Essential Phone Compatible with Verizon's VOLTE - HD Voice - Band 4 ??? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I currently have the HTC U11 and despite loving the phone there is one major drawback for me and that's the lack of Band 4 working for Verizon Wireless. My S8 would get speeds of 50-65mbps on Band 4 and now I only get speeds of 10-15mbps on Band 13 on my HTC U11 which really hurts my tethering. Even though HTC's Unlock U11 show that it is capable of using Band 4, it doesn't work with Verizon.
So my Question is, will Band 4 on the Essential Phone work with Verizon and will VOLTE be present? :fingers-crossed:
Anyone know? Any Ideas?
The Essential Phone’s supported networks/bands are as follows:
UMTS/HSPA+ : 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 , 8
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
CDMA EV-DO Rev A.: 0, 1, 10
TD-SCDMA: 34, 39
FDD-LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 17, 20, 21, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 66
TDD-LTE:38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43

Bump, would love to know too... Am deciding on this phone vs pixel 2 on Verizon

I'll let you know as soon as mine arrives.

Same here, with my U11 being stuck to band 13 the phone becomes basically useless during peak hours in the city.

If you have an already activated phone, you can just swap the SIM over and it will work. I just did this with my daughter's phone. No problems so far.

I wish people would stop talking out of their asses. If you don't know the correct answer, don't state something definitively like you do.

I really hope the PH-1 gets HD Voice, I would hate to go back to no being able to use data while in a phone call, those were dark times.

Keep in mind that the U11 "supports" all the bands and cdma just like the essential phone does but It's verizon who's forcing them to disable them via software. If you have root you can actually enable these extra bands and see for yourself. I'll be getting the essential hopefully once it's out as well.

You have a link for how to do that? I searched and came up with nothing, well nothing I felt confident in. If the essential turns out to be a miss I may consider the U11 if I can turn on the volte.

I hope you're not confusing things. The device only works over VoLTE not CDMA, so VoLTE is already enabled. You're just limited to band 13 by the software.
Now to enable the other bands you need root and the app is called network signal guru. In the settings under experimental you can append missing bands. Then in the 3 dot menu you can enable them under lock bands. I use lte discovery to confirm the band I'm on.
Keep in mind this will allow to connect to other bands but this can also affects battery life since it can jump between bands now. Just depends on your coverage. This also will not enable carrier aggregation since that's software based also and missing.

Gotcha. And no problem. It really is a shame that Verizon cripples the u11. Here's hoping they don't do the same to the essential.

If you tell me how to check band functionality I will.
Also I *think* volte works, as the enhanced LTE is checked with a description of "Use LTE network to improve voice and other communication quality"

On the essentially I'm almost positive VoLTE will work out the box. It's nothing new and even the nexus phone compatible with Verizon had this.
Easy way to test this is to add HD voice to your Verizon line if you haven't already. Reboot the phone and it should just work. I think since you have that option and it's not greyed out means you already do. If you call another Verizon user with VoLTE enabled you'll see the little HD icon when connected.
You can use lte discovery app in the play store to see what band you are currently connected to. Band 13 is there oldest and can be the most congested depending on where you live. Band 2 is newer with band 4 being the newest that supports xlte.

I've been getting server error messages while trying to make outgoing calls. Was also told incoming calls have gone straight to voicemail. Anyone else see this issue?

hey yeah I encountered the same problem using my Verizon service. The only fix I discovered that worked is to disable "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" within the phone's Cellular neurotic settings menu. Once I unchecked that option, I was then able to make outgoing calls.

On my essential, (got it last night). VoLTE works for sure out of the box, enhanced LTE is checked (was by default. Made a test call to my company provided Verizon s7 edge. I do have the HD icon, (also verified I could surf the web while on a call) hence voice/data simultaneously.
No Wi-Fi calling however.

Identical experience for me, thankfully. VoLTE working fine, signal strength is good, HD calling sounds fine, calls coming through as they should.
I have to admit: I like this phone a lot more than I thought I would. I might just keep it. Feels great in the hand despite being a heavy square brick, it has that "quality" feel to it that was sort of missing on some past Android devices. It is also way less laggy than my S8.

