'Restore' your display to 'original' - Fire General

I don't know if this will work on the Fire 7. I hesitated and didn't post here because I don't think it will:
I bring to you another script, courtesy of Amazon. This one might not suit a lot of you, so be prepared. Like most of the tricks we've tried this past week or so, even resetting the reset, may not be to your liking and can only be reverted via factory reset.
Titled 'Display,' it toggles at least three modes. i didn't quite understand them so I went ahead and ran the script in Terminal Emulator. This was also in /system/bin.
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ cd /sdcard
[email protected]:/sdcard $ sh display.sh
usage: display [<device name>|reset]
<device name>: the name of device (e.g. apollo/thor/soho) reset: setting orignal value of display for this device.
It changes size, density and values. The last one sets it back to "original value." I don't have a before shot, because I wasn't expecting anything. Cleaner, brighter, crisper and in my opinion, more HD.
1. Go to /system/bin
2. Locate file: display
3. Rename to display.sh
4. Copy to internal storage
5. I used Terminal Emulator
Code:
$ sh /sdcard/display.sh
Enter the command that will "reset to original" and you get sharper screen, brighter and more vibrant. Your text may look a bit smaller and folders on home also. I think this is the HD the tablet was missing.
Display Configuration:
Code:
/system/etc/display_conf
Code:
# Please add new device using the same format.
# The comments begin with "#".
device=apollo, size=1600x2560, density=320
device=thor, size=1200x1920, density=320
device=soho, size=800x1280, density=240
Followed by...
Code:
/system/bin/display
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ cd /sdcard
[email protected]:/sdcard $ sh display.sh
usage: display [<device name>|reset]
<device name>: the name of device (e.g. apollo/thor/soho) reset: setting orignal value of display for this device.

Apollo Thor and Soho are fire hds codenames. All three have higher pixel densities then the current fire 7. So my guess is you are just changing the pixel density. Android will render like 1 inch is 240 pixels instead of 170. Not sure how the resolution change will factor in that because the size doesn't match the actual device.

Yep - there are side effects deviating from the default (160 ppi) on this device, mostly with the stock launcher but occationally with apps as well.

Yeah, but the screenshot doesn't do justice. I didn't a before shot, because I was just fooling around. I didn't think anything would've come of it. The only thing I did was scroll through the screens and when I was done, I "reset to original." I didn't add a device name. The first shot is the "before" (It's one of the few screenshots of the desktop I have). The second is the after. It's a shame it doesn't look as good as a shot, as it does in real life. The wallpaper is definitely crisper and sharper. The text is super clear. I wish I knew what the screen was set at before.

Nexus S 4G screen accuracy

So I took the time tonight to measure the color accuracy of my Nexus S 4G with my equipment. So without further a due:

Cool, looks like the Nexus did pretty well
btw the images aren't loading from me, I have to right click them and open them in a new window to see them.
Pictures should be fixed, or at least showing up as more than just links now.
I have no idea what this means.
Its usually a test done for TVs to see how close your TV is to the reference standards.
In the first picture it tells you how uniform the brightness of the image increases.
The second one is how close the color is to pure white (equal balance between red, blue, and green) at every 10% increase in brightness.
The third graph is gamma. A little harder to explain but this basically shows if the display will appear darker or brighter as a whole.
The final shows the actual outputs of red, blue, and green at each brightness. The lower portion shows how much it deviates from reference.
(Any HT junkies out there, yes I know I'm using the term brightness incorrectly here only to make this more accessible)

so, do you think you can make a color profile that is in every way perfect?
Not with the kernels I have seen. Most only have one point of change (ie color multipliers in Voodoo). Something perfect would take quite a bit of battery use I would imagine as most image processors that can create "perfect" picture are usually stand alone units costing $1000 plus.
I can also tell you each screen is not the same so what might be a perfect profile on my screen would be different for you. Depending on plenty of things including screen age.
Heres my Voodoo settings I used for the measurements I took
Color profile: Voodoo v1
RGB multiplier:
R=1769117440
G=199667
B=216805280
I did not touch the Gamma settings for the measurements but there is room for change there.

Do you have a specific set of numbers you believe are the best for what is available currently through Voodoo?
Thanks for the great work.

General Thread for LCD Densities for GSIII I9300

I only realised now the beauty of changing DPIs, and I'm sure different settings work for well for different people etc etc so I decided to make this thread for people to post their seperate configs/methods (Xposed settings included), to compare different settings and to hopefully make the topic easier to understand and find information on.
You guys should know the drill, no spamming/silly arguments and follow XDA Rules.

Q/A -
• WHY SHOULD I CHANGE MY DPI AND WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
The main difference and main reason that people switch densities to a lower value is because a lower DPI = smaller icons/fonts etc which leads to a larger workspace - i.e You can fit far more things onto the screen. It also gives the phone more of a "phablet" look.
Below I will post before and after pictures for you to see for yourself what the change occurring is. I personally don't advise 200DPI unless you have really good eyesight - 240 is better for people who have normal eyesight.

• HOW DO I GET THE RIGHT SETTING?
The only thing you have to avoid doing is reducing the DPI too low to the point where you can't read/see the screen properly - going down in increments of 20 is a method to avoid this. It's a painfully slow process but if you want an optimal density for you, then it's the best way to go. If you just want a smaller, decent size, then you can always go for 240 first time and see if you like it. (Use different apps over the course of an hour)
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
**METHODS**
- AOKP based ROMs generally have the feature of changing DPI. It should be somewhere in settings. They list the whole process and practically baby you through the process - it's simple to do.
- Some apps can help you do it - e.g PimpMyRom. They all also tend to list the whole process rather than showing you step by step.
- There is also the Xposed App Settings module for Xposed Framework (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401). It's settings allow to configure DPI on a per-app basis. So if you like 300 DPI for your phone in general but like the 240 DPI Gmail, there's no stress involved.
- Some ROM developers may provide a ZIP to flash that will change the DPI to whatever DPI the ZIP is configured to change to. If you use this method, make sure to wipe Market data before flashing and upon reboot.
- More to come as people share their own methods.

