Asus Zenphone 5 - update to latest official rom - Zenfone 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to everyone.
I would kindly ask for your help.
A friend of mine has a zenphone 5. She is experiencing various problems with the playstore synching, viber synching etc and getting errors with play services.
The phone is on android Kit Kat (4.4.2 if I recall correctly).
As I am more experienced with phones, she asked to me to have a look at it and see what can be done.
I do not want to root the phone and/or install an unofficial rom (like lineage) as I will not be the one using the phone, and my friend is completely unaware of what to do in case there is a problem with the phone.
So my best thing would be to perform a backup, then wipe all data and finally update the firmware to the latest official available version.
As I never had an asus phone before (I am more experienced in rooting/updating unofficial roms etc to sony and samsung phones) I kindly ask for your help.
The phone is a zenphone 5 T00F has a WW sku. I attach a screenshot of the firmware version. I found on asus website and downloaded the latest firmware UL-ASUS_T00F-WW-2.22.40.540-user.
How do I install it?
Also, I believe that there is also a lollipop official update for this phone? Where can I find it and how can I Install it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanx.

Hello , you want the phone to be in stock rom , right ? @madvinegar
1) update to latest kitkat version by ota updates . Latest kitkat version is 2.22.40.540
2) if you want to update to android l then after updating to latest kitkat just place the file (rom update zip ) into internal storage ( not inside any folder just in the internal storage ) . A pop up will come just tap it the update will be done .
3) But if pop up does not come then just reboot your phone once . The latest version of lollipop which you need to download is 3.24.40.87
Alternatively you can sideload the official firmware , if you know how to  just make sure you download the rom as per your device sku

Yes you are right. I had to scroll further down.
One odd thing happened.
As you have seen in the screenshot I uploaded in my 1st post, the SKU of the phone seems to be WW.
So I downloaded the update for WW, but when I tried to apply it, I got an error saying that the update failed. I think the reason was that the SKU found on the phone was "CUCC". How can this be...?
In any case I am downloading now the firmware update 2.22.40.540 for CUCC and I will try again. What is the difference between CUCC and WW...?
Also, I don't see that there is a lollipop update for CUCC. Can I use the SKU of another firmware? i.e. WW?

So in my case I will have to download and install first the WW 1.14 (not the CN 1.14) since my formware now is the ASUS_T00F_WW_user_1.13.40.8_20140516_17063.
Correct?

So, I finally managed to solve the problem and update the zenphone 5 to lollipop.
My problem was the recovery image which was either faulty and/or different version from the firmware. To be precise, the recovery was CUCC, while the firmware was WW.
So, to solve the problem I did the following:
1. Using fastboot, I flashed the latest recovery image from WW 2.22.40.540
2. Again using fastboot, I flashed the latest fastboot image from WW 2.22.40.540.
3. Then using ADB I flashed the latest firmware WW 2.22.40.540
So, after successfully flashing the latest kitkat firmware WW 2.22.40.540, then I downloaded the latest lollipop firmware WW 3.24.40.87, placed the zip file inside the internal storage of the phone and rebooted. After reboot, a notification was waiting for me to update to lollipop. I pressed OK to continue, the phone rebooted, installed the firmware, updated all android apps, and ... voila ... the phone rebooted to Android Lollipop 5.0
@Boomshiva I thank you very much for all your kind help and guidance.

I was trying to sideload the firmware many times, but I was getting an error.
Only after I flashed first the correct recovery image, I managed to sideload the firmware.
All is well now.

I think they rolled out all the OTAs for GB at the same time, I got mine earlier today but didn't notice.
PS: Its my birthday, thank you Motorola!
Just got notified of the pending update on my retGB model, can't do the update just at the moment but fingers crossed it fixes the notification problem some people (and me) have with the phone.
Does any one have the stock 21.11.23 RETGB kitkat recovery to share please? :crying:

When you download the file is a ZIP. I think I must decompress it in order to get the tar.md5 , right?
Which option must I select in Odin? AP with only REboot and Factory reset?
thanks!

