Will you buy another 6 inch phone.. Mate 10 maybe? - Mate 8 General

With the mate 10 on the horizon, will you stick with Huawei or a different brand. Could you get a similar spec with a budget Chinese phone like Xiaomi?

Phablet category will be dead soon since all including mate 10 will go over too 18:9 aspect ratio which means a lot smaller screen area...

We are seeing some big players (Samsung, LG, Google) experimenting with 18:9 (2:1) but it will be down to the consumer i guess if these phones are as popular as previous other aspect ratio models.

First of, I bought my mate 8 less than a year ago, and have no intention of changing it before 2/3 years. It would be a poor choice of a phone if I felt the need to change it every year.
But if by accident I HAD to change it, I think I would look toward the note note 8 rather than than the mate 10. The plus being stylus and waterproof. And since none of those are things are really must-have, I would most probably look for a cheaper large screen phone. Maybe another used mate 8 or mate 7. Or whatever good occasion I can find.
I mean, I can't really see what the mate 10 would do better.
Battery life ? Haven't seen any real gain for years.
Photo quality ? Some progress, but the mate 8 is more than enough for me.
Raw power ? I don't use it much. Mate 8 has more than enough for years to come.
VR ? It's still not good on a smartphone, mate 8 or otherwise..
What I'm trying ot say is that I'm satisfied by my mate 8. But the question is more "are recent phones bringing anything worth the change ?"
For a few years now, phones makers have been strugling to bring anything new of value to the table. Raw power and screen quality have reached a level where they are already beyond what you need for the use of a smartphone. There has been nothing new in battery for years. Photo quality can still get better, with better low light and/or zoom. But it's far from being enough to motivate a change. And soldity/reliability has been progressing very slowly.
Today, I think I could have a Mate 7 or a mate 10 and barely see the difference in everyday use. Both phone would be smooth, have pretty much the same software (with a few tweaks for the mate 7) same battery life, pretty much same internet speed ... one would take slightly better photo, and that's it.

Both mare 8 and 9 I one of the phones that have aged best. Pocketnow did a video about the 9 recently.
Mate 8 does not feel obsolete at all despite being from 2015

6 inch yes... mate/Huawei no..

nice thread and perfect timing id say, kudos to rhe OP!
after the mate 8 (which i will most likely keep for another year at least, especially since there is nothing interesting on the market atm or in the near future, except maybe the xiaomi mi mix 2), i will not be able to go back to anything smaller than 6 inches. it is just so damn nice to have so much screen real estate! and ive gotten used to the size, everything smaller seems tiny in comparison, whereas my mate 8 just seems "normal" in size
i agree with above posters concerning the 2:1 screen ratio that is becoming more popular lately: the diagonal numbers seem to get larger (i.e. S8+ at 6.2 inches) but the actual screen area is actually identical to the mate 8 with 0.2 inches LESS diagonal screen size! so thats something to keep an eye out for when buying a new phone these days.
looking at the bezels of the mate 8 id say a phone with a 16:9 screen of around 6.4-6.5 inches and sporting razorthin bezels on all four sides would be absolutely perfect in screen/overall size and -to-body-ratio
in retrospect, my mate 8 experience so far (about 17 months ownership) has been quite pleasant! its a great phone, excellent battery life (10h sot on average with a range of 8-12h depending on usage intensity), super solid built (feels like a tank but still very graceful and sexy), awesome screen and lots of real estate on it and last, but not least, fluid stable software.
the only real gripe i have with it is that we are dependant on basically one or two major devs, namely kangvip and hrt team, thats it. otherwise we will be EOL once huawei stops publishing firmware upgrades.
nevertheless, i will keep an eye out for the mate 10 and see what it brings to the table

YOU BET
In 2010, I started with the Dell Streak 5. Oh the looks I got from people "THAT is your phone?" "What do you need
a screen THAT big". This was in the day that 3.5" was the NORMAL size or a smartphone.
Then, I went with the Samsung Galaxy Note1, then the Mate2, and now the Mate8.
I PREFER the larger screen, mostly because my eyesight isn't what it once was, and, because the larger screen
phones usually have larger batteries.
If they make one with smaller bezels, but not 100% bezel-less, with a 4,000mAH or larger battery, that is about or
a little thicker than the Mate2/8, I'll get one.

