Hey people, i was wondering since HTC are going to update the HTC Desire with 720p recording in the future via an update. HTC HD2 has the same camera why cant we have an update????
and by the way dont start using because windows mobile 6.5 doesnt allow it blah blah blah......

its hard the hardware its capable of doing it software might not be. Windows Mobile its old and a bit dusty. Im pretty sure theirs a way but HTC dont care the HD2 its like the last strong windows Mobile device standing. HTC are putting their effort to android and windows 7.

It might be plausible to enable the HD recording in the future, but I know WinMo is incapable of supporting HD recording. You'll never know, maybe something miraculous will happen and this might work!
However, at least it's nice to get pics at higher resolutions than 5mp. There's a tweak here, if you didn't know.

Yeah, and I'm thinking Microsoft might work on fixing that in WP7 and completely ignore WM6.5.x.
Hopefully the devs get that to work. The TP2's Android port still doesn't have camera support and the port's been around since December.
Lets ask another question has anybody here been able to prove that our beloved HD2 supports 720p recording hardware-wise? And if yes its just a software/driver issue thats keeping us from recording at 720p?

Can you confirm to use that the camera in the Nexus One and HD2 are identical?
im pretty sure its 720p recording will be possible in thw android port, but because WM6.5 is well old and sucky (or ancient if you dont like to call it sucky)... it wont be possible in it, but hopefully it will be possible in WP7... and i belive android devs said it will be possible in android but thats when its fully ported of course...

well, ive tried lol but not successful, camera shuts down everytime i try it, but i can record on WVGA(800x480) plus a bit smoother frame rate than normal HD2
See i'm kinda holding back from buying one of those mini HD camcorders because im certain someone can create a break through with the HD2's camera. saves me taking two devices everywhere just for the camera, when the HD2's camera seems more than capable.
I've not been on the forum long so can someone explain the process that could make this work? Im aware of the WM 6.5 limitations, has anybody got a solid port to android or WM7 yet...?

How are you recording in WVGA? I know the Android Camcorder app does but I have never heard of the WinMo recorder going beyond VGA
I don't see how the OS has anything to do with the resolution that the camera can capture at. The limitation is probably in the firmware (in the camera module), camera module driver, or the camera software. Could also be a hardware issue with whatever bus interface is between the camera module and the HD2, it could be a standard USB bus which would have the bandwidth for HD video, or it could be something proprietary with a low bitrate that wouldn't handle the bandwidth of a 720p/24/30 real time video stream. The bus could be a real issue, notice how some of the 1st camera phones that could do 720p were 720p/24. 720p/24 is a lower bitrate than the 720p/30 more common now
I do know that I have gotten my HD2 to capture WVGA video in one of the android builds. I never took the time to evaluate if it was capturing a true pixel per pixel WVGA image, or if it was really capturing a VGA image and then either zooming or stretching it to WVGA in software

I'd like to know as well. I'm more interested in doing widescreen video recording natively. When I run android it does it. How can we do this on the WinMo side? It's not HD just widescreen...

Its quite possible that android is still recording VGA mode and then just cropping off the top and bottom, basically leaving you with 640x360 effective pixels.
We need someone that knows the android cam software that can tell us exactly what its doing, or someone to do a resolution test recording a pattern to measure the recorded resolution
well... actually You are wrong. some android builds ARE capable of recording 800 x 480 videos. what more, those are being recorded flawlessly, no frame drops or stuttering.
I believe that I have recorded those with mattc rom.

but is it really true 800x480 pixels or the 640x360 upscaled to fill out 800x480? only true way to test is to use a resolution pattern

I am pretty sure that the HD2 has a 4:3 not a 16:9 sensor for the camera. this would explain why we loose resolution when the still camera is put into wide mode. it takes the 4:3 5mpixel image and chops the top and bottom off to make it "widescreen"

hey guys so after looking into this a little bit more i have found a few odd solutions but a resurfacing of one of the hd2's faults. i have been able to play high res .mp4 movies in the htc video player no problem. it was designed to fit the series of images best to the screen it is given(just to point out the obvious). now due to the fixed screen res on the device, the MOST your going to get out of any video that you watch is 480x800. the program is just running a data summary per pixel when dealing with a pixle count higher than 480. its the same (or similar) process as to when you you choose full screen or wide screen on the device to play movies. you are not getting true pixel to pixel data play back (unless you record with the phone camera at 480p or convert a movie to EXACTLY 480x whatever. which btw does not matter.) with that being said, the htc video play supports a vast amount of resolutions including 720p .mp4. (you guys have made a mountain out of an ant hill) yes i do understand different res vids also have various bit rate and playback qualities, but the best thing to do for that is download chainfires 3d drivers and manually clock your processor to 998Mhz. rendering becomes seamless at that point. so to end one vicious cycle, yes, you can play 720p videos on your hd2 just make sure its the propper file type. now back to the other issue... 720p RECORDING. absolutely the phone can handle it! its a matter of opening an additional camera function to the htc camera. easier said than done. the general idea is changing a value within either the firmware or through the registry for you input image pixle count. for ex:

I've just videoe my TV screen (with ceiling light above me too)
The stock camera app recording was fuzzy around the edge (grainy) and the TV picture wasn't that clear at all (was half zoomed in)
So then I used the LG camera app. Turned FPS to 60 and rate to 10mbit... EPIC!
Yes it uses more space, but the quality is amazing!
Anybody wanting to test video capability, download LG camera app, set FPS to 60 and check it out! (it doesn't look,great until you start recording)
Am just uploading a sample,video which is on highest settings in LG camera app. It's a whopping 250mb for just under a minute!!

yeah i just checked and installed it, its the middle of the night here so il test properly tomorrow, i remember using this app a long time ago when i had my htc sensation.

what video settings did you use, what bitrate did you use. the samples good for the condition, i think we need to test this in normal daylight to see what it can really do. I took a video 32 seconds and it was 80mb

That is something else, fps means frames per second and i have just checked on my pc and the videos max out at 30.1fps.
Well in this case Hz and fps actually are the same, as long as we are talking about the captured framerate and not the outputted one, which can very well differ.
Still you're right! MX Player is detecting bull****, Media Info on my PC does show 29,716 fps.
Would have liked it to by different though, 60fps would have been great for some slowmo action

nah im sorry Hz and fps are 2 completly different things.

