Nexus 5X bootloop of death fix (BLOD) | 7/30 Huge performance update! - Nexus 5X General

Read First: This method is relatively drastic, and will hurt device performance some. You should only use this as a last resort, if the more basic methods of fixing a soft brick didn't work (e.g, factory reset, flash stock firmware, etc.)
*Update 7/30: On my 6P, I found that the original kernel with this mod was using pretty much 1.5 cores, instead of all 4. People with the 5X were also reporting this, so I modified the images to utilize all 4 cores better. It helps performance a lot (able to beat stock 6P in some Antutu marks now, and play intensive games), try it out if you haven't yet!
*Petition:
I made a petition for Google to officially release and sign modified boot.imgs, so that people with locked bootloaders can fix their devices too. Check it out here. (I apologize for dumbing it down so much, I wanted to make sure everyone could understand it)
*Changelog:
8/26 - EX kernel for Android O uploaded.
8/22 - Android O working, boot.img and source uploaded.
8/08, 2nd Change - Added boot.img for 48C firmware (August security patch).
8/08 - Updated EX kernel to version 4.1.2. This updated zip adds the CPU utilization patch to the init.elemntalx.rc, instead of removing the old init.angler.rc and copying the new init over. That should mean more compatibility with Roms/kernels that modify the init.angler.rc. I also modified the camera-daemon to use cpus 0-3 instead of 0-2, so hopefully this should make the a camera bit faster too.
8/07 - Added boot.img for 1 core, just to see if it would work for devices that didn't work with the 4 core image.
7/30, 2nd Change - Added universal EX zip, this zip should modify your kernel to use only 4 cores, and it should modify it to utilize all 4 cores. You can flash this over most ROMs and it should work. Also added a donation url, and this changelog.
7/30 - Updated this fix to greatly improve performance. Before this fix, the device was only using 1 core for foreground tasks, now it will use all 4 cores. Also revamped OP, and added Marshmallow images.
7/23- Created this fix, stock boot.img, twrp, and EX kernel added.
*What this fix does, and how to apply it:
The problem:
The problem with most of the devices in a BLOD, is that a hardware failure related to the BIG cluster has occurred. This fix remedies the problem by disabling the BIG cores. Unfortunately, this does mean that you will take a performance hit. However, I am continually working on ways to improve the device's performance.
The update: If anyone remembers device performance with the first fix, it was hurt a lot, however, after finding out that the device was only using 1 core for all foreground tasks, I modified the ramdisk to utilize all 4 cores more effectively, and it helps a lot.
Requirements: For this fix to work, you need:
A brain
A computer
A bootlooping 5X with an unlocked bootloader/OEM unlocking enabled
The modified files of your choice.
Fastboot on your computer (preferably installed system wide). If you do not know what this is, or do not have it, look at this post. Answer yes to all of the prompts to install it.
How to apply the fix:
Boot your phone into bootloader (hold power and volume down).
Connect your phone to the computer.
Go to the folder where you have the modified files, then hold shift and right click in a blank space, click on "open command prompt here" in the menu that pops up.
In the command prompt: type "fastboot flash boot [name of the file here]" and then press enter. If you're flashing TWRP, replace boot with recovery. (Linux users, make sure you're running as root)
Edit: with the new universal EX zip, you don't have to flash the modified boot.img now, you can just flash TWRP, and then flash the EX zip, and everything should work.
Boot up your phone, and hopefully it should work!
*If your phone is bootloader locked/OEM locked:
You can try to get your phone to boot long enough to enable OEM unlocking. Some users have reported success by freezing their phone for a bit, then booting it. Others have let their battery drain all the way, and then tried to boot their phone, but the most successful method seems to be heating up your phone (a lot).
If you do attempt any of these methods, make sure you have time and patience, as it will take a long time.
To enable OEM unlocking and unlock bootloader:
Go to settings.
Go to developer options, if you do not see that, go to "about phone", scroll to build number, and then tap it 7 times. You should now see developer options in settings.
Once you're in developer options, click on "OEM unlocking" and accept the prompt.
Now reboot your phone to bootloader, connect your phone to the computer, and type "fastboot flashing unlock" Your bootloader should now be unlocked.
*Downloads:
Boot.img from Android O DP6: Download | Mirror. This Image is the from the first official release of Android O, and is modified to use 4 cores. As a bonus, it also disables forced encryption. Thank you to @xls654 for figuring out how to get Android O to work.
Boot.img from stock 48C, 7.1.2 firmware (August security patch): Download | Mirror. This Image is modified to use only 4 cores, and is modified to utilize the 4 cores more effectively. I have had multiple people on the 6p say that first boot takes a while after flashing this, so just wait about 20 minutes before you declare something is wrong with it.
Boot.img from stock 47Z, 7.1.2 firmware: Download | Mirror. This Image is modified to use only 4 cores, and is modified to utilize the 4 cores more effectively. I have had multiple people on the 6p say that first boot takes a while after flashing this, so just wait about 20 minutes before you declare something is wrong with it.
TWRP version 3.1.1: Download | Mirror. This TWRP image is modified to use only 4 cores.
EX kernel version 5.03, for Android O: Download | Mirror. EX kernel for Android Oreo, modified to use 4 cores. You must flash it over the 4 core boot.img for it to work.
EX kernel version 4.12, universal zip: Download | Mirror. This zip is modified to use only 4 cores, and it will also apply the speed fix. Flash this in TWRP. I highly recommend you flash this, as it improves device performance notably, and disables forced encryption. This kernel should work with almost any other ROM, and it applies the core utilization mod from the first image, thanks to AnyKernel.
Boot.img modified to use only 1 Core. Some people were reporting that the 4 core images weren't working for them, someone suggested that I make a 1 core version to see if that helps at all. Here it is: Download | Mirror
For Marshmallow:
Boot.img from the latest 6.0.1 20K firmware: Download | Mirror. This boot.img is modified to use only 4 cores, and is modified to utilize those 4 cores more effectively. Untested as of now.
Ex kernel version 1.2.0 for Marshmallow: Download | Mirror. This is the latest EX kernel for marshmallow, it will keep the core utilization mod from the above image, and should work on almost any other ROM, thanks to any kernel. Untested as of now.
*Source Code:
Source for 4 core Android O DP6: Source.
*Tested custom ROMS/kernels
you should be able to use almost any ROM with a stock based kernel, just flash the EX zip over it.
If you have a custom ROM/kernel that worked for you, let me know and I'll put it up here.
*To improve performance slightly:
Flash a custom kernel. I will upload more kernels as people request more, so stay tuned.
Flash a custom ROM. Once again, I will upload more as people request more, so stay tuned.
Overclock the little cores. It can slightly help offset the lost performance, on my 6P, I have mine overclocked to 1632MHz, and it works perfectly for me. Edit: I actually recommend not overclocking. Many people have reported their Little cores failing, so I would go for longevity on this device, and keep it at stock clocks, or even underclock it. The speed difference you get from overclocking is negligible anyways.
Disable animations in developer options. Seriously, as soon as I found out about this tweak, I've used it on ever single device I've owned, it helps a ton.
*Credits:
@rchtk, His post here gave me the idea for how to modify the images.
@flar2, He built the Elemental X kernel for this device, I merely made a small modification to his kernel to use 4 cores. In no way am I trying to steal and/or discredit his work.
The TWRP development team, they built the TWRP recovery for this device, I merely made a small modification to their recovery to use 4 cores. In no way am I trying to steal and/or discredit their work.
@xls654, He found out how to get Android O working with 4 cores.
*FAQs:
What's the password for TWRP/Why is TWRP asking for a password? - In android 7.0, Google added forced encryption to the data partition. To get around this, click cancel when TWRP asks you for a password, and then factory reset the device. Then you can flash EX kernel/Magisk to disable forced encryption.
Why am I getting an error when I try to flash the images? - Your bootloader is probably not unlocked, try running the command "fastboot flashing unlock", If you get an error there too, then you will have to enable OEM unlocking before you can continue.
It's not working for me, how do I fix it? - My only advice for that is: "Flash the stock firmware for whatever version image you're trying to flash, then reflash the images again" If you're stuck on the boot animation, wait at least 20 minutes before you declare it's not working. If none of that works, chances are you have a different problem.
Does EX kernel have the new speed fix? - Yep, the EX kernel zip should apply the 4 core fix, and the speed fix. It should also work with almost any ROM, including stock.
I would like to help as many people as I can, however, I am much more likely to be able to easily help you/reply to your post if you clearly state your problem and the steps you attempted to fix it. I will be much less likely to reply to posts such as "omggg i flashed the image and my phone won't boot helppp" Please read through post first, I did not spend time typing up this OP for no one to read it. If I can see that you read through the OP and have attempted all the steps, then I will be much more willing to help you.
I set up donations on my profile, for those of you who want to donate. I have spent countless hours modifying, flashing, testing, and helping, don't get me wrong, I love doing this and helping y'all out, but donations really keep me motivated to keep going, and donations also will help me fund new equipment and devices that will help further my android development. Every single donation is appreciated Donate to me here!
If this guide helped you, please click thanks, it means a lot to me

