GPS issue - possible reason? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi Folks
I am having severe GPS issues with my S7 edge. It just takes a lot of time to see the satellites and use them for getting a fix. Could any of the following be the reason for this
1. Phone has moved from USA to India
2. Firmware of phone has change from 935V to 935U
3. Display/LCD of phone has been changed as the earlier one was cracked.
Could any of this have caused an issue ?

Folks any ideas, i am going crazy with this GPS issue. Will replacing the antenna help ? I have tried all the software solutions, its just not able to see any satellite or takes a good 2 minutes to even see one satellite (based of app GPS essentials)

Sounds like something is blocking the antenna or like you thought it's damaged don't happen to be using a metal case Do you?

No not using any case at all. Looks like i will have to open the back again to see if the antenna is placed properly or probably replace the antenna itself.

ok it's hardware related problem then!
hope you are still under warranty for the repair!!
I just went to Samsung Assistance and they directly ordered a new motherboard because I have had other issues some days ago plus no gps signal.. hope this fixes it entirely!

...and even if the antenna's fix is done, GPS still may have not work properly if weather is worst (ionosphere causes this).
I've seen this post
But It seems that I do not advance to "acquiring..." stage.., seems like i can't even open the driver...i'll try to apply anyway..thanks...
I have same problem as rwainste. But I haven't this problem before than in the service changed display and vibration motor.

Are you sure? Before I sent my acer to service to replace display, GPS fixed after 2-3 minute and worked good. But now after in service replace display, GPS doesn't work.
Apply antenna's fix = lose warranty or no?

If GPS dont work its better to speak with Acer, but if work and just take more time to fix its good idea to make the cut and after that you will lose the warranty
my acer neotouch s200's gps has been malfunctioning recently..
i dropped it once and i think it broke the gps attena... any ideas to fix it or check if its broken?
Read the same antenna modification thread to determine if the antenna is broken.

I don't think dropping will break the antenna, it sticks to the body quite well.

[Q] Nexus 4 GPS not working

So i bought 2 nexus 4's a couple of months ago (cracked digitizers) and replaced the front frame/assembly with some i bought on Ebay.
They work fine except for the GPS. Both the phones are not connecting to the satellites. I downloaded GPS Status and GPS status and tool kit (or something lie that), tried resetting A-GPS downloading GPD data and nothing works.
I use co-pilot offline GPS and the phone is set to devices only to only use the GPS and not data. Co-pilot never connects with gps.
And both GPs status apps are stuck in "looking for GPS location" eternally. With Fix/Sats always staying a 0/0. I use to get 0/26 or something along the lines, but after resetting A-GPS a couple of times it stays at 0/0.
Since both phones present the same symptoms I started suspecting the front frame/assembly and found this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/nexus-4-gps-fixing-screen-replacement-t2895111
I wrapped the digitizer IC in foil like the guy did and it changed nothing. so i want to try and find some copper tape and layer up the contact points on the back cover in case the antennas don't make good contact. Do you think this might be the problem?
Also i flashed CM 10 on one of the phone in case it was an android problem, but i get the same results in CM.
Any ideas? this is the only thing that is not working on the phones and I would really like to get them working.
Thanks!

It seems it is a grounding problem between the frame, the board and the back cover. Mine is still not working but i had a little success with switching the conductive pads from my old frame assembly. But after a while something must have moved because I am not getting any gps lock anymore. I am waiting on some conductive tape to fix this.

Lg spirit h420 gps issue

i have a seriuos issue with this device
3 brand new devices all having the same problem with GPS.
it doesn't connect even for a second
i open gps status and toolbox, it recognizes 12 satellites but can't fixate on any of them.
changed gps.conf to the proper continent and country, still nothing.
could this be bad gps module on all of them?
version is v10a-eur-xx
Any, and I mean ANY Mediatek chipsed based phone has issues with GPS, at least in Europe.
This is the sole reason I avoid Mediatek like the plague.
Just Google "Mediatek GPS problem". There are possible fixes, but you have to try them out yourself.
I have the same problema whith my LG H420...
How can i fix it ?
I had the same problem minutes ago. The views may come from a-gps sinse it didin't detect any signal. The problem is that the 3 screws on the bottom of the phone, where the gps antenna is, get loose. I have tighten the screws and... it worked. Now it find singal and fix on sattelites indoor and outdoor.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67805410&postcount=1522
Worked for me, on H440N.
When I Lollipop GPS was wrong , since I upgraded to MM GPS has improved a lot , however, often use the app " GPS Connected" to fix in a stable satellites
I tried everything but it does not set the satélites !
3 screws were tight !
But even then I squeezed more !
what can I do ?? :crying: :crying:
I have tried "EPO Tools free" by eben80 and the connection and stability of GPS is better
Rats, I have the same issue with my h440n ... it used to work now and then before ... like half the time. Recently it sorta worked 1 out of 10 times and now it seems dead completely. Maybe that's due to the fact that I dropped it seriously multiple times and recently even cracked the digitizer big time. I'm NOT with Mediatek so I should be fine, but I'm not. Has anyone else with the h440n had this issue and resolved it successfully? I'm trying to find sth on ebay but other than this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Loud-Spea...478333?hash=item25a70da17d:g:dRAAAOSwv0tVZK2P
I cannot find anything else as a spare part. Not even sure if that one includes a gps module ... just says speaker and antenna ...