My mate 8 still works fine.

6"? Yes.
Huawei? No. The build and quality are fantastic. Though, EMUI still needs a lot of bug fixes.
I didn't realize people cared (so much) about aspect ratio over hardware and software.

we dont i just said its important to consider that with 18:9 screens we actually get less screen area than with 16:9 screens at identical inches.

I think the strategy behind 9:18 is that its different to what the last generation of phones have, it will look a bit different, so seem attractive. We have had super high res screens before for a while (LG G3 etc) but 9:18 is something new. Thing is we keep falling for it :-/
in a perfect world id like something with a similar sized screen to the mate 8, significantly lighter (feels a bit of a tank in the hand if I'm honest) excellent battery life ( 16 SOT) and a camera that could really produce stunning shots in all conditions. Ok, maybe a few years away with all that but the upgrades we now have are pretty marginal and I think the mobile phone companies are clutching at straws in terms of upgrade possibilities with todays technology.
Like most I'm in no rush to upgrade the Mate 8, if rumor is to be believed we will see Android O at some point but I wont hold my breath, having said that, Battery life has took a major hit since upgrading from marshmallow to Nougat.

mmm yes and no. actually, its our own (the consumer`s) fault: samsung, LG and others did their market research including consumer questioning and the result was this: consumer wants bigger screens but without the hassle of a phone too wide to hold in one hand! solution? easy: make the screens longer but stick to the same width! thus we get 18:9 screens, voila
nice benefit for the manufacturers / for marketing: diagonal size in inches increases by a LOT (i.e. friggin 6.2 inches diagonal on S8+) but screen real estate doesnt increase as much as with 16:9 screens! (again: mate 8 with 6.0 inch screen has same display area as S8+ with "bigger" 6.2 inch screen )

That's a fair comment, and I can see why a narrower phone with similar screen size would appeal to some. Also I guess it's a bit more pocketable. Personally tho I like 16:9 but guess I wouldn't rule out something slightly easier in the pocket.
Xiaomi Chiron anyone?

18:9 is the new cancer that we have to live with.. People are stupid they think 6 inches with 18:9 is bigger then on 16:9 for instance..
screeb area is actually less with the same inch size on 18:9.
People still when talking about phone sizes mostly talk about "inches" but you need to know the aspect ratio now also..

Help me decide!

Hey guys! So i've narrowed down my choices for a new phone:
Huawei Mate 7 or Xperia Z3. Both are great sexy phones but I like the larger screen, fingerprint, and less bezel on the mate 7. Both have around the same screen on time (around 10 hrs).
For Mate 7:
- Screen looks washed out compared to other flagships, Z3 gets brighter
+ Bigger screen, smaller bezels
+ Fingerprint scanner
? Kirin 925 (I've heard its worse than the 801 and has lags and micro stutters when scrolling in browser, is the phone laggy?)
For Xperia Z3:
+ Bright, colorful screen
- Smaller screen, bigger bezels
+ Front facing stereo speakers
+ Faster updates (It's nice but I don't really mind that much about updates, as long as the mate7 eventually gets lollipop)
Is there some way to adjust the colors and make it more saturated/vivid on the Mate 7? and are the reports of the Mate 7 lagging in browser etc true? Please help me decide what you would go for if you had the choice between these two
It would depend on how you would use the phone. If you are just a regular user and a non techy one. Mate7 is good enough. But keep in mind that Emui has no app drawer. Updates are slow compared to Sony. Limited custom Roms if you are in to that. I would suggest reading the owner's impressions thread to see how others like the phone and the pros and cons for them.

