Made a complete ZVA dump - Sprint LG G5 Guides, News, & Discussion

So after following some basic instructions that i still managed to mess up
i made a complete dump on zva. which means a debrick image can be made.
if we had the needed firehose.bin we could possibly fix hard-bricks in qfil in qpst.
I'm uploading said dump to my google drive but kinda reluctant to share it in fear if u used my dump then u might also get my iemi. so once i figure that one out i will make it available to all

So i was looking around in a few of the files in my hex editor and noticed. Id have to pull it up on i think bootloader backup. That user debug is set to 0. Wonder if its modifiable to set to 1 and enable a debug bootloader

Any idea how to dump the PRL? QPST 2.7.460 crashes when I try to read the info from the phone. LGUP might be able to do it with the proper LS992 DLL, but I can't find one that works.

Kinda a long shot but could we inject root into the system after boot using the sd card method of loading a dump?

Interesting idea, have a link or can you go more into detail about loading a dump via SD? This is my first LG and I'm still trying to figure some things out. My Samsungs were so easy to root, flash TWRP in Odin, flash SuperSU, done.

I originally had the root shell from December but it was useless and I ended up flashing a newer KDZ file and have not been able to downgrade yet so for me that method is out and was not working and I have been looking for other options.
So far have two options. https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/lg-g4-100-root-success-directives-root-t3180586
UPDATE: The send_command.exe does find the phone so testing to see what happens here
UPDATE 2: Que the haters LAF got me forgot about that guys sorry. So looks like LGUP may be the only option if we can figure out how to convince it to work.
UPDATE 3: Purposely bricking your phone gets you into LAF mode. You have to stop it at 10% on a KDZ update and it will allow you to use LAF mode again.
My other option is use the "expanded" version of LGUP and flash the system partition.I have tried extracting the system partition and flashing but having trouble getting LGUP to flash .img to the system. Seems to only let you choose where to put the partition if you are using a .dz or .kdz file.
As for the SD method, I read a post about using the SD card with a dump of the phone to recover from a hardbrick. Not completely sure of the details on that.
The G5 is not currently my daily driver so am able to experiment some with it.
P.S. Disclaimer to anyone who comes across this reply looking for root. I know some about what is possible with this phone but do not quote me as fact as I can and have been wrong before

Hello, I need urgent help, I tried an unlocking service for my G5 and the person using the remote server bricked my phone. It is not stuck on download mode, I cannot even get into recovery. I don't know how to reflash this phone, I think if I had the correct .dll for the LG flash tool it would help me greatly as I could at least try to flash it. Thank you for your consideration.

Just wondering about this but is the reason the original tool posted by unmentionable names removed because it involves purposely bricking your phone? I found a forum post on the G4 about this and tried it with the G5 and I can get into LAF mode although limited on the newest bootloader version.

Okay. I posted on another forum and asked one of developers of that tool if they'd be willing to let someone try it who doesn't really care about the fact that you could brick your phone so here's hoping they'll let someone else try to finish the tool and get something working. Didn't get anywhere with the kdz method so thought I'd try stirring up the hornets nest again by asking.

I replied to jcase at the end of this post on the tmobile forum. Thought about PMing him but its supposedly taboo to ask about the tool they posted so I figured I'd see if he would reply. Any other ideas let me know. I really want to know how they got root working and if it was full root or just user debug as the full root is helpful but userdebug was not as useful.
Really hate it that someone was stupid and released it early and got them ticked off about it.

VS980 TWRP bootloop after botched lollipop OTA while rooted like a dummy

So yeah. As the title says I had a rooted VS980 on 4.4.2 with some bloat removed and I accidently hit the wrong button when prompted for the upgrade, I was in a hurry. yes, I'm a moron, and yes, I know this is probably wasting someone's valuable time and I thoroughly apologize for my n00bishness
having said that, I have tried to go through various tuts but none of them seem to be working. yes, it's likely that I am simply doing it wrong, but whatever the case I am stuck with my phone in a bootloop always returning to the TWRP recovery. I believe that means it is soft bricked so I'm hoping this can be fixed fairly easily with the right direction and some patience for my ignorance. I can't seem to get it into download mode with turning it off, holding the volume+ button and plugging it in, it just goes to twrp. :'(
my hope is to get a rooted lollipop. if that is not possible then I would be fine with going back to stock or possibly even a custom rom if it's not too awfully complicated. honestly, I'm at a point where I'm beginning to accept that I probably shouldn't be screwing around with it too much and will likely bite the bullet and just keep my phone stock since there are really only a few minor irritants that make me want to root it.
any help is very much appreciated.

