What is the best Android 4 rom? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i always use old android 4 roms for my smartphones, because the roms have been long updated and the 4. ist much faster because it has not this encryption. (my old s4 is in 50% of the opertaions i use faster). But which rom is the best? I want to have xposed and viper sound mod. the shohat rom has it included, but the comments was not so good with the performance and battery life. what do you recommend me?

If you mean KitKat (android 4.4) ROMs, the last one I've used was omega ROM.
However, I'd highly recommend to jump straight to Android 6.0 marshmallow for general battery + performance improvements (not to mention much improved security).

Android 4 is outdated by a long mile. At least think about stock touchwiz. Your best bet for Android 4 would be the now-defunct CM11 or PAC or even some older versions of CosmicOS (if they exist, haven't looked). Other than that, no way KK ROMs would be in development in 2017.

ROM Advice

Hi All,
I have had my Galaxy S 4 (I9505) for a while now but it is still running android 4.3.
I was hoping to update it to 5.0.1 but when I plugged it into my PC, Kies said 'This device is unsupported'
I want to flash a new rom onto it (I have done this in the past with a samsung tablet)
I was just wanting some feedback as to what is regarded as a good rom for it these days. Should I go a standard stock rom from sammobile or are there custom roms out there that perform better?
Thanks for any help and advice.
Daniel
Custom roms give you more performance. Stock roms tend to lag here and there, from what I saw in rom reviews.
If you want a minimalist rom, go for CM12 or Slim roms. They have very few features.
If you want lots of features, go for AICP or Resurrection Remix. These two combine the most popular features from other roms (I personally use Resurrection Remix).
And there are the GPE roms. I don't know how GPE 5.1 is, but on 5.0 the rom was rock solid and everything worked.
I can't say anythinv about stock touchwiz because, since I changed I never went back

Try a custom S6 Touchwiz ROM for your phone model - you'll be pleasantly surprised by the new look, feel and performance. I know I am!
I tried CM but not such a big fan... Experiment a bit until you find what you were ALWAYS looking for!
You try to consider CM 12.1 or GPE Roms. The major disadvantage is the camera quality and some multitasking features on TW, but it's hella fast and smooth.

Roms
I would recommend Cyanogenmod but sometimes it comes with some problems. Check out first which is the stable version for s4.
Also, I would recommend the WickedRom which is great and great performance. And the WanamLite Rom is amazing if you would like to tune your mobile , for example gpu or cpu in higher frequencies or even set custom gestures and etc.( but remember to be careful with those why you might break your phone

it's like you have already a custom rom, or a rooted & modified stock rom !.

go for Resurrection Remix like said: GDReaper, or may be BlissPOP ( with terrible battery drain for me).
I tried just the straight CM 12 rom and it was okay, but once I put on the one of the Optimized CM 12.1 roms I got better battery life and faster performance, but also lost a few features, got a few bugs, but so far so good. It really depends what you want.
If you are willing to have a few crashes, bugs you can put on the newest rom builds, but if you want stable, then going for the older well established ones may be a better option.

I have to correct you here buddy It's almost always better to pick the latest CM build. Because it's a work in progress, every new build has a lot fixes.
I'm curious though to what bugs you are referring to. I used it pretty long and I found it almost to be bugfree. Besides the obvious difficulty's with bluetooth.

Hey Lenny, the official CM builds I have never had an issue with (except nightlies of course) however when we get into the custom ROM world such as Slimroms, modified CM builds etc I do tend to hit a few bugs, such as crashes of apps, however often those builds then become stable.
Hope that makes more sense?
The only good advice is to just use stock roms. It's stable, no bugs, no issues. The only thing that pisses you off is the laggggggg!

