what music players work good on the LG G6? - LG G6 Questions and Answers

What high end music players do you guys use for the LG G6 that doesn't have the audio cutting out for a split second on every song or skipping that is comparable to Poweramp? I was considering Player Pro but it has the same problem. i tried JetAudio Music Player but the highs sound muffled without one of the audio enhancers you have to pay extra for. I don't like the idea of buying an app and then having to pay extra for other features when other apps have it included for free. Also what settings or tweaks do you guys use to correct the cutting out or skipping? I have the settings maxed out on the PlayerPro and Poweramp and still have the problem.

Will that app work with the headphone jack and bluetooth? I didn't see any info about that in the description.

Yeah it does. If you don't have their headphones in the preset list go down to the bottom for "other headphones". Should work with bluetooth. I didn't keep the app very long after finding out it wasn't showing my album covers and no way to add them like with Poweramp and PlayerPro. The interface is so 2011. Rather ugly by today's standards. the EQ was good sounding though.

Any problems with it? Are you using the version 3 alpha? That's what I'm using now. I think I got it working better with the newest version 704. I adjusted the buffering and priority. The settings are different inn this one.

so it doesn't have audio problems? Did you adjust the buffering or priority? I'm trying to understand how it works good for you. I am on my 2nd G6 over this issue and still have it on Player Pro. So far the Poweramp alpha 3 is working good after i tweaked it.

None that im aware of yet? Version 3 was a bit glitchy found some songs would stutter and i sometimes had a weird distortion.
I went back to the official 2.x version and it's fine, earphones are fine and i cant say more than that really? Not sure why your looking at replacing the phone over the app? Its software and new to the device. Unless in samsung nothing is ever optimised straight from the box.

going through V20 forums about the quad dac, I'm pretty sure only some players (maybe only LG Music) recognises the ES9218+ DAC in the G6, the rest apparently can only recognise what Android audio manager api or whatever lets them recognise which is only the Qualcomm DAC so it essentially limits it to 48khz and plays that.
At least this used to happen, I hope LG has fixed this and allowed the ES9218+ to be seen by 3rd party players and used properly, does anyone have more insight into this? Please let me be wrong about this lack of support -_-

should I stop buying galaxy phones because of poor music quality?

I donot know if it is something wrong with the galaxy lineup or maybe android but I am having poor music quality on my phones I had a galaxy s3 and now a galaxy note 3 .Tried nearly every player poweramp, winamp, player pro and even rooted the s3 to try viper4android but the music always sucks either too flat or too noisy .should I try a sony device or the music on android isnot rich and crips (os problem).
I tried the new Adapt sound in note 3 with the default player and nothing new.
I use the bundled samsung headsets (tell me if I should replace them).
Thanks in advance ☺.
Are u talking about the sound with or without headphones?
Anyway I think the sound is one of the best u can find on any cell phone, there are just a few better (htc m8 4 example). If u are talking headphones I would personally advice anyone to switch away from in ear headphones (sound always bad to me) and take some real headphones instead. Hope that helps in any way
With headphones .

Bundled headphones are rather poor/flat for music - I still use those sometimes as a headset since the controls and mic work (while other models of headsets do not) but for music I use separate headphones.
I use the earpiece from my HTC one and it sounds nice.
Only caveat is the music player of touchwiz is slow and dumb.

Try over ear headphones or at least switch if you like earphones. I haven't had any issues with the sound using sl 150 headphones.
good music quality achived but with issues
I tried apollo + dsp manager yesterday with the bundled headphones and the sound quality was greatly improved but the installation of the dsp manager messed up the default music player and the system as they become not responding when I get notifications during apollo playback . Maybe I will try a cm based rom any recommendation for good ones .
Thanks.
Head on over to hi fi org. Music, get a separate player like a Fiio x3 or x5. My rig is an x3 with vmoda m100 headphones, powered by a portaphile 627 amp. Day and night totally. I hate carrying both around but sound on phones are anemic at best.

