Can I still receive OTA's if I have TWRP alongside systemless root installed? - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

On my other phone I could receive OTA's because magisk is systemless and system thought it was untouched.
Just checking to see if it's the case here, unlocked bootloader + TWRP 3.1.1 + Magisk v13.0 with SafetyNet passing on OnePlus 5
Will I receive OTA's?
And I know if I do I potentially may have to re-flash TWRP but that's fine.
Oh and the system is still encrypted.

You will receive the ota prompt but you need to install the full zip as ota flash will fail when rooted

Root XT1644 on Nougat?

So I just updated to the latest xt1644 Nougat JP25.93.14-4 and am having an issue installing TWRP and getting it to stick. I installed it and even did a backup, but once I boot to System and then back to bootloader, and finally to recovery, it goes back to stock recovery. Also I am unsure of how to root this device now with Nougat. I've seen on a few sites differing methods. One site had a download for what they called a root package and it was a SuperSU 2.76 version. Another site said to use Phh SU and just install TWRP and then flash Phh. I don't want to mess anything up, can someone point me in the right direction since it seems everything in this forum is for a device other than the XT1644. Lastly, is it possible to revert back to Marshmellow using fastboot, or is that now not possible? I have unlocked my bootloader, obviously. Thanks.
After flashing TWRP you have to manually boot to TWRP without booting to system first. For rooting you have to flash ElementalX or Vegito Kernel and then flash SuperSU v2.79 SR3 or Magisk v12

I did manually boot it. I went back to bootloader, then choose recovery again and it goes back to TWRP. After I boot to system is when the issue occurs. If I go back to bootloader after booting to system, that is when I have the problem. Once I try to go into recovery again it goes to stack recovery. I am trying to install TWRP 3.0.2.0 Athene.

try latest twrp 3.1.0
I got it working. I had originally set it to read only and I think that was the issue. Reinstalled it and mounted system and then choose to allow modifications. It then worked. Now onto root, we will see how that goes.

When rooting do you still do the little systemless trick or is that already accounted for. Does the elemental X kernel play well and is it nice and stable? Thanks for the info.

If you're using SuperSU v2.79 SR3 beta ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133), this already is configured for systemless, and if you're going for SuperSU, that's the version I recommend. Any versions below 2.79 SR3 appear to have created boot issues on Nougat (or required the echo systemless command to work).
ElementalX (1.0.4 stock is what you want) is stable and is essential for rooting. Don't try to root your device without flashing a custom kernel like ElementalX or vegito, else if you try to root the stock Nougat kernel, you'll likely trip anti-root kit/anti-rooting security (dm-verity, I recall?) and will prevent your device from booting. By flashing ElementalX or vegito, you'll bypass that security.
A useful checklist to follow is in this guide here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...de-root-moto-g4-plus-supersu-android-t3587918 Having a newer version of TWRP shouldn't matter (and in fact may present less issues). With step 6, you may choose to flash either magisk or SuperSU as mentioned by tywinlannister7 (I've not had experience with phh superuser, so cannot comment). If, at some point in the future, you wish to swap rooting methods, I'd suggest following the recommended unrooting procedure for your existing root manager (e.g. unrooting from the SuperSU app settings, or flashing the magisk uninstaller, check their respective pages on XDA) before changing root managers. I've used the aforementioned checklist to root a XT1642 on Nougat without issue.
As for downgrading your system to Marshmallow if you so choose, that is possible. Verify the MM firmware you need (a selection for XT1644, retus channel devices, is here https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/athene/official/RETUS/) and use that firmware with a guide like this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/guide-downgrade-to-marshmallow-nougat-t3515961 If you're using fastboot rather than mfastboot, replace mfastboot in the provided script with fastboot.
EDIT - no worries @pastorbob62 - good to have another member verifying information

NO! NO! NO! Do not use the systemless root method. That is for Marshmallow ONLY!. You will not be able to boot into the system after trying that and you may have to go all of the way back to flashing stock from fastboot to fix it.
ElementX-G4 kernel plays well with Nougat stock. I ran it with stock Nougat for a couple of weeks on my XT1625 without any major issues. So flash it from TWRP. Be sure you have the correct version. Then boot to system to check it out. Next reboot to TWRP and flash SuperSU 2.79. Boot back to the system. It will probably boot a couple of times before the system comes up. Don't panic. You should be good to go.

Got it figured out. Backing up my boot.img via TWRP ensures my stock kernel is safe. Already installed elemental X and SuperSU and all went perfectly smooth. Thanks again for the links.

Hey guys... I know I am late to the thread but if you see this, can you inform me how can I receive updates afterwards? I currently have twrp with elementx kernel and Magisk. And there is a security patch out for the phone. How can I install that?

