Why is my music player using battery - haven't used it in 2 days? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I use n7 for my music player... I just noticed that it's 3rd on my battery consumption list?? Even before charging it, when I was down around 50%, it was still #3 on the list but with almost 10% usage. I haven't used my player since Sunday and I've restarted a few times since then. It does show up on the lockscreen from time to time (not sure why that is either)?
FYI: I'm also going to ask this on the n7 G+ board..... Because this may not be a "Samsung" question?

It's still running in the background. Probably auto booting also. Try killing it in processes and see if you can stop it from auto start. Maybe some other app that uses it and runs it in the background? You got some audio editing software on your phone?

Use package disabler and disable it from booting (you'll have to adb sideload extra permissions to get it to work without root) and install greenify, enable auto hibernation so it kills the programs you don't use when you turn the screen off.
You may want to just try greenify first. Also enable aggressive doze function which puts your phone in doze mode minutes instead of hours when your phone isn't in use.

Started with a disabler..... I disabled a bunch of junk, but not all of the bloatware (I like a couple things).
I also found a setting that shows the music widget/info on the lockscreen..... I disabled that, and my music player no longer is eating up battery.

Let's list The Deep Sleep Killer Apps

It'd be helpful to share experiences about apps that prevent your phone from going into deep sleep.
Hopefully, this thread can help not only the users but the dev side also as long as our smart phones yet haven't been coming with decent batteries.
The deep sleep issue might make your precious apps uninstalled by users no matter how good they're. So, don't forget to take this issue into account when doing development.
* MY SUSPICIOUS APPS *
- Chrome 18.0.1025123 (official)
* A friend here advised that might be solved by disabling auto sync the Chrome in Google Account. But I had never tried before uninstalled it. If you loved Chrome but have deep sleep problem, would give it a chance.
Also you may try other tips from our friends in this thread.
- Vitamio ARMv7+NEON 1.2.8 plug-in for Super Video 1.2.8
* The Super Video itself doesn't cause deep sleep problem. The plug-in does
- IM+ 6.2.4 (with "Go to Push in background" disable)
* Enable the "Go to Push in background" solves problem but will need to log-in(auto) every time you get back to IM+ after leaving it for a while. This waiting's boring sometimes.

My system info: SGN, ICS, Speedmod kernel. I've never waked my phone up before removed it from charging jack. It's just no need to do so. My phone still has good sleeping behaviour.
You can strike Chrome from the list. I have it installed, with sync enabled, and my phone sleeps perfectly. That's on a rooted stock LQ2 ICS ROM.
In fact I have 78 apps installed, according to the Play Store, and deep sleep is working perfectly. I have sync enabled on everything which is syncable apart from Google Currents.
Chrome does for some so it can be kept, with side note
Some tips:
Add stinking Facebook to list
Audio1 service: disable bottom choices in settings>sound
Wifi: airplane mode reboot airplane mode off.

I found that this method was not reliable as long as there was some app keep triggering phone-wake..sometimes somehow. On the other hand, you don't need to do rebooting if your phone is free from such apps.

Add IM+
It blocks "deep sleep" if you don't tap...(in the IM+)
Menu...Settings...Push Settings...and than tick the "Go to Push in background"
This may be the same practice for other messaging apps.
I don't have any issues with Facebook and deep sleep but this may be because I don't sync my contacts or calenders.
Screen Filter does stop deep sleep though. At least till you disable it.
Yahoo messenger.... kept my phone awake.... dammm it alll......
I hadnt had any of the deep sleep issues people complained of until around the time chrome went official. I tried full Charging/disconnecting but it didn't seem to restore sleep.
I uninstalled chrome and used the standard charge disconnect reboot method again.
Device went right back to sleep.
Re-installed chrome except didn't sign in (to avoid potential sync issues) phone still sleeping like a baby.
Maybe it wasn't chrome? I will have to "sign in" and re-test play around w syching and recharge...

Same here (no deep sleep issues) BUT with everything disabled in the Facebook's settings.
You can add OkCupid to the list of deepsleep-unfriendly apps.
... uh yeah
Its the location feature that causes the issue. Even though the app allows the feature to be turned-off, it's a lottery whether it works or not. Thinking back now this app probably gave me reason to believe my previous phone had a dud battery.
I have over 320 apps installed including all the so called culprits mentioned in previous posts and my note always goes into deep sleep.
The only time I get the awake issue is when I unplug the phone when charging without first turning the screen on and unlocking the screen. I don't know why it does this but if anyone has the always awake issue should try this before (as i did) you blame it on a app.
I wasnt using fool proof scientific methods but i wasn't getting traditional methods to work w the sleep issue until I uninstalled chrome official...I restored deep sleep and re installed chrome...its still deep sleeping (CpuSpy)
Also looking at settings "battery" tab... it appears that my device is "sleeping" occasionally while charging but "not awake" doesn't necessarily mean "deep" sleeping right? based on what I've read, the system prob considers 200mhz asleep when its connected 2 power...I dunno