You also may opt for a ROM with Viper Audio, but seriously you need better headphones first.
As others have said I would agree
1) Standard in ear headphones are not very good quality with any phone.
2) Android doesn't seem to be oriented towards prioritising high quality audio.
Having said that there are a number of steps that are likely to improve audio quality depending on how important and how much money you're willing to spend.
My advice would be first get a decent over the ear quality headphone.
Then get your music in lossless format e.g flac files not low bit rate mp3.
My personal favourite music player is Neutronmp.
Then if you still want more and are willing to spend more then the advice to head over to headfi given earlier is going to lead to an excellent source of advice.
Likely advice, again referred to earlier would involve investing in a separate dac / headphone amp.
Many available at different prices, I use Fiio E17 via usb otg cable and usb audio player Pro

Has anyone figured out how to actually user our DAC?

It is driving me crazy that we can get this thing to output at 24bit/192k Hz or even just 24bit/96k (I would be perfectly fine with 96k as I can honestly barely tell the difference between 96 and 192).
I was listening to some 24bit vinyl stuff on my phone and I could help but wondered why it sounded "dull" for lack of a better term. Back into PC and all of a sudden all of the high end clarity is back (relieved to know I am not going deaf).
But this leads be to the question, our phones must be downsampling to 48K. Even Neutron says it can only sample 48hz so what the deal? I know the DAC in this phone is supposed to support something absurd like 32bit/356k Hz but it seems like it is only outputting 48K.
Is it just me, or are my ears lying to me lol???
You are correct. The phone downsamples and converts everything to 48khz pcm. Nobody who buys this phone seems to care about it and LG is not in any hurry to correct it.

If it's true hi res at DSD (DIFF), WAV 24/96 at least, or flac 24/96 or the very least flac 24/48, and with a good quality headset, IEM or CANS, you should hear the differences, forget the B&O one's, they don't make much differences, then you know the quality. Never compare the V20 with any standalone DAP, maybe low quality one's.

My V20 seems to be using it, with the hifi dac toggled on and off , I can clearly hear the differences, when compared to my G5 hifi DAC, it sound slightly better, but only a marginal better, I think it all comes down to the quality of the components use, either way my sony ZX 2 sound way better, but my xperia X performance does not compare to the LG.
Ilike sony, you can see my IEM collection below in the sig, going to pickup a pair of MDR EX1000.

To me it just sounds like when I toggle the hi-fi mode it is just pushing more voltage. Just a glorified "gain" control lol. It gets louder but no clearer and still sounds a bit hollow. when I compare to my sound blaster z direct stereo mode the v20 is crap. And it's saddening because we all know it has the hardware to be so much more. Some one get an LG rep in these forums lol.

I have to admit that this is true when compare between my Xonar and the phone. I am very disappointed and the only reason I keep it cuz v10 is so slow now. Better Audio for audiophile?? my ass, just louder, all sounded like mp3, so why must we use flac. Not to mention the camera is super dull for late 2016.

Any player will play those files... however, every player is decimating the files down to 48khz prior to sending them to the DAC because the phone is reporting that 48khz pcm is the only available ability of the DAC.

Your player is playing the files, but before it sends the info to the DAC, it is decimating them to the best reported rate, which is 48khz pcm.

I'm not sure what your on about, I have 24bit/192k files already, why do I need LGs? I also have tracks I have recorded at 24bit/96k and personally mixed and mastered my self. I know how down sample audio sounds.
The problem isn't the files its the fact that the DAC isn't outputting anything higher than 48k. I'm not sure if you have any other DACs you can test with but that fact that there is a major difference between my sound blaster z and the v20 is proof enough that the DAC isn't functioning as it should.
Hearing is not a one sound fits all.
The DAC Hi-Fi on the V20 does an excellent job compaired to many other phones out there.
At least with my V20 I can hear the over all better quality of playback when turning on Hi-Fi. The music is much more rich. And tones that I have never heard in music before can now be heard.

That doesn't change the fact that many of us bought this device for specific reason. Once of the biggest reason for me personally was because the ES9218 has some really impressive specifications. If supports DSD and yet converts to PCM. I have a problem with that, it isn't functioning as it should. It supports 32 bit stereo at an outrageous 384Khz and yet decimates everything to to 48Khz. So that means for those of us who have invested in good pair of cans, we are upset.
I am glad you think is sounds good and I don't want to take away from your experience but it does not change the fact that 24bit 96/192khz files sound like crap coming out of this phone compared to a DAC outputting the signal correctly.

What are you using to play your files.
You mentioned neuron, but what about the stock player?
Its very possible that its not the phone that's the issue. But the software / player your using could be the problem instead.