Generally you'd have to revert back to a clean stock ROM, no TWRP, no ElementalX, no magisk. The stock ROM also needs to be in a read only state (no modifications allowed in TWRP) and cannot be debloated (OEM partition needs to be untouched).
You could revert back to a TWRP backup made before you flashed ElementalX, provided you did not let TWRP make modifications. You'd also have to find a stock recovery (if you flashed TWRP), and restore a stock logo.bin as well if you flashed a custom logo.bin to hide the bootloader warning. Then, you should be able to apply OTA/security updates. Attempts to apply OTA updates with TWRP on your device will likely fail and leave you in a soft bootloop unless you boot via the bootloader. You could try this to break the bootloop: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/help/troubleshooting-twrp-boot-loop-ota-t3714325
The easiest and safest method I've found is to re-flash the stock ROM you have. Ensure this is the same firmware as you currently have and the latest firmware that you've flashed onto your device (don't downgrade your firmware if possible). You can re-flash without erasing your data by omitting the fastboot erase userdata command. However, I would recommend you back up your device anyway (e.g. in TWRP) and any important files, as although this procedure should not affect your data with that command omitted, any firmware flash has the possibility of affecting your device stability. That may require a factory reset/device wipe to fix. Backing up your data should be standard policy when it comes to flashing anything affecting your device's system/underlying firmware.
After re-flashing the stock ROM, you should be able to apply the OTA update.
Thanks a lot for the detailed answer. I really appreciate people like you. [emoji3]

ZE520KL how to inatall Magisk and problem with updates

Hi all
I have ze520kl updated to oreo via ota update. Then I unlocked bootloader with official asus app.Now I want to know how to install Magisk without Twrp recovery. And what about future updates of fw? How to install it on my phone when I will have unlocked bootloader with official app, stock recovery and rooted with Magisk?

In order to root your device, you need to flash TWRP .
Future ASUS firmware will be posted on ASUS website & you need to install the new update via STOCK RECOVERY

You need stock bootloader to install OTA updates [RECOMMENDED]
(I found a thread to flash OTA's using TWRP by flashing no-verity but I am not sure that it will work on TWRP 3.2.1)
I am not really sure about the Magisk Manager (I'm still new to Magisk)

When the new update released just flash it via twrp and reflash magisk, anything will okay. And the option patch boot.img it really not work since the oreo rom, you will get error while patching boot and installing module magisk.
Which unlock tool did you use?
The nougat one unlocked oreo too? Great!!!!
This weekend, I try Oreo stock with Magisk, and Titanium Backup can't restore apps+data. I thinking Magisk issue and I return to LOS14 because I need my phone with my data.

I used tool for nougat from Asus website. So what is The best way for root this phone and make future updates?
I would like to finally know how it is with these updates. Unlocked the bootloader with the official application I would like to be able to upload updates. If I download TWRP and root my phone, I will be able to upload updates from Asus (the whole software file). Will the phone detect this file and update the system as it used to do? Will I have to upload it via TWRP? If by TWRP is how to do it step by step? dm-verity file needed? Is it possible to root my phone without uploading TWRP? Patching the boot.img oreo file with the Magisk manager does not work. Or give up magisk and upload supersu? Could anyone write instructions on how to proceed to root and upload system updates as they will be released by the manufacturer in the future? There are no step by step solution on this forum that can help me finally understand my problem and doubts

As you officially unlocked the BL, you will not get the ota notification in the future but you can download the full firmware zip from asus website and flash it normally ( you should be on the full stock recovery and boot to flash the ota or the firmware zip and remove magisk before flashing then re-flash it again after the update ). When you rooted your phone and don't have the stock recovery and boot images needed for flashing the updates, you can flash the RAW firmware and you will getback to full stock again without losing your data.

if you want to use stock recovery, you don't need magisk or the no-verity file. If you want to use twrp, because it works for the 100th time, you will need either.
Ktl20, you will not brick your phone trying either method, so why don't you experiment and find out for yourself, that's the best way to learn.

So i just got the phone three days ago but maybe try rebooting your phone to TWRP or if you don't have it installed on your recovery go to a computer and launch ADB, what you want to do is temp boot into TWRP then sideload Magisk again.
To make things easier:
=============================
1. Boot into TWRP (Either through recovery or ADB)
2. Get your yourself the stock boot.img to clear things up on Magisk's end.
3. Sideload your Magisk zip.
4. Clear cache and dalvik cache
5. Reboot the phone.
If you don't flash a stock.img of the current OOS you are on safetynet may fail but reinstalling Magisk through TWRP should fix your safetynet issue. As far as WIFI goes try flashing the modem.img file for your current OOS version, this might do the trick but i am not so sure as this is my first time using a oneplus device.
Hope i have helped you out. Don't take OTAs, they break root as an OTA is just for stock OOS with no root so there is no support for rooted devices when it comes to these updates.
Edit: Try this if it doesn't work https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/9-0-7-patched-magisk-boot-img-t3875498

I uninstalled magisk, did the regular OTA update, do not reboot, then install Magisk again on the inactive slot.
Ok fixed the problem I was having.. I had to do a complete factory wipe after installing Magisk. It's now working and I am using Oneplus Switch to restore my data backup now.