Didn't work
I flashed the image and the bootloop is still there, thanks for the effort though. Anything else you'll need for the 5X to continue your research ?

dang :/ If you can get into twrp, pulling the "console-ramoops" would be helpful, but I don't think you can boot to twrp.

this actually fixes my phone, i do the same with elementalx kernel i disable the big cores as soon as my phone boots up so this img is really handy

Yeah Twrp is not working.

So I just flashed this over the May 2017 build and my phone boots and is working just fine, albeit a bit slowly.
I'll update to the latest build and reflash but for now you can say it works as intended. Thanks for the effort

Gonna try this
Sent from my EVA-L09 using Tapatalk

It's worked for me. Phone is slower, and taking picture with hdr+ is okey but processing is very slow. I turned off animation, is there anything else I can change so phone can perform faster ?

Any idea how long this should take? I managed to get into my 5x and enable debug mode / OEM unlocking
I ran the fastboot flash boot N2G47Z_4Cores.img command and its been stuck for about 5 minutes

This works, thanks. First time I've been able to boot my 5X in months.

I uploaded a custom TWRP image and EX kernel zip. Try flashing the modified TWRP, and then flashing the modified EX kernel, and see if that works.

after trying again I was able to get it to write successfully however the nexus 5x is still bootlooping, this is an original hardware revision nexus 5x if that helps

My first time took around 10 minutes to boot I think, if it takes over 20 minutes, reboot your device and reflash, and if that fails, update your firmware to the latest version.

Are you upgrading from stock firmware or a custom rom? This boot.img is for the latest 7.1.2 build. Unless you have files that you can't afford to delete, I would recommend reflashing your stock firmware with the latest version.

Awesome! I just want to say how much I love your kernel, it makes this fix much more viable.

update: I was able to install twrp and boot into that, but its asking for a password.... @XCnathan32 is there a specific password you set or should "default_password" work?

default_password didn't work for me, I just clicked cancel when it asked for the encryption, and then I factory reset the device through TWRP. If you have important files you can't delete, you can try just flashing EX Kernel, as I don't think EX needs to access the /data partition.

Update 2 : Seems I was able to just cancel out of the password prompt. Flashed Elemental X and it looks like its booting!
Awesome job my friend, you fixed the (temporarily) unfixable. I'll play around with this for a few days and report back.

Thanks!