Best Rom (opinion )

Hey
I have a G900F and I'm wondering wich rom you consider to be the best and why. I have stock marshmallow and it's been laggy lately. I would like to give a try to a custom ROM. I'm interested in lineage os and resurrection remix but I'm not sure if I should use any of them since I read on the forum that both have some sort of problem with gapps. Can you help?
Tell me if it's safe to install any of the above or if you can recommend another.
Thanks

Welcome to the S5 community @balangmusic,
Have a look at this thread for some ROM suggestions:
Which ROM do you like most?
RR 5.7.4 is a popular choice and I highly recommend using it. It is a little outdated in terms of security updates but it gets the job done and it is feature packed. LineageOS is currently a little buggy with Google Play Services, where your phone would freeze after auto updating.
Saber
or p h oenix rom
general rule - AOSP roms such as the ones you are interested in - can get nougat (which comes with perks such as extra features and extra security), bugs (as stated above) stability and compatibility issues (some have issues with fingerprint and sometimes camera) .
Touchwiz roms (e.g. Omega) - can only get up to marshmallow (or lollipop depending on the rom). more stable
I lean more towards Touchwiz based rom. if i wanted AOSP rom, I would have gotten a Nexus. I'm also not to concerned about what version of android i'm running.
I personally use Xtrestolite which is lollipop, touchwiz based and quite old. However, it's very stable. I'm having no issues.
Why do I use lollipop? - I really like Ktoonsez's Kernel.
In my opinion, I like Xtrestolite, or Alliance (although both are currently unsupported and are lollipop based at latest).
Omega is a Touchwiz based one (and pretty good) that supports Marshmallow now I believe. I reckon you should give that a try if you want a good balance between up-to-dateness, features and stability.
I'll post any links is you are interested in any of these and want links.
Edit: also very interested to hear about other good roms and people's opinions
Also Red's Revenge seems pretty cool and recent. havent tried it yet though.
Thanks man.
Can you give me links for omega and red's revenge?

Good luck!
Try them out and let us know how you go.
I have Lineage Os 14.1 on my S5 and it works perfectly, I think this is the best Rom because cyanogenmod turned in Lineage.

There is Poll thread the ranking Roms of S5 AOSP &TW?

Hi
what are the best rom of TW & AOSP Clean roms and which Karnel are recommend ?
I'm about to take 2.5 weeks of trip out of of state and a must have the best and stable with great battrey life + Working GPS .
I'm with PhoeniX ROM V15.0 around 8 months and it's keep stuck...
I want to try aosp or great Tw rom ..
In terms of battery, look at this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/battery-life-screen-off-best-rom-test-t3476406
The above thread is a bit outdated. LOS 14.1 is a little more heavier on battery, but performance is slightly better. There are still bugs that need to be ironed out however (search if required).
GPS wise, anything past android M will give mixed results. Some report the same reliability as M, some have issues. Stock ROM has the best GPS reliability.

What's is your current daily driver? Or what's the best rom for s5 in your opinion

So our galaxy s5 is 4 years old now and it is still the main device of many users as we know there are great roms for this phone now snapdragon and as well as exynos so i want to know what is your current rom and why(post screenshot if you like to)
My daily driver is : dotOS 2.3.1
Why: cause it is fast stable and it's has latest version of Android(oreo) and some of Android P style and theme and the best part of it it doesn't lag no matter what you install
And also used nemsis reborn v5 and it is the best of s8(note7) port
Thanks

I use an LG G6 as my main device, but I use my S5 a lot... and I have to say Resurrection Remix (based on LineageOS/android 8.1.0) is amazing.... (I don''t use data, so I haven't tested that part) The UI is responsive, it runs great, super customizable, love it! (also kinda funny that the S9 doesn't officially have 8.1 yet, but someone made a ROM for 8.1 on the S5 :/)

Thanks for the reply
Yeah rr oreo is great also but they are really slow to bring updates to oreo ( i don't why) but in naught there was a lot of updates
Thanks again
stock rom, very stable, compatible and battery frienldy
My S5 is running still great !
Using it to type this. Running lineage 14.1 updated all the way to 15. Heard it was buggy so i didn't update to Lineage 15
Daily driver till September. Hah it for 3 years
Using almost a month: noise rom v4, sparkplug kernel, magisk manager and s health working great. Having little issues with bluetooth speakers/earpods (need to switch on/off 2 times to listen something), and battery duration it almost a day, with gps and sync turned on. If there any rom to use daily, that is noise rom :good:
How is the battery life compared to stock? Especially screen on time?

