Can you load non-amazon content onto 2017 Fite HD8? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

They're dirt cheap today but if I can't put my own ripped films on then I'm not going to bother and will just get an Android tablet for a little more. I've seen there is currently no working root method.
Primarily will be for the kids for films so if I have to put up with a tablet on Marshmallow it's not the end of the world.
TIA

You can load anything with a USB connection to your computer. Whether or not you have an app that can access said content is a different story.
However, thanks to this thread, you can install Google Play on it https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603 make sure you head over there to thank the OP

I picked one up on the Prime sale - its a well built little tablet for the money. The Prime OS is pretty ugly, though. Left it stock for maybe an hour before I installed the Google store, LaunchHijack and Nova. I know the Prime stuff is still there, but hiding it under the launcher makes a world of diference.

Just to clarify, I think the app you are referring to is called:
LauncherHijackV2
and there is a 2.1V

Lost preloaded game

Hi all,
I had to petform a factory reset tonight of my tab but noticed Nova is missing. Is there any way to obtain this again as it was preloaded on the tab by Samsung?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Strange
I was concerned about this as I like the game however after a factory reset today it's still there.
Interesting. The US Tab only comes with a Asphalt5 HD trial. I have yet to purchase Nova due to it not being offered through the market. I'm kinda jealous of you guys.
I didn't get anything on my german tab

Ah yes, Asphalt5. Does the version you get with the US Tab work well? The version I get from the market leaves a white stripe along the top of the screen (maybe 1.5cm), with all the buttons shifted by a relative amount.
It runs nice and smoothly, and it's actually quite playable nonetheless, just that it's not using the top of the screen. I've tried both with and without the Spare Parts Fullscreen trick, and it makes no difference.
I'm using the german tab and had none of the games preinstalled. However, if you really want asphalt and nova running full screen, you could head over to the gamesloft website and purchase them there. The galaxy tab version is listed for both. You will get an sms from them with a download link after you've made your purchase. FYI, I have both games running beautifully on my tab.

I'm really not interested in the full version, but if someone could maybe put up the .apk for the trial version of Asphalt5 that comes with the US Tab, I'd appreciate that.

List of safe to remove bloatware

I was lucky enough to snag a TF101 on Black Friday. Stood in line for 3 hours with all the other nuts.
Anyway, I quickly rooted and flashed a new kernel to overclock. I'm loving this tablet so far. I haven't tried different roms yet, I'm aware of those which remove the bloatware Asus puts on. At the moment I'm still content with stock rooted. I want to remove the bloatware though. I searched but couldn't find a list of what's safe to remove and what's not. If someone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
Theres alot of the devs now removing all apks they can and putting them in a zip incase people want them maybe look at whats i them and you will know what is safe to remove
Or look at the dev threads they usually list what they have removed although some dont so have a proper look.

Not in Asus' version, but you also don't get updates in that. Just buy it on the market if you want it; it's cheap and you'll get proper updates, rather than having to wait months for bug fixes.
I removed all of the stuff asus loaded on it and the only problem I've had was trying to install an official build from Asus since the files were modified. Other than that, it runs just fine.

[VIDEO REVIEW] First Look at the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7" Tablet

In this video, I go over the camera, video playback, audio books, and a few other fun items.
Before you ask....
Yes, I loaded apk files on here that you would not normally be able to get from Amazon's Appstore. Most worked with no problems.
Nice review... the best that I have seen so far (inc the Verge etc)
Hey just wanted to say thanks for the review. I was on the fence about this and you sold me with the side loading ability. I loved the original Fire, and was looking forward to this. But after reading a few posts about it being locked, and now knowing if it will be rooted I was no longer sure about it. So side loading makes a huge difference.

Have you tried side loading the Play Store APK?[/QUOTE
The Play Store requires files to be manually placed into the /system/app folder and the permissions to be changed. That requires root. All of the other apps were either grabbed from my Nexus 7, or found elsewhere. I downloaded ES File Explorer from the Amazon Appstore, and used it to install the apks.
No PAID apps were harmed in the making of this video.

Thanks for the great review !
The two apps I'm most interested in getting to work on a Kindle Fire HD are Google Maps and Google Now. I know there's no gps but I assume there is some kind of wifi based location ability ? Or just tell Google Maps where I am.
I figure maps shouldn't be too hard, what do you think ? I guess Google Now might require rooting though, is that the case ?
The device itself is pretty sick. But it's still stuck in Amazon's crappy software. It's like putting rims and ground effects on a Pinto; either way, it's still a Pinto.
Thanks for the review - I would like to see how the ComiXology app works but the fact that sideloading works takes a great load off my mind.
I'm definitely going to save up for the 8.9".

