Edge tint calibration after update, missing blue screen. - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I have seen a few YouTube uploads and other users describing that during the edge tint adjustment the phone reboots and a blue screen appears with an animation that resembles some kind of firmware adjustment.
I don't get that blue screen and don't notice any difference adjusting the red tint that for me appears in the top of the phone.
Would like to hear if the adjustment worked even without that blue screen or other thoughts about this issue.

if you check local "red tint" thread (and it's huge), nobody had experienced any extra blue or other screens or double reboots (like the instructions on the Edge adjustment screen state). also, just like you, many don't notice any changes after adjusting the edges color temperature and rebooting. so either that "extra" adjustment screen was Korean update specific or Samsung has butchered international update. or, which is even worse, many screens are just defective and beyond any software fix.

Me either
Yeah, I'm also facing this issue either. So bad that our unit didn't get that blue screen and edge screen still red.:crying:

Well mine did the blue screen and rebooted and my edges are fine now

I searched YouTube for " red tint update " and found one or two videos showing that blue screen.

This might be reason some (like me) haven't seen any difference.

i believe that's a mistake, UK has Exynos. i'm in US with SD but if you read that other thread i mentioned, almost nobody saw that blue screen all across different versions. definitely, never heard from anybody in US mentioning it.

Ditto here. Actually, it was the second time I did the calibration that I got the blue screen with some white Android figure (didn't really pay much attention), and a reboot. Fix was effective at changing screen edge tint...which I'd likely never have noticed had there not been all these threads re same. VZW S8+ here.

Okay , yeah I've read the thread shallowly, I can't remember anyone posting that it worked and mentioning a blue screen, so that's why I made a separate thread to hear more in detail if someone got it working and if that includes seeing a blue screen. My suspicion is that the update is flawed and maybe doesn't apply the changes to all the units.

so the first time you did it there was no blue screen? just for science, can you do it few more times with different slider setting and see if you get it again?

So the first time it didn't appear right? Did you notice any change in edge tint that time tje blue screen didn't appear?
That gives me some hope at least , I've tried applying it in Safe Mode but that didn't work either.

The "blue screen" you guys keep mentioning is when the display driver IC itself is reflashed with different calibration values, it isn't just slapping a software overlay.
My edges are fine, but just as a test, I set them warmer and the phone displayed the blue screen as expected, and the edges became warmer, I set it back and the same happened.

the problem is, only few people get that screen on reboot hence no edge color changes are observed.

No, no blue screen the first time, IIRC. Again, I really didn't pay that much attention, but I may have done the process a second time as I didn't notice either much change or a change that I was happy with the first time. But, it did definitely change the edge "tinting", and I then switched back to amoled cinema from adaptive, so perhaps moot.

oled screen issue?

can you guys try this out and tell me if you see this on your screens. first turn down the brightness and go to a web page with lots off black text. on my screen everything black leaves a faint line across the screen wherever there is a black pixel from right to left. do you guys see this? out is much less noticeable when the brightness is turned up.
I've seen a tiny hint of this in my screen, but it hasn't bothered me. If it's severe in your phone, you may want to contact HTC.

yes I notice this as well but I have to say that is only noticeable with backlight set to minimum, and i think it's a normal behaviour of an amoled screen. Now I have one question about the screen too:
When I'm watching pics or movies the screen has a very good resolution. For all the rest the screen seems a bit dotted and grainy, especially with text. For example in the app launcher where the app's names are written in white and the background is black the text is not extremely clear and if I take a closer look theres seems to be pink pixelss on the letter's edges. I can notice this thing almost evrywhere but I think it's a lot more clear to see with text and the backlight set to max. do you manage to see this too or do you think that's because i have a defective phone?

the grainyness on thin objects like text is 100% normal, its just how these OLED displays work.

No, mine experiences the same thing. Seems like reds are more biased when less power is given to the LEDs (not exactly a "backlight"). This is slightly noticeable on the lowest brightness setting too.
And mine experiences the "black line" issue too. I guess it's just how OLED screens work.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=628270

Is the pink tint firmware or hardware?