So I found a bootloop fix for the Nexus 6p here, and some users reported having the same problem with their Nexus 5X.
I do not own a Nexus 5X, but I made a modified boot.img the same way I made the modified 6P image. It simply disables the big cores, as that's what was preventing the 6P from booting.
Please report if this works/does not work for you, that way I can get a good sample size to determine how effective this is.
Disclaimer: I have not tested this, I uploaded this image so testers could flash it and report if it works or not. If your device breaks/spontaneously combusts after flashing this, you accepted that risk.
Edit: A few people have reported this working, so it should be safe.
N2G47Z_4Cores.img, this image is based on the latest 7.1.2 firmware for the Nexus 5X, modified by me to only use 4 cores. 4 reported working, 2 reported not working.
To flash it: you must have an unlocked bootloader and fastboot on your PC. Boot your device into bootloader, and then run the command fastboot flash boot N2G47Z_4Cores.img Hopefully, your device will now boot up.
TWRP3_1_1_5X.img, modified to use only 4 cores, will get working TWRP on your device. Not tested yet
To flash, navigate to the folder where it is downloaded, make sure you have fastboot installed, and then run this command: fastboot flash recovery TWRP3_1_1_5X.img.
EX4_10_5X.zip, Elemental X kernel V4.10 for android 7.1.2, modified to use only 4 cores, I highly recommend you flash this, as EX kernel is faster, and you can overclock to the little cluster to make up for some speed. Not tested yet.
To flash, copy the zip to your device, then flash it in the modified TWRP, just go through the AROMA installer as usual. Changing the BIG cpu frequency in the installer will not change anything, as the cores are disabled.
Additional notes:
Root worked on my 6p by flashing the regular SuperSu zip just as normal. None tested for 5X yet
To improve performance slightly:
Disable animations in developer options, it helps a lot.
Overclock little cores with EX kernel, I have mine set to 1632 MHz and everything is working fine so far.
Set CPU governor to performance (or some aggressive governor), with the BIG cores disabled, the battery is already much better, so using a better performance governor shouldn't be a problem for battery life.
Doing a fresh flash of the firmware/factory reset can help a lot too.
Fast custom roms can also help.
Roms that me/other users have found working with this fix:
Pure Nexus worked well for me on the 6p, insane battery life and very little lag. If you are going to flash a rom, be sure to flash the modified EX kernel over it.
If you find a rom that works with this fix, tell me, and I'll put it here.

MultiROM with Lollipop builds coming out...

14 November 2014
There are several great lollipop builds out there currently with a lot of work being done to give us all a great product. So far multirom is working perfectly in Primary slot as well as secondary slots in multirom with @scrosler AOSP builds 5-7, Build 7 here as well as @scrosler Factory Stock Rooted ROM LRX21P which can be found here
If your favorite dev is making a Lollipop build for the Nexus 7 and you have successfully used it with multirom, please let us know so we can tag it and place a link for future users to this thread.
06 November 2014 (ORIGINAL POST)
Ever since I mentioned this in an email, I have received a few requests on how I got @scrosler Pure AOSP 5.0 Build to work with MultiROM on my Nexus 7 flo.
First off, I have only done this with the build by @scrosler which can be found HERE, but I would guess that it can work with similar builds.
Secondly, this worked perfectly on my device. If you mess up your device, I am not responsible.
Thirdly, and most importantly thank you to:
@scrosler for the lollipop build and all the extras
@Chainfire for SuperSU
@sykopompos for the permissive boot image
@flar2 for the ElementalX Kernel
@Tasssadar for MultiROM
if I forgot to mention someone, please holler at me
Okay, on to the easy stuff...
This has been tested and is successful on Nexus 7 flo (2013). For information on Deb procedures, please refer to this post by @drewski_1 but at the request of @scrosler, please bring all multirom questions back to this thread. Also for Nexus 7 deb, @darkobas has given us a modified boot image to use which can be found here
This ROM (this particular build I've been working with) cannot go into a secondary slot of MultiROM, I have tried everything. If you found a way, please share it.
1. go HERE and read the OP, download necessary files, (latest build, latest gapps, busybox flashable, etc), update bootloader if needed, and goto step 2.
2. go HERE to get ElementalX Kernel for Lollipop
3. go HERE to get a very permissive boot image that works perfectly with this setup.
4. go HERE to get the latest SuperSU
After you have everything in order, reboot into recovery...
1. Move your primary ROM into a secondary slot in TWRP recovery.
2. Go back out to the main TWRP page (outside of Advanced/MultiROM)
3. Install Scotts Pure AOSP build 5.0
4. Install Recovery Saver
5. Reboot Recovery (just to make sure your recovery is still intact)
6. Install GAPPs
7. Install Permissive boot image
8. Install SuperSU
9. Install ElementalX Kernel
10. Reboot and Enjoy
When you get into your ROM, check to verify that your SuperSU is functioning properly and set your ROM up to your likings. :good:
appreciated clarification

I know but tend to forget details over time - THANKS. I like to verify procedures before committing anyway - saves me from bricks soft or hard. With the file structure changes, etc I like to know what I'm getting into and how best to do it safely.
I'm in the process of moving roms and should have this latest L in slot #1 before dusk, heh.
Heads up, the modified boot image does not stick after booting into secondary ROM (IE KitKat or other earlier based ROM), so if this happens just reflash modified boot image. You will be good to go and back to root. :good:
Also, @darkobas has created updated boot images for both FLO and DEB. Would be great if OP could be modified as such. The new images can be found in @scrosler 's thread.
Make sure to have MultiROM zip and recovery installed when trying this method, as the MultiROM code must be injected for it to work well.

Yes, but I think there is a different boot image in scrosler's thread (not for Lollipop preview, but for AOSP scrosler build). It is attached in OP and made by darkobas. Not sure what is different than older boot image.
Also, my secondary are KitKat and earlier ROM's, not Lollipop-should be a different boot image. Not sure if that's the same for you? Perhaps, flashing a KitKat boot may solve the problem, since it seems that MultiROM has to mod Lollipop's for KitKat to work?

Its all good. There's been conversation scattered everywhere, that's one of the biggest reasons I wanted to start this thread.
Edit: Link has been updated to the correct post.
I followed the OP instructions very closely (twice) and can get the primary L rom installed, rooted and running smooth - very smooth, in fact. Nice rom scrosler! But the rest of my multirom roms won't load even the boot ani - I get only to the Google screen and loop there on any rom - I have a jellybean, a couple of kitkats and one of the dev releases of L and they all do the same. I've not yet tried to install a secondary rom but will.
Anyone with a suggestion? I have the new primary backed up and have some nandroids of a couple of the secondarys. I'm not that worried about losing them and have considered starting from scratch if nec.. tia!

