Looking for a strictly better phone to replace note 4 . - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I had my note 4 for more than 2 years now and so far it was the perfect device for me . It still has all the features I can think except for elements resistance (not a big deal for me) . The only things that start to age are RAM, SoC and maybe battery . The features I like most about note 4 are:
big screen >= 5.7
laud speaker : note 4 has one of the loudest speakers I've heard even though not stereo .
IR blaster : surprisingly useful
S pen: Even though pretty useful sometimes, I know this is a note exclusive feature so I might let it go .
Big battery: goes without saying a big phone with small battery is useless .
durable materials . (needing a case to protect an already big phone would feel very bad, luckily note 4 seemed durable enough to carry without , and even though I dropped it on the road once it survived almost completely unharmed).
And of course I would expect a new device to have the latest and greatest SoC,RAM etc like note 4 had when it launched .
So far I can't haven't quite seen a device to have all that maybe except for note 7 but we all know what happened to it so what device do you think it's closest to fulfill all these this year ?

Lol! Note 4 old, but still best phone out there! Good luck!

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 will be worthly alternative when it comes out

Note 8

I too would say the Note 8. It should be out later this yr. Its what I'm waiting for.

Nexus 5 or Note 2?

Nexus 5 released a day back and the specs are not that bad if we see. Now this has given rise to a hunger of having an official google product in me. I use my note 2 like crazy and love it too but I want to see how it feels having a nexus device.
Storage is one thing that still makes me think of retaining my Note 2. I dont use SPen much either. Nexus 5 looks strong on paper and its tempting me. Is it advisable to sell my Note 2 off and get a Nexus 5?
I am in same situation but specs are really a boost from note 2 but major flaws of nexus 5 are storage and battery life....though I really want to see the display comparison....is the nexus 5 display better than note 2's...I know its 1080p compared to 720p but I really saw some 1080p display looking worse than 720p's like xperia z1....
I will wait for some reviews and then will decide is it worth to upgrade..
The Nexus 5 compared to Note 2 , looks like cheep, plastic, smaller and non Spen device.
Next Move will bring us to Note 4.
And the answer is no way to abandon my Note 2.
Performance on the Nexus 5 will be superior. That Snapdragon 800 screams.
The main issue is battery life. A petty 2300mha battery for a 5 inch 1080p display... It's going to suck.
Screen is slightly smaller with more pixels. But it won't be as jumping with colors as it's an LCD type screen vs our AMOLED screens which pop with colors.
The performance will be much better on the Nexus 5. Better processor. Same RAM. Better GPU. More FREE ram at boot.
Now, if I didn't have the Note 2 and I were to buy a new device, I'd get the Nexus 5. But I think the Note 2 is superior FOR MY USAGE. The SPen helps a lot, and the extra screen is great. The screen is plenty packed with pixels for my usage, too. The 2GB ram is great. In fact, the Note 3 having 3GB isn't an upgrade as you have LESS FREE RAM AT BOOT than the Note 2! WTF Samsung! haha. Anyways, RAM is taken care of by the Android OS. But Samsung takes up too much ram to begin with.
With Nexus devices you won't have that issue, as there is nothing at boot extra. It's only Android processes. So it should run much more smoothly. My Note 2 does stutter or lag a little every once in a while, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I don't know... Battery life on both devices are different. Smaller with updated processors vs bigger battery with less efficient display & processor? I don't know... Wait for some battery tests? Regardless, I've never killed my Note 2 in 18 hours except for my vacation days where I'm on a bus or train for 5-6 hours then I get it down a nice amount.
i was also thinking into a change to a nexus but the battery definitely make me consider having my note a year more. i bought the note for screen and battery and mexus doesn't win at any. moreover i dt know any game yet that doesn't run smoothly in the note and the screen difference is not that noticeable since my cousin has a 1080p screen and mine seems to be better also for him.
my 2 cents

of course Nexus 5. Note 2 will get its last update with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But you will have many updates with Nexus 5. If you are not a traveller person, don't think about battery life. Buy 32 gb model and live your days good.