I've got a stupid pink tint at the very bottom of the screen and I've had 2 exchanges of the HTC One before exchanging for the GS4 and the network find it hard to believe I've had 3 faulty devices in a row and wont exchange it. Anyways I canceled my direct debit and told my bank not to allow anything from them until they sort it but It's just bloody annoying.
The Three Ones I went through all looked like this http://s16.postimg.org/rz4843lud/image.png and now my GS4 has a pink tint at the bottom, lol, I swear phones are getting worse.
Can't say whether it is h/w or s/w - I know mine doesn't seem to have it ... or it's not obvious enough if it has
But I would recommend not cancelling the DD as it will probably have consequences on your credit rating. Phone companies don't care about you cancelling it as they will get their £££
Does yours have ghosting? When I scroll up and down in menus I notice like the blue bars on the edges of them it changes to a darker colour, you can see it struggling to keep up, even see the old text through the blue bars.

It's commonly known as screen smearing, and we have a workaround for that

My GNex had the pink, and my S4 whilst not pink had a noticeable difference between the top and bottom of the screen. Darker at the top than the bottom.
Had it exchanged yesterday... new device is perfect, just waiting for Samsung to sort the laggy TouchWiz out.
Yeh they wont exchange mine saying I've had too many....... stop sending me faulty phones then.
Anyways wont pay them anything until they sort it.
Just noticed the purplish smearing on dark menus,
Also pinkish blue when popping in and out of the keyboard

I have the same thing, pink tint at the bottom when viewing under lighter backgrounds, it's pretty bad, gonna take it back to my carrier and try to get it exchanged.

Thanks for the response sir. Yes, I've checked your fix methods, tried the first two, but none of them worked. I think I don't have any smearing issue, rather I've a pink tint at the bottom of my screen. So, the upper 3/4 part of the screen is bright, and lower 1/4 part is dark (pink/purple tint). It seems, its a hardware issue, tho i'm running dead pixels app (from play store), which says, it will take 30mins. It is still running, but I guess replacing phone seems to be the only option.

[Q] Screen red/burgundy tint on blacks in darkness?

Hi,
Samsung S4 owners please help. Just received mine and everything looks good, however the screen has a red/burgundy tint on blacks in total darkness.
For testing I closed the camera lens and took picture so it's totally black, when you look at the picture in the dark it's not black and has red colos in it comparing to my Note ii and LG Optimus G.
If you have the same problem please post, so I can return it in two week period or switch for HTC ONE.
Thanks,
My screen is 100% black on darks. It looks like its completely off.

Confirming
Just back from 2 AT&T stores to check if demo S4 has the same problem, and confirming YES the blacks in total darkness is more like super dark dark red not 100% black.
The AT&T rep confirmed and said "If you don't like it, return it".
Also I found topic that covers this problem regarding red subpixels being active when displaying black , but the international version is fixed after firmware update.
So I think only US AT&T models affected with no fix for now.
Another thing I found is that if I scroll really fast on a black background there's a reddish haze on the screen.
Turn your brightness all the way down, go into a dark room, open settings, and scroll really fast up and down.
Does this happen to everyone else?

I Have the Sprint model and also experience this problem. There are several issues I have with this phone. Lag, software glitches, keyboard issues etc. And these occur on every S4 I have used which is several, none Exynos versions though. They rushed the release is what I think. They should have fixed the issues being compained about before release.

There is a long thread in the international S4 forum discussing this. There are two different screen problems, either red pixels are on when displaying blacks, or you get smearing on greys/purples over blacks. Samsung just released a firmware updste for the intrnational version that gets rid of the red pixels for those who had that issue, but it makes their screen smear. So no everyone has the smearing problem with tbe international version. Hopefully they can address the smearing problem with firmware soon. I can imagine some games being affected pretty badly by this issue.
Samsung S4 AT&T Version Red subpixels on black stay on.
See attached sample image. Easy to see in total darkness when brightness all the way down, red pixels visible on any black, picture, menu, web etc.. except boot logo.
The image made in total darkness, for black sample opened 100% black background.

I had this on my first S4. My GF didn't on hers. I took it back to the store and they looked at me like I was crazy (didn't argue that fact).
Rep took it to the back to show manager and pull another phone and he told me that this was common enough that they got an email about it from HQ.
New unit didn't have the problem.
Not only are blacks with a redish tint, but another way to tell if the screen has this problem is press the menu button. Then, it is easier to tell a good screen vs a messed up screen because they are clearly a different color. Easier to show them that instead of minimum brightness, in a dark room, you can see it I swear kind of argument.
I wish I would have taken a pic to post the differences.