Try going into twrp into one of the secondary ROMs and fixing it's boot? Something must've gotten missed in the setup or something happened because this issue is new.

I should use the remove/add boot.img function? I've never done this but will look into how. If you have a link to some specifics it would be much appreciated.

I am able to install/add roms, btw. I successfully re-added a jellybean rom from nandroid backup just fine. I'll probably throw them out except one anyway. I'm not sure what happened or when but I followed your steps verbatim. thanks again.

All the multiform specifics can be found in that thread here.
I would try restoring your backup first and see if that fixes the secondary ROMs. Especially since you don't have much time in the lollipop ROM yet. If you restore and it works, let me know.
@scrosler has build 4 up, please see his thread which can easily be found in the OP, second paragraph.
OP will be updated shortly if necessary.
Okay, I've gone through this a few times now. @scrosler work is perfect unless we want to use it on multirom. Continue the same steps listed in the OP or you will lose root, as well as the ability to boot multiple Roms.
Build 6 is out from @scrosler. Follow the same installation process listed in the OP. Only add on would be that scrosler added a flashable busy box zip on his threads OP that you can flash in twrp around the same time you flash SuperSU.

I have successfully installed @scrosler's latest (build 6) as a secondary rom and in the usual fashion - Flash ROM, Flash GAPPS. I then booted into the new install and allowed Google to update me (successfully). Everything worked but root apps, of course. I then rebooted to TWRP, flashed the beta superuser zip - rebooted and checked and have root. All per usual and as expected.
Titanium bup didn't work after accepting root permissions but it was from the play store so this is also per usual. I'll try the one I got from twitter and expect that to work too - as usual. If not I'll post so here.
This is going to be my daily driver now. :good:
I'll add a custom kernel later. ElementalX 3.x has been solid for me on all lollypop roms so probably that one.

Awesome. I was going to try it with the latest build later when I had some time but you saved me the work.
Besides checking tibu, also check es file explorer. I have both working on this build in the primary slot but I know a lot of people are struggling with es.

ES seems fine - even sees my lan. Also sees and navigates sd card but am unable to do root tasks in system folder (rename, copy, delete). When I do a root action it requests root and I accept then the task fails.

Are you using the permissive boot image from the OP and elementalX kernel 3.01? Just curious why I have full function with ES and other people don't.

Stock ROMs Factory v6.1 , v8.3 , v8.4 , v8.5 , v8.7, V9.0, V9.2-patch : v21

CAUTION TO NOT LOOSE TWRP
I read two posts that say v21, now again on V8.5, put the stock recovery back instead of twrp. This is probably a side effect of a fresh stock /system and wipe of /data.
As a preventive step, when done flashing and wiping reboot to recovery FIRST, before booting the system It will allow recovery to handle removing the recovery-from-boot.p that flashes stock recovery.
I just patched the modified V7.4.2 up to the newly released 8.3 now 8.4. 8.5, 8.7,9.0 -V9.2 Patch
New update has been made from V17 to V21 of the non prime version of R1-HD, Non prime is behind on security patch (2017-05-05)
Copied ROM from phone and made twrp install ROM from it.
* No preloader change (official updates change the preloader to block your ability to use sp flash tools for rom flashing)
* No lk.bin change __ this part is what allows you to choose boot options(boot menu when power and volume pressed together)
* No "FOTA" app Fota has now been left in to make it easier to get next update, if that ever happens.
* No opera browser
* No adds (removed in the modified 7.4.2)
* Custom boot logo (only done on v8.3, there was no interest in this so abandoned)
--Newer versions of rom left stock, Leaving mods up to user.
** while it is not necessary to do a wipe with this ROM, I still recommend it.
**Thanks:
** @vampirefo needed his patched v7.4.2 in order to apply this new 8.3 patch and again for 8.4
** @ColtonDRG OR @jasonmerc I do not remember which one made it: For the image used in the custom logo
and the modified zip is here .
Roms are rootable with SuperSU, flashed in twrp after install. Must be done in systemless mode. In order to patch system veridy in boot.img
Logo update did not work on original rom changing link to updated version
BLU rolled v8.3 back to v7.4.2 because of app compatability issues. V8.4 is there fixed release. Both 8.3 and 8.4 are modified prime roms with ads stripped
V21 is the non prime update.
Unmodified V6.1

I had that happen to my second phone too.
I don't have an explanation yet.
I even made a separate update.zip , that one didn't make the logo change either. I did eventually change it with sp flash tool.
I tried with both recoveries.
and multiple /dev location formats. and for whatever reason my one phone did not accept the logo change from recovery.
And the other test phone it worked.

Neither did I but it all seems to be working fine
Been using this for about a day now, likewise no custom boot logo, but that's fine. Otherwise, it's been running super well. A lot better than the previous mostly stock version did for me with the bloatware APKs removed after the install. A lot of the general idiosyncrasies of the previous version of the stock rom seem to have gone away for me. It seemed to have weird storage management issues, errors moving to SD, broken symlinks that prevent apps from moving or being reinstalled, and a lot of other little non-storage issues, but so far, none off that here.
Long story short, good work! I hope we eventually see proper 7.x roms through some of the efforts going on, but in the meanwhile, your work here has made life a little bit better on 6.
It seems that I was able to get the logo.bin to update when I applied the original update patch, but not when I used the same line in the rom install.
It is no big deal that it did not work, I was just trying to make it look different at boot time.
edit:
I think i found the problem with the logo not updating.
i used the update-binary from the official patch update. (the one that allowed the logo to change the first time)
and it changes . so since the ROM seems to install the way it is , only the logo didn't flash I put it in a separate update.zip if anyone is interested in it.
EDIT 2:
clarification.
It was not so much the binary allowing the logo to change but the format of the partition location I had been using that needed that binary.
Further test had shown me that I could have used the binary I was using but just change the partition naming line
Code:
package_extract_file("logo.bin", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p9")
the above code works with the same update-binary as rom install
But I was using
Code:
package_extract_file("logo.bin", "/dev/block/platform/mtk-msdc.0/11230000.msdc0/by-name/logo")
Taken straight from the official patch, and thats why it needed the update-binary also.
I dont know what is different in the binary other than , major size difference.
The powered by me logo was just a test file to see changes in the logo.
**logo-update is same as composite but with alt updater-binary
**composite-logo screenshot is in op
**stock logo will return to original BLU logo

Hahaha the scribbled "ME" is hilarious. Your work is awesome, I don't think anyone using this rom will have an issue with the boot image but thanks for being so helpful and explaining.
P. S. Do you have any plans with the Nougat update?