Non removable battery (instant deal killer right there for me), small and non expandable storage (32GB vs the 80GB total on my Note II), small display (even smaller than its 5" since part of that space is taken up by the virtual buttons), no S-Pen, no Samsung SW features like MultiWindow = for a poweruser they don't even play in the same league.
Samsung is doing something very stupid with the Region Lock and something less stupid but that is pissing powerusers and geeks off with the Knox warranty status but the (sad) truth is that the Note III is the ONLY smartphone out there today which I would replace my Note II with. ANYTHING else is INFERIOR to my Note II.
I gass you have very big hands to use note 3 like phone lol
Ive got note 2 yesterday and one nexus 4
Sorry but that clean android isnt for me. I prefer samsung and htc devices....not nexus

I will get a Nexus 5 for sure to replace my backup phone HTC HD2, and will also keep my Note II forever!! unless otherwise Samsung smoehow try to screw it up with an dubious update,(yes I don't trust them anymore),I've played with a Note 3 at the store but didn't find it much an upgrade to my existing Note II.
I`d go with nexus 5..coming from note 2 user!!

Well, If I were to buy a new phone and the Playstore sold hardware in my country, I'd seriously consider the Nexus 5.
But as an upgrade to Note 2? No way. Sure, it will run circles around the Note in the performance department... but I find that for my use, the Note's performance is sufficient (even though it lags now and then). Even for games, the lower res mens that pretty much everything runs smooth so far. And the lower res doesn't really bother me, as I find the screen of the Note 2 absolutely fantastic... better then that of HTC One, IMVHO. Xperias just can't compare. Sure some text zoomed out can be a tad sharper on 1080p, but otherwise the screen on the Note 2 is just gorgeous.
The S-Pen is usefull... especially for extending menus while browsing the web. That's one unique functionality that only a handfull of phones has and means that some webpages can only be browsed with these devices. Other tricks like video or gallery highlight thumbs are neat as well. And it's good for Excel editing too, especially during a meeting (otherwise it's quite difficult in a zoomed out view - only view in which you actually see a reasonable amount of data).
Storage? For me 16+64 GB is barely enough. Actually scratch that, 16GB internal is definately NOT enough (a bit more than 10 GB available...). I hope an update can allow me to use the external memory for apps. My memory card is almost full as well. So 32 GB altogether? No thanks (even with less bloat).
Battery? It's decent on the Note 2, but I wouldn't call it a stellar performer. So here we have a battery that's smaller by almost a third? And not removable too? I'll pass, thank you.
Plus, does the Nexus 5 even have the USB OTG capability? I remember there were some issues with the earlier models. I like to output video via MHL... love connecting an external USB drive or additional memory card via a card reader and it can be nice to connect external controllers via USB. Is Nexus 5 able to do this all?
Other stuff, primarily Multiwindow and Popup Browser are neat also. Hopefully even Pen Window will be possible on the Note 2.

Think of it this way. Only for a few minor hardware boosts and a new Launcher would you really want to upgrade ?
Note 2 still stands as a power house when compared. And if you like the idea of talking to your phone start using Google Now the experience will be no diff.
On the other thoughts I would love to upgrade to Moto X if ever get an opportunity

After reading all your views I completely feel I'll have that itch with the nexus 5 when it comes to battery and storage Coz both things matter to me. I think my note 2 will stay in my pocket for comparatively good time

I am running the Ditto note 3 rom. .. With 4.3... Note 3 apps and installed the 4.4 kit kat apps on top of it. .
I also have the nexus 7_2013.. which will get 4.4 and is similar to nexus 5.. But I rarely use it. .
I use my note 8 and note 2 more
Why would I need the nexus 5 ?... Note 2 is good enough. .
Will bother about a new phone next year

C'mon!
Oh God! I think it makes no sense at all! Galaxy Note II is a pretty much older device which can still be compared to other TOP devices. Plus, the Note II has got touchwiz, and lots of Samsung applications which are pretty usefule. Nexus devices are a little too poor to me. I think that if you want to try out a Nexus device, you should try the Nexus 7 2013! I think that rocks. Got such a cool display, so incredibly fast and pure Google style. Plus: updates and other Nexus stuff.