The trick with tightening the bottom 3 screws, close to the speaker, actually DID help me. I tightened them quite a bit and that seems to have resolved the issue for now. Big ups to whoever it was that came up with this super easy fix and damn LG ... poor build quality, still an ok phone though, for the bucks.
EDIT: After some testing - the fix worked, as I said, but GPS signal is still somewhat poor. It is enough to get you from point A to B, in a way, but the signal keeps on dropping. It simply won't lock to any satellite gps, constantly loses connection and reconnects again, and then the same again. I've read there are some apps that can help with that. Will try out some. If anyone has a solid one that fixes this, do mention it.
We need to fix it soon, or we forget Pokemon Go!

Sony Xperia Z3C GPS FIX - an Hardware problem

Hi all,
during these months I have had a lot of problems with GPS Fix with my Z3C. These problems occurred after the update to 6.0.1 and I thought that It was a software issue.
In my case, GPS works well after upgrade but It degraded little by little. Applications like GPS Status reported a very very low satellite signal.
Reading every possible forum, I found some guys that explain how to "solve" the problem plugging the usb and powering the phone. An other post specified that the solution was not the "powering" and the fix become better if you lightly pulling the usb connector to you... and It was true! So the problem was not software.
So I opened the phone, disassembled the mainboard from the chassis and tryed to understand what part was involved in the "usb pulling solution".
I found that many connectors (like a little pin) were connected to some particular parts to the chassis (as if it were used as antenna).
In this photo you can see where the mainboard connectors impact on the chassis.
(Sorry the forum prevent me to post link or image)
And this is the specific connector involved in "usb pulling solution"
(Sorry the forum prevent me to post link or image)
It seem that this connector was linked in the edge of connection area, not in the middle as the other connector.
So I gently bent the connector upward and reassembled the phone.
After that, the GPS Status reported a signal very high. Never seen a signal so hight before!
The fix was very fast and the accuracy was constantly under 3mt
I'm not an expert, I'm only a normal user. I hope that this thread can help some other like me that need GPS works very well for run, drive and play.
Thank you for this post - I've been fighting with my GPS for months and am about ready to open up the phone too. Any chance you could post the images externally somehow? It would make this a lot easier to follow for me.

I'm trying to post images but the forum reply me in this way:
"To prevent spam on the XDA forums, ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages. After approximately 10 posts, you will be able to post outside links. Thank you for understanding!"
I'm asking to the moderatos if is possible to unlock me.
I will let you know
Anyway... start watching "sony z3 compact disassembly" on youtube. You need some tool to do this without destroy the phone. But trust me, is not so difficult. In particular, take care about the battery door opening.

I've already disassembled a plenty of Sony phones (from Xperia X10 pretty much to every single later Sony phone that was available in Poland) and the issue with bent connectors is very very common. I also had this problem in my Xperia PLAY where my WiFi and cellular network connectors were bent and were linked on the edges of the plates.

Do you have a connectors map?
Hell. I had the same problem : suddenly the GPS signal became very weak, almost unable to catch any satellites and degrading over time, so since I still had 1 month warranty I sent it to the repair center and they changed my PBA (which is the motherboard, I believe.) It is now working like a champ again. If I were to get the problem back in a few month, after my warranty expiration, I'll definitively try to do what you did.
Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, no... but I recommend visiting iFixit site where some of the phones are nicely described.
Thanks a milion gepp81!
I ve ordered some replacement parts and tools and I will try to resurrect my z3 gps.