No one seems to want to keep the stock launcher i dont think its bad im still hopeing someone will mod it to fix the thing that are a little annoy ing.

Amazon is bound to get it right with someone.
But most people that post on here are looking for a major change.
You are on a development site we represent probably less than 1/10th of 1% of kindle users
The 'extended settings' app in this thread has some stock launcher mod settings.

I'm still running the stock launcher. Like wouldn't describe my relationship to it, but I haven't been terribly motivated once I got root with play and gapps working.

xiro49,
This is a very personal question which you will get a thousand or more different answers. I think the best question to ask you is: What do you find annoying with the Kindle? When you replay to this question, I will expand on how to improve what you do not like with the Kindle.
I really think the Kindle is a solid piece of hardware, I do not like the interface but I do love many other aspects of the Kindle like the sound and video, they are both top notch on the Kindle.
My main motivation for rooting was access to Google Play, as I wasn't happy with Amazon's limited selection of apps and having to re-purchase apps. So I guess that puts me in the minority of people who aren't looking for major changes.

I prefer the Amazon launcher. When I had the original KF, I did not run the other ports because I think that Google fails at the tablet concept with their launcher. It's ok for a phone but Amazon has a better idea on how to access my stuff. I just wish they had a recent apps button. That would make it much better.

I actually use the stock launcher ---most of the time. It is not bad in what it does. It provides immediate visibility to the most recent things you used or did and lets you get at them very quickly. That is very good if you are like me and use the KFTT again and again for the mostly the same things. What don't you like about it?
For me, I didn't like not having access to the Android Apps I bought on the play store and which I use all the time on my phone. So I rooted my Kindle Fire and added the Play store and now have exactly the Google apps that I want intermingled with the amazon apps that I also use.
Every now and then I do come out of the Amazon Launcher, and use another launcher (ADW, but I have tried Lightning Launcher and Nova launcher) just to see if they would improve my ability to get at what I want to do, or do it faster. Over all there seems no advantage.
So. . . The Amazon Launcher is ok, but I think opening up the Kindle Fire HD to more apps --like those found in the Play store or the 1Mobile Market can enrich the use of the machine. Also adding back flash using the way prokennexusa has recommended in his threads really improved my KF user experience.
But my experience and opinions are based on the fact that I use Amazon Prime a lot --many magazines, some newspapers and many books. Plus the occasional free or paid movie when I need to escape the real world I used to use an Ipad2, but it was too big, too many hard edges and my wife was always taking it with her. . so I am much happier with this -size, content and even how it provides the content is really just what I need!

Very Impressed with the Amazon Fire TV (From a Canadian)

I can't overstate how impressed with this little box I am. I picked one up last month on a trip to the US (I'm from Canada) and thought I would play around with it and see how it would work in Canada. With Unblock US and an Amazon account with prime I have been able to access all my prime amazon content on it. As well as US Netflix, Hulu, ETC.
XBMC is very easily sideloaded onto it as well, with or without being rooted which opens up a whole new world of content and goodies.
And once rooted you can do even more cool stuff. I followed guides to add the google app store, remove unwanted menu options, change the launchers, add game controllers, move apps to external drive, and much more. I just installed Google Play Music and now I have complete access to my google music account on the FireTV which is very cool. I'm sure there are tons of awesome apps that work on the FTV. Another favorite is Droidmote Server so I don't keep having to unplug my external drive to use a mouse or keyboard (which many google apps need)
I sold my 2 Apple TV 2's for a very nice profit and I'm going all Fire TV. The only advantage I think to the Apple TV's is if you have itunes and are invested in the Apple Ecosystem which I was not. The menus and everything are much speedier and my ATV2's were prone to random crashes while in XBMC which drove me crazy.
I'm really looking forward to playing around more with this unit and seeing what all the development community can do with it. I think its already awesome and it has a ton of more potential.
question for you
I am in Canada also and use unblock us. Have you tried using the A&E, Lifetime or History Channel apps? For whatever reason they wont work and I am wondering if somehow they realize that you are not in the US. I have no problem with any other apps. Trying to figure out if its a Canada issue or maybe an issue with the app's of fire tv.

You don't need a us credit card address for unblock us, it's a Canadian service from a Canadian company. You need a US credit card for the amazon service.

Those particular apps aren't working for me either. They just crash back to the home screen. I think its a Canada thing as unblock.us does not officially support Fire TV yet. If you get yours working let me know and I'll do the same.