Thanks. I primarily use my phone for social stuff like Facebook and Whatsapp (though barely use the camera), listening to Music, and heavy gaming, like GTA San Andreas (which i've heard runs extremely well on max settings (because of the mali GPU in the mate 7) compared to Snapdragon devices, where they lag on max,) and Asphalt 8. I don't care about updates or custom roms ever since Xposed. Can always stick an AOSP based launcher on top, and that would probably be the first thing I do if I do this device. Don't care about updates that much. My main, biggest gripe of the Huawei is the screen color saturation, they look bland compared to other flagships. Anybody figure out anything to fix that? My Nexus 4 had the same problem, but after using a custom kernel with gamma controls the screen just felt like something else completely. I got spoiled by the beautifully saturated colors of my N4 after calibration, and don't want a bland screen. The Z3 is better in this regard - its not the most saturated screen but its miles better than the mate 7 in that regard. Why can't Huawei calibrate their screens properly out of the box!
Colors are great, Screen doesn't look washed at all. First go and see the phone live in a showroom.
The phone it's not laggy.
But if you are a heavy gamer don't expect to get 10 hours screen on time with neither one. 5-6 hours maybe, and with brightness set on auto.
8 hours screen on time it't the best that I got with mate7( dual sim version).
Sony are not quick to update their phones also, just one month ago they updated z3 to lolipop.
The warmth/colour tone can be adjusted via settings slider
Screen is excellent, my last phone was a z2

I saw the Mate 7 irl for some reason I think it was washed out... maybe it's just my imagination :silly: i'll try to check it out again in a store
In all honesty wait for Mate 8 it will be released soon most likely.
And also I heard news today that Note 5 most likely will be released in July too...
Mate 7 will most likely drop even more in price for that reason It might be attractive for some though.
It still a good phone for the price.
If you wait for a bit more... You can get almost all of the last years flagships for less after july or august.

Please tell me after Note 5 and mate 8 and D8 what the hell other devices are worth waiting for ?
as what I know there are known.. unless you want an iphone 6s
The reason Note 5 will be released more early is that they want to get it out before Iphone 6s the big version.
Also Samsung have said the development has gone faster the expected with Note 5.
Do you mean paper releases like oneplus1 ?
or the new bezelless oppo find ?

The prices have already come down enough for them to be in my price range for all of last year's flagships, so that doesn't matter to me anymore. Its just these three phones which I have narrowed it down to because of my personal preferences
If some sort of confirmation or leak about a huawei nexus, or mate 8 or oneplus two gets released by the end of June then I think i'll wait if I like, otherwise i'll just take one of these phones, because right now i've been with a Lenovo A706 (some cheap budget android phone that came free with my new laptop) because my nexus 4 crapped out on me a year ago, and this lenovo is horrendously slow, bad battery life bad everything basically
Note 5 (and iPhone 6/6S) will be too expensive for my price range (my price range is ~1700 AED), and I haven't liked Samsung's designs since the S2/Galaxy Nexus, because of the colored, pattern bezels, (just want deep black) which is also the main reason why I won't consider the Note 4, even though it has better specs overall (and that LOVELY amoled screen) and is in my price range. I'm very picky with my devices, because I only change once every 3-4 years.