Nougat is going to take a full build from scratch. We don't have 100% identical hardware with any other nougat device to my knowledge. We might have the same MTK chipset, but there are several other differences. All we really need is an official device overlay and the vendor files released by BLU themselves. We can then apply those to the latest Lineage or AOSP (I prefer AOSP myself) and build. Then the only problem we'll run into is anything that has changed in 7.x that isn't compatible with our kernel we use in 6.0. It'd be a slight chance our current kernel would work without some patches on 7.x We can't even get our official sources for anything else, so I'm almost certain we'll not find any patches to for the kernel to work properly with Nougat, at least not from BLU or any similar devices. None The less Nougat has been well thought of, and we have been trying to debug issues with a broken Port. But a broken port from a different device is just that - Broken. We need a team of knowledgeable devs to build Nougat + Kernel from scratch and then we'll have it working. I can't do it alone with the old computer I have, the R1HD would be long forgot of by the time I got Android Compiled haha.
Mr. Mazak I flashed your rom it went smooth, I was hoping the newest update was for 6.0.1. But I didn't lose any functionality, hopefully on my Cricket Service this update has patched some things to the radio device that will retain connection more steadily. I experienced a lot of coming and going with the 7.4.2 rom. None The Less you did a good job with this update Mr. My suggestion is find the same MTK chipset with a fully working 7.x rom and just port the /System but keep all our libs and inits from this release just for a test starter. And don't replace the camera app thats in AOSP 7.x. )

It was just wishful thinking. I have no idea how all of this is done. All I know is @mrmazak has helped me to fall in love with my phone again with this V8.3. The 7.4.2 did seem a bit buggy for my phone but this update works beautifully and I didn't even root it. If this remains true I will be happy with this phone for awhile even on 6.0
Really confused right now.
I was browsing through the settings menus. And found in the Settings-security- menu a toggle labeled "quick boot" ( not to be confused with "fastboot") . I enabled it then rebooted to see if it booted quicker. Didn't seem to make much if any difference. So I went back to turn it back off. And it wasn't there. I checked in my other phone , it wasn't there on that one either.
Did any body see this menu item, and if so where is is it?
Edit 1:
Few more power off , power on cycles to compare times. With other phone and defiantly seems to have turned on some faster boot option.
This phone goes from off to on in 5-6 seconds other phone takes about 20.
Edit 2:
OK , I panicked for a minute.
Couldn't find the setting and thought that it was another way to block sp flash tool by preventing you from ever being fully powered off.
But the setting was in accessibility not security.
Mrmazak, first of all, thanks for the ROM, installed it yesterday. But I have a problem with SELinuxModeChanger app. First, I'm getting a security warning when installing it, then - when running it. And another message, with this app running - "can't obtain root", although SuperSU shows its status with green #, like every other app it gives root privileges to. On my other Prime phone, running 6.1 out of the box stock ROM, FM radio works just fine with SELinuxModeChanger app behaving flawlessly (no security warnings whatsoever). Any ideas?

The mode changer app is technically a security issue. I did have that warning a few times when using mode changer app from the XDA thread of the developer, then when I used the app downloaded from f-droid it worked with systemless root and didn't give the security warning.
The app downloaded from f-droid worked for me as well, many thanks!
Big thanks for getting this out, updated from previous debloated, rooted version to this modified 8.3 stock rom, rooted with SU v2.79 SR3, all is good - only App that won't show up nor install, even tried the ones off APK Mirror site - is my Dunkin Donuts App, LOL. Play Store now said it's not compatible and the APK started to install then failed - any ideas or suggestions on what to do ??
Otherwise, it's all good - I will survive without DD App, just run that from another device when I need my caffeine fix.

I also had an app that previously work, say is not compatible now.
Maybe has to do with apps that have links to pay accounts. And that has something to do with trustzone. (Tee1 & tee2)
Those sections I left out of the update. I will add it back in and test. Update when I do. It is also possible this problem is why Blu rolled back there update.
**EDIT**
well that didn't go well at all.
I flashed the new trustzone.bin files from the official update. Now phone no longer turns on and no longer connects to flash tool
**EDIT 2**
After much persistence and many failed attempts to get phone recognized in pc again. Finnaly got to a point that phone was cycling between "preloader" driver and "usb serial device", and with careful timing was able to start sp flash tool at just right time and the flashing back to original trustzone files seems to have recovered phone.
for the record i am not sure what steps made it work. But I was shifting back and forth between leaving phone sit on charge, then on charge with rubber band wrapped around power button, then not plugged in , and not plugged in with rubber band on power button.
Okay... persistence is key in customization, i guess! I am getting somewhere here!

Finally got thru the steps in order (1-2-3-4) then Step (5) and sub-step 1. I can also boot to TWRP.
Now this brings me to this thread, 8.3 Stock ROM. The thread assumes one knows how to install it and I suspect this could be as easy as uploading it to a folder in the phone then booting to TWRP and INSTALLING the ZIP file? Could someone clarify the steps to install this 8.3 ROM?
Thanks!

