Xbox One Controller - Bluetooth Connection Possible? - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
Was wondering if anyone was using their axon 7 with a wireless xbox one S controller over bluetooth, have you had issues connecting? Since apparently, the controller won't work when connected through an USB OTG cable...
Thanks,

I tested a PS4 controller via bluetooth and it worked, so maybe the xbone controller will? Can't you try?

I'm asking because I want to buy, so cannot try myself. But have already heard from other source that bluetooth connection is not possible on the phone due to microsoft firmware upgrade...

I know that exists, but I'd rather not buy something else, if I already have enough controllers at home.

Non Xone controller is not bluetooth. You need a specific adapter.

The Xbox One S Controller does support bluetooth, but apparently only for select android devices.
I'm now looking into the possibility of connecting it through an OTG adapter, see my other thread.

Yeah Xbox One S works via Bluetooth.
On connecting via otg, my phone crashes and reboots.

It might reboot because the controller attempts to charge from the phone. You should try with a powered OTG.

Hi,
Otg works fine with external HDD.
I will check kernel logs and verify.

I'm curious, how much current does the HDD draw? Most full-size HDDs draw 5V 1A, don't know about 3.5 inchers but I've seen some with only one USB2.0 connector (500mA)

And yes, you would be correct ~1A, 5V.
But I can't seem to find powered USB C otg, in my country (cheaply )
Also I have put non chargeable Alkaline batteries in my controller.
Strange.
Additional Query -
Does USB C multi port adapter ala MacBook work with Axon 7?

Woah seriously? Because you're the first one I've found across XDA, Discord & Reddit that says that Xbox One S Bluetooth connection works... Are you running the latest Xbox One S Controller firmware? Also, which android version & rom are you working with?

Also, it's already confirmed that the Xbox One S controller only draws 500 mAh max from a usb port (see aida64 screenshot), so I've always found it to be pretty weird that the Axon 7 reboots on connect due to power draw...

Xbox one S updated with windows 10 anniversary edition. Maybe the latest version.
I have 3 different android devices on android Nougat 7.1, working with all of them.
1. Axon 7 2017 Chinese, 4gb 128gb - stock zte rom - ZTE_A2017V1.1.0B16
2. Xiaomi mi pad - LineageOS 14.1
3. Nvidia Shield TV - Shield Experience Upgrade 5.2
And buttons are mapped correctly too. I have played some games and ppsspp with it.

Hi,
I tried taking kmsg(kernel log) when connecting xbox one s controller to Axon 7.
But I was unable to.
There is no /proc/last_kmsg
And bugreport is not being collected for reboot.
And I cant access /data/tombstones
Additionally dmesg in non blocking on android. So cant take kernel logs when the system reboots.
Any suggestions?

Normally, the phone does not reboot anymore if you have a nougat rom installed, when you connect the controller. Or at least, that's what's mentioned in this thread.
I don't know if you're on a nougat rom or not...

Hi,
I am on Nougat Rom, as mentioned previously.
Initial support for wired xbox one (S) controller was added to xpad kernel driver in linux kernel 3.17.
Chinese Axon 7 Nougat B16 has kernel version 3.18.31 (dunno about USA or Euro versions),
So I theorize that restarts are being caused by kernel panic due to driver problems, but I am unable to check.
I any case xbox one S controller wired OTG is not possible without custom kernel(maybe?) on last years devices, as most of them are on 3.10.
Maybe wait for Google Pixel ).

Ravi

can't connect ps3 controller over blue toot

haha I like calling it blu toot!
anyone had success using six axis ps3 controller app with nook hd+?
I was looking forward to finally having jelly bean on this tablet since
ICS has a tendency to change blue tooth addresses every time it's rebooted.
I ran the free compatibility checker from the play store, it said the nook would work.
So I used the pc pairing tool to change my ps3 controller to the address of the nook.
It won't connect.
I even got a usb gender changer to connect it directly to the nook and pair it, it won't do it.