Good bye to Mate 7

I did drop the phone on stone floor yesterday now the touch does not work on the majority of the screen.
In panic I have bought a used LG G3 as replacement I got it for a very good price.
yeah So I will probably not be checking this forum so much more... I hope the Mate 8 will be worth update for.
The Mate S despite beautiful design was not convincing when it did come to batter cpu and gpu and also no sd card slot.
What I liked about huawei is that they did copy the good things from apple, but now it seem they are ok with copying the bad sides also, which means
very small battery (for good profit margins) and slow and outdated cpu/gpu.
Apple use outdated and bad hardware and they manage to get the most out of it with very good software. Apple spend a lot of money on the software that is how they get away with such weak specs. Well I hope Mate 8 will be a good spec monster, the software is important but a 3rd party launcher usually does the trick. New Mate 8 will most likely have curved display and for me a very seductive screen to body ratio like no other manufacture.. the Kirrin 950 also seem to me very convincing as long as the GPU is not the bottleneck as it is on M7.
I still do not forget huawei for promising us Lollipop, yet we are still here 9 and half month into 2015 and still no real sign of official release.
I cannot understand what is taking such long time, my only conclusion is why it does take such a long time is because they are not working at it at all.
The status have been on hold for the bigger part of the year, maybe they did work on in it for 1 month, they did not meat the deadline so now the project is on hold that is what I think. Despite what is it worth waiting for lollipop ? if you ask me the answer is no.. Lollipop will satisfy no one now when 6.0 is out.
Also all new function and looks from Lollipop will not be present in the EMUI lollipop.. also same bad animations.. say what you want but animations are damn important...beautiful fast and fluid animations during multi tasking and switching between apps is very important, Apex Launcher did finally give me the smooth and fast animations i wanted from day one..

By the way if u talk about update I can accept but if u talk about device copy let me tell u that iphone had release small screen and now they also releasing with larger one so we can say iphone also perfect copier from other devices...It's 'coz of Huawei brand our country can use mobile with the same level of Samsung and others in lower cost...I accept Huawei update is just like losers but I accept this also Huawei did care about cost of middle men...for iphone I like to say it's just a selfish brand which sell with higher price that everyone can't effort...It's mean wealthy are wealthy and poor don't have value...I like to see get opportunities too everyone and that's bring Huawei and still bringing with upcoming Huawei nexus...

Huawei says P9 will be very surprising..
Sad...i own both the old mate and the mate7 and being dump i dropped them both but the devices are strong as hell, still working perfect. And just to go on i bought the P8max last week and have to say that this is THE ONLY worthy device to step up. Huawei did a far better job than all the other manufactors, and being able to use sd card or two sims is perfect for me. Never change a winning team.
LG G3 I have had it now for 2 days. at stock it was unusuable very slow and laggy after installing apex with some tweaks and change animations speed in dev options it goes very fast again..it goes faster then Mate 7 now.
Compare to Mate 7 the screen of G3 is really horrible.. 2k in my ass..the contrast and black levels are still crap..
My goal was to buy a phone that I could have temporary and sell it with minimal loss in price.. so I will have G3 now until Mate 8 most likely..
But I have concluded 5.5 is too small.. but 6.0 is almost too big.. I think 5.7 might be the best of both worlds.. never had a 5.7 inch phone..
but 5.5 was definitely smaller then I expected which make it very nice for one hand use.. my thumb go all the way to the left side..

compare to any other devise i can say huawei is the most stable and strongest hardware devises...infact i m using p6 still now even my back battary cover come out when i drop it hardly...I will never ever believe that any other devices can stand so strong like that bcoz i saw how its drop and i saw body crash but screen and hardware still working perfect....I cant blame huawei for their loser updates fail many times, bcoz i m myself did drop my p6 that result me with back cover opened and now mate7 that result me 3 angel of coners crash but both perfect working...i have friends who is using LG,Samsung, Iph but i saw them always screen broken, body over temp, and screen blast(Iph 6plus)...but i never got any experience bcoz i m using huawei...so if u want to use any other device keep shut and use, dont try to say any bad words which makes perfect for others...thanks

Don't expect Mate 8 less than 6'' man ! it might be even over 6'' !! I told u I had G3 and I almost vomited.. that 2k screen does nothing only drains battery.. and when u go to apps resolution goes auto down to 720p and for google chrome even less 640x360 .. just google ''what is my resolution'' and u'll see ..
So text on 2k screen when browsing internet and reading looks jerky , grainy , choppily.. it is not smooth as on 1k screens..

