This or... - ZTE Nubia Z17 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, this phone seems really appealing but I'm struggling to find reliable reviews of it. Currently undecided between this and that Oneplus 5... Anyone in a similar situation or have an opinion to share?

Well - in terms of specs this phone is really appealing, but don't know if they are gonna release a global version of the device.

I am in the same situation
regarding the love that the rom creators will bring in, i think that the oneplus will be the better choice, but i like the nubia and it's specs.
Plus, the price is unbeatable.

Haha yeah, I don't think there'll be much ROM support for the Nubia Z17, but already a few weeks or so after release they've pushed out a new OTA update, as well as updates for other phones. Hopefully they'll be well supported with Android O :/
I live in the UK so will have to import this model anyway, and found a great deal on:
http://www.geekbuying.com/item/ZTE-Nubia-Z17-5-5-Inch-6GB-64GB-Smartphone---Black-380167.html
I used the Honey extension on Chrome and that saved me £20! It doesn't tell me what the code is unfortunately, so can't post it here for any that are interested.
I checked the bands/frequencies and it covers the UK ones I require, and it's a 'worldwide' model. It just seems a bit strange to me that even on the Nubia/ZTE site it's not on there. But I'm gonna go for it...

Plus those edge control gestures seem to actually be loads better than the Samsung and HTC U11 ones... Correct me if I'm wrong though!

£350 (not £20 in the end, just £10)

I have one and it's beautiful. Build and feel of the device is amazing. Problem is there is no Google Play/Framework support yet and no root or TWRP. So I'm pretty much waiting. I hear some suppliers are shipping them with global ROM's with Google support.
If anyone can link me to a Global ROM it would be greatly appreciated. Can't wait to fully utilize this beast!

So how is the camera quality?

Beat review and camera samples I could find:
https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/06/...rt-features-amazing-camera-makes-worth-money/
I've also seen comparisons between this, Xiaomi Mi6 and Huawei P10 cameras where this seems to outperform them

Haven't done any comprehensive testing with it yet. But from my short time with it, it's really nice and has some cool features. I always enjoy Nubia's camera software suite.

Does anyone think it's weird that there aren't many reviews and basically no xda forum on the Z17? Is it just because it's mainly confined to China for now (despite there being a global version available to buy/import online)? Kinda starting to question my purchase now XD

It's still a very new phone. Forum pages on here take a while to spin up for rare Chinese phones. Things will slowly begin to develop and trickle in.

Thank you for your translation

This phone goes toe to toe with OP5 but better priced. If kernel sources are made available then we'll see development for sure.

I have a question?

I'm seriously thinking of buying one of these with the "1.7GHz octa-core Cortex-A7 CPU; 2 GB of RAM" version.
I'm not real happy and the operating system but I have read that lollipop has been installed and there are instruction for doing so.
However it did not state which version it was installed on?
Will it work on all versions?
Thanks...

I have that feature but I did not notice it at the top of the page.
I like these roms better better
The obstacle against better ROM's is the lack of the kernel source.
This why developers here don't do much with Miui.
Don't see this changing, so just have to find ROM's elsewhere.

I have the Redmi Note 1W. It was sent to me by a friend in Malaysia.
Can only get 3G as it lacks the bands for LTE.
There is a newer version out for 4G/LTE.
Not sure if it has the bands necessary for the U.S. since it is sold in Asia
and Europe.

Is the OP2 not compatible with Marshmellow?

I mean, whats the hold up OP?
OP2 certainly is compatible with Marshmallow , you can already see many MM based ROMs :what::what:

Yeah exactly. OOS is near stock. Moto g3 is running MM but we're still waiting :/ and should probably wait till the last day of the Q1. Or probably they'll miss even that date and come up with an apology letter like they always do :/

I am pretty sure drivers are written usually by the hardware makers, so that'd be Qualcomm for the SoC or whoever made the fingerprint sensor, camera, other sensors etc. Skins - I ain't seen much skinning by OPO except for changing the dark mode and colour of stuff when in dark mode. Security - this is why they need to release latest android, because google is fixing 100's of issues.
Anyway I am shocked that even the slow manufacturers like LG have upped their game and have 6.0 and Samsung has leaked theirs too. I usually wouldn't care but custom ROMs not that attractive without Fingerprint sensor and Laser AF.

Cyanogenmod 13 for Huawei Mate 8

Hey, everyone.
I bought my Mate 8 about two weeks ago. After my personal HTC-Desaster over the last year, i couldn't be happier.
The only thing, that keeps me wondering, is this current OS...
Sooooo, i'm saying it out loud to start the discussion ...
Does anyone know, if and when cm13 for the Mate 8 will be released?
Don't be so much disappointed, if answer will be "never" ))

Maybe, they will change their mind? I mean so many producers first said, they would never share the code, and suddenly they did.
I guess this is the dividing line...
I'm usually the one recommending phones to people and this phone is a great one, however, if there is no potential to get any AOSP/CM based ROMs on this device, then it is doomed from my recommendation on a large scale.
We should start a petition to change this, but I don't know who will join and if we will be loud enough to get them to listen.
What is the main blocker in this? Source code, vendor blobs, proprietary something-er-other? Is the Kirin impossible to get working because of proprietary drivers? Sounds like we just need more higher level devs to crack this? Maybe we can start a bounty to buy a phone for a dev that has a track record of cracking this kind if issue? Just brainstorming.