I have used the stock player, poweramp, neurtron, JetAudio lol all of them down-sample the audio. The phone is definitely the issue. If you have another DAC that outputs at 192kHz you would be able to tell very easily that the v20 is down sampling to 48kHz

@shadowxaero -
@beavis5706 mentioned in his testing of the V10 that:
"I have done some more tests given the information provided here and I have come up with some answers. An interruption when switching the DAC on/off signifies a player that can output true hi-res. I did some test recordings on Audacity through the input on my laptop with a music file that has known frequency response up to 88,200Hz. The players that can output true hi-res (the ones that interrupt with DAC on/off) play those frequencies all the way up with no cutoff. The players that cannot (no interruption with DAC on/off) are using Android's internal resampler and are getting resampled to 48kHz (24,000Hz frequency response).
The players I have found that can output true hi-res are ZPlayer, PlayerPro, Shuttle+ (thank you stupc), LG stock music player, Google Play Music and ES File Explorer media player.
Having said that my ears tell me that all players work with the DAC. However only the ones I have listed above can output true hi-res. The rest, while they do still sound good and do benefit from the DAC, are not outputting true hi-res and are instead being resampled to 48kHz." (from post #7 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/general/music-apps-using-dac-t3252596)
My understanding is that this is likely true for the V20 as well, as really only the OS and the hardware changed and it's extremely likely that LG did as little changes as possible considering their rocky start with the LG V10, which has the exact same re-sampling issue.
So that's 6 music player apps that actually bypass the down-sampling on the V10 and probably the V20, but the only way we can know for sure on the V20 is if someone with a similar test bench to @beavis5706 can replicate his work on the V10 testing music player apps on the V20.
So who has a good sound card, test tones over 24 KHz in a hires file, and Audacity or the like?

Best music app to use with quad dac on v20?

This is a somewhat complicated issue becuase of how music players interact with the V20 dac. I've been reading about this for many months on the web, mainly on threads here, on HeadFi, and on Reddit and the consensus seems to be as follows.
The stock LG App works for everything above 48K/16 bits. But apparently, it upscales everything (including redbook 44.1/16) to 48/16. In addition, ATT and Sprint excluded it on their versions of the V20. There is a thread someplace on this website on how to add the LG stock music app to ATT and Sprint phones that does not require rooting.
There are numerous music players that correctly decode everything below 48/16 (no upscaling). But many people say that they also downscale everything above 48/16 to 48/16. Then there are some people that say that some music players (including Blackplayer and Pulsar) correctly decode samples above 48/16 (no downscaling). From what I can tell, the consensus is that Neutron downscales.
Many people really love Poweramp. But it appears that the "normal" version downscales to 48/16. Some people say that the alpha version 704 of Poweramp does not downscale, but many more say that it does (for the alpha version, you first have to buy the "normal" version from the play store and then download the alpha version from the player's website), at least for the V20 dac. Supposedly, the next version of Poweramp will be able to properly use the V20 dac, but there hasn't been a new version for many months now.
Some people root their V20 and do things to make the music player do different things - adding viper for android, for example (I'm not a techy kind of guy, so no go for me). And some people say that the entire upscale/downscale issue will be resolved when the V20 gets the Oreo update (but that won't happen until probably sometime next year).
I use the LG stock app, which I had to add to my Sprint phone. I have not done any testing to determine if any music players (beyond the stock LG player) correctly accesses the V20 dac above 48/16. My info is based solely on what I've read (mainly on the three sites mentioned above). as such, you can take this all with a grain of salt. If none of this makes any sense to you, or if you believe (as many do) that human hearing can't differentiate anything above 44/16, then get a music player that you like and that has the features that you want - which is actually the best advice anyway.
Tested neutron, poweramp alpla 704 and stock.
Stock sounds like its utilizing it, i mean it has to right?
Neutron is downsampling and you can def tell the diff.
Poweramp alpha 704 with the stock output sounds ok not better then neutron
Poweramp Alpha 704 has hi res audio support but it stopped functioning on nougat devices.my v10 utilized it and it was amazing, best audio ever.that was when the v10 was on MM. After nougat it broke the high res playback.this is case with most devices.poweramp is working on fixing it for over a year now .in the meantime theres a little trick for better quality with poweramp.if you are rooted add this line to the build.prop "ro.lenovo.hifi_support=true".then reboot after setting correct perms.poweramp high res playback will work now but only 16bit. i noticed it improves the sq.so im running it like this until poweramp gets thier **** together.BUT trust me when i say when the native high res playback starts functioning, poweramp demolishes even the stock app by a mile.my v10 on MM with poweramp hi res output sounded better than the v20.it beat every single app including the stock on v10 by a longshot.
Also in poweramp use SoX resampler.there also a noticable quality difference.
In regards to stock app resampling at 44.1/16, that is correct until you modifiy build.prop to allow direct 16pcm.
audio.offload.pcm.16bit.enable=true
I have tested several different flac files ranging from 44.1/16 to 192/24 and they all output bitperfect sound, IF dumpsys is to be trusted.
adb shell dumpsys media.audio_flinger
LG Q8 with Poweramp 704
I have an LG Q8, which is the smaller V20 with the same hardware.
After trying several apps (most mentioned in this thread, including the stock player), I kind of never got the WOW-audio I was hoping for.
There is a lot of theorizing about up- and downsampling, but what counts for me in the end is my ears. What i hear.
It all kind of sounded the same, and quite similar to my old galaxy S5 - which was quite good.
Then, when using Poweramp alfa-test-version 704, I had a major improvement in audio quality.

