GREATEST battery life on Android O beta - Google Pixel Guides, News, & Discussion

I just wanted to put this out there. I have O beta installed with latest update, no root, bootloader locked, DNS66 app for adblocking and always on vpn, greenify (whatever it can do without root and jumping through adb hoops), stock launcher and I have never ever ever had such a great standby battery life. In EX kernel managers battery monitor, I see < 1 % per hour screen off battery drain consistently where I have not been able to go below 2.2% with any, (I say any and I have tried all) rom+kernel combination on 7.1.x.
This is GREAT!! I have never been happier with any stock rom ever.
EDIT: I would like to add that I have LG Urbane watch connected with phone all the time so bluetooth is on all the time but I bluetooth scanning is disabled (in location improvement, wifi scanning is still on). Battery optimizations for android wear is disabled.

Is it possible you can take a screenshot of your battery stats from settings so some of us that like visuals can see? What is your screen on time like?

That's interesting, cause my battery life and performance have both dropped significantly for me on O compared to Nougat

It's worse on O, though pretty great for beta. I've got up to 5h of SOT.

Best ever is 7h on PN and Frank kernel.
Stock usually 5h so the O isn't too far off. Maybe very slightly for me. It can only improve from here I think.

7h is unheard of. were you on battery saver mode the entire time?

I can get over 6h on a fully stock pixel, locked bootloader and all. I would say the majority of my time is on wifi. O beta seems to work well but my understanding from a community post by Google, don't have the link anymore, is you need beta Google play services installed as well to get O's battery benefits. I can't say that it makes more of a difference for me in comparison to avoiding notorious apps which hinder performance. I had similar battery life on N.

My battery life on O was horrendous. We're talking night and day. I run stock with not more than 20 or so apps. Something is really really wrong with O. I've gone back and forth on the beta twice with the same results.

I use the beta ROM about one week and it is very very good , also battery very good

I'm getting really nice batterylife with 8.0, which is awesome. It is now more in line with my average battery life with other devices like the HTC 10 and such. This however is fine to me as long as it's not dying by 1-2PM for me haha

I am completely stock, just updated today. I turned off background operation using the battery manager built in to Android to limit apps like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Chrooma Keyboard, etc.
For my usage my phone wouldn't last very long. I would probably hit 50% with an hour of screen on time. Now I'm at an hour and 54 minutes with 54% left. I've been off the charger since around 11AM, and it's currently 4PM so I'm definitely gonna have to see where it goes from here. When I leave work the real concern is heat when playing music or podcasts over Bluetooth, for whatever reason my phone was getting really hot when I used Bluetooth so I'll see how that is when I leave work today.

"DNS66 app for adblocking and always on vpn"....slightly confused by this..did you mean that you get privacy features like other VPN providers? AFAIK as I know DNS66 is only a local VPN and does not provide security/privacy features

Android 4.1.1 Jellybean Battery Life Thread

Seeing how a new firmware came out on the Nexus S, I want to see what kind of battery life everyone is getting on Android 4.1.1 Jellybean. And since everyone cares about battery drain one way or the other, we can use this thread to post tips on getting more battery life and/or try to figure out what's causing battery drain.
---
Anyway, PLEASE include these when showing your battery usage:
What ROM/kernel/Governor you're using
A combination of the three can determine why/how you're getting the battery life you're getting. Also, post thread link for the ROM/Kernel if you can.
SCREEN ON TIME
Probably the most important thing to know when determining battery life. Since the screen uses the most juice and generally the amount of time we'd be looking at our screen, the screen on time is very important to show. You can get this by going to Battery > Screen
YOUR GENERAL USAGE
How you used your phone is another important determining factor of how your battery was used. If you took pictures or listened to music, that would explain why you got such low battery life. More information the better.
IMAGES
Images help as it gives information which would be probably be too difficult to describe. The Battery section in the Setting section would help as would Battery monitoring apps
A simple template would be the following:
Code:
[B]*IMAGES[/B]
[B]ROM[/B] -
[B]KERNEL[/B] -
[B]GOVERNOR[/B] -
[B]GENERAL USAGE[/B]
blahblahblah
[B]CONCLUSION[/B]
blahblahblah
----
ADDITIONAL TIPS
- Show images of CPUSpy. May help see if your CPU is running out of whack or if, for some reason, is running on 1000MHz too much.
- BetterBatteryStats app screenshots. It gives a much better detail on what's waking up your phone, what apps are using it, and so on. You can buy it HERE. It's a very good app to monitor battery usage.
- More images the better. So we know what's going on with your phone.
PLEASE DONT
- Embed too many images to your post. It'll be too difficult to look at this thread with hundreds of images being embedded at the same time. Plus, people looking on mobile phones would probably struggle opening the page. If you have a lot of images, please just post the link and not an image
Anyway, thanks! Hopefully we can get amazing battery life on Jellybean!