actually, it doesn't look to be the same problem. i dont have download mode, but i do have recovery. it boots to twrp like a champ. what i think i really need is how to get the flash file VS98011A_01.zip on my phone via ADB Sideload, specifically when i cant get the drivers to work.
i've tried the following drivers:
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.14.1.exe
LG_VZW_United_WHQL_v2.20.0.exe
LGUnitedMobileDriver_S50MAN310AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3.10.1_3.10.1.0
I may very well be mistaken about what needs to happen, i'm no expert, obviously, but from everything ive read any of those should have worked. i think if i can get the right flash on the phone i should be able to flash it via twrp no?
I"ll help

i just happened to have a brand new data cable, tried again with same result so its not media related unless there is an issue with the plug itself, but it's charging and the Device manager shows the correct name ie VS980, it just has a yellow bang on it and i cant find a driver that changes that.
read some more and found others with the same issue apparently which led me to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715408
which is where i found the "download mode restore" file you mentioned(i didnt see it in the thread you provided), but without the ability to get adb usb command to work i dont see how i can use it.
any ideas?

from

but when i reboot, it goes directly to twrp still.
wat? :'(
ok, installed this:
VS980 39A Firmware
from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g2/development/vs98039a-stock-fw-t3051560
rebooted, went straight to twrp again.
installed
Restore to 100% stock
from the same page.
rebooted. it went into an upgrade screen that errored and then rebooted before i got a chance to write down the error. but when it came back up, it started "android is upgrading".
so it looks like this may have worked. again, will update the success/failure when i know for sure, but thanks for the help yall. i really do appreciate it.

Yep, now another problem though. ..no mobile data. .. working on it.
I'd suggest flashing the files in post 12 (I didn't and am having TONS of problems)
So I really didn't get a fix- still working on it.
I have no download mode, and not way to get the serial port to display in device manager, so the LG Mobile support tool won't see my phone....

[UNBRICKING] Research on Unbricking Method for Zenfone 2

TESTERS NEEDED
The main intention of the threat was to find a way to restore a completely bricked zenfone 2. It is apparent that we are not having a spare bricked device to test upon.
Anyone with a Bricked Zenfone 2, A PC, and willingness to devote time, please participate.
Otherwise, this thread is going no where as we people who are searching for methods do not have bricked devices(And do not want to specially brick them for testing)(Obviously!!!) and all talks are in taking us nowhere.
Click to collapse
"Bricked Devices" is a regularly heard phrase on XDA. Sadly, Asus devices dont come with a dedicated PC Companion or PC Suite software which can safely unbrick a Zenfone just in case someone is able to damage fastboot.
That Said, there have been Zenfone 2's that have been Hard Bricked in the past months. Fortunately, many of them may have got replaced as the device comes with a One Year Warranty. But what after that...???
So, i wanted to do some research upon this unexplored topic.
On successfully Hard Bricking your device, you will see something like this :highfive:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
( credit to the one who bricked and clicked)
I do not have a bricked device, but if anyone can get one and test stuff, we may end up getting something concrete to restore in future.
So, i came across a page: http://www.asus-zenfone.com/2014/11/how-to-unbrick-zenfone-5-and-zenfone-6_8.html
But soon i understood that all these things are foreign to me ( So far ).
Also, The drivers for the SOC are for CloverView Plus Devices.
It would be seriously great if we can successfully recover from corrupt fastboot. As without fastboot we can do absolutely nothing.
I request senior members, Devs and all others to provide inputs and links and keep this thread productive.
Who knows, someday we may end up in a situation without warranty and with a corrupt fastboot.
I will keep on updating this thread with updates from your side
Lets Start.
So that method in the link is like the Odin for Samsung, or the NvFlash for nvidia. Except that it is for Cloverview (32 nm SOC) vs Moorfield (22nm SOC) which is what we have.