I've read that Poweramp 704 alpha hi-res selection is actually accessing the dac on the snapdragon chip, rather than the V20 sabre dac. This is supposed to be fixed in the long-awaited next (alpha? beta?) version of Poweramp. Again, I have no proof of that, only what others have said.

Does Tidal work out of the box or do I have to do anything special with that as well?

Hello
how have you ever decided to buy LGQ8?
I have to buy a cell phone with DAC but I'm undecided between the Q8 and the ZTE Axon 7.
Do you take me straight?

Really? Have you measured your sample rate output?
I read on another thread that in fact Phonograph downsamples hi-fi audio.
I don't have a way to measure sample rate really, but I will try this.

Yes. I tested with adb command. It doesn't downsample. Only upsamples 16/44 content which you can stop by editing build.prop

As far as I know you need a rooted phone to edit build.prop.
Before I rooted I was very satisfied with Poweramp alpha 704 build to the point where I didn't root my v20 for almost 2 months when I usually root right away and put Viper on it. Need to change a few settings on Poweramp to get it to sound better like the aforementioned SoX resampler and stuff but it sounded night and day difference compared to any of the previous Galaxy phones I've used and even my brothers Nexus 6p which has the stereo sound.
Imo though nothing sounds as good as Viper paired with Dolby and a good convolver.
Does anyone know of a music player that neither upscales 44.1/16 to 48/16 nor downscales higher res files to 48/16 - i.e., actually accesses the V20 dac correctly (without rooting)?

Please go to following forum and request Hi-res playback for Honor 8 Pro

I am sure most poeple know that PowerAmp is arguably (Or unarguably) the BEST music player on planet right now. It also supports 24 bit 192 kHz Hi-res playback on most phones.
But sadly our phone with HiSilicon Hi6403 (32 bit/192 kHz and DSD lossless format support) doesnt feature in them.
I have submitted our phone's details on poweramp forums for the same.
Pls do the same as it'll get their attention if many people ask for it.
Here's their forum thread:
http://forum.powerampapp.com/topic/...poweramp-build-704-before-requesting/?page=26
Please mention:
1) Your device name (Huawei Honor 8 Pro)
2) Android version (7.0)
3) DAC (HiSilicon Hi6403)
And of course..In you don't use PowerAMP. USE IT.
Is it still advisable to use Poweramp in an Android based DAP?

DAP? Download accelerator Plus? What is DAP?
I always used Poweramp with every device except Samsung.
Cause, all the options you get like 10 band eq, reverb, Bass, treble, Stereo expand plus up sampling etc.

I'm planning on buying one. The problem is, the cheap ones won't give any difference at all in the sound quality. Those prices are the same or even higher than Honor 8 Pro will make you hear the difference.

