Should i go for the OnePlus 3T instead of the OnePlus 5? - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

I am on the zenfone 2 right now, so this would be a big upgrade for me.
I am not the person who buys phones every year, so given the issues people are reporting for the OP5,
should i go for the OP 3T. My friend uses it, and has had no issues uptil now.
3T might be a bit behind the OP5, but still is a great phone. What should i go for?

I still recommend to buy the OP5. Yes, it has issues (BTW i just got a little jelly effect (which could be fixed later), i had no WiFi/Bluetooth issue), but still, i'd get one if i were you.

Tbh, just get OP 3T. You'll save money. I had the 3T and I'm on the 5 now, felt like the same phone minus the obvious thinner feel in the hand. Anybody who's already on 3T, don't waste. It's not worth it and the 3T has OIS.

I believe you're posting in the wrong section my friend. We're glad you're in the forums, just the wrong one
I posted a couple images taken with my OP5 to help you choose which phone you'd like, if you do choose "dual cameras, clearer photos" pm me for savings

So the 821 and 835 isnt much of a difference here. Im really confused.
Some ppl say 3T has heating issues and OP5 doesnt. Is that true.

I never had any heating issue on my OP3T tho (You can check on their XDA forum). I know on Antutu you see the number difference but tbh, real life usage, you can't really tell the difference. It's too little . The dual camera is good but not great, same goes to OP3T. It's up to you, really. If you have the extra cash to burn, get the OP5 but if you're being frugal, go for OP3T. In my opinion, I kinda regret getting the OP5. Not because it's a bad phone but because I already had the OP3T and I don't see much difference in daily performance.

Any pics in low light?

If you don't upgrade often get the OP5. Similar price (at least where I am) and more future proofed

I am going with the OP5, coz i thought i don't upgrade phones often, so why not invest in what is the latest and best out there.
hoping the jelly effect doesnt hit me.

Good choice you will love it it's so god dam fast ,!! And will only get better with time ?

I had both. I'd go with the 3T. The jelly effect hurts my eyes and the 3T has ois. Plus you can get the 3T much cheaper now used and save a couple of hundred dollars.

Good choice. Changed from OPO to OP5 and I'm in love with the OP5.
Sure, people coming from Op3 will say there's not a big difference. That's true because Hardware development isn't that fast so you will have a completely different phone when you change from Op3 to OP5.
But if you are coming from another brand I would recommend the OP5 for sure. It has a slightly higher price but it's more future prove. The dual cameras are great and they will get better with software updates. If you want breathtaking pictures get a DSLR instead of blaming a MOBILE CAMERA (like a few people do).
Pixel phone's camera is slightly better but the price isn't just "slightly" higher
I don't have any Jelly Effect, no WiFi issues or anything. Phone is running flawless and very, very fast.
If you won't get a phone with jelly effect you will love the OP5 for sure.

Still a good phone. Lucky for me, My unit has no jelly effect. I think because of that fact, those with Jelly effect is probably a hardware issue. All the displays are the same so It doesn't make sense that some experience it and some don't. See if you can test your unit 1st if you're buying it from a walk-in shop, if online, make use of the 15 days return policy and have it replaced if you do end up with the jelly unit

Its arriving tomorrow, jelly effect is the first thing i will look for, wonder they would replace it or not.
Replace is via amazon here in india, Oneplus doesnt do it officially here.

I came to OP5 from Nexus 4, I just love this phone!! The camera is great for a cell phone camera, I am still getting used to it to get better photos.
The jelly I think is not a big deal, not for me at least... I noticed it a little only after reading about it a lot
I bought it for the same reason as you, I don't upgrade often. And I want a phone that is supported by community on XDA, which I think this will surely be
SO if you don't upgrade often like me, you will love this phone...
P.S. just forget that you read about the jelly if you can since OP has officially said its normal, it will be difficult to get replacement for that issue via Amazon...