The Chrome tips are interesting but now I'm back to Opera Mobile coz the nice Text Reflow feature.
My phone is always at 200 mHz with screen off during charging. There's never been on deep sleep stage in CPU Spy.
Just to chip in the Lloyds TSB app (mostly for UK users) is causing issues for me as of late. Eating away at the battery and preventing sleep.
No luck solving it yet. May just uninstall.
It's been App Lock and App Defender for me, never letting my phone go into deep sleep so I had to uninstall :/
any development on this issue on
a real fix???? particular Rom that's unaffected?
I must be doing something weird w my charger
bc I constantly lose deep sleep everyday
Im tethered 2 the usb charger, constantly have 2 monitoring cpuspy sux and Im not gonna take it anymore lol why do I HAVE 2 wait 4 100% to do the unlock reboot trick
this is a flaw I cant live with...I need 2 be able 2 take a nap wake up & not have lost 75% of my phones charge bc it wont deep sleep
its just getting 2 annoying, its making me want to sell, maybe go back 2 HTC see what's up hear they got HTCx1 or whatever rocking JB...
any idea what I could sell it for?...its SIM unlocked

I can still get rid of all my deep sleep issues by rebooting the phone after I disconnect from the charger. This is the only reliable method I've found (I'm on ICS LQ2).
I'm also experimenting with SetCPU (which I bought for my tablet) to see if that stops the problems - since I'm rooted I can use that!

# of apps installed vs battery life

Hey folks,
I have noticed that simply having apps installed (without actually running them, especially games) seem to decrease over all battery life.
Anyone else feel this way? Or am I over reacting?
is this why each app has an option to force close? a little piece of code runs in the back ground?
Some apps will turn on themselves without your knowledge. Thus, that is why you're experiencing battery loss. The apps keeps phone awake which prevents it from going to deep sleep to conserve power.
I recommend downloading a application from the play store called "Greenify". Ironic as this may sound this app allows you to detect apps that are running without your permission and you can simply stop them from running without your knowledge. There is an entire thread dedicated to this app.
Link to thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155737
The app is free in the play store.

Battery Life with Greenify on Droid Turbo

SInce Greenify works with the new MOFO method, I thought it would be interesting to see how it's affecting the Turbo's already superior battery life. How much further are people getting on a single charge?
i completely forgot about that. i will let you know. may take a couple days though to really see.
I've been using greenify since owning the turbo. Without xposed, root only allows for hibernation without having to turn the screen on. Otherwise, I haven't noticed much of a difference - though it is nice not watching the screen turn on, stop processes, then turn off many times a day.

No it can auto hibernate without root. You just have to set greenify as a device administrator - and it has to turn the screen on to stop apps. This function may require the paid version (dont remember), but not root. I think root may also allow hibernation of system apps, but even then I think that was an option without root.

does not work 100%?
My workaround was to use fast reboot pro since it stops apps without root or turning on the screen.
Haven't rooted my turbo yet (not paying for it when they give disclaimers and there was a bounty) but frp seems to save some battery plus switching to ART helps as well.
I don't think greenify will do much difference because it requires more of cpu downclocking and Governor change.

Huh? Greenify does not "downclock" or change your governor. It keeps wake locks down, and prevents apps from using battery by running when they don't need to be.

I am well aware of that. My lack of not seperating the sentences may have brought confusion. What I was implying, was that greenify won't do so much of a difference because to obtain legit battery improvements it requires tweaking of kernel and cpu and governors and achieve the best battery possible.

Do not be mislead to how many hours it lasts in the long run of quantity but focus on screen on time which matters most. I am not rooted whatsoever and I constantly achieve this battery life.

I see. I do think greenify does its job, and certainly helps battery life (especially in conjunction with xposed). I would, and I am sure many others would agree that it's still an effective and legitimate tool. I agree, not as much so as throttling, but that's not really what I thought this thread was about. We are unfortunately far from kernel tweaks at the moment ☺

apps not waking the cpu from deep sleep and being more efficient than a super fast cpu running more slowly and performing the tasks for longer. sounds better to me at least thats the idea behind the new job scheduler api in 5.x and greenify thats longer that all the components on the phone have to be operating and creating heat Im not an expert but my 2 cents
53?!?
Thats right, 53 hours, or around there at least. So I am using the original root image from mofo, with Greenify Donation Package installed, so I get auto hibernation, but not the system function hibernation....yet. I may be updating to an Xposed image soon, to unlock those features. I have every app possible except Carbonite Mobile (Auto Pic/Video backup/access) and TextSecure ( 3rd party SMS/MMS) set to auto-hibernate, including my 3rd party email K-9 Mail, I don't use the normal GMail app. With my current combination, normal usage inc. phone calls, texts, (mostly) web browsing or stalking the XDA app, I got a whopping ~53 hours of battery life before I had to charge at 2%. My phone is also my alarm clock. Unfortunately I forgot to take a screen shot, but I will try and duplicate it and take one.