[Q] Root/other headphones and audio quality improvement methods/audio mods

Hello,
I find headphones dongle with my earphones quite lacking quality/soundstage, but searching through forums I stumbled upon this: Viper detects our essential dongle as a speaker. Was it fixed, or do you have any suggestions how to improve sound quality?
I'm using AuriSonics ASG 1Plus, which are an excellent IEM's, with low Impedence:
(11 ohm +/ 10% @ 1kHz16 ; Sensitivity: [email protected]).
So there should be no problem powering 'em and dishing as good sound performance as possible.
I know essential uses Cirrus DAC (which is average, but I'm not really buying any high-quality USB-c DAC or portable AMP).
I come from Pixel XL, which had dedicated 3.5mm jack and SD DAC, it sounded okay and WAY better than essential.
Some EQ tweaks can elevate a bit of problems, but I'm looking for a more all-around solution (whether it's fixed viper(drivers/libraries/etc.)(( or something else)).
Thanks!
Bump.

How about this DAC?
https://www.zorloo.com/zuperdac-s

I bought it when it was pre-release for quite a bit less.
Much better than the included dongle that comes with the phone.

I bought the first headphone Z:ero and got them on time.
They worked great.
I bought the DAC while still on pre-order and received it a while ago.
For a small DAC the quality is really good.
The volume buttons make it very usable since you can set the input to the DAC from the phone at an optimal level then use the volume buttons on the DAC for the input of the car stereo, headphones, etc.
I'm quite happy and it's much better than the little dongle that comes with the phone.
Is it Focusrite or Apogee? No, but it's not $2K either.
I found the same issue. I don't think it is the DAC, but instead the native Android USB/DAC driver.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/themes/finding-music-player-essential-phones-t3710793
The problem is that this won't work for streaming applications. But I listen to FLAC / hi-bit MP3 so it solved the issue for me.

Thanks! Great thread you've created, really explains it.
Which app would you prefer, Neutron or Onkyo? You explained about Onkyo, but it's almost 10 euros for me, Neutron is a bit cheaper and I was thinking for quite some time to buy it. Had it on my old Blackberry Z10, it was native to BB OS.
Right now I'm using foobar, since I'm using it on pc, where I think it's the best music player, but when it comes to Android, you live you learn hehe.

Unfortunately, I only have experience with Onkyo and Hiby. The Onkyo is pretty well developed and something I use fairly regularly so it was worth the money to me.
Hopefully somebody else can provide comments on Neutron for you.
Anyone tried the Viper audio add-on in Magisk? I purchased Bluetooth Skull Candy Ink'd for $20 and love the sound quality. Actually have the volume at 80% most of the time

I just purchased a pixel audio adapter, as it measures well for its price ($9).
The market for high-end usbc adapters isn't quite there yet it seems, a traditional dac+amp setup is probably still better if you need more power.
If you're using IEMs though, powerful amps tend to have a higher noise floor.
Just tested Neutron player, it's excellent.
Huge increase in soundstage, overall processing quality, sounds great.
Magic is done under Audio Hardware options, selecting 'Direct USB Driver' to allow direct access to the USB device.

I have that adapter and the Essential adapter. Using Onkyo HF application it was able to use multiple bit rates with the Essential adapter, but the Google adapter only works at 48kHz.
I have the Sabaj Da3 as well. It works great with the Onkyo HF app, it supports multiple sample rates and upconverts to DSD512 as well. Issues are: 1. It's huge. 2: It burns significant battery, especially if upconverting. 3. When I bought it was $90, right now it is $119 on Amazon - so it's expensive!
Honestly, for non-critical on the go listening the Essential adapter works really well once you bypass the Android USB driver.

Thank you for your original thread which pointed me to these apps..
1. I tried Hiby, and did like its music quality, but its very rough for me.. I could not make/receive voice calls when it locks my headphones.. Also it does not show any info on the actual bitrates its using..
2. I am trying out Neutron trial version, which is a 5 day limited use full feature version. It too seems to be limiting the output to 48kHz. Yet to try Onkyo.

USB Audio Player Pro also seems well regarded and developed. I believe Hiby is a single developer and is much more of a work in progress.
Just found the perfect setup for my IEM's.
Ainur Sauron Magisk module and Neutron player's "direct USB support" option. Sounds amazing now!
Had quite similar experience in the ol' days with Colorfly C3 and Klipsch iem's (can't remember the model).
Or just that I'm easily impressed
Tried viper, just really dislike its signature sound. Clarity, bass, convolver turned on and tuned a bit, still, not to my ears.