I guess I'll get this thread kicked off - I'm using 200DPI ATM, I have good eyesight so the small font ain't a problem to me. Tbh, I far far prefer it this small. 240 DPI is near enough as good if you don't have strong enough eyesight for 200.

I started on Insanity at 240 and in 2 brief years my eyesight has declined so much that 320 dpi/TW (touch the icons and go "wheeeeeeeeee"!) Is a necessity nowadays

[Bootanimation] My Custom SlimKat Bootanimations - Round 01

NOTE: this is a crosspost from a thread I just made over in Android/Themes, but a question was brought up and I realized that maybe there are more considerations to be taken in terms of specs, specific devices, etc if posting in a forum that's not specific to one device. I'm still a n00b on xda, so please let me know if crossposting is not allowed, and if you know anything about the issues already brought up by a CM user over on that thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/themes/bootanimation-custom-slimkat-t2819693
Anyway, figured since I made this for my N5, i'll come back and create a thread for it for fellow N5 SlimKat users. Enjoy.

Hello XDA,
After my first attempt at a custom bootanimation was fairly well received (Custom CarbonROM Thundercats style), I decided to try a variation on the existing SlimKat bootanimation since I've swtiched over to Slim and haven't looked back.
BTW I still intend to do a Thundercats variation for SlimKat, since it only seems so fitting (cats and all). But for now, I cooked up something that just jazzes up the official one a bit. I've made them in the original Slim blue hue, as well as a pink one because my phone is themed to be black, neutrals and neon pink, so it's my preferred version for myself.
Previews (the GIF compressions take away from some of the finer details, don't let it dissuade you from giving it a shot)
**V3: made it look more seamless between the google splash screen to bootanimation. also tried to clean up some weird artifacting and got the filesize way down

The images look nice and clean. Everything seems well thought-out. The transparent, multi-textured band running over the text on the loop section is interesting....
What the heck is that thing?!
One issue that I see (maybe) is the desc.txt file; I'd normally expect permissions of 644 (rw,r,r). As extracted, I'm seeing 755 (rwx,rx,rx). It probably doesn't make any difference though.
The only other issue is putting "KAT" in the logo. "L" (Licorice? Lima-bean? Lollipop?) is right around the corner. Calling it "SlimROM" might be better long term. Maybe not
Keep up the awesome work. I'm looking forward to seeing more stuff from you.

Disabling low fps in the UI. End result: The most fluid phone you will use.

First of I created this thread because it seemed like people where having success in getting rid of the lag and stutter they see. Ill explain why LG implements this in their phone later on. First of lets get to binness.
The option is hidden in the dailer menu. Its the last option called dynamic LCD refresh off/on.
Here is a pic:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
When you press it, select screen fps and it should disable the dynamic fps system which reduces the UI frame rates and causes perceived mild stutters. Shut the phone off for 10 seconds and then turn it back on. The settings should stick.
60fps is smoother than any phone I have ever owned. This phone never lagged out of the box. LG implemented this feature that changes the screen refresh rate dynamicly. So while you are using your phone normally in the UI, it drops the animation FPS to 30 fps. This apperantly conserves battery.
It is kinda like the same thing that Nvidia does with their mobile gtx 800m GPU's. They give the user the option to set a target frame rate and then the cpu/gpu only works hard enough to meet the target fps, never working harder than it has to. This is basically bringing down CPU/GPU utilization and saving battery life.
Example: If I where to play Titan Fall on my PC and set the target frame rate to 60fps, my CPU/GPU avarage utilization will be 80%. If i set the target fps to 30fps the my CPU/GPU avarage utilization will be 60%, saving me battery life.
I hope this makes sense, and I created this thread to give some people awareness about this option. The 801 soc breezes through this QHD display.
Update: For people who are having sticking issues, try to enable both of these options. It is not a 100% though, but try your luck.
I'll give it a shot. I personally don't know how much better this phone could get for how I use it.
---------- Post added at 01:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:05 PM ----------
I followed the instructions but after boot it did not stick so I will see if it sticks by just switching off and just using the phone with a reboot.
My setting also did not stick after a reboot, but it seems smoother... doesn't make any sense unless I'm imagining things.
Sent from my LG G3
Is battery life the only downside to doing this or could it affect the life of the display over time?

Mine stuck for me after a reboot. Definitely feels quicker on its feet. I'll report back with any additional battery info or if I'm just imagining things.

Maybe higher resolution. All the ones it downloads are crappy.
Nice wallpaper..android L is coming [emoji2]
The thing is, many people still use 2G in India here. And when the screen turns off, the wallpaper would be half downloaded & already set. As a result, many people see grey backgrounds of what looks like a graphical glitch. I've found a workaround but it's not very battery friendly though. Just select stay always on for the screen timeout as the wallpapers are being downloaded & once you're done downloading the wallpapers, you can set your timeout as desired. Just make sure that the screen doesn't turn off while a wallpaper is being downloaded. I hope I helped & I'm looking forward for the dev to fix this. The wallpapers are really sweet!! Thanks!
