showing me a bunch of news articles and other crap I don't care about.

Galaxy S8 (European Exynos) - performance - scroll stuttering

Hi,
I'm really disappointed, I got my brand new s8 yesterday, and it looks and feels amazing like really really great.
Sadely it stutters a lot after a few swipes scrolling down in many apps, most disappointing were Instagram and Fenix, two perfectly smooth apps on my Pixel.
Is my device defective? What's your experience?
I think I 'm going to return it though
Best,
Dreadk
Instagram feels fine while scrolling ... even fast scrolling is good.
Maybe your Inet connection bandwidth?
My s8 stutters. I have no lag in instagram. Samsung browser lags a lot, also apparant on xda-dev forum site. My s7 edge never stuttered, it's buttery smooth. Both devices are Exynos. I am contemplating about returning it and sticking to my galaxy s7 edge. Batterylife also is worse than my s7 edge. On my s7 edge, I averaged at around 1000-1500mAh used for the battery. On my s8, I averaged at around 800-900mAh....
My phone is always warm, Android System is also quite high at about 10% when the display is at 40%. I am not happy with the S8. My s7 edge is much louder with dualspeakermod as well. The s8 has a very very weak earpiece speaker, so dualspeakermod won't be amazing at all.
Rear-facing camera favours retaining highlights on the s8. On the s7 edge it always wants to up the shadows. S8 camera has less noise but it's nothing special compared to my s7 edge.
Front facing camera is nice on the s8...but the autofocus is a pain in the ass. On the s7 edge, focus is always perfect due to fixed focus. On s7 edge, sometimes it needs refocus and can result in blurred image....
I got a 500Mb fiber and my Pixel on the same wifi scrolls smoothly anyway.
Wish it could be a simple fix like that ^^
Wow looks like you have much more complaints than I do, anyway I didn't test the phone further, smooth scrolling is one on my most wanted feature ; so I stopped digging deeper.
Why no reviewer did notice this stuff though?
I remember it was the same with iPhone 7 stuttering everywhere (10.3 greatly improved that recently, but too late).
Guys,
How are you installing your apps?
Are you doing a transfer from old phone to S8?
Sometimes installing apps fresh is best. Also double check your settings.
I usually use Nova Launcher so will see what the stock launcher is like for a day or two and then decide if Nova will be better.
I did a transfer first and then two factory reset installs (only installing instagram and fenix) because I couldn't believe it
I wonder if it's not an Exynos only problem, I suspect Samsung might have optimized the snapdragon / US version much more than the European one; US market is way more important I guess.
Any clue about that?

Nova launcher works fine

I have the US Verizon variant and mine lags a lot. Tons of jank when simply pulling down the Notification Shade. Very disappointed. Doesn't matter whether I run the TW or GN launchers; both do the same thing. For having a SnapDragon 835 and a truckload of RAM, I expected it to be very smooth. I've tried turning down the display to just HD and that didn't make any difference at all.

I have a US GS8 on VZW and I actually feel this is the smoothest device I've ever used. I'm coming (back to Android after a mini break) from an iPhone 7 Plus and in some places the GS8 is smoother and more fluid than the iPhone. It's way better than what Android used to be.
Maybe there's an app or something running in the background?

I thought that too but this did it right out of the box before I even started loading apps. I'd love to figure out what's wrong. Considered doing an FDR just for the sake of doing it before I get too comfortable with the initial setup, as I know I'm lazy and will put it off. I mean could I have a CPU disabled or something? I guess I could contact Samsung support but I'm assuming they are going to be swamped for the next couple of weeks... but need an answer before my return window comes up.

As I said, I factory reset two times, only installing instagram and fenix after initial setup and without modifying any option. No luck
Maybe I got a defective unit.

Because everyone configures their phone differently and the likely cause of these random issues isn't the phone it's some combination of user specific apps and settings.

I remember a few years ago when the note 5 was released. Boy did that phone lag, it was unbelievable. The thing is not many people would notice it and like you I use fenix and talon for Twitter and if a phone lags on these 2 apps it's glaringly obvious for me. Please let me know how you get on with this as was hoping to get a s8 from work.

Please read my posts, I did factory reset the phone two times only installing instagram and fenix, not changing any settings.
Definitely not user specific, I wish it could be though, easy fix...