USB connection with the controller most definitely works, I tried it myself (you can also see it working in my original usbhost video).
I did not look into BT support as it sounds to be somewhat more involved than just pairing (usb connection very easy on the other hand, just plug the controller in and it jsut works (don't forget to turn it on by pressing the "start" button (triangle shaped)).

Referenced from the original usbhost support announcement
aha! but you used a usb hub in the middle! didn't know I needed that.
The thing is though, the ps3 controller SHOULD definitely be able to connect
over blue-tooth, but it isn't with CM 10.1 for some reason...
I can't be the only one that would rather connect it wirelessly.
It works on nearly every tablet ever made as long as root is enabled.
if you don't mind, maybe you could download the free six axis compatibility checker

You would know if you'd check your dmesg to see that the ps3 controller claims it needs too much power to operate (Which it does not).
Also it's addressed in all other usb threads that devices that claim they need more than 100mA need to be hidden behind USB hub (unpowered is usually fine too).

With BT overhaul in Android 4.2 a lot of things broke on fundamental level, I know wiimotes are totally broken, it well might be that ps3 controllers are in the same boat and you'll need to wait until Google gets around to actually release unbroken implementation in 4.3

I guess I might try it one day. But my cursory reading indicates thre's some nonfree tool needed at one point in the process.
The six axis compat checker seems to only check that you have rooted device, and that's all it does.
That makes sense...didn't know it was broken implementation.
thanks very much for your words.
I can verify Sixaxis does work with CM 10.1 because I am running CM on my At&t Galaxy S2. I do not understand why with Verygreen's CM version it does not work. I mean since he is building from CM source.
very interesting...I wonder if it has to do with tablet aspects of cm 10.1
thanks for posting that Ederok.
I did get the controller working, by hooking it up to a non powered hub via usb cable, but would be so much better to use wireless blue tooth.

If it's not fixed soon I might be getting the new N7 when it releases and give my nook to someone else. A big reason that I bought this thing in the first place was so I could have a bigger screen for playing games wirelessly and knew that it was supported by CM but apparently not without its quirks

[Q] XBOX360 Controller on Nexus 4 via OTG?

Hi all, i have just installed the mod for OTG, it work great and i can mount any usb storage =) But now i want to use the original XBOX360 gamepade, the same i use for PC, on my nexus 4. If i plug it in the OTG cable the light in the middle of the gamepad start blinking but nothing happen, it doesn't work =( What i should do?
Is it a wired or wireless controller?
I believe goog added native support for the wired one around HC 3.1/3.2,
but they never added support for wireless ones.
He said its the wired one.
I have no idea if it works. But maybe you can find something in settings/language&input ?
I never got my 360 controllers to work even under Windows so I wouldn't expect too much, haha.

Unless you're running win95, all you need are the drivers.
There's downloadable drivers for xp/vista/7, it's pre-included in 8/8.1.
It might be pre-included in 7, but it's been years since i used it.
Android does include the key mapping profiles for 360 controllers, there shouldnt be any additional settings options for it. But i've never had a wired controller to test it with.
It should automagically map it so that it follows the android default mapping for controllers.

I believe you can use what they describe here under 'Method 1', essentially use an OTG cable to plug it in, then turn the controller on. I don't think you can unplug the controller from the USB cable though, you have to leave it in. http://www.pockethype.net/pair-ps3-controller-android-devices/
Personally I use a Wii U Pro controller with a wireless USB adapter, you might have luck with this PS3 to usb adapter using the 'xinput' setting from the same company: http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Controller-Adapter-Mayflash-Personal-Computer/dp/B00DSFW5MA
I have not used this adapter for PS3 controllers but the one they make for the Wii U Pro controller works perfectly.
Awesome.. tx!! gotta order me a cable then and give it a shot.

But as you know the app uses root access to change some bluetooth mode/characteristics the Remote won't be working until Sixaxis is disabled or Nexus Player is restarted.