I understand that these are stock roms, curious if non-stock roms like CM12 and similar will ever make their way over? My OR rom is awesome, I'm just one of those fools that's constantly customizing for the fun of it.

Rooting my device voids the warranty, but if I have any problems with my device and need support ... Can I flash the stock ROM and take it to customer support?
Without them finding out?

No. You can reinstall stock ROM and have the tablet working as before, but after installing anything custom the efuse will be blown. This means that it can always be detected that custom firmware/kernels/recovery/root/etc have at one point been installed. It also means security containers like Knox will refuse to operate.
I tried out the October (J) release for T815 which has been released for DBT (Germany) and a few other places. (link here). PDA version: T815XXU2AOJ4. Included CSCs: BTU (UK), DBT (Germany), ITV (Italy), XEF (France), XEO (Poland). Android 5.0.2. Previously I had the latest release for PHN (Netherlands), which is still T815XXU1AOG9.
Stagefright bug fixed according to Lookout. Not fixed according to Trustable.
New app icons
Still no multi-user
For DBT, there are four German bloatware apps included. All four can be uninstalled without root.
No Camera2 API
Dialer doesn't accept the secret codes like *#06#, *#0*#, *#1234#
Weird display behaviour (flashing, freezing) at very low battery percentages
Warning: you can not fully downgrade from this version "2" firmware to the version "1" firmwares we had until now! You can partially downgrade if you leave the bootloader and the modem as is (so downgrade only PDA and CSC).
This is great. Any chance that someone has the Stock ROM for the SM-T817V? Or does the firmware for the T815 work on this device?
The October T815XXU2AOJ4 version is now also out for T815 in the Netherlands (PHN), which is bloatfree. No other CSCs included. Link here. The dialer accepts the secret codes like "*#1234#" again. Otherwise the experience is the same. Again, you can't downgrade from this version.
Can the 5.1.1 update be flashed on any SM-T810?
I purchased one in Australia and when I tried to follow the instructions and flash with ODIN I get an error SW REV CHECK FAIL DEVICE when using 5.1.1_T810XXU1BOH7_T810XAR1BOH7_XAR.zip
I had and un-rooted device, which just received an update (11/03) to version LMY47X.T710XXU2BOJ1. I ended up rooting and flashing TWRP on it, but I'm having an issue writing to my external SD card. Is there something I can flash to fix this?
Thanks
edit: Google was my friend - manually updated platform.xml.

The T810XXU1BOH7 firmware is very old (H = August I think). Apparently for your device it constitutes a downgrade, which it doesn't allow. Download the most recent firmware to flash. If e.g. you currently have firmware with a "2A" (5.0.2) on your device, you can't flash this "1B" (5.1.1) firmware even though it seems like an upgrade of android, because it is a downgrade of the bootloader. Download firmware with "2B" (5.1.1) in the name and I think it may work.
I don't have the T810, but T815 which is still stuck at 5.0.2...
Is it possible to flash a T710 firmware onto a T715 device? I don't need LTE at all so I don't mind losing it (I have no SIM). I just want to get faster updates because I need multi-user support from 5.1.1.

Zenfone 3 ZE552KL Z012DE Nougat Update?

I have a Zenfone 3 Z012DE and I do not know what firmware to install, since I have seen different models in the roms and otas uploaded to the forum, I do not know how to check the correct model to which my equipment corresponds
Is possible update to Nougat?, not link for my Firmware of my model ...
Edit: ZE552KL (Asus Z012DE)
Thanks
First off, as a new user I am unable to supply you the link directly to the page but I can direct you to where you would find your update:
If you search in Google "Zenfone 3 Z012DE" (Without quotation marks obviously) then the first link should be an Asus page. Once the page opens, you will see a bunch of gallery pictures of your device, near the top right under the search bar you should see Support, click it. Then, go to Driver & Tools, select Android as your OS and a few boxes should appear. On the second box, you will see the latest Nougat update for your device (WW-14.2020.1706.53). If you notice in your screenshot, your software code starts with WW, only download firmwares that start with WW off Asus support page since those are the only ones that will work with your devices. Unfortunately, if your phone works the same way as mine, your build indicates the date 09/09/2016 which means the latest update may not work because it will refuse to update on a build that is older than 01/20/2017 (I think that's the exact date) in which case you will have to download and upgrade each version at a time until you get to the lastest firmware.
To install the updates, copy them over to an SD card from a PC or download it through your phone and make sure you know where to find it on the SD card, boot into recovery and hit update from SD card.