I did a video, can you see the stutter (the video is 60fps) ?
https://youtu.be/YTTYtT8JR_U
The worst part is around 12 to 17 sec.
give the phone a bit of time to adapt, there is always small updates to fix these minor issues

Guess you're right, I'm quite sure the stutter is caused by Samsung software trying too hard to smooth the scrolling.
Because to get the stutter I must scroll without pause, if I pause and scroll again things stay smooth.
I really hope they fix that soon but what if they don't and I can't return the phone...
PS: it tooks Apple 6 months to fix the same kind of issues on the iPhone 7.
UK s8. Upgraded from a Google Pixel and it feels like a downgrade in terms of speed and smoothness. Not buttery at all. Stutters everywhere!
Seriously, Samsung? Don't they test these things?

lags and stutter with bad battery life

Just got my s8 Exynos and sold my iPhone 7 Plus. And damn this phone is laggy. Lags and stutter everywhere and the battery is a joke.
Too funny. Get your 7 Plus back - soon! [emoji6]
This super accurate problem description is a joke. Should've stayed with the "easy to use" iPhone 7 Plus with their infinite battery life.
You're right. I should!
Why do X-iphone users always come here to guilt others on their inability to bother or take the time to understand and learn the new OS they just moved to ?
Better yet, they always threatin to go back to using iphones as if the whole world gonna fall apart by such a decision.
OP: use whatever device makes you happy and dont guilt/ blame others if you think you made a bad decision
I have no issues ... mine runs smooth! US Unlocked!
I have personally never thought an Android to be a mistake. I have used Nokia phones, then bought my first Android device in 2008 from T-Mobile (HTC Dream) and this is how it all started... I did have few iPhone that I used each one up to a month(just to test it out) and I found the device to be boring (my personal opinion) and I realized that I am missing so many convenient features on iOS compared to Android. By the way, none of my Android phones had bad battery life and I charge my phone not earlier than after 38 + hours, but usually at the end of second day. The only thing that I have noticed with iPhone is that it is for people that don't like adventure, don't like change, don't like being in control of the situation and like being told what to do, instead of making a decision of their own. (IMO)
I'm not a Apple fan in any way. I've had nexus, galaxy s2, s3, s6, s7 edge, note 2, note 4 and some HTC, LG and many more android phones.
I only changed to iPhone 7 Plus because of my work. They bought me the phone and an Apple watch.
And I was surprised when I started using s8 when it comes to stutter and bad battery life. Much worse than s7 edge and iPhone 7
So there must be something wrong with your device. What about a factory reset?

I did. Did also uninstall almost all 3rd party apps and lowered the resolution to HD+.
I'll report later.

I had an exynos S7 edge and had enough of the lag. Now I'm using a Sony XZ Premium and no lag at all. It has been amazing for me. Battery life is better than my S7 Edge too. I won't be going back to a Samsung device anytime soon.
OP:
imo android is not for everyone, it is for those who like to be in charge of whats going in the background and having much more info and control over the os than say apple.
On the other hand iphones os controls and background apps are regulated by apple policies, servers and etc to make it fool proof Which is a must for the simple average user.
Example: many of the threads here mentions 100% of your device problems ( lags, stuttering, ****ty battery, yada yada) while 99% of the time the reason for such stutters is bixby mapping apps or a corrupted SD card or a user introduced malware app ( kinda makes sence why there is no external storage on iphones and must be connected to itunes for any downloading etc..)
Again, judging from your andoid history that you mentioned, and the way you reacted cause you have no idea why your s8 is having performance issues, imo iphones suites you better.
Cheers !

I agree to disagree. 90% of all my phones has been Android. Take S7 Edge as an example. It worked flawless. Only issue I had with it was the sensitive screen when typing.
I tried my friends Pixel and also one OP5, can only say that there's no lag nor stutter at all. How come it's only S8? Make a fast googling and you'll see all the complaints about the same issue that I'm experiencing.
My last two cents, it's not android, it's TouchWiz.
So the problem is fixed now? I deleted 60% of my apps, lowered the resolution to HD+ and now I've got 6h SoT and no stutter nor lag.
This one thing was not missed on my iPhone. I could use any app from the app store without worry about the performance and the battery.
^If this is all you are able to get out of Android, nobody can help you!

If you could (for free), would you switch to Galaxy S8+?