I looked further into it and what we need is the DNX_FW, IFWI, DNX_OS, and OS files for this device. This guide has more details on the Intel Manufacturer Flasher, which seems to be a version of the xFSTK downloader? The downloader seems only to write files (or download files) to the device, not generate them or copy them from the device. Someone with more experience would have to do that.

Learning is a never ending process. And i have learnt a lot from others in this place.
And regarding this thread being inactive.
I have got a few things, but they seem irrelevant to me. Searching for something really solid in this regard. No point in posting irrelevant findings from my side and bumping up the thread.
I am going to get a bricked Zenfone 5 (Sure) and Zenfone 2(Hopefully) from a local repair shop.

Hey there!!
Check out this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/xda-assist/intel-phone-flash-tool-t3129091. Its for Zenfone 5
The Guy has stated that he found the Necessary files by unpaking the boot.img, which can be found in the firmware zip available on Asus Support website.
Alternatively, you can get it from Here. But these are older ones. I would recommend the Asus website though.
The Intel Phone falsh tool is available at https://01.org/android-ia/downloads/intel-phone-flash-tool-lite . Try it out.
I have wiped my Linux and windows partitions as i am installing Windows 10. So this is all i can help you with. If you need any information, Just Ask. I will do my best to help.
As for extracting the boot.img, do a quick google search. XDA has a thread for that. You need either Linux or cygwin.
All the best!!!!

Hey,
I just stumbled upon something.
I downloaded the latest OTA zip package (20MB) of the ze551ml
I opened the ifwi folder
And i found the bin files. DNX FW etc of various zenfone variants.
Can you throw some light on this???
P.S.
Folder screenshot attached!!
Here's some more info I found on the IFWI images:
Two special IFWI images are used for booting in this mode: _dnx_fwr.bin and _dnx_osr.bin. These comprise a simple flash tool that writes a raw image to the eMMC boot partitions and another to the main eMMC space. xFSTK is provided with paths to the IFWI image and a eMMC image. The eMMC image contains an OSIP header (location/size of U-Boot in eMMC, load address, and entry point), a partition table, and partitions with U-Boot and the U-Boot environment.

So the dnx_fwr.bin is probably this file:
Code:
dnx_fwr_ann_a0-mofd_v1-ze551ml.bin
The ifwi.bin is probably this file:
Code:
ifwi_ann_a0-mofd_v1-ze551ml.bin
I checked the MD5sums of the different versions and they are different. I guess we need a bricked ZF2 to test and see. Although we still don't have the OSR files. Perhaps @shakalaca can help us.
Okay right
I just had one last week. I tried everything i could. Finally i gave it back.
And Today i stumbled upon this.
Ill see if the guy still has that bricked zen.
Thanks for your reply

Good day sir, i was just wondering if this reseach is still going. Still unable to find any solution to my hard bricked zenfone 2 ZE200ml. Im somehow counting on this. Goodluck!

LG Has made it harder for us to download KDZ's from their website. So now we have to glitch it out for KDZ to download.
TO INITIATE DOWNLOAD OF MIRRORED KDZ DO THIS
Click link. Refresh the page. Then your download should start after that.
If that does not work try pasting the link into this website.
Then rename the file to *.KDZ.
Or if you have Linux, you can copy the link and run wget command to download.

Please DO NOT flash a KDZ that is not meant for your model. It may lead to a hardbrick. It may flash fine but will be irreversible.
Download KDZs here (Each file can be downloaded individually, don't click the top button that says download, it downloads ALL the KDZs in that folder. It's 23 GBs! Please try not to kill my servers by downloading unnecessary files!)

I have both MetroPcs and t mobile. If you want you can try using LG Bridge to update the phone, basically does same thing but it's more user friendly and it always downloads right package. But to recover from brick I think LG UP only way to it.

