Upgrading Nexus 10 running Lollipop - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first post, hope you can help me :- Hope its in the right place
I have just acquired a nice nexus 10 and managed to upgrade it to android to 5.1.1.
I am a complete novice when it comes to anything to do with rooting or custom ROMs and have always been scared to tackle anything like this, but it seems a pity that I am stuck with Lollipop when my phone is showing me the benefits of the latest nougat upgrade.
So do I chicken out again or do I ask for advice from the experts in this forum to hold my hand while i upgrade to nougat ?
I see a post by Trafalgar Square "how to install android 6.0.1 marshmallow" and although I don't understand much ( at the moment ) about what the developer is telling me to do I think that if i could have my hand held with a similar GUIDE for Nougat then I think i would have the guts to have a go. I see a posts by Sooti who is advocating using AOSP [7.1.1_r4] ( Again I am unsure what he is telling me to do ) and without an absolute basic guide I dare not consider that.
So what do your experts recommend that I do ? Can I be helped ? or must I allow the general fear of "bricking" my device to stop me again as it always did before .
Must I be so afraid of bricking it or could I be helped to recover from a bricked device should the worst happen ?

Download the Nexus Root Toolkit by wugfresh. It makes rooting and flashing custom ROMs as well as custom recovery a breeze! Plus if you brick it, it's most likely going to be a soft brick (bootloop) and the Nexus Root Toolkit will easily fix it. (Trust me, I've been there a few times.)
If you'd like Android Marshmallow, I might recommend OmniROM, unless Lineage has fixed the battery drain issue. (CyanogenMod 13 was terrible on battery.)
Lineage 14 can be found around here which is based on Android Nougat. It's supposedly really fast and battery efficient. Though it has some bugs, most notably the camera is disabled because the camera server keeps crashing and kills the battery otherwise from what I understand. So if you don't care about a camera, Nougat is available, otherwise stick with Marshmallow.
Since I use my Nexus 10 for Skyping on occasion, I'm stuck with Marshmallow. If Lineage 13 has fixed the battery drain issues, I'd definitely be interested to know.

Thank You Rochester. As I type this post I have followed your recommendations and managed to root the nexus and installed busybox. I will now follow the next section and decide whether to choose nougat

Aye, no problem! I'm glad I could help, and welcome to the forums!

AgentOrange96,
I Chose the OmniROM route like you. Wugfresh has done a marvellous job with his Toolkit, and I will be saying thanks to him too !!!
I am all up and running now and my experiences with your forum has removed my fear of Custom ROM flashing and Rooting, so much so that my nexus 6P will be rooted and customised next.
Many thanks to you ( and Brandon your Chief Admin ) for welcoming me as a member !!!

Newbye questions

Hi all! I just purchased 4 days ago my nexus 4 16Gb
Im quite happy with it but here are some questions: I'm just asking them because probably someone else has already gone through the same doubts and probably has some more experience: This device's forums have the fame of being more polite and tolerant than some other, so I hope you guys give me some feedback
I come from SGSII - I have ben using CM9 and 10.0 until it got bricked on november 2012
In the moment i received the new phone, i unlocked it, installed CWM Recovery and made a backup of the original ROM, then, installed CM10.1+franco kernel (both nightly)
The questions I have are:
1: Perhaps the low battery life has something to do with the fact that this is my new toy and I cannot stop playing with it, but I'm thinking about trying official ROM+ root.... would this improve the battery life?
2: The camera has been acting weird a couple of times: Once, the image was flickering: a reboot fixed it.... and another time, when i opened the camera app, would get a black screen. Im not very patient.... so I restarted and the problem is gone... Would official ROM fix this?
3: Which features do we have in stock rom that are not present on CM?
4: On stock rom, can you Root/Unroot and then re-lock the phone as if nothing happened? ¿Do you lose data if you do so?
5: There is a lot of confusion about this: When you unlock the phone, the disclaimer says that process "MIGHT" VOID THE WARRANTY..... does it void it or not?, what does that "might" mean?
Overall, the phone is wonderful and I'm really happy, I'm just thinking about testing stock rom but I don't want to lose functionality...
I'm waiting for your advice.
Thanks!!