I'm switching my Galaxy S6 Edge after long using it and I have 2 main choices: OnePlus 5 (128 GB version) or the Galaxy S8+
The main reasons for me to choose the OnePlus are the faster and cleaner android performance, even though I'm a Galaxy user since the Galaxy 2 I never liked the bloatware and the oxygen OS looks wonderful.
The reasons for taking the S8+ are... Well everywhere I searched and almost any review by people who used them both are saying that it is the best android smartphone there is.
Except the reviews, the camera and amazing display and quality are much better.
After a couple of days, and hundreds of video and written reviews and comparisons I still couldn't choose so I decided to ask here, after you've used OP5 for some time, if someone approached and offered you to switch your OP5 with a S8 for free, would you do it?
Please note that cost is not an issue, here in Israel the S8+ costs about 300 ILS (about $85) more than the OP5 and i can afford it if it's worth it.
Nope. OP5 has far superior battery life, it is faster and dash charging is amazing, more ram and storage and basically Stock Android! The S8 has a better display but I'm OK with 1080p (didn't think I would be coming from 1440p phones) as I don't care about VR. Also, better updates and more frequent to date.
I switched from the S8+, the near stock Android is unbeatable for fluidity and just quality of life. Everything seems more iOS like on stock (or near it) Android. And when I say more iOS like I mean the good things about it, such as the fluidity and overall polish.
I switched from the S8. OS is light-years better. I don't need all the gimmicks and love quick updates. Portrait mode is a plus for taking pics of the family.
I'd trade, try it out for a bit, then sell it for another phone lmao. Maybe a Z2 Play or Mi A1. Who knows?
S8+ is a nice phone but all that Samsung bloat I can't deal with
You probably should ask that question in a more Samsung friendly thread because people here are obviously going to be biased. The OP5 is better if you are into rooting or customizing your phone. But it also has terrible camera software --I could take better low light pictures with my $200 Samsung Galaxy J3. The other thing Samsung phones have going for them is the build quality. I've never owned a Samsung phone that broke before I was ready to replace it. I don't think the OP5 has comparable build quality. But if you like to root your phone and flash custom kernels and ROMs the OP5 may be the best phone on the market.
For the looks yes, I came from a s6 edge+ and my girl has a normal s8, but for overall experience, speed and stuff I would def choose the 5, and if I want looks, I just hold my girls phone for a few sec..
They could pay me money on top and I would never come back to Samsung!
As you may have noticed, most of oneplus's users (including me) see the OP5 as a superior device to the s8.
Most people are not buying this phone because it's cheaper.
Coming from an s4, I was considering the s8 and the oneplus 5. But I am going for the OP5, because I think it's the superior device.
S8 is a good phone but I cannot live with Samsung's software
I haven't used Samsung devices much, but simply because I am able to mod this (custom ROMs, kernels, etc.) with virtually no bloatware and heavy skins (such as TouchWiz) makes this the better option for me.
The S8 does have a nice design though, and from reviews/feedback, seems like it has a better camera as well; but that isn't enough for me to switch over.
The 5 is a great device and I think if you choose it, you won't be disappointed!
Considering the fact that I'm switching from the LAGGY S8+ to the OP5 then I guess the answer to this would be NO
I could go either way except for the fact that I need dual sim cards so I don't have to carry 2 phones. I used an s8 for a couple weeks before switching to the op5. They both have there pros and cons which have all been touched on here. I won't switch but I would be happy with either phone. I think the s8 design is prettier and more impressive but the op5 is easier to use.
I like both.
As stated they both have their pros and cons...
S8+ has got a brilliant camera, sd card support and a heap of hardware features to explore. There is always things to find and surprise. Bixby is a little hard to use unless you have a US accent, I find it doesn't understand Aussie to well but it does learn.
The 4gb of ram is noticeable when you hold the Oneplus up to it though.
Oneplus doesn't have sd card support but does have dual sim support. You are stuck with the internal memory you buy so make sure you account for that. It is quick with 8gb ram and easy to flash/theme and mod .
In the end it depends if you like to be able to change roms and mod easily, though the S8+ isn't too hard after bootloader unlock (you just destroy any chance of Samsung honoring your warranty) or like to play with some cool little features you may or may not get over.
It will ultimately come down to you and how you use your device...
Just to be clear here, asking a dev forum of dedicated phone owners how their phone compares to the "competition" is not really going to get you anywhere. Most will fight tooth and nail defending their vaunted purchase and you will get a very biased opinion...
If you don't believe me, ask how it compares to an Apple... Now I've let loose the cat amongst the very heavily armed pidgeons...
I chose OP5 over an Exynos S8 because Samsung's software is the worst and I've been burned too many times. Price didn't enter the equation.
Same. Money wasn't the deciding factor for me. I had an S6... the ritual of disabling all the bloat got old. Too many gimmicks. Plus lots of RAM makes me happy.
I'd post in the S8 forum and ask why they chose S8, see what their responses are, and see if you value those things.
Home button and phone unlocking is way better on the OP. Infinity display is nice but also very fragile. I went with the OP5 instead of the S8 for these two reasons and never regret. This phone rocks.
Coming from an s6 then the s8 for a couple weeks, the home button is really nice of have. Both phones have equally lightning fast fingerprint sensors. The op5 would be much less likely to break if you accidentally drop it it.
Only big issue is Facebook Messenger is still freezing a lot when typing or just sitting idle. After several updates it's still problematic and it's only happening on my op5. I started just messaging on my old HTC m9 which still works fine, as did the s8 and s6 and even an s4 I just sold.
A Google search hasn't helped so far and I'm away from home on vacation without my m9 so it's getting frustrating.
Other than that it's been basically flawless.

[Off topic] For how much did you sell your s4? Thinking of selling it but I'm afraid nobody wants it for a good price (~100$)