Yea, just head over to AT&T and swap it out. A display issue such as this is very rarely addressed in firmware and has to be replaced.
I replaced my unit yesterday no questions asked(kinda) as they're very aware of the myriad of issues some early devices have. Just don't use too much tech jargon like "pixels" "true black" "contrast ratio" etc. or you might get blank stares as I did lol. Good luck.
I have the T-Mobile version and have this also. I noticed it when I first turned it on. I had an S3 before so I know how black the AMOLED screens can get. I don't mind much since it's just when it's displaying blacks and I haven't seen it much except for boots. I think I have the smearing too but I just look at it as motion blur :silly:
Try turning off the auto brightness. My S4 does the same thing only when auto brightness is on.
does this happen on all models, random models, or only white/black models?
I'm curious to see if this is a potential side-effect of that semi-transparent digitizer (like the notification screen-glow thing that was mention in other threads).

Screen smearing when scrolling through menu...?

Anyone else experiencing this??? It looks weird almost like it's a lag or something but it's not. It's like a legit pinkish type tint when scrolling. Am I gonna have to return my device ALREADY?!?! I literally just bought it 4 hrs ago -___-
EDIT: OK so I'm informed this is called "smearing" and that's the perfect word to describe it. Only happens in the settings, looks like the words are lagging behind my scroll and catch up lol. Is there a work around for it or something? Even though there shouldn't have to be but that'd be nice i I didn't hafta go through the process again of getting a new phone a day after I got this lol.
If you mean in the settings, that's normal. That's screen smearing/ghosting. Explanation is in this video here http://youtu.be/C_APG3kLiYs around 13:30.

Yes, it only appears in the settings that it "smears" as you call it, yeah actually smearing is a way better word to describe it, not a different tint. Is it on every S4 that this is happening, or is it a defect in only a small % of S4's? And is there a workaround for it?
Also, what is the "pink tint issue"?
Thanks!

Yes. Every S4. There is a work around. But it takes away from the screen by messing with the gamma. The pink tint issue is when part of your screen is darker than the other. Like my S4 is dark at the bottom and gets lighter as it goes up like a gradient. Like this picture http://i.imgur.com/9jhVEnr.jpg or this http://i.imgur.com/DhryGwg.png
It's more noticeable on grey screens.

The smearing will only happen in dark settings yes. It has to do with unused pixels. Like the video I posted before explains. If you don't have a pink gradient issue then you're all good. If it does I'd get it exchanged asap before you're stuck with it like me.

Is there a test to do to see if I have the gradient issue?

Look at a solid dark grey background. If its darker on one side that's bad. I noticed mine when I was texting everytime I pulled the keyboard up the text bubbles changed colors a bit.

Very curious screen anomaly.

I have these 2 very light yellow areas on my screen.
Here's the interesting part, they don't show up on screen shots. They also appear to be getting brighter.
A new screen is probably the only fix. But I'm curious of the cause. Any ideas?
I have included a sample of the issue.

Did you draw that in paint on a screenshot or take a picture of your phone?
If they are hot spots (bright white dots) then they are part of the screen and a new screen is the only issue.

My first buy had similar problems. I exchanged in a store for another.
There were lots of defective screens in Poland.
Factory reset can help for few days.

I drew that because they do not appear on screen shots. Could the color be between the LCD and the digitizer?

The colour is because of a ****ty screen. @acejavelin mentioned in another thread that they are caused by compression for some reason. Don't know how that happens. Like @dzidexx said another screen is the only thing which can solve it. Or deal with it, I do not know how bad it is sorry

Defect rather looks like "Lights behind the closed door".
Do a black photo or jpg file. Look at it with different levels of brightness.
Sometimes it can be observed with other colours.
More photos of defected screens(not mine):

The last two pics are it exactly. Even though its a little annoying, I still love this phone!! Its the only issue I've had and I use it a lot. For everything. Between flashing, modding and every one of my boot animations has been made on this beast!
And thanks for all the input on this issue everyone.
And sorry to all those who suffer as I do with this affliction. Just kidding.
It's happening to me too. It's starting from the top right

Hardware !! Read the thread and you'll see it has been made clear it is hardware.
I have the same issue. If I press on the bezel next to the yellow area with my fingers the colors go back to normal until I release. Could this be caused by the screws inside being too tight?
I would disassemble my phone and try to unscrew them a bit but since the back cover is glued I'd rather not unless I'm sure that's it.

Sorry man I just didn't see the point of you stating it was happening to you when it didn't help diagnose the issue and it had already been said what the issue was.
Had the same thing with my phone and now with my laptop. Maybe I'm lucky
