Need a T-Mobile user with an unlocked bootloader to test something out - T-Mobile LG G6 Guides, News, & Discussion

i have modified LGUP to flash individual partitions, but being as i do not own the G6 i cannot test it out for myself. if someone would like to test out possibly being the world's first G6 user with TWRP on it please respond to this!
EDIT: I have gotten a tester and my modded LGUP will dump the partitions of the device, but will not write yet...

There's hope.

Ok now where is the file? i'm new with g6 always do nexus give the instruction and i will test for you i'm ready to test and root my great first Android phone without root and i'm love how its work with out i can't imagine with root!!!!

If you upload the files with some instructions I can test it. How likely is it to brick the phone? Assuming it's only trying to flash a recovery it shouldn't be too hard to fix if anything goes wrong, but I just want to be safe.
This is my first LG device so some instructions on all the LGUP stuff would be appreciated.

Ok . I have unlocked my bootloader. What do you me to test?

[Q] How to Root?

Hi guys,
Anyone know a way to make root in Moto X Play it work?
Or can you use the method of CF-Root Moto X (2014)?
I did unlock the bootloader through the website of Motorola. It worked.
Tks.
(Sorry for my bad english)
Obs. ROOT process in post # 14
No TWRP/Root available as of yet. Give it some time, I guarantee you that XDA will basically be the first place it's posted when it happens. Keep in mind that the phone is just starting to roll out, but not in the US so it might take a while longer for somebody to get on it.

Even still, unless you REALLY screw something up, most of the time you can get away with it. (not sure how Moto X devices show the unlocked bootloader status and such).
....Note: Don't take that comment as fact. Your mileage may vary
Curious how developers figure out how to root. Is there something that's needed (besides having the phone, obviously), do we need kernel images from Motorola?

I don't have the device, so I won't be making a recovery for it, but it's not a particularly difficult process to make one. It took me around an hour to port TWRP to the 2015 Moto G, and it should be similar for this device. You can use a prebuilt kernel if sources are not available, but I think the 2015 Moto G kernel will actually work on this device. Moto will be releasing the proper kernel sources for this device soon anyway.
You just need to create a device tree and compile a recovery (such as TWRP). The recovery device tree doesn't need to be very thorough (the way ROM device trees are). It just needs to specify information about partition names and locations and kernel boot parameters etc. It should be a trivial modification to make my 2015 Moto G TWRP device tree work on this device.
Once you have a working recovery, just flash SuperSU with it and you'll be rooted.

A quick glance through the other Moto forums here on XDA would give us a good clue. I'm too tired to check at the moment, but if nobody else does by the time I wake up, I'll check then.
Good News! My Moto x play is rooted with the Moto G 2015 method.
Below process we did and it worked:
1- Through the forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/orig-development/twrp-twrp-moto-g-2015-t3170537
I downloaded "TWRP-osprey-2.8.7-test1.img"
2 UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip downloaded at: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
[Copy to your internal SDcard]
3 Place your Moto-x in fastboot mode [Power + Vol. down]
3- install TWRP-osprey-2.8.7-test1.img with the command: fastboot boot TWRP-osprey-2.8.7-test1.img
[Installation is temporary, I tried to permanently install but did not work].
4. The recovery will open automatically, browse to the location where you saved the SuperSU and flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
5. Restart.
I did this procedure and managed to get root, I'm not responsible for any damage caused to your phone.
Did you have to unlock bootloader before installing it? On my phone, I have an unlocked bootloader and it did work but perhaps people would be interested in trying it with a locked bootloader (less risk of voiding the warranty).

My bootloader is also unlocked.
I believe you can not do without unlocking the OEM. since it would not be possible to install recovery.
If someone is on a locked bootloader and want to test, we can see if it works. But I believe that is not possible.
I'll gladly test it with a locked bootloader when I get home in a few hours, if it hasn't already been tested by then.
Just tried it with locked bootloader, no joy. Device downloads the boot.IMG but errors booting it and just stays in bootloader mode. Guessing needs the bootloader unlocking first.

Yep the method shown here does work on the Moto X Play, you will get back to the normal boot logo.
has anyone tested installing Xposed after rooting yet? I'm assuming the same procedure should work (fastboot boot recovery.img > flash xposed.zip)?

The Xposed is a .zip file, you need to install the TWRP via flash.

LG Stylo 2 (LS775) root?

I had an LG Volt before this, that I rooted manually. However, I have yet to come across any method to rooting the LG Stylo 2. Is there any method as of late?

