Popup preview - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I'm using Google messenger as my default. Some reason I'm still receiving that preview popup whenever I get a text and I can't find a way to turn it off. I do want the notification just don't want the preview showing. Anyone know how to turn that off?

I'm not 100% sure but is this the option that you speak of? If you're on the latest version of messenger, click on your profile picture in the top right corner of the app, then you can find this setting inside of Notifications & Sounds.
EDIT: I'm so sorry, I had a moment of brain fog. I thought you were talking about (FB) Messenger. My apologies!

No problem. I still can't figure it out. Nobody using Google messenger here and turned off preview??

Okay I just downloaded it to have a look and I think you're out of luck mate. The only setting that even comes close to altering the notifications without downright turning them off is the option I've highlighted below under App Info > Notifications. Obviously not ideal but the choice is there.

How to turn off top banner notification?

As per title, how do you turn off the white banner that slides down whenever you receive a notification (fb, appointment, charging,)? This came in after i updated to android 5.0.
It's annoying it blocks the view when i'm doing something else and i can't take it off but wait until it retracts back!
thanks

hi,
Take a look at stock Sms app, open sms app, top right three dots( menu) settings, scroll down to notifications, press and check "pop up display" if check or what. ?
2 Also, you can also check Phone app, press, three dot menu(top right) settings, call, see call related pop ups? check.. unchecked..
3 Then you can take a look at.. Settings, Sound and notifications, scroll down and press on Application notification , it will load all apps and you can select any app , block that notification if you want too ?
Is it these options you were looking for ?
good luck
thanks!
3 is what i was looking for... though i find out that if you turn it off, it will turn off ALL notifications for this app... that sucks cuz i only hate that big white banner notification.... so i'll still leave it on
You should be able to swipe it to one side as soon as it appears to get rid of it, rather than waiting for it to disappear.

Notification popups

What is with the small, fast, pointless notifications popping up from some apps. Facebook & texts seem to be the only apps I have seem activate the pop-up.
Why are there no settings?
What's the point if I can adjust timing or actions?
I am a few years removed from Samsung but I imagine this is a TouchWiz feature.
I think you're seeing he edge lighting notifications. Try turning it off in settings --> display --> edge lighting
Nope. The small pop-up at the top that displays incoming messages. Edge lighting seems to work when it wants to but this is a true peek notification at the top that goes away after 1 sec, barely time to realize it is there.

For messages:
Messages -> Settings (3 dots in the corner) -> Notifications
Turn off popup display and preview message
For Facebook:
I have no clue
Looking for the globAl controls for this popup. Is it TouchWiz? Is it Android? Where are the settings?

You only get the little bubble pop-ups if Edge Lighting is on...however, if Edge Lighting is off, you get bigger pop-ups and the ability to reply within that pop-up. It only lets you do this if the Edge Lighting is off though. I've been searching and trying to get this to work right since I got the phone and just now figured it out. The Edge Lighting does nothing for me, so I'm happy to turn that feature off in order to reply within my pop-up notifications.
Turned off edge light but left panel on. I see within edge lighting there are app selections so this now makes sense. I am now getting popups as well as in training controls but it surprises me that I can control which apps. Inbox doesn't pop-up for instance but messaging does.
Does anyone experience problems when taking pictures with the messenger app, I cant seem to send the pictures. When I press the send button nothing happens. Also, I dont get popups from the email and instagram app when I use the phone, only a sound. Is it possible to regulate this?
Did you figure this out?

You mean toasts?
Try an app called "Notification History Log" if you want to see them after they vanish.

When you hook up the phone, you will need to confirm USB debugging popup on the phone and also access to data.
Get the USB drivers from here:

Notifications Issues Post Oreo Update

Hi,
Anyone experienced a problem with push notifications on Oreo? I've updated and now some apps are not giving me notifications.
Hangouts and Wordfued are the two I have experienced so far.
If you open the apps up and then go back to the home screen the notifications work. If you close them fro the app switcher screen they stop providing notifications.
Thanks
Andrew

Yes got tge same thing. Ebay, gumtree etc.
I'm dealing with this as well with Tumblr. :/
..and BBM.
More severe problem with whatsapp while the screen is off...
I found a way to get my tumblr notifications to work even after I've closed the app to stop it running in the background. It's not ideal, but until they release an official fix... Meh. Hopefully this works for you guys, too?