Good afternoon, I can install firmware ww15 (Android 8) ASUS_Z012DE?
At the moment I have the firmware WW_13.20.10.152.
Do I have to install the firmware WW_14.2015.1701.8 and then the WW_14.2020.1706.53?
Or can I move from the WW_13.20.10.152 firmware directly to WW-15.0410.1712.31 or WW-15.0410.1801.40?

Simple Solution is already available .
go to the asus official downloads page - https://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-Max-Pro-M1/HelpDesk_BIOS/
Download the 1.5 GBytes Version WW-15.2016.1808.323 (2018/08/21)

Problems with Moto G5 Plus

I'm worried that I've permanently messed up my phone. I didn't make a backup of my stock firmware when I first flashed Lineage OS, and then I was having issues with that, so now I'm using the stock one again, but it's not official. I used fastboot to flash it and then flashed twrp and magisk. That should of been sufficient to factory reset it right? It just keeps having little problems that it didn't have before, like internet loading things slowly and bugs and crashing apps. The reason I switched off the Lineage OS rom is because it had little problems like that too. I just don't know what to do anymore.

What exactly are your problems? Check the thread of the custom ROM you installed and look for fixes there, maybe you installed an outdated version and your problems have been fixed in the updates. Good luck.

What do you mean with "stock but not official"?
Where did you get it from?
There are some sources for official firmwares signed by Motorola here on XDA so what makes you think the one you use isn't official?
If so that could be for sure the reason for problems for I have to say that I haven't seen unofficial stock ROMs except TWRP flashables (you said you flashed using fastboot so it can't be this) or debloated stock ROMs.

If you can flash the firmware by fastboot it's most likely an official signed firmware that was leaked. To be on the safe side use the firmware found here on XDA like this source:
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/potter/official/RETAIL/
Just make sure to use the same firmware you we're on or a newer one that fits to your region.
I recommend to reflash the latest stock firmware, maybe something went wrong the first time.
And remember to always make a backup before you flash anything that could cause problems.
It the latest stock firmware different from the stock rom I flashed?
You can also try the repair function in Lenovo Moto Smart Assistant app.

Hmm. Now my security updates are failing.

Sure. The firmwares from Moto Smart Assistant are the same like the ones I've posted above, I compared the hash files.
Would be interesting to know what firmware you're on at the moment.
I'm on OPSS28.85-17-2
I thought my firmware was unofficial since it was leaked. Also do you why I can't update?

Any firmware you'll find is leaked even the official ones. Motorola doesn't release any firmwares except the ones you can download with Lenovo Motorola Smart Assistant.
The link I posted https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/potter/official/RETAIL/
contains official firmwares too. The latest one for the US (85-17-4) can be found there too.
What happens exactly when your OTA fails?

- I download the update the update
- It reboots and goes into TWRP for some reason
- I have to manually reboot to system from TWRP
- My phone boots to system and says update unsuccessful
(This is a security update by the way.)

You can't take any system updates when you have TWRP installed!
For OTA you have to be on unrooted full stock ROM incl. stock recovery. This is a very important rule.
So you have to ways to handle this:
- Flash clean stock firmware and apply to the OTA afterwards (if you flash the latest firmware 17.4 you don't need the OTA anymore). You will loose your internal storage data or skip the "erase userdata" command.
Firmware from here: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/potter/official/RETAIL/
- Take a TWRP flashable build but be aware that you can't take OTA updates at all in the future which is not needed as the firmwares are up to date.