Need help choosing between OP5 and LG G6

Hey thanks for helping out.
Okay, let's break things down. Consider I can get either of these phones for the same price. Now, go through my impressions on both the phones and help me decide.
So, these are reasons to go for,
G6 over OP5
- The design
- "I" think the G6 camera got an edge over OP5
- It's compact yet has a bigger screen
- Water resistance (not really a deal breaker for me though)
- OIS
- Design again (It's essentially just the design and alot the design)
OP5 over G6
- I love Oxygen OS just because it's closer to stock android (G6 doesn't even come close in this department)
- Much cleaner with nearly no bloatware
- More RAM and better processor means smoother and faster experience
- I think I would find myself using the portrait mode more often than a wide angle shot
- Dash charging (of course)
- Alert slider
- Faster read and writes
- Prefer AMOLED over LCD
And there are things like SOT, sound quality/volume and other little things that would make one of them top the other. Hope someone can give some valuable comments on this. Thanks again
PS: I know the later list is longer, but it's just not that easy for me Also you may know other things that would make either of my lists grow.
also a LED notification for the OP5, the G6 doesn`t have one, that was the one thing that bugged me about the G6, so I ended up getting rid of it, I would go OP5, but I will have my OP5 tomorrow...... so I will see if my mind changes on that lol
For me The OP5 is better

The design of the oneplus5 is good bro , i know it's like a year old desing and everybody been pissing on it , but be sure to know that if it wasn't close in apparence to the Iphone 7 , nobody will point it out as a "bad" design ... once you take that idea out of your brain , the design is really good , also don't judge it like you see it because unless u held it you know nothing about it ... like MKBHD said : the most important is how it feels .
The camera on it is also great , i couldn't rely on the reviews on youtube , just because some people showed it better than the biggest phones , while others showed it like trash ... so for this i'll say it's up to you , it's definitely a user preferance thing , but note that hopefully it will get better with software updates and also that the phone is less than a week old
compact , bigger screen , water resistance ... are things that - again - come to your preferance , some of us would've wanted an infinity display on it , even the company said it themselves ... if it's a deal breaker for you than definitely consider them
as for OIS , it's something shamefull , like how could a company promote a phone and make it's selling point on the camera and not include OIS ?! i don't know , but something to point out , is that of there were EIS with 4K vids , or if EIS was more enhanced ... the lack of OIS will be no problem , even though
OIS >>> EIS ... but still an enhanced EIS will do the job , and hopefully OP will be on it with software updated to put EIS for 4K videos and make it over all better
hope i helped you with is , presonnally just for stock-ish android experience , and support of the dev community and root and all that ... i will choose a OnePlus phone over anything else ... the GPixel is great , but very expensive nd lacks some very cool stuff that the OP5 has ... and after all , it is your call , for me ... i would rock that OP5 .
G6 only has snapdragon 821 whereas OnePlus has 835. That's another big item I think.
Some for hijacking the topic but I too am considering buying OP5 but am confused which version should I get, the 6GB one or the 8GB one. Storage is not an issue as 64 GB will be four times more than what I need, lol. But just curious if that 2 GB will make any difference in performance? If not now, will it make difference in the next say 6-12 months, as I am considering to buy this one for at least 2 years.
Thanks
G6 better build quality, display, camera. The only downside to it is its an S821 but the S821 is a great SOC.

