256GB microsd cards - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

I have been thinking about getting the Motorola G5 Plus but I want to USE a 256GB microsd card, instead of a 128GB microsd card.
But on the Official Moto G5 Plus website, it says that Motorola G5 Plus microSd card slot ONLY SUPPORTS 128GB microsd cards. So how do I know that when I get the Motorola G5 Plus, that it will support 256GB microsd cards?
Anybody that is in the same boat as me, please tell me any suggestions that you have made. I'm currently in the United States. So the Moto G5 Plus is the only official phone available in the G series

What's the doubt? Moto clearly says that the limit is 128... I don't get your question

I use a 200gb card in a moto e whose limit says 128g, might even be 64, don't remember. Those aren't always hard and fast rules.

Well they officially support up to 128gb but you should be able to use a 256gb without any problems

Hi,
SD limits announced by manufacturers are completly useless... only two causes can make the limit:
- The filesystem used: Any SD card of 64GB or more is "pre-formatted" with exFAT. This is because this is a requiment enforced by the SD Consortium. Then, if the device doesn't support exFAT, they announce supporting only 32GB in SD. But if you reformat the card with FAT32, then you can use 64,128 or more.
- The SD standard supported: original SD has a limit of 4GB, SDHC has a 32GB limit, and SDXC has a limit of 2TB (at time, no card with 2TB exists). Then if the device has support for SDXC (as the Moto G5 and the 99% of smartphones of today), ANY card be compatible... as all cards has less than 2TB.
That's all! The Linux kernel or the Android subsystem doesn't imposse any artifical limit to the SD slot.

.
True..but I think you are using more than 128Gb then your phone may get slow down.

I know I had a tablet one time that would not read anything over 64 gb so I formatted an 128 card into two 60gb partitions.

128 GB limit for Moto G5

Is it possible that your phone will only be able to access 128 GB of the total 200?

note 4 could support 200gb sdcard ?

i wonder if note 4 could support this new kind of sdcard ??
Hi,
yes. The Note 4 supports 200GB MicroSD cards. I have a SanDisk 200GB card in my phone. No issues so far.
Regards
Stephan
I have the same one as well. 10gb partitioned for link2sd and the rest for storage. zero problems
This may sound stupid, but i will go for it and ask. Can you make ext sd + phone sd to work in RAID ?
Hi Sectoras,
no, RAID is not possible. And what RAID should it be? Mirroring, Striping, Raid 5, Raid 6?
You are thinking about a joined memory of internal and external SD card, right? This will be possible with Android 6 / Marshmallow.

I was thinking about RAID0 (Striping i think) to improve performance. If MM support such thing it could be awesome

No, it does not support striping. What it does support is called "Just a bunch of disks" (JBOD) but that's no RAID. JBOD is a storage volume created by joinig disks (here SD cards) of different sizes. JBOD does not improve performance, it just supplies you a single storage using all memory cards (Phone 32GB + ext. SDcard 200GB). There is also no data security (redundancy of data). Therefore RAID 0 (striping) is, technically spoken, not a RAID as well because of the missing data redundancy.
I also expect several issues with the JBOD solution of Android 6. The externa SD card is much slower than the internal memory which might have and according to some reports on the net does have adverse effects on the loading speed of apps and data. Also when the SD card breaks you will probably have to re-install the complete phone as you have no influence on where the apps and data are stored.
I saw a 256GB micro sd card. I'm assuming that will work too?
Yes, should work if the 256GB is an SDXC card.
If a phone supports SDXC cards based on the SDA 3.0 specifications (like the Sandisk 200GB card) it will support every SDXC card following that standard.
SDXC supports 64GB up to 2TB.
If some day there will be for example a 512GB or 1TB SDCX card available it should also work with the Note 4.

256GB Micro SD cards don't exist only 200GB
You either saw a regular 256 GB SD card or a fake 256GB micro SD card which has been reviewed as BS.