Ah.. so you have to disable sixaxis every time after you have used the gamepad. That sucks. Is that just how it is or can it be fixed you think, to have them working simultaneously?

I believe the dualshock controllers use some non standard or proprietary Bluetooth protocols. So to work with them the sixaxis controller app needs to change the nexus player Bluetooth to that non standard mode. So I am afraid that they will ever work simultaneously.

I think this is true of DS3 but not DS4. I am able to pair my DS4 w/ my Surface Pro 2 (Win 8), Laptop (Win 7), my Nexus 5 (on CM 11s), my friends OPO (CM 11s again) and my Droid Turbo (unrooted KK) w/ nothing special required.

As stated before you will need to root your NP and install the Sixaxis app to pair your DS4 with it. The point I was making earlier is that while the DS3 does have a proprietary BT protocol the DS4 seems to use a different protocol that works out of the box with Windows and Cyanogenmod but doesnt work with vanilla Android. Until someone comes out with a custom rom or kernel that builds in support for it, you will have to use the Sixaxis app to use PS controllers.
Well for some reason my ds4 is now connecting to my NP natively but input lag is horrendous. When I try to go back to sixaxis it tells me max clients connected. Now i can't use my ds4.will try to restore the np and try again.

Alright so I took my NP to factory specs, relocked and hen started from scratch again unlocking and updating and rooting. Now my DS4 is connecting properly through sixaxis. If you want to use a DS4 do not try to sync it straight with bluetooth yet it will cause problems, until it is supported properly through kernels or updates to bluetooth it will have some nasty input lag and be unusable.
Tried on day one, no go in my part unfortunately.

No need to DO factory reset !
Use a usb mouse or keyboard ( connected to otg adapter to nexus player ) and goto sixaxis application and click on stop , this will enable blue-tooth service for your original nexus controller.

simple power cycle will enable the nexus remote if you Just disable the sixaxis auto start on boot with currently paired DS3 , In sixaxis preferences> general settings > auto start.
I think the the nexus player ON BOOT will start pairing process , if no remote is paired.
or
you could use the pair button on the underside ( this pairing will not work if six-axis driver is running)
note : you can also pair any phone as remote for nexus player (but this Phone remote will only work for main launcher and apps , but not the in the games ).
Start the BT pairing from the phone (will find the nexus player in search BT devices )
this pairing will also keep the phone in unlocked state ( Trusted device feature ).

Using the DS4 on the Nvidia Shield [NO ROOT]

Alright I finally found a way to use the dualshock 4 controller with my shield tablet k1 running Android 6.0.
The problem I faced was that when I wanted to pair the controller and tablet it became stuck on the "pairing with..." part.
And since the sixaxis controller app doesn't work on marshmallow I started trying somethings and searched for a solution online.
So maybe there are people that are facing this issue aswell This is how I got it working.
1. First download and install the Sixaxis Pair Tool from the dev's website :
Sixaxis Pair Tool
2. Connect the DS4 controller with a USB cable to the pc and start the Sixaxis Pair Tool you just installed.
3. In the box "Change Master" you want to type the Bluetooth MAC address of your tablet, you can look this up when you go to Settings > About tablet > Status > Bluetooth address
* if you don't see a mac address make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
4. After you filled in the Tablets MAC in the "Change Master" box you hit apply and double check if the new "Current Master" MAC address is the same as the MAC address from the tablet.
Now that the DS4 knows for what MAC address to look for you want to install the following application on the tablet aswell.
* Look for the following app : Bluetooth Auto Connect
The reason we need this app is that for some reason the controllers input starts to lagg after about 30sec after pairing it with the tablet, the only solution I found was using this application.
5. So now that we have the bluetooth application installed aswell we can open the app.
*If the app asks you to turn on Bluetooth just hit OK.
6. Now scroll down to the bottom and tap on "Advanced Options" in here you want to change the following settings:
Rety Count = 1
Rety After(Sec) = 1
Device Timeout(Sec) = 5
Continuous Connect = 2
7. When you changed these settings you can turn on the DS4 controller by pressing on the PS button.
8. Now press on the "Connect Now" button at the bottom of the Advanced Options page.
After 2-3 seconds you will be asked if it is oke to pair the controller with the tablet, select yes and tadaaaaa you have a working DS4 controller on the Nvidia Shield Tablet
So for everything works for me, even the button mapper that can be accessed by holding the Options button on the DS4.
I hope this helps a couple of people !
*If you want to use the DS4 with the PS4 again you need to plug it in the PS4 with the usb cable to pair it again.
Going to try this right now!
EDIT: It works great, able to play donkey kong 64 again hah.
Question
When doing this, if I have a MacBook as my pc but a shield tab, when going to dl the sixaxis pair tool from the dev website do I dl the one for Mac OS X or the one for Windows? Also if you go to the page there's two links for the Windows now which of those two did you use?