6GB will last you for some years to come. As of now, there is no real usage for 8GB of RAM; the software isn't properly optimized (yet). With some time and custom ROMs this will probably change though. But still, considering most major flagships (S8, Pixel, G6) only have 4GB, the 6GB version should be more than enough. I was considering the 8GB version only because of how storage consumption is currently growing pretty fast, so I was concerned I might run out of storage when I manage to keep my phone more than 3 years. Also I like the matte black version more.
At the end, I still opted for the 6GB/64GB/Slate Grey version though. Arrives tomorrow

For the casual user you probably won't notice a difference. 6GB is still well beyond what you'd get from pretty much any other manufacturer. If you are a super heavy multitasker, that is probably where you might see a difference.
That said, I got the 8GB one, but it's probably overkill even for me. One of the biggest surprises using this phone is that even large games stay open, suspended in the background practically forever. No more random Pokémon Go Plus disconnects!
Software is key for me. I sold my S8 because as much as loved the hardware, the op5 blows it out of the water in performance. Lgs software imo is even worse than Samsung as it's just all over the place.
Personally I wouldn't pay anything over $300 for a phone with last year's SOC. While it still works perfectly fine, that's akin to paying 2017 prices for a 2016 car.
Basically (to me) the raw speed and clean software on the op5 puts it over anything save for the pixel, which would be a closer call if the pixel could be had for less than the op5 price.

Agreed. I'm currently using the Pixel XL. And it's blazing fast and super smooth(Except some rare frame drops I encounter in the Android O beta). It's sad that I gotta let go of my Pixel. (Reasons I'm letting it go: It's been purchased from US and it doesn't support some bandwidths I need here in India. Also ROM is only 32, no dual sim and occasional microphone issues)
There no other, absolutely no other complaints I have with my Pixel. (Except for a stereo speaker I'd still want that)

I don't have any problem with the build quality of my O+5... It's nice, slim, thin, feels solid, ... great phone. Build quality? 100% good. :good:
OnePlus 5 all the way. The G6 is pretty much dead in the water. LG should have waited for SD 835 imo.

It's the bezels..man.. The phone really doesn't look like all that 2017. I would not have a second thought had the OP5 a bit slimmer bezels. At least like the G6 if not like S8
Believe me i faced the same dilemma.
There's no hitch in my mind after choosing the OP5.
Personally, it is a preference as to what you want in your phone.
Go over the pros and cons for both.
Check camera quality samples.
See comparison videos.
Etc.
Then make an informed decision bro.
On a Side Note:
These days the cameras on most mobiles are so good, it's very hard to make out whats good n what's not, in a manner of speaking...
The OP5 is missing a sd card slot. Thats a big drawback for me

I don't think I'd run out of memory with 128GB version (maybe 64GB too) really. Considering I also got a laptop if I needed a backup. I'm having a tough time with the 32GB on my Pixel XL though. There's only so much you can do even with a laptop to backup.
It's good only.
I have not tested it fully but I like it.
I switched from a Nexus 6P.. & still like the OP5 camera
It's still on personal preference..
Do check MKBHD's review on it.
Even SuperSaf camera comparisons..
You'll get the idea

Overpriced and design is horrible. Bezels killed the phone. Got the op5. Performance on par. Do t care about camera. As far as looks and feels. Op5 hands down better. Pixel was $1000 plus for.me on launch. Op5 $500 and change and couldn't be happier.
I'm still on the fence whether to stick with Pixel XL or OP5. Camera is a big deal for me. I have kids and take lots of pictures.

OIS wont help you with with moving targets, but improved EIS from patch to patch might.
I'm satisfied. Love it
I'm in love with this phone. I have the 8Gb version and it's so damn snappy. I'm new to oxygen os, but love all the features available, even without root (although I'm rooted). My favorite thing about the phone is how easy it was to root and of course the awesome battery life. First phone ever that I've not had to charge every day.
Very nice
I'm quite satisfied. I keep trying to find the stuff that seems to drive a lot of you crazy but I can't replicate it with my own device. Came from a OnePlus 3 which I almost regretted handing down as I really came to like it.
If I can get the hang of this camera pro mode thing I think I'll be satisfied for the rest of the year.