Move from nexus 5 to Note 3

Ok, a little background. Been moving phones like crazy in the last 4 years. Djeez XDA and big boy toys, you're all to blame
I now have a Nexus 5 32GB next to my Note 1 which I just have to flash roms (yes, I am that crazy)
To be honest I love the form factor of the Note and I am very disappointed in the Nexus 5. How can you make a phone that has a bad speaker to start with, a seriously bad video stabilization in my eyes, rattling buttons, hardware gps connection issues, yellowish display ....
Are there any people here that switched from a Nexus 5 to a Note 3 and do you want to share your opinion about it?
Or are there people that dislike the Note 3 after a while?
Go for it....u will love it...go for n9005.
Wish u good luck.

Hi mate I did the exact same swap from nexus 5 to note 3. Love nexus devices but was massively disappointed in the 5. Everyone goes on about vanilla android but I love touchwiz.
Software and hardware wise the note 3 is a clear winner in my eyes. Battery is alot better than the nexus which is expected due to the size I guess
I love the big screen both for size and quality. Also the advantage of having the memory card option for storage.
I think it is a good move, I am bit of an android/samsung fan boy but I reckon the facts speak for themselves regardless of opinion.

I made the switch from a nexus 5. After years with Android I was really hankering after a pure Android experience. I loved the Nexus 5 when I first got it but I have to admit I found vanilla android a bit boring after a while. Build quality was an issue too for me. Love the note 3. Battery life. Performance. Screen size. S pen, which I do use a lot. Touchwhiz is lookin old though, would really like it if we got the new look on the s5. Knowing Samsung like I do I'll be surprised if we do. Anytime this year anyway. And you see that takes us back to the Nexus 5. Updates! You choose which is more important to you.

Seems like exactly the same reasons why I would move to the Note 3.
Now that I modified my car radio so I can finally play music over Bluetooth so the 32GB - OS - APPS doesn't cut it anymore. Especially when travelling in remote countries.
I've never had an issue with my S1 S2 S3 or note 1 except for the GPS in the S1 which was a hardware contact design issue.
All my HTC devices have gone in for warranty with a lot of (insert not so nice word here). So no more HTC.
I thought going to the Nexus 5 was going to give me the joys of a vanilla latest rom but I am disappointed in the lack of stuff that google build into it and especially the top specs hardware which just don't seem to be top in the real world.
So probably will have to sell the N5 to fund the Note 3. .... now what will I tell my wife ... again. :silly:
I've had an S2, S3, S4, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, also iphone 4s and 5. I'm now on the note 3 and I can safely say I think it is the best of the bunch by far.
I know it is easy to say because I have the device but you can also see that I have experienced a number of recent devices. I had to buy my Mrs A note 3 when I got mine

For the price you really can't beat the nexus 5. In almost all other aspects the Note 3 (I can only speak for the N9005 which I own) is the better phone.
I briefly switched over to the nexus 5 and did enjoy aspects of the vanilla software as well as the development scene. However after a few days I began to miss certain features of the Note 3 software and really missed the screen, pen and battery life. Speaker is much better too.

Agree nexus 5's are good for the price, Nexus phones generally nearly always are. However I wasn't happy with the speaker, screen, camera or build quality which has really put me off the nexus brand.