That does not seem safe at all. That sounds like you could brick your phone. You should never try firmwares for different models. If you want upgrade use correct model. MetroPcs is k7ms330.

yeah i know thats why i wanted to use twrp, i already have the version with the button combo and as long as i dont flash the recovery i wont have a issue with restoring, hardware wise they are the same and i've done the same with galaxy s3's and 4's between [email protected] and T-mobile also done this with some LG optimus F(and some number 90?) between boost and sprint so i know it's possible and as long as recovery is accessible it should be alright

yeah i know that's why i was asking if you had one you had backed up before you logged into google, on another note no one else has posted "stock" recovery flashable zips and it would be helpful for people that dont have backups and have become soft bricked without having to re-root flash TWRP and unlock the bootloader.

I hope its not just my phone but...
I have the MS330 (Metro) and i followed the steps. Worked just fine. But im having issues with the phone. Actually its just one MAJOR issue. SEVERE battery drain and, may be bad to say it this way, but i hope someone else is having a problem too. I really hope this is a Metro KDZ problem and not my phone going bad. I know its not the battery itself because i have used 3 different batteries, one being brand new. And this is my only phone. I need to figure out how to fix the problem. I think its ***10g update LG supplied. And i need to find a way to go back to the original stock system before this. I think it was ***10e. Does anyone have a TWRP backup? I cant take this battery drain. Please say something if you had battery drain also.

I've heard having KingRoot instead of SuperSU kills battery. But I'm not sure. Pm @goitalone I think he knows of unofficial kdz with the old version. If he does, please send it to me so I can post it here.
I always replace kingroot with supersu. It always replaces and fully removes kingroot. I flashed twrp beta 1 and it works just fine. I use adb to restart to recovery and do what needs done. And i have busybox installed and i use xtreme booster. Thank you for that info though. I have seen the battery drain with kingroot. I will pm him and see what can be done thank you.

You could reflash KDZ and use this method to root, IDK if it will help http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/root-lg-k7-install-supersu-kingroot-t3413941 Make sure you boot into recovery instead of flashing. Root it then you can flash.

[Guide] LG G5 Back to Life [Download mode] [LG Flash tool] [Unknown model in LGUP]

Overview::Well, something bad happened to my phone (H830), then LGUP said unknown device. I tried many tools, different KDZ but all went failed
What Actually happened in my case:
I had mm stock 10d ROM then I upgraded to 20a using LGUP KDZ method by using uppercut trick. I wanted to enjoy Fulmics 1.5 (for my H830), but was newbie so had no idea about rooting it and installing (Because all available guides were actually complexed or I was impatient to read other things except main procedure). So I did something strange and Fulmics was installed over 20a ROM, because I was unable to wipe internal storage due to that decryption thing.
So I thought, I should go back to stock by using LGUP and retry the procedure with more focus. This time LGUP didn’t know my phone, not with that uppercut too. I thought that’s because I unlocked bootloader and must first try to lock it, and try again with LGUP. I retried with locked bootloader and failed again.
(Remember, LGUP or any other tool have nothing to do with back to stock thing. You can go back to stock whether you are bootloader locked or unlocked, it has no power of stopping you.)
Possible Cases:So I will not waste the time. Possible cases:
1: LG G5 stuck on download mode and it is now not being recognized by LGUP and you can’t do anything, because no other tool is available.
2: You installed a custom ROM and now LGUP is not recognizing it. You want to go back to stock and can’t do it.
3: Anything bad happened during flashing process, PC restarted, phone went off or whatever. And now you can’t bring it back to life.
¬ Or
Other cases you faced.
Read 4th post before proceeding,
Before asking a question, first, see FAQ in 3rd post. In that way you can save a lot of time.
For Video Guide refer to 4th Post
Things You need:
1: LG UP
2: Uppercut
3: Drivers
4: Stock ROM for your device.
All Herehttps://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/development/uppercut-lgup-loader-g5-variants-t3511295
5 : LG Flash tool (the one used to bring LG G2, G3 back to stock).
I used 20a KDZ because I had it already and it was nougat with vulnerability to root and flash TWRP.
6: LG Firmware extract tool
In 2nd post
Most tools can be found in attachments of 2nd post.
Process:
First:
Uninstall all other tool, previous driver (including other phone’s too). Restart PC
Just to avoid problems. I tried this process many times on Windows 10 64-bit and it always worked for me. So it has no problems with new Windows OS.
Now follow procedure in exact order.
1: Install LG drivers.
Put Phone in download
(Hold Vol+ and connect to PC while it was powered off).
Wait until it finishes installing drivers. Change COM Port to 41.