Yes. You are correct
Either put the zip file on external sd card , put card into phone boot into recovery mode and install , or put file directly onto phone .
Many ways to do that.
Easiest is to copy to phone while phone is connected to PC.
Cam also download file from internet with your phone.
Bottom line is get zip file to the phone boot to recovery and install
Anyone else having wifi issues after upgrading? While watching videos it seems the internet cuts out. The phone says it's still connected but I have to turn wifi off and back on for anything to work. Could be my router also but it didn't seem to be doing this until I installed 8.3

Right on man! I am officially running 8.3 ROM with April 5th 2017 Security Patch Level! Geez.. it was not easy but I got this working!
MrMazak, I followed all your instructions on both links, so could you tell me what exactly I have on my phone? Is it rooted? Bootloader Unlocked? The phone seems to be working fine but I don't know what level of access I have. Honestly I don't even know exactly what the differences between all these terms are.
Also, do I have or not SU? One of the steps under the .bat I believe install it. How do I access it?
Thanks again!

New 6P owner, returning to Android after a few years away, seeking recommendations

Hey, was big into the android scene years ago, switched to other platforms for a bit just to play with them. Got a used 64 gig 6p and was thinking about dropping a custom rom onto it, but I don't know what's good anymore. What's the most stable, daily driver, minimalist rom out there? Wouldn't mind SOME extra features like task/notification bar customization and things like that. Stability and rock solid performance with great battery life are the concerns. Thank you!

I'm running f2fs file system with ABC oreo build & superUber kernel. I'm on latest radio & bootloader from 8.1. it has been pretty solid. I was on Pure Nexus nougat & Flash kernel; this set-up is tried & true. The Superxe ROM is aroma based and has 8.1 preview although I haven't got to try it yet. Hopefully this might point you in the right direction; there is a f2fs twrp build(s) in the 6p development thread if your interested.

Awesome reply, thank you for the heads up. F2FS is new to me, I'm guessing
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne...recovery-twrp-2-8-7-0-touch-recovery-t3234976
is the thread you were talking about? I need to get it bootloader unlocked and rooted still, i'll probably tackle it when i get home and drop that version of TWRP onto it. Thanks again!
so it looks like the tools like Wug's are all very outdated, are they safe to use anyway on my device that has all the latest stock stuff? like 8.0 and my version aren't listed in Wug's at all.

Here's the link to the unofficial twrp for 6p with f2fs support. Don't forget to check the box in twrp "Use rm -rf instead of formatting" after changing data and cache to f2fs. Make sure your rom and kernel support f2fs with kernel being mandatory for best results. Here's the link:

I'm sure that unlocking the phone with the toolkit is safe. It's the method I used. Also in the link above or in the 6p section it should have any info you may need. You can flash recovery by vol dn & power button into bootloader(fastboot), and once you "cd /path tofolder with recovery image/" & "fastboot devices" to make sure you can see your 6p and drivers are installed correctly, you can rename twrp.img to recovery.img & they command is:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
I recommend going to xda 6p section; general, & questions, & answers & reading up on everything just to be on the safe side and very important; make backup at all times just to make sure if there is a "booboo" you can easily restore. If you need adb & fastboot installed, there is a thread here on xda "15 sec adb & fastboot installer".
I hope this could help and I hope you enjoy as much as I have.
Latest ROMs which gives me good performance and battery life are paranoid (still nougat, but always a winner), latest 8.1 with pixel 2 mod and aicp rom with kernvatore kernel.
Buying a 6P for good battery life may have been a mistake...

Battery life on stock has been as good as my iPhones 6s. Does charge slower though, even when it's rapid.

Clockwork mod is no more, TWRP is the new standard recovery.
Nexus/Pixel line by google gives you the minimalistic ROM you would need,ie. stock ROM
Try stock rom for a while. Heck, i got so used to stock , I havent rooted my phone since ages. Atm i have moved on to pixel, and i am perfectly comfortable with stock ROM. I guess custom ROMs only attracted me when i had devices whose software cycle were abandoned by their OEM's.

Just now finally rooted etc. My issue with stock was it would crash and reboot sometimes when unlocking it while something was playing over bluetooth. Not going nuts with advanced feature roms, but honestly at this point trust the devs here over the crazies that Google hires these days. Just keeping it safe simple and solid.
You should try the SuperXE Custom ROM on 8.0 with the Pixel 2 features/addons. You should also give PureNexus a try, if you're not so satisfied with Oreo just yet. I'm currently running the Android 8.1 developer preview and I love it, the battery life is great and the ROM is fluid with little bugs.
alright, i thought i had rooted, i guess not. I'm unlocked, i used wug's to root, but it's not sticking. I don't have super user, and i cannot boot into recovery without using ADB. If recovery is selected from the bootloader menu it just brings me to the default android recovery with no options and I have to hold the power button down. I've tried manually flashing the recovery via fastboot and it's the same story. I tried booting into twrp via fastboot and flashing the superuser zip there but it's not in my app drawer. Everything seems to be successful when the operations are running. What gives?

the recovery does not stick on stock ROM if you don't flash either supersu or magisk. So you need to put the .zip of either one of those on your phone, then boot to bootloader and fastboot flash the recovery. Next, you boot into the recovery and flash the zip that you put on your phone.
you are now rooted, and your recovery will stick.
I'm currently on stock 8.0 waiting for paranoid android 8.0 update

I had flashed the super user zip in the wug kit myself while in TWRP but it still didn't stick. I mentioned that previously but i said a lot of other stuff too i'm not suprised you missed it. I guess I'm probably flashing the wrong SU and will look for another.
edit - grabbed the latest stable super user and it seems good now
What's this vendor image that's a thing now? You have to be tethered to a PC to flash most roms due to it nowadays it seems. Radios used to come in zips i could flash in twrp as well, what happened to that?