##data# activation and Band 3

I noticed under the sprint hidden data menu (##3282# on dialer) that band 3 and LTE were disabled. To enable, go to hidden menu, edit, LTE, enable band 3 and LTE. Had to do this in my Nexus 5 before this phone since sprint didn't release Spark update before 4.4.3. Do not know if this applies to all since may differ but thought I'd share since having both disabled.
---- Instructions for enabling: (thanks eyecon82) ----
1. dial ##3282#
2. then click edit (need MSL code - see Android MSL reader apk here http://tools.flashingtools.com/ )
3. then click LTE
4. It will show LTE ( also known as Band 25), Band 3, Band 26, Band 41
5. Enable all bands
6. Reboot
---- To tell what Band on: ----
1. ##debug#
2. enter passcode 777468
3. go to LTE engineering menu
Enabling all bands allows the phone to determine strongest band nearest you and use that connection (also noted within the Nexus 5 thread). The band is from the tower to allow stable data connections. If band is disabled, the phone will never try to connect to towers that use that particular band. NOTE: Android 4.4.3 update just pushed to sprint users allows the tri-band technology (all bands enabled). This manual guide is to activate all bands instead of waiting for Sprint later on through an update. There is no consequence as of now towards enabling all the bands (was getting better service is regions using Nexus 5 after all bands enabled, along with other people having similar success). For the Sprint S5, enabling all bands should have no negative actions, it may show mixed success based on location, whether Sprint upgraded towers as stated in http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...-due-to-circuit-switched-fallback-technology/ (a good read into this issue).
----Band 3----
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/170166-nexus-5-excellent-global-coverage-perplexing-lte-support
From what I've gathered online, Band 3 is international name for LTE, such as through parts of Asia and Europe. It seems disabled by default because we don't use it here, with Sprint being bands 25,26,41. I'm assuming, if we travel, that band would need be enabled for international usage of LTE. so, it's seems band 3 is no negative or positive benefit to enable (as I can see).

I called up Sprint tech support line, Said that I had an issue with service/ that I found a fix awhile back with previous phone by Sprint giving MSL, and that the MSL allowed me to access the ##data# menu to give me the fix. The women gave me the MSL right away, no question asked. Another way Ive seen is to talk to Sprint tech support and just say youre a developer. Id go my way first since I know it worked.Good luck.

Enabling all bands allows the phone to pick up each band separate and determine the strongest one, thus best signal. When disabled, your phone only goes between available bands for LTE, etc. I had a Nexus 5, where Sprint did not enable the tri-band by default and had to do this to the Nexus 5. Got this phone, thought Id look into if all bands enabled, found Band 3 and LTE disabled, so I enabled them using the Nexus 5 fix I did earlier. Experience, noted this also in Nexus 5 forums before 4.4.3 was released which allowed the tri-band to be activated, was frustrated that wasnt enabled by default until now (which is way too long after phone release to use the phone at full potential anyways). So, Id enable ALL BANDS to have the best signal, using Sprint Spark to fullest potential, rather than waiting for an update.
Enabled band 3...we shall see if anything changes.

Band 25 is strongest in your current location, thus showing you on it. Enabling band 3 will allow you to get signal better in band 3 areas. The band is signal from tower for data. Band 25 is normal standard LTE, the top choice of LTE enable on ##data#. On the menu, it won't appear as Band 25, is just the label LTE. LTE enable/disbale (ie, the only one not labeled as a Band) is the Band 25. Band 25, general LTE, is strongest, thus not using other bands. Once you move into another area (ie, maybe a Spark enabled area or another type tower) you will get possibly another band signal over 25.

No idea, possibly goof by Sprint enabling some options and messing with too much from Samsung (such as download booster gone and Connection Optimizer crashing in ART).

Yeah thanks Sprint! I have had 4G phones from Sprint for 3-4 years and never got more than weak 3g at home it sucks..
Another old trick I have done on last few of my Sprint phones some people used to say made connection quicker at times.. Can't say I ever had an issue or notice a change after but personally I remove these proxys..
##DATA# (##3282#)
Go to Multimedia
(Write down default info before in case you ever want to re add them later.. I never have on last few phones..)
Delete the server address from RTSP IP Address and the numbers from RTSP Port
Delete the server address from HTTPPD Address and the numbers from HTTPPD Proxy
You're done!

This article explains what happened when Tri-band phones hit the market. You need to call Sprint, have them make a ticket explaining the Circuit Switch Fallback needs to be enabled on your towers that you had LTE on. Reference this website above. Sprint is trying to get the towers all set up by Mid-2014 for tri-band to be full to go but still have places to do. By putting in the ticket for them to enable the towers nearest you, may speed up the process to get LTE back and stronger.

Nexus 6P with T-mobile?