Now DC it from PC and keep it staying in Download mode.
2: Install LG Flash tool and copy megalock.dll to installation directory or it won’t work.
3: Install LGH-H830_DLL, LGH850_DLL and LGUP_Store_Frame_Ver_1_14_3.
4: Extract LG Firmware Extract and copy Stock KDZ to that folder.
5: Run WindowsLGFirmwareExtract.exe
A: Click on “KDZ file” open and select stock KDZ.
B: Mark File Name. It will select all files. Click on extract KDZ button. Wait till finished. Now quit the program.
6: Run LG Flash tool. Select Manual mode. Click “…” for dll and select LGUPc.dll from that KDZ extracted folder.
A: Click on add button of S/W, Select “All Files” from pop up window. Now ““.KDZ”” file will be shown, select that ““.KDZ”” file, press open button, click on “OK”
B: Begin download by pressing that big “Yellow Right Arrow”. Wait until it finishes loading.
C: Connect phone when LG Flash tool says “Waiting for connection”. Make sure phone is in download mode and COM port is 41.
D: After a while it should fail the process, that’s fine. Just DC Phone, do not turn it off.
7: Exit LG Flash tool and Run it again. Select Manual Mode. This time select LGUP_H830.dll (Select as per your model e.g H850.dll for International variant) from LGUP
(Download it from 2nd post, then extract and select as dll for this step only.)
Folder. On S/W section first click on “Remove All” to erase old selected KDZ from tool and select “.DZ” (not “.KDZ”) as S/W from extracted KDZ ROM.
A: Press ok, Select on big “Yellow right arrow”. This will be loaded quickly. Connect the phone again. This time the process will get started. Wait till it gets completed.
Note: This flashing process will go up to 150% so don’t get nervous or don’t DC phone.
B: Phone will be restarted automatically. A big “2” will be shown. Wait till it gets converted into “3” and tool will say pass.
if so pull battery and start phone normally.
Or
If it is not converted into 3: Happened to me for first time.
(First Quit LG Flash tool)
Pull battery, reboot again into download mode. Run Uppercut, say “Yes” to consent, LGUP will be started automatically, Now LGUP will recognize the phone. Click on upgrade, Press “…” and browse stock KDZ ROM and select “.KDZ” stock ROM (not “.DZ”)
Select Upgrade because Refurbish won't work with uppercut.
Press Start. Download will get started. Wait until it finishes. Now Your Phone is back to life.
Ask If anything wrong happened, I will try my best to help. I used this method on my device, LG G5 T-Mobile variant AKA H830. It should work for others.
Hit Thanks, if I helped you.
If I forgot to give credit to anyone who is related with these tools, please let me know and I will be happy to name them.

FAQ
I got confused on which Flash tool to use and with this megalock stuff?
Ans: Thanks, you asked, Just download LG Flash Tool attached in 2nd post, unzip, install tool, there will be a megalock.dll too, copy that to installation folder (by default that's "C:\LG\LGFlashTool") and overwrite, (written in install.instructions too inside zip).
This method isn't working for me, what shall I do?
Ans: The possible reasons, for that not working, might be,
A: You didn't installed drivers properly, try uninstalling old drivers and restarting after that.
B: LG COM PORT isn't set to COM41, here is guide for that.
C: And Most important, You are not following steps in the order in which they are written, so read carefully.
I followed the method and now my phone is totally live but now I want to root my device and have TWRP, so I can have full freedom with this phone. Can you give me any thread for that?
Ans: Nice question. There's a lots of nice threads out there here's a thread currently covering H830 only but you are welcomed to try this on H850 and let me know if this works so that I can update the thread.
Can I lock my bootloader again so I can take OTA updates?
Ans: First of all, always remember, bootloader has nothing to do with OTA. It means that if your phone is flashed with stock rom without any root or TWRP and bootloader is unlocked, you can take OTA uodates without any brick. So there is no connection between OTA and bootloader.
But if you still want to lock bootloader, here's the process. Make sure drivers are installed and minimal adb & fastboot is installed too.
Take battery out, put it back, hold vol- and connect phone to pc with data cable, it will boot into fastboot. Enter command in adb & fastboot cmd windows,
Code:
fastboot oem lock
fastboot reboot
Your phone will now try to boot into system, if stock rom is installed phone will boot without any issue else you will have to flash stock kdz again.
Where I can download stock KDZ or dll for my LG Phone (other than G5)
Ans: Most LG Phone KDZs can be found at this website.