There is no such thing as a 256GB microSD card at this time. Biggest one you can find is the 200GB one mentioned.

ur wrong.. 200gb is not the last high capacity micro sd.. their is one micro sd with 512 gb capacity.. company name is Microdia.. just google about it..
The 512GB card from Microdia doesn't exist yet. At one point they were claiming it would be out 8 months ago (and was going to cost $1000) - but again it does not exist yet (and might never be as it's been almost a year since they maid these claims). I've seen plenty of people scammed and ripped of on these cards - again - THERE IS NOTHING BIGGER THAN THE 200GB for sale at this time.
Interesting I didn't know the Note 4 could support a microSDCard of that size, I thought the largest card that can be used is a 128GB card.

I'm using a Sandisk Extreme plus 32gb card and have never noticed a slowdown while using it as internal memory. I was previously using it on my old 3rd gen Moto and now have it in my G4. I picked it up at Best Buy on sale for about $24 US. I really don't need to use it as internal now but I wanted to try it that way. I may eventually format it as media but for now it's being used as internal and working great.

I've been using the PNY Elite card. It's cheap (32GB for less than $10) and the read/write speeds are great. No issues on my Moto g4 or GoPro
This is the card --> http://amzn.to/2beqqvZ
I have a standard Samsung class 10 16gb with no issues
Now Using a Sandisk extreme 32gb U3 as previous Kingston 32 GB Micro SDHC UHS-I Speed Class 3 U3?*was reported as too slow for Internal use
Samsung 64GB EVO Plus
Awesome random read and write for use as internal, with great sequential for those videos and large pictures.

Added: I am still using it as external in marshmallow however, I don't see a need for internal as 32gb is PLENTY for the apps I use.

I know it says that it's limited to 128gb, but has anyone been successful with a 200gb card?

i had an xperia play which said it would support up to 32GB. put in a 64 GB card and it worked. very likely it's the same case with the A7.
I have the samsung note pro 12.2 and it says its limited to 64gb microsd, popped in a 256 gb and it works perfectly. You should try it, most likely would work!
EDIT: googled around, and found that 128 gb cards use the SDXC technology, same as the 200 gb cards, so it should work! SDXC can theoritically go up to 2TB So we are covered.

Sandisk Ultra 200GB. The SD Insight App says the model is SL200.
I am using a LG branded 200GB SDCard which shows interestingly up as a Sandisk SD on the Huawei Tablet.
Works without issue.
What filesystem are you using for the 128GB card? Can we use exfat or ntfs and use large files like mkv movies larger than 4GB?

its all good. Adoptable storage is where you can configure android to use the SD card as internal storage. EMUI does not support this feature.

I'm planning to buy the M3 wifi 32 GB version online from amazon.com & I've also settled on the "SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSDXC UHS-I card" to use for storage. Since I won't be able to return anything after purchase (because I don't live in USA), I'd like to have confirmation about compatibility between this card and the tablet. Thanks in advance.

I had the same questions. I'm using a Sandisk SDXC 128GB microSD card formatted as exFat without any issues. The card came formatted already as exFat; I just popped it in. Storing large (>4GB) .m4v files on it and watching via VLC player. No issues whatsoever.
Which filesystem is best to use?
I got a Sandisk Ultra MicroSDXC UHS-1 card and I put it in my Huawei Mediapad M3. I'm not sure what is that strange file system called "Generic hierarchical". Should I leave it as is or format to NTFS or exFAT?
Note: I'm noticing that Windows 7 takes a weird long time to transfer files from my SSD on my main computer to the SD card. Is that weird file system the reason?

In any case is the performance as every bit as good as the from SanDisk based on my experience.

I've looked up the actual price for the SDXC Card, which is ~€ 22 for 64 GB and just ~ € 28,50 for the 128 GB variation.Amazon has those on stock.
In the tech-section is as known man inferior products, but renowned manufacturers aren't a guarantee for a proper device!

Beats me as well.