ROM - Jellbean 4.1.1 OTA from here: http://goo.gl/AXr2d
KERNEL - Default/Stock kernel
GOVERNOR - Default/Stock
GENERAL USAGE
Usage was, in my opinion, light and didn't really do much. Most of the time, I was on 3G only to go on WiFi when in a Starbucks. I turned off my phone when watching The Dark Knight Rises and trying to save the most battery but that didn't really seem to help. I used the camera once in a while but didn't listen to any music.
CONCLUSION
So far, this battery seems kind of... bad. Especially with my usage (which I thought was light), I thought I could get more screen on time than just 2h 14m. I'm a tad disappointed and might go back to ICS just for the better battery life.
ROM: Unofficial CM10 by Lego
Lazy gov. Air kernel test 112.
The 2 hours of screen usage were from playing temple run, xda, and fb.

That's a good cycle IMO ^. Have you done a factory reset OP? Force of habit has me doing it anytime I do an update to avoid any issues. It also seems like you have a crappy signal at times. I haven't had a chance to actually judge battery life but mine seems to be on track to be about the same as it was as on ICS though.

It's weird because I'm using the same radio as on ICS and I seem to be getting worse signal on Jellybean? I might reflash a new JB ROM and try that instead.
I have a 2300mAh battery on stock JB i might upload some screenies later but i havent seen the battery life decrease it seems to be the same

Yeah. I'm gonna probably go back my KF1 radio once I update my ROM tonight.
IMO I always do a preliminary test the battery when the phone switch to airplane mode in a night, if the drain only 1% then the ROM is quite good.

Right? I miss the GB battery life, could leave GPS and 3g on all night, not touch it, and lose 2% in 10 hours. With ICS I was grateful if I could get it down to 1.5%-2% in an hour. And Google Now is too awesome to turn stuff off for, so JB is even worse

My battery life is absolutely horrible. I think my battery is bad though. I've had it since I got the phone. When the nexus came out.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Its one of those pay to play situations. My job has places for me to safely charge my phone so the battery isn't too big a deal for me. Best bet is to carry a spare charger. It is after all a pocket computer. Sucks, but until battery tech catches up, there isn't much us or many other smartphone users can do.
I think the background sync drains battery when idle. With sync on during idle, the batt drops ~3-6%/hr. If sync is turned off, it becomes ~1%/hr. (using 3G)
Exactly what Google things syncing would cause such a drain? I have this type of usage but all I have is Gmail syncing and I only get a few emails a day. I have obviously noticed increased life disabling Gmail, but how could it be using so much if it is push?
I'm getting, at least, the double than before...stock, unrooted
I don't understand this.....
The only thing using CPU is Android system at 5-15%... why is this happening? The screen was off for at least 8 minutes
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Since it just started up, and I'm guessing it is syncing like crazy. Calendar, instant upload if you have that in G+ or drop box chrome, contacts, drive, Gmail... Etc. Location is happening (maps, and latitude), checking for updates, weather. Check again in an hour and see if it has settled.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
I havent noticed a problem with my battery. It's actually been pretty much the same. I go almost the entire day not charging it on normal use (almost 12 hrs). Heavy use with me is constantly playing games, I get maybe 3-5 hrs depending on screen brightness. It's pretty much the same as ICS for me