Nexus 6P vs Mate 8

Im looking to upgrade from a Nexus 6 to either a 6P or Mate 8. I just found this phone this morning and looks interesting. What do you think of this phone vs the 6P? Thanks for your opinions.
I have both. I came from a nexus 6. They're both great phones. My only sadness with this phone is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. As much as I really hate that, I can't put this phone down. Battery life with heavy use I'm still putting down average 6-7 hours screen on time. The 6p is pretty solid of a phone too but I'll be giving it to my gf since the mate 8 serves more than enough of its purpose.
Hopefully one day maybe we get an aosp ROM

I have both. I came from a nexus 6. They're both great phones. My only sadness with this phone is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. As much as I really hate that, I can't put this phone down. Battery life with heavy use I'm still putting down average 6-7 hours screen on time. The 6p is pretty solid of a phone too but I'll be giving it to my gf since the mate 8 serves more than enough of its purpose.

i would like an aosp/CM rom as well. my problem with my N6 is battery life. i heard the 6P is better and seems like this is even better than that. i have been reading on here about issues people have been having with the phone being in chinese and issues with notifications and such. guess i need to decide if the lack of aosp with the other issues will be something i can live with for now.
No problems with notification for me and no Chinese problems either. People probably bought a Chinese model and are complaining about Chinese being on it. Go figure. And also coming from a nexus 6 I only have up due to screen being broken and unable to repair it at the moment, this fits even better in hand than the nexus 6. Solid as hell. Like I said, my only complaint is lack of aosp or cm ROMs. So far I'm able to live with it. If it gets too much, I'll serve my nexus 6 back to the States for repair. Not necessary though considering the hell of an upgrade this phone is
well, most issues and complaints here actually arise because people are too lazy to read as for custom roms, the ball started rolling on that we already have twrp, unlocked bootloader, decrypted boot image and root capability. first dev is also already working on a custom rom, so im pretty optimistic for the near future
sure, development will never get as expansive as with the nexus 6P, but hey, its a nexus
u gotta decide whats important to you: mate 8 trumps everything concerning cpu performance (even upcoming s820 according to benches thus far) and battery life. if gpu performance is important to you though, the 6P is definitely more performant, although not massively due to the higher screen resolution vs. the mate 8.
another important point: screen vs body ratio! iphone 6s plus / nexus 6p / mate 8 are all the same size, give or take 1-2mm. difference being:
iphone 5.5 inch display
nexus 5.7 inch display
mate 8 friggin 6 inch display
coming from the nexus 6 ull be surprised to have such a "small" device sport the same screen size at way smaller dimensions
and i can say the screen is super sharp, has great colors and is briiiight as heck, everything u can want in a good screen
just my 2c on the matter...

Not looking for ETA's or anything but does the dev have a forum post or place where we can follow him?
just keep an eye out on the development section

Another 2 plus points for the Mate 8 that people don't give much importance but for me are relevant are the fm radio and sd card slot.
yes! i was pleasantly surprised to see the fm radio functionality
I have both and hands down the mate 8 is the winner. I got the mocha brown 64GB 4GB ram and it flies. Had notification issues with the Chinese Rom so I just converted to international and now no problems. I listen to a lot of music and this goes a lot louder and quality is much clearer. Camera seems good but I'll be testing it more over the next few days. 6p is going on eBay.

Will you update to Mate 9 ?