Which phone after Note 3

Hi Everyone
Had my SN9005 since launch. Feel it's now time for a new phone.
Been waiting for the LG G4 battery reviews and they are not very promising. Though it still seems the best of the bunch at the moment. Would love a Droid Maxx but no signs of anything similar being released in the UK.
Wanting to move away from Samsung because of KNOX.
So what's the options pls.
TIA
Wait for the new Nexus or the new OnePlus
I still don't see why everyone is so obsessed with KNOX... The EU laws render the KNOX flag irrelevant. (So unless you lot all vote 'leave' in 2017, those apply to you as well.)
At any rate, maybe the Nexus 6? Or the newly expected Nexus 5 2015?
Personally I'm waiting to see what the Note 5 will be.
probably the note 5 it will be a huge upgrade over note 3 and even note 4 i will tell you why:
1- cpu = it will have a 64 bit fully unlocked out of the box
2- ram = it maybe 4 giga as its first note and 64 bit samsung may not remanufactures note 4 so it will be 4 giga ram to feed real 64 bit cpu
3- software = newer touchwiz with lollipop 64 bit fully support out of the box
4-display = 2k or even 4k i think it will be 4k and it maybe 5.9
about the edge it may not came with edge it may come with fully foldable display very limted like note edge did in 2014
If this is indeed the Note 5, then I would be first in queue for it. My only problem is that Samsung seems to be heading towards closed off devices and I'm not a fan of them.
If this is the case, I'll be going to the G4. I've loved my Note 3 since I've had it. I don't think I can go for a smaller sized phone anymore. 5.1 just seems too small now.
Note 3 camera and casing really let me down. Kinda material (casing) with kinda price tag really dissapointed. No more Samsung after Note 3.
Any suggestion?
Unfortunately with Samsung they are not updating they bring out the best phones but leave customers hanging I've not even seen lollipop and m is being released and puts me off getting Samsung again to be left out in the cold after 12 months so that's why I'm going nexus I get the updates soon as they come out and no that in 3 yes time they will still be releasing current updates
what do you guys think of the upcoming chinese phones like xiaomi or meizu ? (i heared the last xiaomi mi note pro had massive overheating problems)
Note 5
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
I think that the best option is waiting for note 5 or new nexus or other new. At now don't have worthy successor note 3 in my opionion. If you must change note 3 for other phone i suggest Note Edge because is different from phones in the market but have KNOX. For example i like have phone which is uncommon .
Note 5 or next nexus.
I personally think that note 5 will be the best choice. It should have many improvements over note 3
I wonder why Note 3 still rock us.
I think may be Note 5 (Edge) or S6 Edge (Plus).:good:
I like the phone with many good custom ROMs.
Atm it's not worth changing it with another phone, even the s6 wouldn't be a decent upgrade.
I'm keeping this for another year (bought it last summer) and will most likely get the note 5 after it gets a bit cheaper.
Nexus 6 is garbage (just like all the nexus devices), note 4 is not worth it, s6 is not worth it, g4 is not worth it, basically all current Gen phones are simply not worth it, as they aren't a huge upgrade.
And Sony is absolute trash, stay away from it! I've had their z3 tablet and it was the worst flagship device I ever owned, in my life.
i upgrade my note 3 every now and again with new casing and glass screen protector.
am using it till it dies.
the thing is so future proof. the only thing its missing is a finger print scanner

+1. Absolutely true. Got a new battery and updated rom. Maybe it won't die?
I have to agree with most persons that indicated the note 5 as being a viable option, but the concern I have is with Samsung Tizen OS. If the note 5 comes with Android M, I'm sure that will be a great device, otherwise seek the LG G4.

It's just such a shame that the Spen is a Samsung exclusive...
I can't go without it. If I'm not writing or drawing, I'm using it for games or the delightful little feature that is Penwindow. A regular stylus would not suffice, it's the Wacom tech that makes it what it is.
Regular stylusses are like trying to fingerpaint a Picasso.

MicroSD-Card reader, IR Blaster, swappable battery, larger battery, Gear VR, no fragile glass body, etc.
Screen off Memo
the only reason why I want to update to Note 5 from Note4 is "Screen off Memo". And now we can have this SOM on Note 4, so no more Note 5 for me (Big thank to xperiacle and Pako7).

