if you're talking about a500w, you can take any rom (based on stock at least) and replace your boot.img in rom zip.
In ports i'm not sure if it needs custom kernel :good:

Question about Kernel.

Hello, I just rooted & S-off my Desire HD and trying different ROMs like RCMixHD and CM7. It has been great fun!
I understand ROM is like the OS of my phone, Radio is the part for network&call and RIL is like the bridge to connect ROM and Radio.
But what about Kernel? Is it like some kind of skin or what? Is Kernel independent to ROM? I mean can I flash any Kernel into any ROM or is it specifically for 1 ROM only?
And finally how can I flash a Kernel? Can I just flash it in ClockworkMod recovery / ROM Manager like flashing a ROM?
Thank you very much
Terence

Kernel is the source. Think of it a bit like DOS was to windows when windows was still DOS based. The ROM is the pretty graphical stuff built on the Kernel (very very very simplistic).
Pretty much flash any Kernel but as a rule most ROM's will use the most up to date. Then there are custom Kernels that have added goodies in them like over-clocking. Again, you can flash these over just about any recent ROM you find.

You can use Kernel Manager App or flash them in CWM Recovery. Could probably use ROM Manager but for Kernels I prefer to use recovery.

[Q] How to install kernel?

Hi,
I would like to get specific instructions in installing kernels, which i couldn't find anywhere.
I just installed CWM and want to install forumber2's kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912714
is it just like move zip to sd card and flash it, dont i need to wipe caches or anything? just choose and flash?

You should wipe cache first.. but you want to flash a kernel over and official rom? why dont you try a custom one?

trust me the official rom (at least the gingerbread version) has more "bugs" than most custom roms..

Hi,
Stock ROMS include kernels.
No need to flash separately.
Yeah that's what i thought too, but i am new with the s4 and saw those kernels serperated in the thread so i needed to ask.
Thanks for the answer :good:

Closet to Original Rom?

Hi, I have been looking for a Custom Rom with a Custom Karnel that has a closest look to the original rom. Does any one has any opinions??
tnx
I would recommend the following, because of my experience with them.
1. SaberMod or RasSaber (the first ROM comes with Saber-toothed-Squirrel kernel)
2. Purity (comes with Purified kernel)
You can find those, along with tons of other ROMs to choose from, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34474641
From your post I'm gathering that you don't want to mess around too much with the settings and just have a solid, stable system. The stock "look" is easily obtained by just flashing a new ROM and not touch anything in the custom settings, after all. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Lots of people are running stock rom (rooted) with a custom kernel... You can even find pre-rooted/bb'ed stock rom like this one:

CyanogenMod FTW!

Exactly, Thanks very much, I'm really tired with beta and non-stable roms and I want something stock-like

No such thing as a deodexed kernel. All custom ROMs are deodexed.

Most custom kernels are generally stable, have a look in the index thread:

franco and faux are both popular choices, although I find faux settings a little complicated...

[Q] Help with ROM

As you guys may know, I recently downloaded the latest matriz mod by mathkid...do you think I need a ROM installed to use at its full potential? If so, which ROM should I install and do I have to re-install the kernel?
1. U don't have to flash another ROM if you are on stock ROM or another AOSP ROM
2. Feel free to flash any ROM u want all AOSP based Ron's should work with this kernel.
3. If u flash another ROM u have to flash the kernel again because the stock kernel of the ROM will be flashed as well.
BTW. Post this kind of questions into the Q&A forum for the N4.

So I'm on Stock ROM right now. I don't need to redo the installation process and just flash it at will? Didn't know you can flash multiple roms too...
what roms do you guys recommend with the most with matr1x kernel?

matrix is not a rom, it is a kernel. all roms include kernels, or your phone would never work. all you do is flash matrix over what you have now, and itll replace your current kernel with matrix. that is all, do not over think it, do not make it more complicated then it actually is. and no, no one can tell you what rom to run, it is only your personal choice and no one elses. there are roms in the development section, read their threads, then you decide.

I know matrix is a kernel, I'm saying which one would be the most appropriate to go with it. One more question: Whenever there's an android update and I have flashed a Rom and Kernel, do I have to redo the flashing process again? ex. Android 4.4.4