If you slap the same software on them (say LineageOS) as to eliminate any results manipulation due to software optimization, the OnePlus 5 should be faster and smoother due to the better specs.
All in all, I believe it's a great phone. But I don't have it yet, so I'm speaking just from research.
If you want the latest specs at a good price and great development support, the OnePlus 5 may be the best choice.
Don't care about OIS or EIS, nor about waterproofing (OnePlus did say it is somewhat water proof) since I'm not planning on bathing with the phone.
It all comes down what you're looking in a phone.
Coming from a Nexus 6, it's definitely an upgrade. Overall very satisfied.
The only things I'm disappointed about are the lack of wireless charging and the speaker placement. I've been spoiled by the N6's dual front speakers. Now I have to use headphones while playing rhythm games because otherwise my hand keeps blocking the speaker.

Anyone moved from oneplus 5 your thoughts please.

So I tried the oneplus 5 yesterday and low and behold the jello effect drove me totally nuts. I just couldn't live with it and had to take it back. Just wanted to findout from those who have come from or are considering going to oneplus 5, what are your thoughts around the htc u11. The reason I ask is that it seems the oneplus 5 is currently the best in terms of performance one you take away the jello effect. So your thoughts will be appreciated.
I'm actually very curious on this too. As I'm getting bored with my V20 and I'm debating between the Oneplus and U11. If anyone has it on T-Mobile I'm curious on its performance with them too.

Didn't own OP5, but have U11 which is absolutely wonderful device - you got nothing to worry about performance wise, and in some cases will outperform :good:
I came from an OP5 and to me the devices felt like a night and day difference. The U11 has a much more premium build and feel compared to the OP5 and is far superior in terms of camera, water/dust resistance, hi-fi audio, expandable storage and excellent Sense development (Viper, Leedroid, etc.). In my case it felt very much like a "you get what you pay for" situation. If you're willing to shell out a few more bucks the U11 is all around a better device.
I spent only a few days w/ the OP5 before returning it. I had a weird Wifi hotspot issue w/ it that I couldn't keep it. For the short time I had it, I like the build. But I was not impressed w/ the camera nor the battery life. U11 camera is very good, and the squeeze feature is NOT a gimmick to me, it's the quickest way to launch camera.
Thanks for the input, folks. I was briefly thinking about the OP5 just because of the lower price (money is tight at the moment) but I have a 128GB version on pre-order (money's tight, but it's worth $80 for the uptick in RAM and storage). I'm 99% sure I'm making the right choice, but it's good to get confirmation.
Best phone that I have ever had. Squeeze feature is a game changer (truly...). Smooth, stutter-free scrolling everywhere you look.

You won't regret it. I've had mine since the 8th of June and I can say without a doubt it's the best device I've ever had the pleasure of owning and I've owned plenty (just look at my signature :laugh. The only thing that has me irked about it is HTC pulled S-OFF. It reverts to S-ON when it reboots which is going to be problematic when it comes to getting it out to end users and it also means that once you unlock the bootloader, you cannot restore it to factory "locked" - you will have to deal with the relocked tag and the voided warranty.

I actually tried 2 oneplus 5 phones and they tried to convince me that the jello effect wasn't there, and quite frankly for me that was it. They literally tried to convince me that something which was clearly a hardware issue was a feature!. I opened a thread on the oneplus net about it and it vanished because they can't stand the truth. The only thing the phone had was speed , but obviously they had to cut corners to enable that. I think when they do realise that people want quality not just 8gig of ram then I will go back to them.
I've got a Oneplus5 and a U11. Frankly, i used the Oneplus5 for about 2 weeks and then 4.5.5 came out and screwed Android Auto in the wife's car. It works in mine but not in hers. She was going to use the Oneplus5 to ease back into Android after 4 years of iOS and now the Oneplus5 sits powered off until I get the time to figure out why AA doesn't work in her car but does in mine. It's utterly frustrating.
As far as the U11 .. it works flawlessly with anything I throw at it. It's fast, gets great compliments on it's appearance and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it at all. Almost wish I'd bought 2 so the wife could use one. hmm. Live and learn I guess.
I have U11 on the way, but after using op3t I'll surely miss the alert slider.
But op5 has jello and no OIS and that just doesn't cut it.