Find your app and switch to Allow
And... done!
Again, I hope this works for you too.
It's strange because I still get twitter notifications despite not having to go through this for that app. Hmmn.
Does anyone know how to change the default notification sound for Twitter? It used to be in the settings under push notifications- it would let you select the tone, now it isn't there. I can't find the option in phone settings either- I have 8.0.0.369 (C432).

hi .you solve problem with notifications?
thanx..if yes..how ?please

There is a number of guides online, none of which I've got to work. I think the bottom line is, you can't any more.

Over time all the apps that were not working have started working fine. Not sure if that is down to it knowing which apps to keep open or software updates or something else.
Apologies I can't help more.

Notifications not popping up when screen is asleep.

Hey guys.
Just got my new S10+ and I've notice that when my screen is asleep, I don't receive any notifications until I either lift the device or push the power button to wake it up.
I've checked my battery optimization settings, made sure the apps I wanted weren't controlled in the background
I have the regular S10 but I get that too, mainly with gmail but even now when I used the phone the notification of a new gmail doesn't come up. sometimes they come through, half the time not. never had such problems with my old phone
yep, same thing here on 10+. driving me nuts !! and edge light doesn't work as well.
i tried every option and can't figure it out what's the problem.
I also have never seen the edge lightning when the screen is off

It's pretty cool. I like how when are In a movie app you can still interact without leaving the movie app.
But to clarify mine is working with the screen off. Dumb question I know but are you sure it's enabled?
To me this is one of the coolest features of the device.

You have to be more specific with your issue... But, go into your message setting and make sure message pop up is turned on. If it's turned on, it could be a glitch. Just go into your your phone's settings, hit apps, find messages and then tap on it. Then find storage and hit Clear cache and storage. See if that helps.

Yes, pop up setting is turned on but with gmail is a hit or miss, sometimes I get notified, sometimes not and it's mostly when screen is off. my main problem is with another app that I'm not receiving any notifications even though everything is enabled and I cleared cache, re-installed and what not. I have no problem getting notifications from whatsapp, missed calls, sms etc.
Also, when I clear the notifications, the badges on the app's icons also dissapear even though I didn't yet go inside the app to see it. is it possible to keep showing the badges after I clear the notifications? I don't know if it's unique to android pie but it shouldn't be like this.

I believe that the pop up messages only work on certain applications to my knowledge. I've seen messages come up but, I've never really payed attention to my gmail yet because i usually get notified on my galaxy watch. The phone is still too new even for me. I'll test it out some more.
I'd just be happy to get all notifications from all my apps and keep badges even after I cleared the notification.
yesterday i saw edge light for first time, but it only works when screen is ON. what really cancels the purpose of it.
screen OFF "edge light" doesn't work.

Yup, the feature is enabled, and I have assigned 6 apps to show notifications with the light. They do work when the screen is on, but not when they're on.
I got workaround by installing Glimpse Notification. The edge lighting showing while screen is off but what disappoint me it not showing the notification text.
My s7 with s9 rom showing edge lighting with notification text without using any apps though. I think maybe is pie rom? Or just s10 rom?

Heads up Notifications

Hi, I'm sure a lot of us find Heads up Notifications annoying. I have disabled it on my S9 and S7 before this and it was a huge relief. However I can't seem to find any resources on how to on it on One UI 2.1 for the S20. The adb global settings code doesn't work. I'm sure there must be a way?
Thanks
Anybody?
Not possible anymore. Every time a heads up pops up I just got to the notifications settings for the app and toggle the "Show as pop-up" off. After a week off doing this for any heads-up that came up, I don't see them anymore.
Where do you find this option? I can't seem to find it. Thanks
It's in the notification setting for the each app.
Alright, managed to find it. Thanks
It looks like this is now available in the app and the adb hack isn't needed any longer. It would still be nice to apply a global default with this hack rather than changing each app individually.

I find Telegram always turns back on itself after some time. Very annoying.
There's the option to change it.
For example on the Samsung Message app:
Go to notification settings, tap in "General Notifications" (tap on the letters, donĀ“t tap the toggle switch) and then you would find the option "Show as pop-up".
You have to do it individually for each app, in FB messenger and Whatsapp is a little different, but you would find "show as pop-up" by tapping in the letters in each option in the notification settings.
Hope this help!