Huawei Mate 9 have been officially presented, did it meet your expectations will you upgrade to it from your mate 8 ?
For me, it's a No
The pro version is simply too expensive and I personally dislike the front button
The normal version, camera aside, is more software improvement than hardware. For me the double leica camera is not enough reason for changing

Good said, I agree with you, they have done a lot with the software this year, the physical look on mate 9 looks very uninspiring, even their honor 8 looks superior, I would prefer the same back as honor 8.
The camera bump looks disgusting.. it is much about how the camere will live up to the expectations.
I wish it had 3 in one sim/sd slot like they have in some honor devices, most people most use SD card so then they can not use the dual sim functionality.
i am disspointed there is no amoled screen, to be honest I expected 2k amoled this time.. to make it daydream and VR ready.
They could make the smartphone thicker to make bigger battery to compensate for a more high resolution screen and also to get rid of the camera bump.
Personally I have not decided what to buy, it is this against Mi Mix for me, mi mix have **** camera.. that is the main difference..I also think EMUI 5.0 is better in the software department then MIUI.
I wish the price would be little better.
I do not like the Porshe version that much despite the price, 5.5 is way to small, I had a 5.5 before and it is a big difference in experience during the 3 month I had it I bought a tablet, when I get a 6 inch I have no need for tablet.
as I said we will see about the camera.. it is the camera that will decide the true caliber of this device.
if not that Mate series is still one of the very few devices that have an acceptably battery time, not every one want to have a battery back always with you ..
I am extreme heavy user, with a screen on time with about 8 hours per day sometimes more..
I bought mate 8 only about 3 months ago, and I feel if Mate 8 get EMUI 5.0 it would feel reborn again..so not sure how I will do..
I know from past experience the prices of Mate devices are kind of static so there is no reason to wait 6 months to buy it, if you are going to buy it, buy it as soon as possible since the price will not get lower with time.
Just for cpu upgrade, I won't upgrade to Mate 9
Porche edition, out of reach
You should become their designer..hehehe

Not worth for now. Its not Samsung that you HAVE TO upgrade ahahha
Mate 8 still my no.1 !
I am waiting on my Phab 2 Pro to come Tuesday..I have the Mate 8, then got Mi Max, and then got Honor Note 8..sold both of them and went back to the Mate 8 only because of 4G coverage and the Mate 8 is definitely a top phone but I wanted a bigger phone that have great specs as well as full LTE coverage..I can honestly say the Mate 8 is probably the best phone I ever had
Agree

reasons for upgrading would be restricted to: significantly higher gpu performance / double camera. thats it. and if youre a user focussing on those two departments, u wouldnt have gotten the mate 8 in the first place so its kind of a moot point to go from mate 8 to mate 9, unless ure just OCD about having the latest and greatest while not giving a crap about cost ^^