But op5 has jello and no OIS and that just doesn't cut it.

I use Audio Profiles for this and have for quite a few of my Android phones. It works well and has quite a few options. It works well on the U11. It's not a hardware slider but we can't have everything.

Upgrade to OP 5t

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about upgrading from my OP 5 to the 5t.
Do you think that it's worth it?
After all, the price didn't change at all for the two versions.
I'd not pay much that much on top when selling my current OP5.
Wait for 6.
They've already confirmed the 6 is coming at Quote, "Near the end of quarter two."
I'm personally going to be sticking with the 5 myself unless the 6 has something that blows everyone's socks and hats and pants off. I love OnePlus a lot but these incremental upgrades need to stop. They need to add MORE. Put more battery in, lower the price add RAM better camera, SOMETHING. The 5t is my least favorite oneplus phone because they changed the screen and moved the fingerprint back. Big deal. The oneplus 5 lasts longer in terms of battery now but thats expected, the screen on the 5t takes up more space on the same body.
Its not an upgrade to me, its more of a preferential thing. I love bezels, they add places to grip the phone. Bezelless is not good for someone like me with shaky hands. That's just my opinion. But the fact is, it would be nice to see better improvements on newer models. Especially so the reputation of the "T" reigns strong.
I'd wait for the 6T. Even though they said there probably won't be a 6T.
But that's what they said about the 3T - a one-time thing only. And here we are, talking about a 5T...
I want 5T for the design. I really like the screen with small edges up & down.

Avoid like the plague, you'd be spending another £500 on smaller bezels ? Why would anyone want to do that. Not only that but you will probably have worse battery life due to the larger and higher resolution screen..
For me it's a no brainer to stick with the 5.
After what they did with the 5T (5 month upgraded model and made the 5 obsolete ) the 6 has to be unbelievable for me to commit to buying it.
Personally I can't see it, so it's back to HTC for me.

Forget it. I don't plan on doing it anymore anyway ^^
The OP5 is perfectly fine.

I'd probably even wait for the 7T.
Not because of the cost.
I wanted the 5T but had to admit to myself that it doesn't make sense buying a new phone when mine is perfectly fine.
I'm sticking with my OP5.

Regrets? Overrated?

So, i'm a noob to 1+ devices having got my 6T last November and it being my first 1+ device ever. Overall, I really like the device and it's definitely one of the best I've owned. I just don't feel it has lived up to all the hype. I have two lines and still use my Pixel 2XL and lately I'm finding myself liking my P2XL more than my 6T. Believe it or not I feel like my P2XL is faster and more fluid. Anyone else feel similar? I'm not trying to bash the 6T I'm just curious if anyone else feels like me.
Make sure you're on the latest firmware (9.0.11). The 6T OWNS the Pixel 3, let alone the 2, in just about every area except the camera, which gets better with every update. Give it a real chance, you wont be disappointed.
No regrets here. Absolutely love the 6T. My favorite device I've owned and I've owned plenty.
A little regret because I can benefit from its top specs at all. It doesn't support volte or vowifi in Canada.

I am kind of in similar situation.. I have Pixel 2 XL and bought OnePlus 6T.. Though 6T is faster, I feel my 2 XL is smoother and has better experience overall.. and man 6T kills my apps even after disabling all battery optimizations... I even miss voice calls and WhatsApp calls sometimes... Thinking of returning 6T
I had a P2XL previously and moved to a 6T in November. Unless things have improved lately, I found the 6T to be smoother for me. As stated by others, the only area I think the P2XL was better was in the camera, though I have been quite impressed by the pictures taken on the 6T for its price, especially with recent updates. I know we have the GCam port, but think it's still quite buggy. I would be very happy if somehow the HDR+ algorithm was integrated into the stock camera, though highly unlikely. No regrets here.
The obly regret is camera and camera app. The xamera app is so bad, no video recording options
Overrated imo, Price is too high now for what we get their is better value to be had elsewhere, Mi Mix 3 for example in UK it's the same price, Better Camera sensors/software, Better Display and wireless charging etc. OP3 was awesome for it's low price but OP6T doesn't live up to that, OnePlus hype is over for me probably my last OnePlus device.

