Network Issue (only GSM) - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using a Samsung S4 GT-i9505. I'm on MOBITEL (Slovenia) or as it is now called Telemach.
So my issue is the following:
Everytime i try to use any network mode other than (GSM only) my connection becomes Emergency calls only.
Issue started appearing after nearly 1.5 years of usage.
I occasionally get a Sim card Removed message, this issue was frequent after 1.5 years than it somehow stopped (nearly).
I checked my IMEI CERTI says NA. Though my IMEI is the same as the one on the box of my phone.
Thing that happend/I did:
My LCD screen got replaced, before that there was no issue.
Replaced sim card, replaced Sim tray (after the issue started reappearing), sometimes (on really rare occasions) 4G somehow works.
*I did have root on my phone
Multiple firmwares, currently a stock one from sammobile (5.0.1):
- AP_I9505XXUHOA7_CL3996895_QB3867680_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
- BL_I9505XXUHOA7_CL3996895_QB3867680_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
- CP_I9505XXUHOA7_CL3996895_QB3867680_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
- CSC_OXA_I9505OXAHOA7_CL3996895_QB3867680_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
All installed using Odin3 (v3.12.3)
Later I installed:
- GSM_Modem_I9505XXUHOE2_and_LTE_Modem_I9505XXUHOE2 which did not help either.
Thank you for your help.

If software doesn't resolve your issue, the only thing left is hardware. In your case, I don't believe the SIM card tray is the issue here, but the motherboard.
Have someone look at the device.

unknonw sim status causes several serious crashes

I am using my MDA II since October and since there I had several serious crashes.
Without any visible sign, the device goes in this "unknown sim status", becoming unable to perform any operation but wait for hours.
From phone, select "options" and the device is blocked.
The only remedy is to use the reset button several times (it can take a while before having the device restarted).
Doing this I also lost everything was stored.
I don't know if this is a common problem or I am so lucky to have something exceptional, but this device is to me not stable nor reliable.
ROM version: 1.52.00WWE

Poor SIM contacts???
I had a similar message a while back. In my case it was a dirty connection on the contacts on my SIM card. Basically the phone can't find the SIM any more. When the same SIM was in my SE T68i phone it would go into the "Emergency Calls Only" mode.
Pull out the battery and jiggle the SIM card and see if that helps.
I asked my provider for a new SIM and it has solved the problem. However, for people like me who (a) swap SIMS regularly (there are some times when carrying an XDA just won't suit), or (b) use their phones in a vibrating environment, poor and worn SIM card contacts are a fact of life.
Hope this helps.

[Q] No Internet.. phone turns off

Hopefully someone can provide me with an anwser or any other form of help
Problem: No Internet signal, I do got the calling signal. When I have no signal for a while, the phone turns off and immediately on.
If I want to get the signal back I have to restart, set the phone's airplane mode on and off or de-select and select the APN name (provider).
Idea's: It seems like the phone doesn't automatically try to find the network back. And when it tries it shuts off.
Tried: I tried the following:
- Replacing the battery
- Trying another sim card, this worked so prob. sim card?(also from another provider)
- Factory reset from menu
- Factory reset from boot menu
- Checked the APN network
Background information: The phone is two years old and was always used with a Vodafone Sim card. It worked perfectly and had no issues. Since a few days I gave the phone to my father and he has a Ziggo (dutch retailer) sim card. With the new sim card from Ziggo the problems started.
The phone also has never been rooted, damaged or something else thats out of the order.
Phone information:
Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500 (was on the cover)
Android-version: 5.0.1
Baseband-version: I9505XXUHOD5
Kernel version: 3.4.0-3995895
[email protected] #1
Build number: LRX22C.I19505XXUHOD5
From your description it sounds as if the APN isn't properly set up, if set up at all. The APN information for the S4 can be found on Ziggo's website, here.
EDIT: According to you, the APN was checked. Compare your APN on the phone with what Ziggo recommends and let us know if they match?
Actually I need the instructions on:
ziggo.nl/klantenservice/mobiel/toestelhulp/#/samsung/i9505-galaxy-s-iv-lte/internet/choice_usecase/handmatig-instellen/ziggo-oud/5
because of different sim cards at Ziggo.
The settings according to the manual are the same as on the phone. Else I couldn't have any internet. I do got internet, but when it loses its connection the phone doesn't get any signal back.
I do checked it again and I have tried the other manual you posted. But it ain't succesful.
It is fixed now.
Apperently the sim card bugged in combination with the S4. I've got a new sim card from the same provider and that works great (till now).