Anybody got it with tmo? Im planning to buy one, I dont use volte, can i still have 4G or LTE? Can i still use regular calls? How is the band 12 works anyways?
Band 12 is just another band at a different frequency. 700Mhz. Penetrates buldings better, does not affect functionality at all. VoLTE works. 4G works. Regular calls work. It will be fantastic on TMo. Even better once band 12 is approved and if it's available in your area.
In short and to the point. Band 12 being available for you or not will not affect any phone feature at all if you currently get great LTE coverage. Get one!
Thank you for the info
On reddit AMA, a google rep said band 12 would be functioning by ship date. Seeing as the 6P has been shipping has anyone been able to confirm band 12 support?
My 6P has been working perfectly on T-Mobile with WiFi Calling and VoLTE. However MMS is slow to send/receive. Like 10-15 min slow (the MMS will send normally, like 10 seconds but the recipient will not receive for the delayed time).
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I can confirm b12 is NOT working. Though VoLTE and Wifi calling handoff work perfectly. Sounds excellent with you're talking someone with HD calling compatible.
They have 12/VoLTE working on Fi already which bodes well for them being well along toward getting VoLTE lit up on Tmo so 12 can be enabled there.

Interesting. I've heard that project fi does not use VoLTE on either T-Mobile or Sprint. Several people have mentioned that the phone drops out of LTE when making calls.
I'm going on a screenshot posted over on AC, maybe one of the fi boys will read this and clear it up.
This link was posted by another user, seems to clarify things slightly: http://forums.androidcentral.com/nexus-6p/600054-t-mobile-band-12-supported-project-fi.html
Band 12 is not activated on Fi or T-Mobile yet. I live in a band 12 only area. Its a disappointment to not get lte right now lol
and they said they will have it before they start shipping the phones smh
It will come. I'm good for now with wifi calling and my home WiFi. But I'd like it for when I'm traveling
Would there be any way to mod it enabled for T-Mobile?
Can anyone comment whether or not WiFi calling works with phone calls/SMS/MMS? Please verify that it works with all of those, both receiving and sending, in particular MMS because this has been an issue with past phones. Thanks!
WiFi calling works for all of those.

Interesting Network Configuration Finds

Just got my project Fi Nexus 5X. Did some googling and some have reported that band 12 can be unlocked on the TMobile side. However, the *#*#3282#*#* code only works while the phone is connected to Sprint. So after more digging, I figured this out:
The phone contains com.lge.HiddenMenu which has activities all prefixed with "vzw" which implies Verizon, but the same configuration could probably be used with any CDMA network, such as Sprint. I confirmed this by launching the Data hidden menu (usually the 3282 code) via adb shell while connected to TMobile. Most of the configuration options said UNKNOWN or were nonsense, further strengthening my theory of the Verizon menu being used as a generic CDMA menu.
To me, it seems odd that there's no Data Configuration menu for TMobile, or am I being pretty stupid? Someone who knows more about this could probably answer that.
In any case, my end goal is to enable band 12 on TMobile, and increase the Band 41 priority on Sprint (this phone can use Spark but its not configured to do so on Fi)
I am not able to change options in the band priority menu on Sprint, it closes with a permissions error, and when I manually launch the activity as root, it launches it in a view mode, not editing.
These are jsut my finds from a quick investigation, hope it helps someone!

Tmobile 6.0.1 radio experience

Just wanted to share my experience with the new Radio on 6.0.1 so far it is much better.
1) band 12 active
2) better signal switch even when band 12 is not there it now could lock on to edge or other. I get signal now inside basement where I get nothing before
3) I noticed that the phone also dynamic switch to wifi calling now when it got nothing. It did not do this before

Yeah, VOLTE and HD Voice were working from the beginning.
The only thing I have noticed is that my phone seems to take longer to grab signal when I reboot. It shows full signal bars as soon as it turns on but does not connect to data for about 10 seconds. This was instantaneous before so I'm not sure what happened.
Update sometime for the wifi calling to lock on, I still have to restart the phone at time. This aspect still need improvement

I agree I think it's better than 6.0 radio. It's more reliable and consistent specifically when going through dead-ish cell zones.
I've also noticed that it waits till the very last second to switch to b12 whereas the original radio that was reflashed would swap between band 4 and band 12 very often. It now seems to wait to about -110-115 dbm to switch
I've had great luck with t-mobile service in the Minneapolis, MN area. We have very strong TMO coverage in the cities so I wasn't too worried about it, however it gets slightly better service than my iPhone 5s did (loaned until i could buy the 5X, since i had just switched from Verizon).
radio on 6.0.1 is great for me. Generally where my parents is, there is zero reception with t-mobile; this is true when if first got the nexus 5x running 6.0. To my surprise after I upgraded the OS, and was over at my parents this weekend, I see the signal bar being 3/4 full with the LTE logo and I was able to use data on it, where as before I wouldn't even dream of making a voice calls
I'm in band 12 Area Tampa using latest build, with LTE Discovery, locks on band 12 but when call is placed it will switch to band 4. So no go on VOLTE Calling for the nexus 5X. Maybe there's a certification process that I'm missing.