[TOOL] Unblod - Fix your Nexus 5X that's in the bootloop-of-death

INTRODUCTION
We all know the famous bootloop-of-death on the Nexus 5X and there's finally something we can do about it, thanks to XCnathan32 who devised a fix that works on all security patch updates by Google. What Unblod does is quite simple. It's a tool that automates the entire process of generating a boot.img that runs on 4 of the A53 cores. It's all about just a few taps and right now supports only Windows!
PREREQUISITES
A Windows PC
A boot.imgfrom any ROM of your choice (even stock)
if ( you're unsure which ROM's on your phone ) - [Difficulty = Easy] [Recommended]
Get the stock factory image of the Android version of your choice
Extract the ZIP
Follow the instructions described above to flash the image onto your device
Move into the extracted folder and open the image-bullhead-<build_no>.zip
Copy the boot.img from within to your desired folder (e.g. Desktop)
if ( you know which ROM's on your phone ) - [Difficulty - Intermediate]
Download the boot.img of the build that corresponds to that of the ROM on your phone from here or here (for Android O)
Copy the boot.img from within to your desired folder (e.g. Desktop)
A BLOD-bricked Nexus 5X
With bootloader unlocked
In fastboot / bootloader mode
About 15 minutes
STEPS
Download the attached ZIP
Extract Unblod.zip
Launch Unblod.exe
Tap Load and browse to the location of the boot image that you'd copied sometime back in step 2-1-5 (e.g. Desktop)
[Recommended] Check the auto-flash box if you'd like to flash the modified boot.img automatically onto your phone
Connect your Nexus 5X in bootloader / fastboot mode to your PC
Tap Run and wait for the tasks to complete (i.e. till the status field says idle)
After about a minute or so your device should boot
NOTES
Wait for a while as the first boot would take quite some time on the smaller 4 cores
If you'd like to flash a recovery, a modified TWRP recovery image is required as the unmodified ones fail on 4 cores - get one from here
You'd have lost root by now so consider rooting your device again (by flashing Magisk / SuperSu)
Feel free to lock your bootloader
BUGS
None at the moment. The tool is in BETA right now though it has been tested for complete success on my Nexus 5X as you can see in the attached screenshots. Kindly let me know if there are any bugs! Also if your device is suffering from a motherboard failure or any other kind of hardware fault, Unblod ain't gonna do no magic. It does what it says and I take no ownership of your bricked device!

STEPS
As simple as just extracting the attached ZIP and launching Unblod.exe! The rest just follows and requires just your presence of mind (and a bricked Nexus 5X in fastboot mode, of course). All you need to do is make sure the build of the ROM that's on your device matches that of the boot.img supplied - that's more of a precautionary step. The rest is self-explanatory! Make sure you leave your Nexus 5X in fastboot mode connected to your PC if you choose to use the auto-flash feature that's bundled in.

The BLOD as indicated in a popular XDA post is due to the A57 cores breaking (I guess due to thermal throttling). I also heard in a certain Reddit post that it's due to contact pins breaking underneath the A57s. So this fix just disables the A57s and the phone works fine on the A53s.
Thanks stifmaster81!
Please provide some step by step instruction, and pre-installation requirements to run this tool, thanks.
Okay, fixed the problem, great tool and it works!

Does the phone need to be rooted/unlocked for this tool to work and fix the bootloop?

Hi
I'm stuck at fastboot.exe error
AdbWinApi.dll is missing
My Nexus 5X have this version of android: OPP6.171019.012, Nov 2017 (8.1 DP2) and yesterday I got bootloop, my warranty is gone (bough phone over 2 years ago ) and I never modified soft, no root etc.
Thanks for any help.
nvm.
I forgot to check bootloader is it unlocked and it's not.
Probably now there is nothing to fix it
I've tested, tool works but I faced wrong behaviour and don't know what was the reason - my custom ROM or some kernel error.
I use ABCrom for Nexus 5X and have to combine it with modified EX kernel since my 5X in BLOD. Goal was to use native ABCrom kernel which comes with rom.
I did wipes except data/storage, flashed ROM zip and modified ABC 4-core-boot from unblod tool. As result phone boots up successfully, but all MAC addresses are gone, attemps to switch wifi causes systemui crash so it's unusable and I did all wipes to revert back.
Maybe it works fine with stock kernel or requires some other way of integration modified custom kernel back to ROM zip, not just by flashing it over or by replacing boot.img file in ROM zip.

I'm really sorry for such a late reply which is because of not receiving any notifications! Interceptor1910, the issue is because ADB and Fastboot hasn't been configured on your system. The ZIP natively supports systems without Fastboot configured, but looks like there's a small issue. I'll update the ZIP in another 15 minutes and update the OP. Thanks for bringing the issue to light!

Hey enqless, glad to know that you've used the tool. As you stated, the issue seems more of custom kernel specific. Maybe it works well with a few custom kernels (haven't tested it personally). I'll be heading back to college next week when I can test it on my buddy's Nexus 5X that's got a BLOD with the ABCrom kernel that you've mentioned and let you know of experience. Thanks enqless!

That's ok) Thanks for your work, first of all, for maintaining all us to stay alive. Otherwise, our 5X would be laid on shelf as brick long time ago.
With unblod tool we can definitely prepare 4-core stock kernels by ourselves, Just to go ahead with further firmware updates as our device is still supported, without waiting and exploring forums until somebody posts modified kernel.

[RECOVERY][TWRP][Unofficial] Galaxy Tab Active 2 - TWRP 3.2.3-0 [Exynos]

Disclaimer
**** All flashing is done at your own risk! ****
**** While this recovery should not break your device, don't come back here blaming anyone if it does! ****
This is a TWRP 3.2.3 build based on Android 7.1.2 source kernel for the Galaxy Tab Active 2 (codename: gtactive2lte) - Exynos. The "tar" file should be installed using Odin (tested on Odin 3.12.3).
Special Notes:
1. DON'T FORGET TO ENABLE "OEM UNLOCK" (located in Developers options, if its not there, you may have to wait for a few days to access that option, some users claim that its within 10 days before this option appears).
2. KNOX will be tripped once you flashed custom binaries to your phone.
3. Samsung Firmware OTA (aka System Updates) will no longer work once you flashed custom binaries.
(You can flash custom ROMs if you want to keep the OS up-to-date.)
4. It is HIGHLY UNRECOMMENDED to purchase any access to any kind of private forums, ROMs or Kernels.(DO NOT GET FOOLED.)
Installation process:
1. Flash Stock ROM.
2. Flash recovery using Odin (AP = recovery.tar).
3. Load recovery immediately after flashing.
4. Format data (Will erase /data partition).
5. Reboot to recovery.
6. ADB push SuperSU to internal storage / insert SD-Card with SuperSU.zip.
7. Flash SuperSU using TWRP install option.
8. Reboot to system (May bootloop several times. Wait untill system loads).
Bugs:
1. ADB sometimes doesn't work in MTP mode. Need to manually change to PTP in order to get adb usage.
2. Bad label in ADB shell + bad characters appearing while writing through AD. Works well out of recovery and on recovery's terminal.