[Q] Disappointing Battery Life

I got a Nexus 4 yesterday, and so far it has been excellent. Really fast and has all the features I want. The battery life is pretty poor though. I am at 28% with a screen on time of only about 2 hours. The total time is about 8 hours. I haven't been using it a lot. The main thing consuming battery seems to be Nova Launcher for some reason. I have it on my Nexus 7 and it doesn't decrease battery life at all, but it seems to use a lot more on here. It was at 24% according to GSam Battery Monitor.
I just followed a bunch of instructions for increasing battery life from various websites so I will see how it goes. I now have all the Google syncing disabled, location services off and brightness on auto.
Is there anything I should be doing? Why is Nova Launcher's usage so high?
Thanks,
EDIT: Could it be the widgets I am using? I have two Gmail inbox widgets, the messaging widget and the circle battery widget.
Same here though I'm not sure its nova, my battery got as bad as yours when i rooted to stock.

it could, or any other apps you have working in the background. it can also be how you use the device. but before you assume anything about your battery life, give it 3-4 battery cycles before it normalizes.

im ocd about that too, lol. the back button to kill is one of my favorite custom rom features. also, autostarts and greenify are both great apps to make sure that you have mich less ctap opening in the background. anyways, im a heavy user normally, battery life on the nexus 4 id never call bad. usually i get 3.5-5.5 hours screen on time, depending on use. but then again, i use a custom kernel thats optimized for performance and battery. but, stock rom/kernel isnt bad on battery.
I too Force Close all the social networking apps before sleeping and turn wifi off. And i daily get around 4 hrs of OST. Will attach pics later to show. So to get 4 hrs OST you need really need to have a custom kernel. Just optimize your usage and you are fine with the stock kernel.
Phone is totally stock. Not rooted. And i got 6 pages on Apps installed.
I even used to clear RAM every now and then but I just stopped doing it as I couldn't find it doing anything better.
The battery life is much better now. Yesterday when I got back from school it was at 40% or so, and today it was at 68%.
Gets better after a few battery cycles. My battery life was average, so I rooted and with matr1x kernel it's snappier and better battery.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
i'm stock and my battery life was shockingly bad on the default settings until yesterday when i tried some fixes and they have made things much better.
looking at my N4 right now, i'm still on 58% after 22 hours. that's after several voice calls, some browsing & reading emails, GPS navigation using Maps, a couple of skype video calls, wake-up alarms etc.
basic fixes as follows:
- screen brightness right down to maybe 10-15%
- data off when not being used, ditto location services
- NFC and BT off.
- i've left wifi on as it doesn't seem to take much battery if it's not being used.
that's all! after charging last night, i woke after 6 hours or so and was amazed to see it had dropped only 1-2%, so apparently nothing is waking it from sleep.
One thing that really improved my battery life (when I had a Nexus 4) and something I tell to anybody with poor battery life, is to go into maps, go to settings, location settings, and uncheck "report from this device". If you've got the app "wakelock detector" just watch the wakelocks from maps almost entirely disappear. It nearly doubled my battery life at the time.

Hey thx man that didn't work but it did start me down the path to fix my problem.
I found out it had something to do with my GPS options its in settings and location access WiFi and GPS location options i checked it off and now i am getting 1 hour screen on time for every %10 if you do the math i have about 8hours of screen on time! I also have setcpu app which is giving me about 48hours of standby time, i will upload some screens after a bit more testing.

My battery life is brill and i never turn owt off or force anything to close, it is only bad when i play a 3d game or something but what do you expect. over night it only drops about 1% every 4 hours which is a bit bonkers.

If you would like to risk such things as unlocking bootloader, rooting, installing custom ROM and kernel, then it'd be easier for you.
Personally, I've found codefireX ROM and faux123 kernel to be battery friendly and very responsive, but of course you've got to be a bit fixed on such things as playing with your devices and getting fun from it to do that

Record until now SOT 4H23
From 100% to 10%
About 25 minutes of Gaming and in that 15min of Asphalt 8 (Asphalt 8 is taking enormous amount of battery)
1h15 MP3 playing on bluetooth.
Then use browser and chatting, installing apps thought playstore.
Stock Rom.
It seems i cannot post links so i have to found a workaround
4GB/32GB storage model here, all stock, no root or anything, best SOT time i got is 4hrs 26mins. Sometimes if i use 3g/4g data i cant even reach 3hrs.
Great phone but this battery drain is way too massive. Pretty much putting a dent in what is a great phone experiance value/performance wise.