Well said. The development for Xiaomi devices has been very good, I think that is what I will try next.
No regrets here either, have owned a lot of phones in the past and this one of the best if not the best. Miss wireless charging but the beast battery last forever.
Only had the 6T for a little over a month. Had the OnePlus one, but did not like it. Too many glitches.
They've improved a bunch. For the price, in my opinion, good bang for the buck!
I've owned a LOT of phones over the years. OP6T ranks right up there as far as I'm concerned.
Regrets? Most phones with this hardware are around 1000 euro. Almost every phone factory gets very greedy.
Well the fact that I got this phone for $280 bucks by trading in my s7 edge, I would say is the best deal for any phone I've ever had except for the HTC amaze which I got for free from staples 5 years ago. I would not have paid 580 as I have a brand new note 8 so it was just a back up. It's my 1st and I think it's nice, better then most at this price point.

Don't forget OnePlus is a budget phone with flagship SoC, Storage/RAM only rest of the phone is just cut corners to keep the cost low.
Do you tend to own phones for more than two years? If not, you'll see the overall value and abilities OnePlus devices tend to offer over other devices in the fragmentation department. My OnePlus 3 was still going very strong and I only updated because I was a sucker for the 6T. But truthfully, I never had an issue with my 3 slowing down or developing faults. I can't say the same for any LG, Samsung, or Motorola devices I've owned. OnePlus failure rates are some of the lowest in the industry, and it's evident as to why if you see videos of their manufacturing process on YouTube (Linus Tech Tips and Unbox Therapy I believe).
Sure, other devices may have explosive features that OnePlus may not always include. But at what cost? For the price, stability, support and power that you get with a OnePlus is unmatched. The 3 is STILL getting updates and works great. But if you're someone who updates regularly, I can see why maybe you'd feel like you're missing out.

You know, I thought the same thing but if you take the time to figure out the software its really not that bad at all. Coming from a Pixel 2 XL, I am content with these photos but it seriously took me some time to get used to the camera. Work on your focus, leave HDR on auto; you will be good.
No regrets here.

I just cant stand those oil painting finish photos. Its app problem because on gcam photos looks much better, more details and no oil paint effect.
And i cannot use the stock camera app for movies. There are no settings or options. No focus lenght, no white ballance, no controls for manual control.
Well, if anyone cares I can say that the 6t has been the most awful phone I have ever owned. I literally now own a $700 brick. And OnePlus the company should be ashamed of themselves. I am fighting to get this phone running. And customer support has gone 100% silent on me. My last call, I got the perpetu-hold by the agent and I hung up after about 30 minutes of waiting for her to "consult a coworker". It's been so bad that I am trying to social shame them. I have a youtube post titled "Why my OnePlus 6T sucks and OnePlus Support is awful". I would link it, but I'm too new on the forum.
It's why I'm now on this forum trying anything I can to get this phone working.

Well... Why did it stop working?
I have shifted from my iPhone 6s to Oneplus 6t. The main reason for the shift to Oneplus specifically in Andorid is the gestures it offers - switching apps, closing apps etc
After 1 month of usage, I believe Oneplus is the phone, if you want to get things done. Its fast, its battery is amazing. The reason why some people get annoyed is because its just too fast and for this reason it doesn't seem fluid. But trust me, using the iphone for years, I did enjoy the fluidic experience, however, I don't like it anymore and prefer speed, performance and battery life and Oneplus delivers on all these aspects. The teardrop notch and in screen fingerprint make the experience even better