use a galaxy a8 as a daily phone and the s5 as a second phone use linage os 15.1 official; the phone is fuido like never before. thank you all for the hard work
For me, it's LineageOS. But I cannot use it due to some strange sound problems, that's why I'm looking for an alternative that has OTA update included.
The stock isn't that good because it's bloated, you cannot do much without root, and if you root the stock rom, you wouldn't be able to install OTA updates, you'll need a computer or something to make it manually, on S5 stock rom you mix the sdcard + manual to get more space. The only 2 things that the stock rom are good for, IMO, it's the battery.. it lasts longer. Also, the camera is better, using any ROM, even with xposed, you can't get much when talking about the camera. The stock will always be better than any available rom.
My daily driver was the "xXx NoLimits" -Rom, which is based on stock.
The main point why it was this rom is the battery drain. LineageOS 14.1 especially 15 has a very high battery drain, so I've downgraded to Stock Rom and was happy
I like it, that LineageOS has a very good performance and clean design, but battery time is everything for me
Another point is the camera, because the camera in LineageOS isn't that good like the stock camera from Samsung-Roms.
LineageOS based roms do have much features and are smaller but at the end the stock rom wins for me :fingers-crossed:
After some trouble and frustration I'll stick with Resurrection Remix 6.1 (Oreo 8.1). It uses much less memory, is stable and fast. Amazing. It feels like I got a brand new phone. The S5 is a decent device. I use it extensively and don't see any reasons why I should buy a newer model.

What's about battery drain?
I've made the experience that the battery life is very bad with Oreo Roms ?
I never liked stock based ROMs so the only ones I've actually used are TouchWiz ones and the best from those is Nemesis Reborn. But recently I decided to go back to stock S5 ROM to get the most out of my device as nothing beats the firmware with which your phone came when new. I'll be buying the Note 10 after the S11 comes out so will stick to my S5 for another 1.5 years, bought it in February 2015.
l have a crDROID 7.1.2 klte v3.8.5 rom on my s5 and it runs great.
lve tried a couple of 8.1 roms but for some reason everytime l turn on or restart
my s5 it takes about 30 seconds for it to get pass the Samsung Galaxy logo
before the boot animation comes on.
l dont know why it does that l'll stick with what works for me....
I use an S5 prime with lineage 14 as a daily driver. I struggled with the battery life for a while until I installed 3c toolbox. It does what it says on the tin.
The built in camera app doesn't work, but there are others that work. I'm not bothered about quality.

Most Stable ROM for SM-T530, aka matisse, aka Galaxy Tab 4 10.1"

Question for those who have been testing ROMs on Matisse (Galaxy Tab 4 10.1" SM-T530). Which ROM is currently most stable for a daily driver?
a) lineage-16.0-20200415-UNOFFICIAL-matissewifi.zip from matteo026
b) lineage-17.1-20200419-UNOFFICIAL-matissewifi-Unsweetened-XDA-BUILD.zip from DJABHipHop
c) lineage_matissewifi-ota-eng.android.zip <-- What exactly is this one? It was in the same directory with other ROMs from DJABHipHop
d) some other ROM
I'm mainly looking for stability (as in, doesn't crash too much) and security (patches for known major vulnerabilities)
Thanks all
j
I also have a SM-T530NU. I've run the Lineage 16 and 17 ROMs. Unfortunately you're going to have to temper your expectations. This is an old tablet. I'm amazed that Android 10 runs on it at all. You're not going to find both stability and recent vulnerability updates. If you want stability, use the old stock ROM. If you want new, the Lineage 17 ROM runs but crashes/reboots far too frequently to use daily.
Try them. Flashing this thing is straightforward.