just upload on Picasa get the link and Post here, but if you delete pic there then it will not here,
So tapatalk won't let me link to photos that I uploaded to their servers because I have less than 10 post.
I managed to get 5 hours and 18 min sot with the phone lasting about 14.5 hours before hitting %5 battery. The screen had used %9 battery according to my battery stats, and android had used nearly %50.
CM 12.1 and DeathlyKernal
Yankactive governor/sioplus io scheduler
Max CPU freq 2333/min 500
I played some fallout shelter for maybe 30 min, and other than that, I just read stuff and looked at funny pictures at work. That little time I charged was me transferring some stuff from my PC to my phone.
5 hours and 18 minutes isn't too bad, although this sot seems to be an outlier for me, I usually get about 3-4 hours sot if I don't use my screen as much. It seems that the battery drains fast no matter what I do on it, whether it be using it or not. So if I use it as much as possible right after charging it, I get the best sot. I can't really get my phone to last longer than about 18-20 hours even if the screen doesn't come on.
I plan on experimenting with different ROMs and kernals to find the best battery life. The battery is definitely my biggest issue with this phone.
Wow, I'll do it too soon xD
The problem is pretty clear. It's the Android OS. This is a typical Lollipop issue which isn't fully solved on 5.1.
There are some posts on XDA which might help. Specially one restricting the Google Services via Privacy Gurad or XPrivacy. Can't test it for myself because still waiting for my ZF2. Did someone tried this?
(I'm in hurry and will post the links later)
I can sometimes get around 6 hours SOT
Prism Barebone & Project T
Underclock to 333mhz-1250mhz
Yankactive and sioplus 512kb
Greenify almost all apps, leaving essentials
Power Nap too with quite a number of essential apps whitelisted
On Wi-Fi (I didn't try on mobile data)
I call myself I moderate heavy user ?

Broke my own 'record'' today and reached nearly 5 hours. I will reach it if i dont charge it soon but i wanted to show the SOT at the same battery lvl as in my last post.
WiFi was on all day, chatting, some music and a few mins of gaming was today's session.

Battery Life on Recent Nougat OTA

Question.. How is everyone else's battery life been so far on Android N? Mine has been atrocious and it's mainly due to Bluetooth. I did a clean install by flashing the recent google image (MTC20F) in ADB then enrolling my Nexus in the beta program and getting the N OTA. I charged my phone to 100% then left for the gym around 5am, got home at 7:40am and my battery is down to 46% from just listening to Pandora, Spotify via bluetooth. Here are some screenshots.. I was getting significantly better battery life on Pure Nexus Rom.. Also, I am stock and not rooted or using any custom tweaks. It's 100% Stock

Try installing the EX kernel and disabling touchboost under the CPU settings. I get ~40 hours battery life with normal usage. If you tweaked the settings i am sure you would get 2 days easy.

Mine is doing the exact same thing as the op's. Bluetooth is just killing the battery too but I am on stock, not rooted or anything. I went from 89% to 26% in a span of 3 hours with Bluetooth and Spotify on in my car and at the gym. I have taken out almost all 3rd party apps, which seems to have helped but this morning as the Bluetooth was on (for Spotify and Waze) during my commute to work, it went right down to 75% from 100% in a span of 45 minutes and that's with the screen OFF. On Android M, the most it had gone down to was to 88%. 75% is ridiculous.
With Bluetooth off, the phone seems to be doing OK ? Android OS and Android System are eating up the battery.
I will do the factory reset tonight and hope for the best but this is the worst battery life I've ever seen on my phone.