No microSD support is bad, but I still can manage that.
But NO user replaceable battery....that's a DEAL BREAKER!
I'm the type of person who use a device until it is broken.
So being able to replace battery easily means I can just replace the battery if the original battery is broken.
That's why Note 4 is better than Note 5
note 4 vs note 5
I just purchased a note 4 Exynos chip instead of a note 5. The reasons for the going for the older model.
- expandable SD card.-( I upgraded from an LG G2), it was always a hassle to backup Roms and if the memory is full from apps and app data then there was no space for music let alone videos. now with SD card I can carry loads of media and even swop out SD cards while I travel. also easy to update ROMS and load content from computer to phone without the need for cables.
- Battery life-the note 4 has a larger battery, yes the note 5 has more efficient hardware and might actually last longer but i believe that with proper software like the recent update to 5.1.1 will negate the hardware effectiveness unless you run high intensity games. I easily reach 2 days battery life and can push 3. and then you can just pop off the back and boom insert new battery. also as your device ages the battery dies and it is a cheap fix to just pop out the back and insert new battery, future proofing a bit.
-Exynos chip- The note 5 has a much faster chip but I am not a gamer. I like to use my phone for everything from calling(yes it is obvious but very overlooked) to running functionality apps that simplify life, with some light to medium gaming thrown in between. IE more calculations than graphics that is why i purchased an unlocked exynos chip note 4. it has the ability to oneday, with the correct software, to also run with 64 bit capability. downside is lack of ROMS especially my favorite CM 12.1. I have also done benchmark test and on geekbench i am getting results of 4500 plus multi score and 1200 single. Antutu gives still 54000 . this means that with Android 5.1.1 the phone is not much slower than the note 5.
The Spen - you cant break your phone with the note 4 Spen, and is idiot proof like you can with the note 5. the other little upgrades are just software. Software can always change. Look at some of the fantastic work done by Devs here to give note users the latest features on older phones.
IR blaster- overlooked but so useful, can control TVs Aircons and Media devices. (just wish samsung could also learn IR signals like my old G2 to custom make a remote for the house/office)
Things that make the note 5 better.
Faster chip( as mentioned above not that major for sum of us, if you game a lot then maybe it is), more ram, better fingerprint reader(one thing I wish note 4 had), samsung pay (nice to have, will unfortunately not be coming to my country soon so not a problem).
Things people say makes note 5 better but I think is just hogwash
- build quality- both are excellently built, but everyone just puts covers on anyway and then the note 4 even wins with better covers that integrate with the back panel, and no glass that can be slippery.
- wireless charging. REALLY people how difficult is it to insert a charger , USB type C with fast charging would be the ultimate solution. and if you really want it the note 4 can also use wireless charging with 3rd party products
Above is just my 2 cents worth. use it ignore it it is just up to you, I know I made my disision and I am not regretting it at all. will probably root my phone soon, but so far there is little reason to root. maybe to use note 5 apps
:good::good:
Plus no mhl and no smart select ie and converts to text
The Note 4 has overall mostly the same features as the Note 5 does. You won't really notice and difference in speed on a normal daily use, only benchmark wise.
The Note 4 has a removable back, replaceable battery and microSD support. If your Note 4 battery is fauly, you can get a new one under warranty. If your Note 5 battery is faulty then you would have to send it back to Samsung.
And, of course, the Note 4 is cheaper and you're getting way more value for your money than with the Note 5 in my opinion.
It seems to me that every new Note has features I don't want added, and ones I really use taken away.
Case in point - I still have my old Note 3 lying around as a spare, and picked it up to use the other day. It made me stop and think - the Note3 was actually an awesome phone, why on earth did I "upgrade" to a Note4 in the first place?
1) Note3 was lighter and slimmer than the Note4
2) It had USB3 - to be honest I don't miss that all that much, but it was kind of cool when copying large videos off the phone
3) The car dock audio worked flawlessly via the USB cable, something I've been waiting in vain for Lollipop to fix, but to be honest I think it's a hardware limitation
I feel the same about the Note5 - everyone + dog has belabored the lack of SD card and removable battery, and while I wholeheartedly agree that these individually would be a deal breaker for me, the nail in the coffin is the lack of a Snapdragon processor.
Yes, yes the Exynos is a fine processor I'm sure but it feels as if all the development of ROMs is happening on the Snapdragon. I mistakenly bought the N910C Exynos version when the Note4 was first released and it took me about a week before I sold it, at a loss, to buy a Snapdragon variant - it just felt laggy, I couldn't find any hope that I'd ever be able to put CyanogenMod onto it. In short I hated it, and myself for not checking the model number before buying.