I sold my Nexus 5x, but I do have Blackberry PRIV and use it with T-Mobile. In some locations, I do see when device is on Band 12 and placing a call, it switches to Band 4. In other locations it stays on Band 12 when call is initiated.

VOLTE works, or else TM wouldn't have approved B12 for the 5x. Otherwise, in cases where there is only B12, you wouldn't be able to place calls, which is what TM won't allow. The fact that it switches to B4 during a call doesn't mean it doesn't have VOLTE.
Just before call connection is where is switches and I can actually tell the dif between HD calls. B12 works great for data, just not voice. I'm testing it against a T-Mobile note 4, a grad prime and a 6plus. Tried diff APN. No luck

lg v20 unlocked us996 no LTE

Hi everyone I just purchases the device for B&H Photo and I'm not getting LTE on att. I changed all the apn and still no luck. It's strange because when I put my cricket wireless sim I get LTE and band 17 works flawlessly. So I also trying putting my AT&T sim in my LG G5 and LTE works no problem. Any solution would be greatly appreciated.
that's odd. are we 100 percent sure the 996 has all bands for att lte?

You shouldn't have any problems. I hope you do figure it out. ATT uses bands 2, 4, 17, and 30. The US996 supports 2, 4, and 17. The lack of band 30 I don't think should be that big of a deal as it only appears to be available in congested areas to lighten the load on the other bands. I'd think that 2, 4, and 17 should be available everywhere where ATT is available. I'll have the US996 tomorrow and will try and remember to post my results. I have ATT also.

wonder if att has problems provisioning it on their network like Verizon sometimes does. I'm getting mine Sunday and have verizon so I'm hoping to hell it works fine.

Just got back from AT&T because I needed a nano sim. I'm getting LTE no problem. I've seen reports on other phones not getting no LTE when their line isn't configured for it by AT&T. If you happened to have a non-LTE phone prior to this you may need to reach out and have them provision your sim.

Yeah I have my line provision for lte since my g5 but for some reason it's just not taking it. Are you getting good reception for band 17?

Good signal so far. I'm on band 17 at home with the usual 2-3 bars I got with my old Note 3.

Quite possibly. I went into AT&T and they gave me a new sim for free. Couldn't hurt.
I just got my LG V20 US996 and I have no LTE also. I am in Canada of Fido network. I was getting LTE with the same sim on my LG G3. Any advise?
APN not setup proper or new sim needed.

Hello, sorry, I ask you whether the last update us99610A?
Thankyou..
Hey all...
I just got my V20 unlocked using it on VZWs network. Advance calling is working and I get LTE but I'm having an issue.
My signal sucks. I took the phone to work in DC same places I used my S5 and my speedtest yields a no network message. Apps were taking to 4 hours to down load, google play would lose its connection. My s5 got 12 hours and my v20 us996 died in 4 hours.
I have lte bars but the connection is poor. Calls via 4g advance calling were poor. I had to turn it off.
I was home Sat on Wi-Fi and the battery lastested 24 hours on wifi.
Now I'm in SC on my vacation sitting in a restaurant and can't pull up the internet on 4 bars or vzw lte.
Did a speed test on the same server side by side with my wife's s7. Her ping was 67 and 14 mb of down load and 2.5 mb upload.
My ping was 800 and got 1.5 down load and lost the connection on the upload.
I love everything else about the phone but I can't do this poor reception and quick diying battery becasue of it.
Spoke to Verizon tier two tech support and they say everything is perfect on the phone.
So dont know what to do now.

Crazy thing is that I'm sottong here on band 5 with 3 bars. Band 5 is an AT&T and I'm unlocked connected to Verizon service.
I'm having the exact same problem with my B&H phone - just showing 4G not LTE. But when I do a speed test, I'm getting 25MB/s down\5MB/up, so not so worried about it. I am having problems with phone calls too, but I use google voice so as long as there's a network connection I'm good. I'm going to run into an AT&T store and talk to someone - I bet there's something they have to do to bless the SIM card. I popped mine out of a Nexus 6P and put it into the V20 hoping it might just work, which it mostly is. It's not just you, in other words!