Heya - Yeah the boot loader will unlock from ads fastboot in a sec. the fastboot on the phone (I have the ms550 Metro version) is crippled, however. it will not fastboot boot so you can't just grab a twrp and test it by throwing it at it. I would like to test more, I'm willing to flash whatever since I know the download mode will let us fix all....I'm just trying to get a kdz file so I can have it in the background just in case I totally F it up
Obviously without the twrp I can't flash any of the su versions.
My spidey sense tells me it's not that far away for us. Just be patient. I love the phone ( I liked my G Stylo as well)

If I'm not mistaken I believe the phones are pretty much the same specs still aside from the camera. I have a bootable TWRP. If you run ATB you can boot into this trip without installing it I'd be more than happy to upload it for you guys. I believe the original maker was either Game Theory or DrakenFX.

Can you do that for us along with instructions? I'm kinda scared to do anything with my Stylo 2 since its basically untested and it is my daily driver.
Here ya go...boot zip with instructions
When you are supposed to boot the zip... Type in : fastboot boot.zip instead of twrpblah blah blah....i renamed it to be easier
Any way to flash this twrp thing your talking about without a comp..ill be honest ive only just started to root the last couple phones i owned and have tried to flash any kernels or roms or custom recoverys...but i really want to change up this stylo 2..and the opting out of adpotable storage lg sony and few others did is drove me crazy..i wish i woulds known before i bought this dumb thing

I'm confused. Does installing TWRP get us any closer to root? I mean it's good to be able to get a backup, but it's really root that I want.
Style 2
If boot loader is unlocked in a sence u can get root by pushing su right? And how do u get into factory recovery?
In the event that this fails (Since I have the Stylo 2 and not the Stylo) and my phone bricks, is there a program to de-brick?
Hmm, When I type in "adb reboot bootloader", my phone reboots. back to the lockscreen.
Mine does to I can put it in fast boot with out the PC but then can't get PC to find it that way

Any custom ROMs available yet for the H915 Canadian Version (Freedom Mobile)?

LTE band 66 service and OTA updating is disabled through the DirtySanta root exploit on the stock build when rooted. I was hoping that there would be a ROM or two for the Canadian version of this device. Need something relatively stable, with nightly updates, and with support for AWS 3/Band 66 connectivity
Any leads are are appreciated. Thanks!
Considering the 915 isn't even a supported device no. If someone has gotten the 915 please let me know.
Until FREEDOM Mobile allows the LG V20 LOCKED bootloader to be UNlocked, there will be no FREEDOM to have a custom ROM anytime soon
That is what I got the T-mobile version with the unlockable bootloader which works great on NON-freedom.

Ok so here's my theory.
Basically we can root and have twrp but the problem is that signal ceases to exist afterwards which we assume is caused by the bootloader. Someone posted that they fixed their signal issues using the hidden menu features. But they didn't elaborate if they were rooted at the time and that was the direct reason for losing it in the first place. Nor have they replied. So that part is unknown. It may or may not be an option. The other question I had was is it just wind users who lose signals or does it affect wind devices that are unlocked but being used on other networks like bell, etc.
Anyway those are the unknown things that I'd like some clarification on. But in the meantime here's a theory I have that may or may not work if the above signal fix doesn't work.
So if the above fixing signal doesn't work via that hidden menu then we should be able to confirm the bootloader is the issue. What that means is that we need to have stock bootloader in order for everything to work.
But you cannot have stock bootloader with twrp unless you've "bumped" your recovery which we cannot do.
So my theory was to follow the whole root method and once your phone is booted up with root and twrp you would extract the stock recovery and stock bootloader from the restore file. Then you would flash them via flashfire which I'm told can be done. I'm told that flashing the bootloader does wipe your device which would eliminate root since it's the systemless method. So in theory you'd be back to pure stock again. That's not what we want to have. So we would have to use an alternative root like phh's root method flashed instead of supersu from twrp during the initial root process here. My theory is that you would be restored to stock again but you would have root at least.
So you would at least be able to tinker just not flash stuff. But I believe you can flash a few things from flashfire and still have root for general tinkering or ad block etc.
Of course there is also the possibility that with the locked bootloader (stock) that your phone may not even boot due to new security features in 7.0
But like I said this is just a theory that may or may not work. I haven't had time to try it because I'm constantly busy working and testing themes but if I do ever get time I would consider trying it if we can confirm that we are able to 100% restore to stock. At least with that confirmation we know that if it doesn't work we can get back to how things were.
Hopefully that makes sense.

Well I knew you had worked on ds. I wasn't sure however if you had a 915 or not. So then at this point it seems that if that signal fix is in fact valid that it is the only method to get things operational and I would presume it's a stretch given the user who posted about it doesn't seem to have any credibility to go by.