MX player indicated correctly, it just didnt show you fps
Hz describes a frequency and just means "per second" and normally when I use it to describe framerates people do understand what I mean, even if fps is the better word
If you take a look at my earlier Screenshot you will see that MX Player never claimed it to be Hz, it just says "Bildfrequenz", which means framerate, and does not use any unit.

EDIT: also took some pictures but the quality of them does not seem to be improved.
Well either way, whether it improves FPS or not (which I didn't check it.actually did), it does improve the video massively. That video was captured using the highest bitrate, which is what defines the quality of the video
video. You don't have to use maximum setting all the time, but it truly is much better than the stock app.
Will there be a way to possibly modify this to enable in the future? Or 3rd party camera app? I think it's a nice looking video mode and not sure what's the big deal for leaving it out if they did.

Use an app if it didn't. You can get much better control over pics and video.
Google camera is pretty basic really, not exactly something for enthusiasts.

Apparently the 6P is capable and has the programming to do so.
Good deal, Google FINALLY added this.
For example, the N6, the hardware is fully capable, but no 3rd party (or stock) allow it to work since the .so camera files don't have a profile for 1080p60 - so even IF a camera app had the ability, the hardware doesn't have to coding to use it.
The N6 is my case in point. It can and does shoot 2160p at 30fps but CAN NOT shoot 1080p at anything higher than 30fps. Stupid, yes, absolutely. The hardware is MORE than capable, but the coding isn't there to support it.

sorry for being blonde but what video was that - and how do you know it plays in HDR??
for EG: on my sony TV when i play HDR videos (on netflix or amazon) the screen changes completely - the colours are warmer and the luminosity drops a lot) then when i exit the videos the screen reverts back to normal settings
is this the same case with the s8 HDR? or else how do you know you're watching HDR (for EG you know what resolution you are watching)
Im told the youtube app doesnt yet support HDR.
Have you enabled the "Video Enhancer" setting in Settings>Advanced Features>Video Enhancer? When I enabled this I noticed YouTube is brighter and more vivid... Doesn't for sure say this is HDR but it does look like it.
Netflix and Amazon are working on mobile support. There is currently no HDR streaming for our S8. Don't turn on the video enhancer, it just makes the video brighter and overly saturated, nothing to do with HDR.
You can always download the Samsung Video player from Play store and download some HDR samples to watch. I have experimented and HDR and other high quality videos only seem to play flawlessly on Samsung's own video player. It plays 4k at 60fps files with ease and HDR too.
Here is a good place to get reference quality samples. Streaming can't match them for IQ.

I would like to know this too. I've downloaded multiple HDR videos from the site including the HDR and SDR versions of Camp and they all seem to have dull colours. Using a Galaxy Tab S3 btw, but still using the native video player. Tried using MX Player as well but same story.
There are some 4k HDR 60fps videos on Youtube, and while it might not be displaying in HDR, cranking the resolution to 1440p and brightness all the way up the videos do look purdy!

Guys it would be worth mentioning which continent and country you're from when referring to streaming services.
For instance, HDR on Netflix is not yet available in Europe (UK) even if I update the apk to version 5.0.1 manually. And I do have the Ultra HD plan to go with this.

Can confirm this also no HDR content in the UK either yet.
The samsung video app seems to not like all hdr video. It will tell you when it is in hdr though.
The Samsung video app doesn't play hdr for me.

Dear community,
our HTC U Ultra cannot record 1080p with 60fps by default. However, the snapdragon 821 is capable of recording fullhd with this framerate as other phones with this cpu proof.
Is there there any way or app to enable fullhd with 60fps?
I have tried several apps like Filmic Pro, Open Camera and cinema fv-5 already and none of these apps allow to enable 60 fps.
Is there another way?

The google camera ports support it!
Keep in mind that you need more light. So don't expect good results in low light situations.

For videos the viewfinder works also very smooth. For pictures the viewfinder is laggy, as mentioned in the linked thread.
Video files are always safed to the internal storage but as the ulra has at least 64gb of internal storage the videos can be manually copied to the sdcard from time to time.
btw: I am aslo still on android 7.0 at the moment with a european device.

did u put it on your computer to check if the phone is taking 60 fps video or not ? because when i try to use the google camera app and chose 60 fps option when i put the video on my computer it tells me this is 30 fps footage even when i upload it to you tube its just 1080p 30 i tried 720p @ 60 but still same issue so pease check for ur self and tell me what did youl find

I'm only getting 30fps 1080p, I tried the google app.

well this sucks cuz this phones hardware is totally capable of 1080p 60 fps but for some ****ing reason HTC doesnt allow us !:crying:
alright so i have tried the google camera app and yes it record 1080p 30 fps even when i choose 60 fps but i did notice something really weird. when choose 60 fps the video size is always and i mean always way bigger than when i choose 30 fps i dont really know why this is the case and am really confused because i come out with 2 identical videos with the same frame rate at the same resolution and when is about more than 60% larger than the other! so i dont know howto explain that
one more thing is that it might actually be a hardware problem maybe the sensor isnt capable of 1080p 60 am just assuming as i dont really know any way if any of you guys found any thing that could help us out with this problem please let us know

Yes. Try Snap Camera for example.