A Nougat ROM for modest needs?

Hi. I moved to an S5 with PB1 a year and change ago, and just a few weeks ago to QB2. I've been very pleasantly surprised at how much better MM is than LP (battery life, voice commands, a few other things), and it has me pondering whether to go further.
I'm rooted now, see a few threads talking about Nougat, but they still look a little bleeding edgy to me. I'm not a developer and won't be staying at a Holiday Inn tonight. I don't have power needs so don't want to press forward to somewhere that the juice would be worth the squeeze for me. But if the OS in general works much more nicely like the bump I just experienced, I'm interested.
I rooted my phone years ago, while on an s3, because it was getting slow, I wanted to debloat, and there were a few apps I wanted to use for long distance motorcycling that worked better with root for letting me trigger various things to open or close. I stuck with root on the s5 and I still use the apps needing root a bit but haven't been doing as much of that tinkering and customizing as I thought I might. I'm not sure if I care all that much about root anymore, though I've got it. I just want things to work smoothly.
So is there a nice stable Nougat that I can get to without a lot of work to keep it running and workaround glitches?
Yo can only go to Nougat if you have a unlock bootloader. If not, here is the guide.... https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve.../testers-required-easier-root-method-t3561529.
If you have a unlock bootloader, here is one of the best ROM's to install https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...opment/rom-resurrection-remix-n-klte-t3510376 .
You will need Open Gapps with that ROM also.
HolyHog, thanks for your reply. I've got an unlocked bootloader and TWRP recovery on stock MM QB2 c/o this method and jrkruse. I appreciate the caution and the links.
I've seen your various posts pushing Resurrection Remix and know you're a big fan of it. It's right for you. From what I said, do you think it's right for me?

Yes, it is very stable and has many fine tuning tweaks baked right into the settings. I have tried all the available versions and found RR to be the best by far. I do own a copy of Nova Launcher to tweak it even more. I also use Verizon Messages for texting & MS Outlook for emails. Outlook handles multiple email accounts the best for my needs.

How to

fhgfhg
How to root non common phones get a custom recovery and custom rom
Hi guys
It is just recently when I've started learning more and more about the Android and the various things you can do with it. (This can be long so you may just want to skip to the last line) Until recently I've only used my phone only for it's basic functionality.
But I'm nowhere near a developer and I really want to learn more.
I have this device called Infocus M535 Android 6.0 (which is obviously not a popular device I'm sure a lot of you haven't even heard about it). And I just regret buying it. Cause I have tried a lot of rooting method but nothing seems to work for me. I've tried kingoroot, kingroot as well. Then I learned that you don't necessarily need to have root access to install a custom recovery like twrp but then there is no official version of it available. I've seen many people YouTube having twrp on this device, I tried asking them but no response from them.
I cannot even think about getting a custom rom for this thing because I know nobody is working on that. And tbh I don't even care about getting a custom rom. All I need is a way to root this thing.
I know this thing is old and I should get a new device but Please please please help me because I just can't afford getting a new phone.
Any help Will be really appreciated

Debloated & rooted stock ROM ?

Hi everyone,
I'm currently using the S7 edge under superman v2.4.1 (ROm from early 2017) and never uptated it since.
As the battery drain is important now (whereas the battery life is still good) i'd like to install a stockbased ROM under 8.0 version. Are there some ?
By the way, i'd like to know (especially in terms of battery life) it's better to get android 8.0 or ported NFE 9.0 ROM ?
Thanks in advance for the answer :good:
I am an experienced person. those who see me can call me a cow. Or you could say what you're doing here.
Do not use custom rom. It could be information theft or data sale. Not safe. It also damages and exhausts the device. Also the battery runs out faster.
Dont login any bank account in any custom rom.
I know this is the developer platform. But people are bad. The good thing about this place is that you can make your own rom by learning something. Just do it to yourself.
Or;
Always use stock rom.
If you need it, root it, debloat it.
Be conscious. Know what you're doing.
Be aware.