I paid 300 euros for this Mate 8 yesterday... it was new..only NXT-DL00... but with your help (thanks again!!) I hope to 'convert' it to an International one... I knew there would be a catch for 300...oh well
Mate 9? Hmm maybe next year when the prices drop hahah... the Porsche Edition is definitely NOT worth it if you ask me, that even makes Apple phones seem cheap lol...
No, because I just bought the 8.
I used the Mate2 for over 2 years, because I thought it was a good value.
When the 8 was talked about last summer, I looked at it, but when the price was announced,
I said nope, too expensive. I waited...
Late this summer, with the 9 coming, I started watching the price on the 8 drop. When it reached a
level I thought for me, was a good value, I bought it.
"But, you didn't get the newest software, newest camera bla bla bla."
So? I ran the Mate2 on JB for over a year before LL came around, and still have LL on it now. Latest
and greatest doesn't concern me. As for the camera on the 9? If I really want to take a photograph,
I'll grab my dSLR. I only use the smartphone camera to record work related stuff, mainly close up
photos. I don't play games on my phone, so super duper graphics pixel peeping stuff doesn't concern
me. Oh, 10 years ago, I flashed every new rom that came along for my HTC phones, but things are
so stable today, that to me, a smartphone is a "toaster oven". You turn it on and use it. I don't bother
rooting or anything else. If stock is stable, I leave it alone.
My phone is my job lifeline. All of my service tickets are done on a web based app, as are remote connections
to the machines I work on and monitor. I'm a field service supervisor, so I'm constantly on the phone with
other techs, and factory reps. Around 2,000 minutes on the phone, hundreds of emails, texts, photos, along
with a lot of streaming audio. It has to be a good value, and have a good battery, which is why I got the
Mate2 when I did.
The 9 looks like a good phone, but it is priced like a lot of "flagships"....to high for reality. In a year, if I've
got an itch for something new, when the mate10 is announced, I'll start watching the price of the 9. If it falls
to what I think it is worth to me, I'll buy one.
No, mate 8 was my first Android after iPhone 3,4 and 5 and lumia 930. I liked the big screen of the mate 8 a lot, but i don't like that googles only reason for making android is user data.
And the apps want way to much permissions.
In may i updated to b320. because i didn't get ota updates and i read articles, stating b320 would be the next ota.
Well it wasn't and i didn't get any update since may.
The going back to mui 4.0 routine, is to much for me, i have so many offline maps on the device for example, that it would take several hours to download them again.
And where to go? There isn't any update for mui 4.1 at all, for six month now.
So the main reasons for leaving Huawei is, that i just see regular updates for other regions in the world and nothing here. L29.
I live in Germany and all companies including, huawei, lg, htc samsung only sell the smaller Ram versions here, like 32 gb and 64 next year if i am lucky.
So i am thinking about a wopping 256 gb iphone 7 plus and never messing with small ram and sd card again.
it looks like Huawei will compete with Mi Mix , wow what a dream, maybe it will be what Mi Mix should have been since it have some flaws..such as bad camera.

No upgrade. The Mate 8 battery life is amazing as it is. Plus, conversion rate to CAD will probably cost $1k after taxes for the top model. If you already own the mate 8, I see no need to upgrade.

Mate 10

Anyone watching the keynote? I really love my mate 9 but I'm already doing my financials, mate 10 Pro on the way!!!
I prefer mate 10 with the headphone jack and microsd card slot. Also I don't really like the 18:9 ratio... but I still need time to consider.
I am going back to Nokia after my mate 9... EMUI sucks.

HAHA! Good luck with that! Why does EMUI suck tho? I think it's really good... Have fun with Nokia
I really want to see the LTE band support of the Chinese model. I need Band 41, and for some reason even though they had support for it for non-Chinese Mate 9's, they don't for Mate 10's.
Regardless I have to buy one. After all, my business depends on it
The new mate 10 versions are a disaster. If they combined them into one phone at the price of around 600 bucks it would kill all other phones like this just meh.

Yes.
I don't know what they were thinking for those design/specs/features decisions.
No matter which one you take - Mate 10 or Mate 10 Pro, there are trade-offs that are not acceptable - at all.
I will keep checking on xdadevelopers to see everyone's feedback on the Mate 9 with Oreo (once that is rolled out).
Based on that, I may go pick up a Mate 9.
Otherwise, I have money that I had (planned) to spend on a Mate 10 (16:9 version) - but now, I am not sure it is worth it.
One last thing. Why on earth did Huawei go and place the fingerprint sensor on the FRONT of the phone ???
Too many compromises for me to swallow - if I am expected to pay flagship prices for this.