I don't suppose you know if this would work with the Xbox one controller or maybe the Xbox 360 controller ?

Hi !
If you use a MacBook that means you need to download the Mac OS X version they provide, I don't have a Mac so I have no idea how that works. I did a quick google and found this orikad.com/sixpair_instructions.html I suggest you follow that and it should work.

I'm afraid this won't work for the xbox controllers since they don't use bluetooth, however you can get a 360 controller working if you connect a usb adapter for windows with a usb otg cable.
There is at the moment no way to use a Xbox One controller with any device other can Windows 7,8(.1) and 10 since the wireless adapter only supports these versions of windows.

If you root the tablet you can use this app play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller and connect the DS4 to your tablet with a usb otg cable so you can pair it on your tablet, this is done with 1 press so you don't have to look up the MAC adress etc. However, the app is having problems with newer versions of android 5.1.1+ so I decided to skip the rooting for now and go with this method

[Request] AIDA64 Usb devices screenshot - Xbox One Controller OTG connected

Hi Guys,
Since an Xbox One Controller cannot be connected over bluetooth to this device (check out other thread here), I was wondering if the ZTE Axon 7 does pick up the device when connected over USB-C otg.
I know that button mapping is incorrect or that the controller doesn't seem to work with android games. I only intend to use it with moonlight, which has its own built-in driver.
What I'm looking for is confirmation that the Axon 7 does pick up a USB device when the controller is connected, you can see that if you use the AIDA64 app, under the USB devices section. I'm looking for a screenshot of this app on the Axon 7 with the xbox one controller connected.
You can find an example here.
Thanks in advance!
I'll try it tonight

Ey Znuf, did it work? Apologies for pushing, but I'll have to make a decision on new phone soon, and if aida64 does not pick it up, would be kind of a dealbreaker .
Thanks !
Here your screen sorry. Last night I didn't go to my home

Ey Znuf! Thank you so much, no problem at all .
My last questions and then I'll stop bothering you: which android version/custom rom/device (A2017G/A2017U/A2017) are you using? Specific otg cable that you were using?
Thanks
I'm on G variant with stock room.
The USB cable is a icy box cable ref ib-cb006

@Znuf @TimoVerbrugghe (when you can finally test).
Are you able to play android games when connected over otg?
Like GTA, PPSSPP etc. Android apps...

I've not been able to test OTG yet, will do tomorrow. But already tested with Bluetooth, and it's picked up as a regular controller with correct button mapping for several Android Apps (tried Moonlight & Mupen64).
I can now sadly confirm that while running LineageOS 14.1 (based on Android 7.1.2) on the phone, my XBOX One Controller DOES NOT WORK while connected over OTG, even more, I experience the reboot loop issue.
I've not tried it on the stock rom, but will stay on LineageOS for now. The controller does work over Bluetooth (with correct button mapping in my experience).