Google Play Music killing battery

Has anyone else had issues with Google Play Music staying active and draining battery after you stop playback? It constantly uses CPU and drains battery even if swiped out of the notification bar. The drain stops only after swiping it out of the recents or force stopping it. It does it using headphones or Bluetooth, streaming or cached music.
This seems to have happened recently, possibly after the latest app update. I have not tested on other Android devices to see if this is specific to the S7E.

I'm not using Play Music myself, but I can assure you that swiping the notification doesn't necessarily kill an app. So Play Music will probably keep running in the background if not killed through the recent apps list. And because it's a media app, I assume it will also keep the mediaserver alive, which also drains battery.
It's the same for me using Poweramp. Unless I pause the music AND kill it through recent apps it will keep running.
If this is just since an update, they probably changed the behavior when killing the notification from killing the app to not killing the app anymore.
That is just an assumption because it's like I said the same for me and Poweramp.
No this is definitely a new development. I have used Play Music for a few years and it's never been like this.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
It's also draining faster while using Play Music as well. An hour of streaming over WiFi and my battery dropped 20% with media server and play music showing high usage.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
Hmm. Maybe try to downgrade the Play Music app to a couple of versions earlier and turn auto-update off in Google Play, then re-enable it in 2-3 weeks. If it's really caused by an app update, you can use an earlier version for some time to avoid battery drain and update again when a newer version is out.
That's what I'm going to try. I reformatted my micro SD card and cleared cache and that seems to have helped with media server. I uninstalled updates for Play Music and will try that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
Rolling back to an older version helped slightly, but it still happens. I think it has to do with background syncing with Google servers. I ticked the restrict background data option under data usage in the application manager and that seems to be keeping it in check without affecting streaming.
Check if google is stuck in the sync process. Its a old bug that shouldn't occur anymore, but you never know.
If it is stuck, remove it from device admins, delete data, cache and updates of the app, restart and update it again. Afterwards give it back device admin rights.

Everything is syncing fine. One time I did notice a calendar sync issue, but I switched it of and then back on and it synced fine. I tried turning Google Play Music sync off and that made no difference. However, restricting background data has solved the issues. It has been several days now and its no longer running in the background draining my battery after use.
Its not running fine if it drains less when you restrict the background data. Just because you cant easily see it, doesnt mean theres not something wrong in the background.
Could be another app as well but at least for me, turning off a feature wouldnt really be satisfying.

I don't really see it as turning off a feature since everything works as it should with the background data restricted. There have been no issues with streaming or downloading since restricting background data. Obviously something is amiss since that shouldn't be necessary, but for all intents and purposes, it is working now without the battery drain.

There is obviously some wakelock keeping the phone from deep sleep in the newer versions. I don't have root and haven't had time to try wakelock detector without root. I may give it a go today and see if I can figure it out.

Same issue here as well. It's so frustrating to the point where I'm considering going to spotify but there isn't a good way to upload my music collection.

I'm still having this issue. Restricting background data keeps it in check when I'm out and not on wifi, but if it is open in the background while on wifi, it starts draining. I have tried changing sync settings, cache settings, everything. So far the only way to prevent it is to force close the app when you are not using it.
Yeah this is ridiculous. My screen on time is 20 minutes.

Not really. It is probably minimized to a point where I can live with it, but it still happens. It still has a tendency to drain about 5-10% per day depending on how long I've been on wifi (I have background data restricted to keep it from running on LTE) without me having opened the app. If I force stop it, I can get a few days before it shows back up, unless I actually use it.

Google Play Services draining battery in 3G/4G

Under WiFi, my OnePlus 5 makes 5 or 5 hours and half of active screen. Under 3G instead, battery leasts really less (about 3 or 3 hours and half) because Google Play Services spends a lot of battery: the same of Display in percentage. I tried to reset my phone and to reinstall software from adb too. Any solution for this problem?

Get Wakelock Detector Lite from the playstore and figure out exactly what function of the Google Services rip your battery apart.
I would recommend rooting the phone and disabling your culprits (for me it was net scheduling, safe to turn off).

If you rooted your device with Magisk there's a module that allows Google Play Services to go into doze mode--normally it's exempt. You can also install the Greenify module which allows more aggressive doze than stock Android. Or you could go the route of identifying and blocking specific wakelocks as the earlier poster suggested.
Ok, this is the report form Wakelock Detector (phone battery was at 22%). What should I do now?