Let's see if we can help you But first, just an FYI, you have posted in the wrong section, you should have posted in the Question and Answer section....
Moving on, what version of TWRP did you flash?
follow the TWRP guide here and use Magisk version 18.0
TWRP https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...overy-unofficial-twrp-touch-recovery-t3861482
Magisk https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Download the Stable version. Then you should be fine.

And i flashed fajita version.
You need to fastboot boot twrp image and then sideload twrp installer, then magisk 18 on top of that.

I did that in the first place. As i said i had root on the previous version. But after update. I just couldn't find magisk file in twrp recovery mode to flash it for root.

Updating removes root, so you have to do it all over again. It's what has to be done with A/B partitions (unless flashing full update from twrp or going the uninstall/restore images magisk-flash to other slot route).

Then tell me what to do all over again?
Why don't you just download Magisk.zip again. Boot back to TWRP and flash

I just can't find any zip file in twrp! That's the issue.

You mean like unlock bootloader again? And then twrp and magisk?

Are you serious right now? Your can't find it either because your haven't downloaded it or haven't looked in the right directory for the zip. Download magisk boot into TWRP choose install navigate to the directory the zip is stored in then choose it and swipe to flash. And FYI anything you download normally goes to the Download folder.
Use one of the rooting tools it will do all for you, more simple.
9.0.11 don't prevent any method of rooting, it's in your side that something is wrong

Which tool specifically?
Man, stop, I don't know, try them all

updating to latest OTA 11.0.1.1.IN11AA

I have unlocked bootloader + root with magisk. Is there anything special I need to do before letting the OTA update? What about afterwards, will I need to re root?
Sorry if this question was already asked and answered- I couldn't find anything. Just want to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid, thanks in advance.
For clarity I'm on the latest magisk canary and am using a U.S. phone.

If you're on ob3 I read that it needs to wipe, if you're on 11.0.0 stable then just update, don't reboot, disable magisk modules, patch after OTA in magisk and that's it

Sounds easy enough. Should I also worry about flashing back to stock kernel as well?

If you update then the kernel gets done too.
If you have modules installed disable them first.
You'll be fine.
PS: so are you on ob3 or 11 stable?
I'm rooted with an unlocked bootloader on 11.IN11AA (Global). How do I perform a local upgrade without the OTA file to put into the root folder? It seems like the Global version of the OTA file is nowhere to be found and I can't download it via System Update since it fails due to root. Do we need to just wait for the 11.0.1.1.IN11AA OTA zip file to be posted? Thanks in advance.
Yes, looks like we are in waiting mode for it to show up...

Stable. Haven't done the update yet because I'm getting "installation problem" when I try to download OTA. Oxygen updater not working either. Not sure what's up lol but I'm over it. Guess I gotta go find the file and install locally.

You'd have to install locally even with oxygen updater.

Yea I guess that's why Oxygen Updater isn't showing anything new for me. Once it shows up on the internet, I'm sure the OU app will refresh and show an available update.

For those with trouble installing 11.0.1.1 AA update with root as Google server only pushed incremental OTA at the moment.
1. Flash your current version unpatched boot.img into both slots in fastboot
2. Use the following command to boot from a patched boot, but not modifying the partitions. (fastboot boot patched.img)
3. Update with system updater with incremental ota.
4. Don't reboot, but flash the magisk with magisk app to the inactive slot.
5. Reboot and done.

I just updated and kept root. I used to use this method on my Pixel 2 XL when I didn't want to flash the images, or was away from my PC.
Method: https://tinyurl.com/y2bxeuq5
The link should work now.
Disregard the TWRP part (skip Step 4....go from Step 3 to Step 5).

Thanks for these steps, it worked for me. After I flashed Magisk via the Magisk App to the inactive slot, I rebooted and had the latest version installed with root preserved. :highfive:
After I did it I'm getting the com.android.phone stopping and my Sims aren't recognized. I cleared cache, phone and SIM toolkit but didn't work. Grrrrr
I'm a rooted global user and update has never showed until today. It was only 405mb and Google play services was showing the update. Oxygen updater shows nothing and system update shows nothing. I'm gonna wait to see what happens since it's not a full update
Same here global 406 mb ota. It's like not recognizing we have root...

^^^^^^This -- easiest and fastest root upgrade I have ever done on any device.
Magisk is now built to do it this way.

This worked for me as well taking the actual partial OTA update from system update and going through the steps in Magisk.
A little nerve wracking considering the many times trying to update has failed on my last couple OP devices, but at least this time, it worked.
Thanks.
anyone have a patched magisk boot for IN2025?
I did the steps of flashing the stock boot.img, then booting the patched img, installed the OTA, used magisk to patch before reboot, but when it rebooted it said installation failed, and i was unable to access magisk after that as it was on the wrong slot... I had to apply the OTA update again, and now am stick without root
IN short, need either a stock IN2025 boot image to patch myself, or a magisk patched one...
TIA