Thanks for the work and sharing. I'm excited to try. Having root would be great, but I'd also like to be able to make voice calls ( using bluetooth as the built-in speaker & microphone aren't adequate ). Do you think this is possible. What changes, if any, are required to have work with T397 Tab Active 2 ( US variant ) ? I'm sure that it's mobile frequencies are different than what the euro-spec'd T395, but otherwise I think identical.

Well, Samsung has a nice repo of their source kernels for every phone Samsung sources
I guess we just have to validate some data taken from boot.img from the stock rom and then build the same with the appropriate source kernel.

Had no idea the source was available for these devices, thanks for sharing. T397 source is in the repository. Let me know if there is something that I can do to assist. I've not compiled these sources although I've compiled other things. Possible to use this tablet as a phone with this ROM as stock T397 ( even after installing several different dialers does not dial ) ?

I can't check the dialer thing, as I don't even have cellular network on my Tablet.
I'll try to build the recovery for the T397 later today, but you will have to check it I guess, as I have no access to that one.

Ok, so this is a first try, so I believe it's not going to work, but who knows? we may get lucky.
Recovery for SM-T397 - Android 7.1.2
If it doesn't get installed or leads to a bootloop, I'm gonna need you to pull the boot.img from your device, or send me a link of the stock ROM if it's available.
Please follow the intsallation process described on the README file on the github repository

Thank you! Successfully installed. I found this video helpful for this generation of Samsung device and learning how to navigate recovery and download modes. I disabled auto-reboot in ODIN per your instructions, but it wasn't clear to me how to power-off after download so as to be able to go into recovery without booting so after adequate time I just pulled the battery. I'll spend the evening playing with things and report back, but so far everything seems to be working

One thing I notice, 7.1.1 is what was/is installed on my tablet now. Not sure what version of Android available on Samsung Opensource or how to check it, but I suspect it is the same since nothing has been pushed OTA.
7.1.1 is what The T397U should have already been on before you started. Mine is and I have not installed this recovery as of yet. Just wanted to let you know it's where it should be.

Awesome. I really had my doubts being it the first build and all. I guess, there aren't really any major differences.
If it's possible, can you go through the TWRP checklist here
Some of the tests aren't really necessary, but it's a good checklist to go by anyway.
That way, I can officially add it to the OP.

Sorry for delay. I've done the following tests all with the expected results. The only thing I noticed compared to previous installations of TWRP that I've performed ( some years ago ) is that the load time of recovery seems long at 1:15. Also a message about "RECOVERY NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING" which I suspect is normal. Tablet has been working without incident. Thanks again.
Blocking checks
- Correct screen/recovery size
- Working Touch, screen
- Backup to internal/microSD
- Restore from internal/microSD
- reboot to system
-ADB ( yes, if this means being able to access from ADB while in recovery )
Medium checks
- Screen goes off (and on )
- F2FS/EXT4 Support, exFAT/NTFS where supported
- all important partitions listed in mount/backup lists
===> define important ? - depends on the device, i guess
= Assume we can still boot a recovery (aboot/lk is still there for fastboot), can restore everything left ?
- backup/restore to/from external (USB-OTG) storage
- Correct date
Minor checks
- MTP export
- reboot to bootloader
- reboot to recovery
- poweroff
- battery level
- USB mass storage export
- set brightness
- vibrate
Security Policy Updates should not be applied to this system ?
Since this is stock Samsung OS that is rooted I'm guessing this system is still SELinux "enforcing" so does this mean that I can/should say yes to Security Enhancements automatic updates from Samsung ? Any explanation or link on this matter appreciated.

Hey, sorry for the very late answer.
I'm currently not working on Android and I've never tried on OREO, so my politically correct answer would be: "Right now there is no plan to work the same magic on OREO, but whoever wants, can try to use the device tree I created with a new official OREO kernel (didn't know they have one already)".
Anyway, keep checking the forum from time to time, I may have found the time to work on it
Links to the device tree and other tools used are in the main page of this thread.
Thank you,
Shedaim
I Pay 100$ for making my Galaxy Tab Active 2 booting when its charging
Hey guys,
i hope somebody can help me.
Im trying since 2 Weeks to make my Galaxy Tab Active 2 booting when its charging.
I try all the ways i found (fastboot, LPM change and Autoboot App) and nothing was successful.
So i hope to find with this way somebody who would help me to get the feature.
I need it because i installed the Active 2 on my Harley Davidson as my navigation.
And the problem is that i make a Novalauncher thats looking like the original Harley Davidson one and starts without a code.
So when i put the Tablet in the Mask i dont get a method to press to power button and when i make a method (hole trough the mask or something) then everybody can start up my tablet and use it.
So if somebody can help me with that i will pay them 100$ for helping!
you can contact me at [email protected].
thanks alot

I used the methods and recovery here for my tablet which is a T397U...works flawlessly. The same should work for the wifi T390 you have aswell.
Flash process
I am new to the rooting process. This will be my first time. What is the actual flash process? How do I flash the rom on my tablet?
All the links are dead can anyone please post this recovery
i can Flash this twrp-3.2.3-0-gtactive2lte-7.1.2.tar, Odin says pass, but there is no TWRP. it boots into System. when i stop and boot to recovery, there is stll custom recovery from T395XXU5CSH2.
Any hints?