upgrade ?? confused

Hi all,
I'm confused and very hesitant about upgrading , I have a note 4 and I love it but like I said I'm very hesitant and reluctant to upgrade because I don't want to be a slave to a charger.....this is the number one reasons I hate Iphones besides not being able to expand the memory you can't switch out the battery, and you become as I stated a slave to a charger. Also I want to know if you are rooted & running the latest software does it make a difference what device you have? I know a friend of mine who has an s6 and I know one who has a note 5&6 their constantly charging it because the battery is constantly dying. can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to a note 5 if I cant expand the memory?
Can anyone tell me weather I'm doing the right thing, Or can anyone tell me anything to rest aside my fears concerning upgrading. ......thanks
I think best upgrade from note 4 is now s7 edge.
S8 is not anymore samsung phone becaus there`s no HW buttons and screen look ... WTF? WTF? ... pain in eyes so no thanks.
Still note 4 is amazing device but I think only exynos version becaus on Snapdragon if u have screen time 3 hours u can be happy of Exynos 6 hours sot.
I have 910F with snapdragon and low SOT is reason why i want to upgrade. (OR i need replace mainboard for 910C)
I did not upgrade my Note4 until the Note7 came out. Then it go recalled so went back to the Note4. I can swap the battery around when I want and I have a 256gb microSD card installed. It's still a great phone I say keep it.
I have rooted my Note4 and have a Note7 rom installed. It works really well.

There's really not a lot of good phones to upgrade to with as much features as the Note 4. Closest by far is the LG V20 and Huawei Mate 9.
I'm actually aiming for the BlackBerry KeyOne cuz how good the battery life will be, I'll wait for a full review though.
Im sad of 910F (snapdragon) battery life. I looking for 910C (Exynos) but in my country is quite imposible
Short Answer: The Note 4 won't be beaten by new phones. Only if you are willing to sacrifice 2 features. The pen, and the removable battery. But for the next 2 to 3 years, it will stand alone on the throne.
Swapped the battery in the beginning of the year, because it died down with some shutdowns after 2 years of usage. No Shutdown since then, I have low SOT but still got 3 days instead of 2 before (910F). Just imagine having a phone with a fixed battery, you would either have to live unhappy with it or buy a new phone. The display is absolutely fine, no AMOLED aging problems yet.
It got a fine camera, 4k video, QHD Display, fast processing power and UI, good battery life, and a pen. That's so far stuff the note 4 has, and isn't worse than recent phones in a considerable amount in any of the things it does.
I crave for an even bigger display (something like 6 - 6,4 inch with 16:9), dual sim (with the bands I need), small bezels, and durable design on the edges (no bent display). I mean man, i dropped the note 4 so many times. The metal frame got damaged like it should, and the display hasn't broken yet.
Future Galaxy Notes won't get bigger in my opinion (Samsung using 2:1 ratio, only good for movies), and even after the note 7 disaster, removable batteries are going to be even less common (like no flagship phones have them anymore).
My only hope are smaller asian companies. But even Xiaomi (who are not small in any way, but they show to have the guts and put money into development of innovative phones like the Mi Mix), won't introduce an integrated pen and removable battery design just like that. Who knows, maybe in 5 years it may be different. When phones are just a display at the front, and you have to be different because they all have become the same concerning the design (lg g6 = s8 design, or like all the sharp aquos and the mi mix).
By the way, I use the dr. Ketan rom. Main Reason: With UC Browser (you can use a custom background, like a black picture. Bugless black browsing experience), and the official samsung theme manager, I got a close to complete black UI.

(OR i need replace mainboard for 910C)

on s8 you can set the navigation bar to be static and black and you will get the same as hardware buttons with the plus of the force touch home button.
nobody used to the hardware button will get any difference in using them.
to understand what i'm saying just give a look at the antutu benchmark ... you will see the black bar.just imagine the black bar with buttons.no difference
you can adjust even the ratio to be 16/9 so...if you want you can get advantages from the infinity display otherwise not
Still its amoled. After half year of using u will have different collors on display on Button spot. But i dont understand why samsung use just only 4gb of ram on latest CPU ... Most of application eat around 700mb and 8gb will be nice to have on flagship.
I using my note 4 as navigation but s8 rly sux with screen ratio + edges for it.
I thinking about upgrade to oneplus 3t but night shots its imported for me alot + battery life where is samgung s7 edge for now best choice.
Even by current standards the Note 4 is still a very good device. Especially if you have the Exynos variant.
If the Note 4 had the S7 Edge Camera, fingerprint scanner and Ip68 resistance, it would be Samsung King.