There is a thread for just about every phone that has MM.
Look around for Android System and Android OS.
Not in LP.
I don't know what Bluetooth and android system/os issues you are mentioning, but I did a clean stock restore with factory images from Pure Nexus then took the OTA through system update, all was good, did a factory data reset, pushed twrp 3.0.2-1 then then supersu 2.76 and took most of the Google stuff I don't use out.
No issues what's so ever. Battery is great. I'm losing about 10% battery for every 45-50 min sot. And the new doze is working flawlessly. I lost 1% battery overnight in 7.5 hours. Yesterday Gsam battery monitor showed my phone was in light or deep doze in 7:20 out over 9.5 hours of charge with 2 hours sot.
I'm only rooted with some debloat and TiBu and battery apps gsam and wakelock detector
It's not BT guys. It's your music streaming. Bet if you moved to an app that uses on board music and tested it you would find you have better battery life.
I'm stock and not rooted with any mods.. Just find it weird.. On PN Rom my battery life was fantastic with Elemental X Kernel..

I don't think that's the issue seeing as how you can download your spotify playlist to your phone which I do.. Not to mention in my screenshot, Spotify wasn't the root of the issue, the Bluetooth was at 20%.. Nothing else was close..

Look at the cell connection. There are 2 major factors normally to battery drain. 1. SOT and 2. Cell connectivity. As an example. It doesnt matter how big of a battery I use or the device. I can easily kill the battery on any phone within 4 hours without even touching it due to cell signal.
Normally I would agree with you but in the screenshots I posted (not sure why they're so small), my SOT was only 16 mins and my LTE connection was at full strength. I never had these issues when I was using Pure Nexus Rom and I was using that ROM since October of last year with the same exact setup and haven't moved from my current apt.. Literally haven't done anything differently from that Rom to Nougat and for some reason, bluetooth is killing my battery. In the pics I posted where it shows what's eating battery, it was at 20% and the next thing was 9%.. Spotify was at 3% and Pandora was around 3%..

Custom roms change how things work like that. Like I noticed on a few roms they will throttle the data when the device is off.
Those stats really are kinda misleading. What ever you use the most will always be at top. No matter how much it uses. As an example. for 30 min say you use youtube the most and the next 30 you use spotify the most. You will see them swap off when you look at what is draining your battery.
Also you have to remember that with the new update many things have changed system wide. If it were me. I would pull a logcat. I dont have the official yet for my nexus 6 so still on the developer preview and I run BT all day long using power amp and it bearly touches the battery. Mind you that could just be issue with the 7.0 update which is why they are already working on 7.1 to be released in a few weeks.
Very good point.. I'll continue to monitor it over the next few days, if all else fails I will just go back to a custom rom and wait for 7.1... Thanks for the info

Here is my current SS. Yes it is only a couple of hours but I connect my BT headset the min I wake up and it stays on all day long.
That's how mine was when I was using a custom rom.. Never saw Bluetooth on there before and I used it often as well.. Not sure what the issue is.. It's really weird

Grab a logcat. Did you take an OTA or do a full complete redo for the update? I am shooting in the dark myself really. Just suggesting what I would do. I also dont use streaming music apps. I keep all my music on device for many reasons.
I did a factory reset. Thought it fixed my Bluetooth drain as I had Spotify on and Waze while connected to my car this morning. Usually by the time I get to work after 45-50 minutes, I'd be down to 88% from 100% (with a few 3rd party apps installed). Thought it was fixed as I only went down to 96% for the duration of my commute (with minimal 3rd party apps installed).
However, the Bluetooth drain showed up again when I connected my Bluetooth headphones for use in the gym. The drain was not as drastic as I reported earlier. However, it still took up a nice chunk and Bluetooth again is sitting at the top of my battery usage list along with Android System and Android OS. The phone is at least acceptable now but I have no idea why it is draining as quickly now when it never used to do this before when I was on Android M. It's not like I changed my routine or usage habits.
Also, I am on stock, not rooted or anything so really not sure what is going on. Maybe I will just wait for a patch or something.

14H Squeezed out of my S7

With a combination of Amplify, Greenify, BootManager, PowerNap, LSpeed, and TinySU
I managed to Achieve this amazing battery life.
I will try to share my settings ASAP.
(Keep in mind I was on lowest brightness)
I'm on a US SM-G930T (SD820).
Usually when I leave my phone in my pocket battery goes down as if I'm using it, but it managed to pull through.

That's not good battery life at all, 14 hours TOTAL, not SoT
SoT was only 22% of that, so around 3 hours maybe
I think I have good battery life.
See pics.
always wifi on, bt on, location on and data on.