I agree. On my last phone, HTC One M8, I have used CM for maybe a week TOTAL in 21 months. I have also used Google Play Edition ROM for maybe 2 months. I did not mind Sense ROMs as the performance was best with these, and they had good features as well.

Damn..
Have used CM13 on Samsung S4. Rom: great. Camera: worse.
Have used CM13 on LG G3. Rom: great. Camera: worse.
Have used CM13 on LG G4. Rom: great. Camera: worse.
Camera drivers are also often propietary. So if (will probably never happen) CM13 becomes a possibility for the Mate 8 there is always that issue as well.
I'd rather run a custom stock Rom with proper camera than an AOSP one without. And the Mate 8 is fast enough to be a great device, when using another launcher like Nova or Apex for example.
As always: YMMV, of course

[Q] Will you buy it?

This seems to have the best specifications of Samsung and HTC combined, additionally offering dual sim. For that price i can live just fine with a non-changable battery.
Seems like a very nice device. If it will be available in europe, and there's good support for custom roms here on xda, then it would be an alternative to Oneplus 3 for me.
I'm definitely getting this phone when it comes out. Can't wait to get rid of my G5. The thermal mitigation screen dim is killing me!

Updates are important, espacially if there is barely Custom Rom support. I'm afraid of latter, on the other hand the Snapdragon SoC makes it easier. Maybe this will be my first try to port a Custom Rom.
I'm sure it will be possible to unlock the bootloader, even though that's just my feeling.

In my opinion force touch is absolutely useless. At the moment we have 3 options, single tap, double tap and long click, and if you want even more, triple tap, etc. Why would you need force touch? That's just a desperate attempt for innovation.
At the moment the ZTE Axon 7 is higher ranked for me that the OnePlus 3, especially because of the front facing speakers! If you had front facing speakers before, you want nothing else.

Well in this point I disagree with you. Force touch could and should be a kind of new interaction. It´s a question of implementation. You´re totally right for the existing "gestures" but I think in combination of this we´ve got new possibilities. There´s a lot of potential. But pls note - I don´t see the the advantage only on my side - I´m working with handicapped youngsters - and by some clients the force touch engine might be a positive progress
Front facing speakers... Meh.... I never used it BUT! The audio-chips are totally great!!! I´m a little bit audiophil. And I think the upgrade from my OP1 should be working "nice" for my headphones - specifically for my B&W P5 wireless

You're right, back to topic. I'm pretty sure I'll buy it. The only tiny flaw for me is the protruding camera lens. Unfortunately that's standard nowadays. But apart from this it's almost perfect in my opinion.

Could this be real? Official Oreo for the M9

I'm not rooting my M9 anymore. The phone works just fine and I'm known to stuff things up by rooting, after all I don't plan on ever changing rom, Nova launcher does what I need, and as for adds.....oh well.

I love rooting just to install sun dreams SRom...he's now not doing them anymore so that combined with the fact I want Oreo and the M9 is so wonderfully fast might stop me.
I will certainly wait until the Oreo update....to be fair though my favorite so far has been Jellybean!! Nougat is dull, I can't stand the Sense icons...thank goodness for the Theme app.

Too bad substratum doesn't really work on this phone. Or was it just me?

Guys, please don't put your hopes too high and take this rumor* with not only a grain but two hands full of salt.
HTC (like all big OEMs) officially supports its devices for 24 months after their market release. The M9 is getting three years old, soon. In other words, it's more than unlikely that HTC will provide any further updates for the M9. Especially since the EOL phase got reached almost a year ago and not just recently.
In addition, why should a carrier branded device get a major android update the unbranded European version or the dev edition doesn't get? Don't forget that these two versions normally got their updates around 3 months before the carrier branded ones. If the Optus variant really got android 8 at then end of February or the beginning of March then SKU 401 and 617 would already be running this newer version since somewhen between late December and mid-January.
Disclaimer: Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the M9 getting another major update. However, chances are more than high that the whole thing is just a canard.
* Since this info is nothing more than that.
If a specific career device gets an update, would it be possible for all other variants to run it (ported version , may be?)?
Or, would it be possible to port it to other varriants?

It depends. Theoretically, it should be possible, but some carrier specific feature might not work for other carrier. That is, if the ROM is still compatible with the old firmware.

I don't know, I don't use this app and I'm not the rom developer.
Test, sorry please ignore this.

In general term yes.
Note that carrier specific would sometimes means ril+modem. So in such cases, the port could work but leaving phone and data capability out.