I tried your process 4 times to no avail. my computer can't recognize the device. I'm done trying. Thanks for trying to help. But I'm just gonna sell it on ebay for like $200 as a damaged device. I've tried everything and I don't need the stress of rooting anymore. this phone did it in for me and rooting devices. Anyone want a H830 for the low price of $200? i kid! BUt ya selling this thing. thanks guys.

Good luck with that. :?
OP, I would like to make a suggestion. Could you please include screenshots to illustrate the steps. That will help people to better understand the steps and to make sure no step is missed as this is happening to lots of people lately. With that it will save you from replying to posts of missed steps and make the thread clean. Thank you once again.

Welcome..
Thank you so much man! :good: I managed to brick my phone yesterday while trying to root it... and this just brought it back to life!!! You're my new hero... :victory:
I'm now on H83020a, looking to root. If I fail and brick it again, can I just bring it back to life with this method again?
Btw, do you have any tips on best method to root H83020a?

You are welcome.
Here is the thread I wrote to root h830 on v20a. You can try
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-g5/how-to/guide-root-twrp-lg-g5-using-t3580264
I'm still working on it so write your experience and suggestion for the thread after trying...
And off course you can bring your phone back to life for everytime, as long as you can access that download mode.

ZVA toZV8 DOWNGRADE!!!!

So FIRST OFF IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SOFTBRICKS HARDBRICKS,DAMAGE TO VEHICLES,BLOWN MOTORS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT!!!
ZVB And higher DO NOT ATTEMPT AS HARBRICK CAN AND WILL OCCUR
Again ZVC and ZVB. Do Not Use This Guide. There is no firmware to recover from
If you upgraded to zvb/zvc or higher when available do not use this.
You will be stuck in firmware update. No system no recovery.

Great news about the downgrading, sucky news about your device. Hope you get it back running.

I flashed the zv6 tot and kept getting an error but like said i was passing the antirollback. I think lgup doesnt like the zv6 tot. But 5 times i wiped the partitions as long as i didnt reboot and directly reflashed zv8 in the same session i was good.
And it hung the last time and i nudged my crappy usb cable like a idiot i rebooted
I am in 9008. No worries. I got my old s5 up and runnin. I think of i can fmake a debrick img just like other lgs i can boot from sd card. I put g5 in the drawer for a few days to think about it.
It's always great to be able to downgrade, but what would this be useful for? For a possible root method?

Or for people like me who had the G5 given to me flashed to Boost. I can't use it on a CDMA network unless it is flashed back to stock. They did away with the plan my friend was on... it was given to me on ZV9. Very helpful.

Thats what im working on now adapting this to the sprint g5. I got kdzs extracted gonna try a diffrent zv6 tot 1st one i got i think is a bad download.
Just been real busy to try. And i dont brick my only phone.so im not all desperate and freaking out. Thats normally why im not scrared to test stuff out. Its just a phone. Yea i loved it but i know one day even 3 or 4 years from now might be fixable.
Just throwing this out there, when I did this Google Play Services kept force closing, I uninstalled Google Play Services for Instant Apps and it stopped. Went from ZVA to ZV8 with no other problems though.

The screen shoulda never been black. Shoulda been dl mode the whole time. Plug into pc and look in devoce manager and see if its the qloader9008.
Also if it made it to 100% there shouldnt have been no issues. As the fone usually reboots when pc shows around 80 to 85% try looking to see if u can boot recovery fac reset or dl mode any more....
thank you, is there any zva to re flash it?
or how to get boot back?
when i connect it to pc in device manager only this appairs "LGE AndroidNET USB Serial Port (COM41)"