Sent from my SM-G930F using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I have an S7 Unlocked US model. There's no 'carrier' bloatware thank god. But I am pretty sure Samsung makes up for it by adding their own. Before I ran three debloat scripts on this thing, there were about 325 apps installed on it. I would HATE to see the additional amount of crap a carrier would add to that.
So after flashing the three scripts, I got down to about 150 (include my apps probably about 165). That's beyond absurd and this type of 'bloat' should be illegal. Samsung, among the other manufacturers and carriers, are literally scamming everyone out of hundreds, if not thousands of dollars by doing this. I have a Motorola Droid Razr M XT907 (Verizon) originally running KitKat. It's been rooted forever. I recently paid Sunshine to unlock the bootloader and I flashed Lineage 13 to it (Marshmallow). It's manufacturer date was 2014. Life span of 1 1/2 years max. I increased it by 5 more at least. If this thing can handle even Nougat (tried that too), then this S7 can run a nuclear generator, but won't because of the crap on it. Bottom line: If they ever say you need a new phone because it's slow, they're scamming you.
Here's my settlement after 24 hours of rooting, debloating, tweaking and optimizing my G930U
- Flashed fresh, stock firmware: Marshmallow 6.0.1, first release, G930UUEU4API3
- Was FINALLY able to gain and hold root by following the steps located in the first section of this thread.
- After that I installed an UPDATED version of FlashFire via ADB.
- I opened FlashFire. Until you disable KNOX, SuperSU will be VERY slow to prompt you with the pop-up to grant root access to FlashFire (maybe a minute or so). Once access is granted, you can debloat and disable KNOX. This is the only root required app I installed at this point.
- In section two of the same thread, I downloaded and added the second .zip file, S7_or_S7Edge_Fixes_Debloater_V15.zip to internal storage (sdcard) and flashed it using FlashFire. I also downloaded this .zip, added it to internal storage and flashed it. I also went here and did the same with this .zip. (KNOX is disabled in the first flash so at this point SuperSU will function normally).
- IF YOU DO NOT DISABLE KNOX COMPLETELY YOU WILL LOSE ROOT!! Flash ALL 3 .zips to ensure KNOX is disabled!!
- I then disabled any other apps and or services I deemed fit and that suit my needs. If anyone wants me to I can compile a list of what I left installed.
- Installed Xposed following the 3rd step in the thread I linked twice already.
- Downloaded and installed HEBF - Battery Saver & Optimizer, selected a medium profile for Battery and medium for performance.
The difference is almost instant. On top of all the bloat, I can't believe how much battery this drains because of it.
Also AppOps <3

Check the battery stats thread, 2 days with 3 hours SoT is easy, also depends what you were doing with your phone while the screen was on, if not much, like WhatsApp or something low powered, then you can get way more than that
atm Samsung have caused a battery drain bug with the last 2-3 updates, but before that I was averaging 5-6 hours SoT easily, and could easily get 2 days usage from one charge

With being on unlocked firmware, without the carrier bloat, There were 330+ samsung apps on this thing. I was lucky to get 5-6+ hours on a full charge and it would feel like it was going to melt while using it. I got it down to about 135-140 apps. if you include the ones I downloaded, 161 apps. Installed HEBF battery optimizer and it runs as smooth as possible. I probably could get as much of a charge out of it now. Prior to that? I don't see that being remotely possible. There were too many apps doing too many things at almost a constant level. So i find it very very hard to believe someone got 2 days on a full charge with 330+ apps running in the background. It just isn't possible.

Just because your phone was a lemon for battery life does not mean everyone elses is, go read the battery stats thread and see for yourself, most people get 5 hours+ SoT without resorting to debloating
5-6 hours on a full charge is diabolical, no-one in their right mind would accept that as normal, that's about the SoT you should be getting with the phone in constant use, not entire battery life
And next to none of those apps you removed use any power in the background, there were 2 that used about 10% too much battery for my liking, OM Customise and KNOX, I disabled them and easily got 5-6 hours SoT, at a push I could get more with lighter usage
So don't make statements like "It just isn't possible", you don't own everyone's phone, you can only speak from your own, it is entirely possible and is easily accomplished with a normal non-defective S7