first... you need to update your bootloader and módem.... so flash thru odin a stock firmware then use the latest twrp to hack the recovery and flash any rom avalaible on the development thread...
do that way and it will be fine

I agree that rooting and debloating is the best option due to stability reasons .. but your accusation to the developer community here is totally out of sense ..
Rooting a stock rom or even debloating it requires a custom recovery .. a flashable zip for gaining root access like magix/super su and others WHICH are also coded by the great developers here on xda..
So going with your theory.. EVEN flashing a custom recovery or rooting with a zip will hijack the phone because its also a custom coded program not made by samsung .. and so we should not use them too and use full stock so only samsung and google can spy on us.. lol.. Its hillarious man .. you just contradicted your own statement..
And the amount of spying google and OEMs did and are doing.. outpaces any spying a developer here would put in his rom just to see how your face looks like xD like seriously dude this is xda not pi***e b*y.. devs here are the best people and not some low life hijackers .. if they were .. our phones/data and bank accounts would have been hacked a long time ago because of using their roms/programs ..
Again, this is xda.. no one is allowed to do data stealing here unlike oems and google.. if anyone did they would have got banned already.
And you think only a developer can hack the phone by using/flashing his rom/program ?
Whatsapp hacked phones of millions of users which were on STOCK oem roms due to a critical android OS glitch.. android OS itself needs fixing and devs try to implement more security in this unsecure OS if not much.. if they do anything it is extending the life of a device ditched by the oem a long time ago, providing it with latest android OSes, bugs and security fixes/updates and giving it a new life basically..
BUT yes if you or anyone has the skill to modify a rom or make custom one on their own using the sources, I totally agree with that but accusing the ones who did that much hassle and providing an already cooked rom to general people who don't know a bit about coding is the worst type of offence imo, they need to be appreciated highly for their contributions instead of these old pathetic accusations..
Don't misguide other users here on xda ! If you feel still like your data could be hacked .. stop using internet, phones and computers, don't use android, stop using gps too and build an underground bunker to be most 'secure' in life.. but don't misguide others or accuse developers !
I wouldn't have bothered to write such a long reply if your post wasn't that much misguiding and based on false theories.
Also being 'secure' in 21st century is a hillarious joke really and an eternal illusion to people ; )

MIUI 12 slow as ...

Hello everyone,
I have my redmi note 7 with which I've kept using MIUI since I bought it. But now the android system weights for 9 go. I think it is insane for a phone, correct me if I'm wrong.
The phone is slow and when I try to erase everything et reinstall it. The system is faster but the system is still heavy.
Do you think rooting it can help solve the issue ? Or may those 9 go of system be caused by some viruses ?
Thanksnin advance,

Unlock the bootloader and flash a customer without root. You have a big choice, the most one are very fast and stable
Thank you for your answer.
0) what is the weight of a normal custom system once installed ?
1) Do you mean to flash a rom and still using the original kernel ?
The last time I flashed a system, it was on a Galaxy S2.... Did the things changed ? At that time we had an important risk to brick the phone under gingerbread version of Android (that version had some kind of bug) .
2) Are the risks still high today ?
I looked a bit through the list or roms on xda and the lineageOS seems to come out as the lightest rom.
3) Is there a room that is more stable than the others ?
4) Is there a rom that is kept updated more than the others ?
5) What about the android security updates once a custom rom is installed ?
Sorry that is a lot of questions but I need an update since my galaxy S2
Thanks in advance,

First, when you unlock your bootloader your phone make a factory reset. Then you have the choice which ROM. lingeos, havoc, pixel os are stable and have the last security patch. Then you have the choice with or without gapps (Google apps). In every thread is a how to and the recommend gapps. Orange fox is a very good recovery. And brick risk is small. Sometimes I had a softbrick with testing around kernel and modules, but it easy to fix. Make a backup with the customer recovery before. The weight I don't know in the moment. My daughter change the pattern . In the forum is a old how to unlock and under development is the recovery. You will find it. Have fun

Thank you very much for your answer.
I'll post the comparison of the weight of the system once I'll have installed it.