Mate 9 is good if you can get it for a good price. I wouldn't pay more than 400 for mate 9. The biggest advantage this phones have is their battery and on this 1080p display on mate 9 it will last u 7 hours min. No other phone can do that. Software support is lacking even though you really don't need the newest all the time since there will always be bugs and flaws. Gaming is great even if the GPU is weaker then it's competition. Display is good on accuracy but you need to play a bit with it and set it more to red tint zone since it is naturally set to too much blue. Overall good phone with it's flaws like any other.
..
When the Mate 9 came out, I wanted to go for the pro cos of the amoled screen, but disliked it for two reasons (front-facing fps and smaller screen size). Now, I wanted to go for the mate 10 and they switch the location of the fps.
I'm in a bind;
1. I hate fps on front so it has to be the pro for me
2. As an audiophile, I love wired headsets (pro doesn't have it) so, Mate 10
3. I want a 6GB ram
4. I want an oled screen but just found out that the Mate 10 screen has 499 ppi while the pro has 402 ppi which means that the Mate 10 is sharper but the pro has more vivid colours.
This leaves me in a conundrum cos each phone has something I dislike and like.
I would have loved the pro as it is, with its features but have a 3.5mm audio jack, and at least a 499ppi
I feel all what you feel? Idiot decisions. I really don't know which one to go for? And it's making me dislike both. Damn
Over all I think there many nice, some subtle, improvements. Worry a little about the AI. Especially as data is gathered about you.
My Chinese version of Mate 9 has 6GB ram. Will there be a similar Chinese Version of Mate 10? Don't know why only offer 4GB Mate 10.
How does performance compare for 4GB vs 6GB on Mate 9? Not interested in pro version. Hate 18:9 ratio. Too thin. More like candy bar...
Might get Mate 10 although not currently offered in US.
Unbelievable, after hyping it up so much, this is the best Huawei can do. I love the mate 9 and was looking forward to the Mate 10 but with all the [email protected] they are doing with this release, I probably will wait till next year for something better. I got to say this is one of the more disappointing releases ever.
To be honest, i came here to see the opinion of mate 9 users about mate 10, because i thoughts it is really bad... i was thinking between note 8 and mate 10... but after seeing mate 10, i was really disappointed. tho, i appreciate the speed and performance, but also not on the behalf of features. who needs so fast smart chip if it is not going to be used or not enough features to use it.
i might probably go for note 8.

There will be a Mate 10 version with more storage and more RAM released in China. Not sure if there will be a 256 but there will be a 128/6 at least from what I hear. So you could buy a Chinese one and rebrand it, and it would solve #3 at least.
Happy that I got my Mate 9 for $500. Although the Mate 10 is tempting, The pricing of the mate 10 is ridiculous
I actually like the new designs but won't get it. The mate 9 is still a great phone.
The mate 11 will be my next mate imo.

Funny, that's one of the things that would make me want to switch to the Mate 10. Mate 9 was the first phone I've had with a rear sensor. It's just not as natural to me as a front sensor, especially when it's sitting near me on a desk. Having to pick it up just to get to the sensor is a PITA. I haven't read much about the Mate 10, but if they did the thing where the sensor replaces all of the on-screen controls (swipe to go back, etc.), that would be great. Though it would still take a lot more than a new fingerprint sensor to get me to upgrade phones.
Picking between the Mate 10 and 10 Pro, seems like the Mate 10 is the best value. If you can live without wireless charging and fps on back of phone, and, resign yourself to the likelihood that development will likely be slower than some Qualcomm based phone, the Mate 10 is probably the best all round Android phone out there. If you know of a better one please chime in and say why!

HOPEFULLY the era of overpriced phones is hitting its peak. Already I've heard many say they are skipping the iPhoneX because of the price. I think the silly price of phones, considering each phone within the past few years is basically the same as last years model, with sideways improvements, or gimmicks. First words out of most presenters mouths when shown is "colorful, stylish, slim".
Who cares. Apple was the really screwy one putting SLICK glass on the BACK of a phone, that many people will put a case on anyway, or, run it naked, drop it and shatter the front AND the back.
At least Huawei has kept the 4,000mAH battery from the Mate2, through the 10. If they would have kept the price down a bit, they could clean up. I'm not one of the "gotta buy the latest/greatest" because I find a better bang for the buck, of buying last years latest & greatest thing, typically for 1/2 price.
Then you'll hear the "but you won't get the latest updates"....For me, it doesn't matter. Heck, in my experience, except for kit-kat, everything from Jelly Bean on up has been stable enough that I had no need to root, hack, custom flash my 3 Huawei phones.