Can anyone confirm this please? It looks weird to me. According to service manual all antenna connectors are on secondary side of mainboard (accesibble without removing battery, just after opening rear cover and removing that frame around, which has 4 screws, if I remember correctly).
It works

It works. All the connectors are on one side of the motherboard (not the battery side). The picture gepp81 posted shows the antenna area where the connectors connect to, so not the actual gps connector.
Thanks a lot!
I had absolutely no GPS signal.
After trying every software tweak / wipe / rom.... (I was hopping it was a software issue) I finally tried your solution, straighten all the little contacts, and now my GPS has a wonderful signal!!!
I destroyed my back cover, but it doesn't matter I prefer that than no GPS
Wow, thank you. I can also confirm this. Despite that official service manual says something different.
Previously zero signal at all (23 satellites with 0 SNR), sometime 1 very weak satellite. Now 9 fixed, another 6 visible. Those 15 doesn't have very strong signal, but it's usable.
I am thinking about using some thin wire to improve it (like this: https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z3-Compact/GPS-issue/m-p/1006245/highlight/true#M12642 ).
Another successful story here - gps stopped working, i updated my rooted kitkat to slimm 2.4, opened phone, did the connectors trick, but gps was still dead. Then after few days i checked "Device only" in Location settings and GPS came back to life! Now works with "High accuracy" mode as well

Also had problems with my gps. First I thought it was water damage. But pulling with the usb connector made it work again.
Did the trick with bending the connector. Now I have signal but is is not very strong.
Is there a way to make the signal stronger?
Is the copper strip the antenna?
Can I replace this with another copper strip that works as a better antenna?
Or .....?
If your gps antenna is somehow damaged, you could fix it using silver paint:
http://www.2spi.com/category/silver-paints-pastes/
I didnt try it, but friend of mine uses it to fix broken boards on laptops... Should work in phones too
Same problem. I sent my phone to service. They changed motherboard. Now GPS Works perfect. And my warranty is extended for 2 years, because of different motherboard and IME. Thanks Sony, very good service

The Gps reciver working perfectly....if you cant find satellites then your devive need service or replace...you dont need 3d party apps...Im using Igo and sygic and both ran excellent...
Mine is acting weird as well. Mine is tmobile version. I found that toggling location off and back on helped but we shouldn't have to do that. I'm probably going to have mine replaced if it persists.
I thought that maybe I was having an issue but now I think it has something to do with the pipes and towers, and blast resistant buildings where i work. Wasn't an issue with the Notes i had. but outside driving its fine.
I guess I will try a factor reset and if that doesnt help, I guess its time to figure out how to get a replacement.
I was having issues where it keeps thinking I'm home when I'm not
I'm still having frustration with gps. I have an Alcatel idol 3 that gets much better gps signal than the v20 running "gps test" from app store. I still get "searching for GPS" message in google maps from time to time in locations my other phones have performed flawlessly. I had a similar issue on the g5 and had to trade it for refurb which fixed the issue. I really dont want to do that with the v20.
The antenna is in the plastic trim at top which you can remove with 4 screws. It could be ours have a weak connection there or it could be a lousy solder joint on the underside of bga (ball grid array) chip.
Major problems with a two month old V20.
LG says they will not honor warranty because phone was sold as an "unlocked" ATT.
Also say that they show IMEI as activated two years ago!
This was brand new from newegg.com. How could it be activated two years ago?
Tremendously frustrating.
The top plastic cap in the H918 contains multiple antennas. Other models of the V20 which work on other frequency bands often have different antennas in this endcap, so when you replace it you need to select one for your particular model. Unfortunately the ebay sellers don't seem to know what cap to supply so often list the wrong models for the caps they are selling. The end cap connects to the phone's sprung metal contacts with either metal or conductive plastic pads, six in total for the H918. When I replaced my endcap GPS stopped working completely and picked up no satellites, on examining the replacement cap two contacts were missing which must be for the GPS - everything else seems fine (or I haven't noticed if some of the frequency bands are missing). I have attached a photo of the contacts in my phone and the replacement cap so you can see the problem.
I am now having difficulty finding a seller of the endcaps who can supply the correct part - I will keep on trying.
Been a loooong time since I've visited XDA....ah the memories, anywho, I have ATT LGV20 (keep it for removable battery and 2nd screen), The oreo update totally borked my GPS, it it always turning off and on, on its own and I get annoying location accuracy pop up which I have to agree or disagree to a lot.
It could just be big brother spying on me too I guess...
Any thoughts without doing a factory reset? I do NOT have root, though I wish I did. It is a refurb that was working fine before Oreo. Maybe an app that will monitor what is turning it on without root?
Thanks guys, happy holidays.