Cannot connect to mobile network: NO SIM CARD - EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY

Hi, I recently bought a new Yotaphone2 (YD206) taking advantatge of the Singles' day discounts, but I am having some trouble connecting to the mobile network.
Since I did not have a nanosim available from the beggining, I started by updating its ROM (I used the last Russian one, while keeping the Chinese radio) and then I rooted it. So far so good.
The thing is, after my microsim was cut into a nanosim (the guy at the mobile phone store did it, using one of these "staplers"), I inserted it in the tray but it is not recognized on the phone. On the screen you can read "No sim card - emergency calls only".
At first I thought it was the radio, and I even flashed it again. I also went back to the original chinese rom, with no success. I think it's not a radio problem, since I can get some statistics in the *#*#4636#*#* menu, but I am not a 100% certain. Of course, I've already tried rebooting, setting the airplane mode on and off, removing and inserting the sim again, etc. Apart from that, wifi, bluetooth and everything else work as expected.
The sim card works, because using a microsim adapter I can fit it in my Nexus 4 and it gets signal. There are three options here: either the radio is not properly configured/flashed, the phone is faulty or the sim has been wrongly cut.
Could you help me troubleshoot the problem?
Solved!
Solved! It was the sim card, it was not properly cut. I used some sandpaper so sand one edge that was a bit rough. I didn't even have to reboot, the phone asked for my pin inmediately. I'm using the last EU rom with the chinese radio.
Yay! Happy!
I have the same issue now and my yotaphone 2 was bought in China... I've tried the sim cards from two companies, both didn't work. I doubt I received a defective product.

GT-I9515 2G only - unable to register to 3G/4G network (Germany)

Hi!
Like the title states my phone (GT-i9515, S4 Value Edition) is unable to register to any other network than 2G.
I'm not really sure if it's a hardware problem or something software related is messed up. So first of - here is what i did:
Checked IMEI - it's correct and corresponds with the one written on the label underneath the battery.
Re-flashed the firmware via Odin (I9515XXU1BPK1_I9515YIA1BOJ1_I9515XXU1BPK1_HOME.tar.md5) -> AP: I9515XXU1BPK1, CP: I9515XXU1BPK3, CSC: I9515YIA1BOJ1.
Checked signal strength under Device Info -> Status: somewhere between -70dBm and -50dBm.
Put the SIM in my primary phone where it's working flawlessly.
See post #3
I already figured, that it seems to be a common problem among Samsung devices (for some strange reason) but all fixing attempts or solutions confirmed working (as far as i can tell) are i9505 specific.
Does anyone know a way to tell whether it's a software or hardware issue (maybe a tool or something)? And is there anyone who has access to a service manual for this device? I know there is one on scribd but i can't download/view it since i have no premium account .
Tell me if i missed out any relevant information.
Thanks in advance!
Silly question, but did you check your APN?
I should add that to the OP. It doesn't seem to be that silly to ask according to what I have read in other posts.
Yes, I did. After i inserted the SIM initially and set the network mode to force 2G only I received a text message immediately containing all the necessary configurations.
If I try to set the APN manually the phone is looking up all available providers and does indeed find some including the one I need to pick for my SIM - even in 3G/4G mode. But if I select the provider (medionMobile, using o2 network) in 3G/4G (WCDMA/LTE) the phone isn't able to register to the network. Only on 2G.
Have you tried a different SIM from a different carrier?
I know your current SIM works perfectly in your other device, but by trying a SIM from another carrier you can determine the following. Should the other SIM work properly in the S4, then we know there isn't an issue with the phone itself, but either the service (likely), or the SIM (less likely). If the other SIM does not work properly, then you may have a problem with the SIM card slot.
Well, i tried the SIM of a friend but he does use the same carrier. I will try that tomorrow at work, there are plenty of SIMs crossing the halls
But let's say it doesn't change anything, is it possible that the SIM card slot is malfunctioning since the phone can obviously operate in GSM mode?
Yes.
Sorry for the late reply. So, I did a check with a SIM of another carrier and well, the phone did not even recognise it. Like there is no SIM present.
To replace a faulty SIM/SD PCB is not much of a deal so I will most propably just do that and post here whether it helped or not.
A service manual would still be much appreciated
The manual for the i9505 version says to check a faulty SIM/SD thing, check the voltage at a certain capacitor. But the PCB layout of the mainboard is slightly different so I would have to guess which is the right one.
Anyway, I thank you for your reply :good:

No service - fresh repaired phone

I just received my phone after being in service where they replaced my motherboard (Allview V1 Viper L a.k.a. Gionee Pioneer P6). I put the SIM card from my temporary phone (working fine) to my personal phone. On my phone (the one from service) there is no service, as it is displayed on my lockscreen NO SERVICE - ORANGE. I tried selecting both manual and automatic network (Can't connect right now. Try again later - automatic & Error searching network - manual). My IMEI seems to be fine, it's the same with my last IMEIs (they changed motherboard, but not my IMEIs). I did try to put the SIM card in the both SIM sockets - no difference. I checked again my SIM card on another phone - works OK. I did a factory reset - no difference. Is it something that I can do? I don't want to send it in service again, as I think it's a software problem to whom I could? find the solution. Comment if you need additional info about my device.