Correct but it's useless to use since the phone doesn't function properly afterwards. If there was a confirmed way to have data and signal working then that would be great but there is nothing confirmed to work yet.
I've just moved to a V20 from a Note 4. All my Note4 ROMS were T-Mobile versions. I believe Rogers/Fido phones are basically the same as T-Mobile, which uses freq. channel 66 as well.
Has anyone tried a T-Mobile (918) ROM on the 915 yet? Might just work...

The 'Freedom' name becomes a bit ironic for the LG V20 H915 variant it seems. Not a lot of freedom when one can't unlock and root it. Just got one the other day as somehow my Note 4 stopped functioning as a phone, after a couple of months of fun running through loads of Lineage and other nightlies. Loved that phone, but I'll come to love the V20 I'm sure. Already like it a lot. But root seems essential. I haven't had an unrooted phone for more than a few hours in years. Adaway and just general user control of the file system seems essential. Getting rid of bloatware and such. I mean... I disabled a lot of that nonsense, but it's still there, existing in MY phone, which makes me mad. I want to dump a few custom notification sounds into root directories but can't. It's frustrating. So yeah, commenting to subscribe, and hoping a developer with a V20 in Canada decides to get excited enough to remedy the situation, whenever that becomes possible. Otherwise it seems I'll just have to get used to the odd ad and the other limitations.

Why Wouldent you just use the secret # in the hidden menu to change bands to get signial. Also you could try searching for exsisting bands that are near by, this dont require the hidden menu.

Not understanding what you are suggesting. I tried lots of hidden menu options to get the SIM recognized in the Note 4, but it appears the slot died on that phone. It just won't be a phone any more, no matter which ROM i flash.
If you mean the LG V20 I'm even more puzzled. How would changing hands help with rooting the phone?

Help with LG V20 US996 demo unit unlocking boot loader failed at LG developer website

Hi, i hope this is the right forum, i am a noobie at LG flashing, been reading some, but it is a little confusing (coming from Oneplus One), so i bought an LG V20 - US996, and i thought i could unlock the bootloader via LG Developers website, so i started the process, install drivers, follow the instructions, etc. then when i submitted IMEI and device id i got an error, message, stating :your device (TEST_GPIN) does not support unlocking bootloader", i emailed LG with the question but still no answer, so i did a little research and found out that my phone is a demo unit or something like it. on the inside sticker it says "not for sale" the model on the sticker is US996. i have attached some screens that show software versions etc.
so basically i would like to know if anyone knows if i am out of luck and cant unlock the bootloader to flash twrp and root, or if it can be done, and point me in the right direction, any help will be greatly appreciated.
i obviously would not want to brick my device, but am willing to try to unlock if possible.
thanks.
That's very interesting. Wondering if that's the model the debug bootloader was pulled from to root the US carrier v20's. I'm not an expert in this but have you tried to flash the us99610f (Dec 1 2016 sec patch) kdz using LG UP. That should put you on official LG firmware that is still rootable. The kdz will flash every piece of firmware getting you off of that demo firmware. From there you could try to unlock the bootloader again using LGs website, or worst case use dirtysanta to root the phone if you wish. There's a hacked lgup thread somewhere in the guide section that should do the trick.
thanks toastyp, i will download 10f, and look for the hacked lgup.

Glad everything worked for you. I would try to root using LGs official unlock.bin method as it will be the easiest way to root the phone. Plus you get to keep your stock bootloader which is potentially helpful in the event LG implements ARB on the us996. If it still doesn't work you can try the dirty elf thread. I believe it's the dirtysanta method for the us996. This process will flash a debug bootloader with full fastboot commands that is unlocked. From there you can flash twrp normally.

thanks toastyp, LG official unlock still not working, as i guess the IMEI is still recognized as from a demo unit, i will try dirty elf method, might take a while since my home pc just died (mobo or cpu) anyway , as soon as i can i will try it.
thanks.

LGUP dump take forever?

Hey everyone. I'm new to LG devices. Had Samsung notes for years. Just picked up a carrier unlocked ATT V35 ThinQ, and been trying to use the LGUP tool to dump all partitions before I try my hand at flashing a newer firmware.
But it seems to take forever. Like more than 10 hours on some partitions. I haven't been able to complete a dump yet.
Are my expectations too high? Am I using the wrong tool? How long should a dump of a stock install take?
I'm using LGUP 1.14, and following some online tutorials I found. Seems to be doing what it's supposed to, just super duper slow.
Any assistance is welcome. Thanks.
Forget about full dump - it is LAF restricted. For full dump you will need to unlock your bootloader, enable fastboot and flash engineering LAF afterwards.
Damn, really. No wonder.
Doesn't seemlike anyone's getting bootloaders unlocked, unless they send their v35 to China, from what I've read so far. I guess I'll keep checking the forums.
Thank you for your help though.
Well sending to China is still an option, but you can contact this guy and unlock your bootloader for about 5 minutes remotely.
