Hi guys.
First off, just got my hands on a Nexus 4 from T-Mobile. Got it at an awesome $45. You can't imagine the ecstasy I experienced when it got here and it was 16 GB. Going from my LG Optimus T to this is mind blowing.
Now, after researching, I'm at a standstill. According to every search I've made on this website, and on Google, the only way to root a Nexus running 4.2.2 is to unlock the boot loader. That's my first problem. I've found no guide through my searching that gave me a solid way to unlock it. Could someone link me to one?
Second, the rooting process. I've heard that it, as well, has no one solid way to be done on 4.2.2. Again, any help or links would be appreciated.
I can't wait to get a custom kernel and Cyanogenmod running on this. This is my Android dream come true.

Weird! We'll here's a link for you!
Use the nexus toolkit... While 4.2.2 isn't listed, select 4.2.1... It works.
Takes all of 2 minutes.

rooting any nexus device is the same. in a nutshell..
1. this one line typed into fastboot unlocks the bootloader.. fastboot oem unlock. then press yes on the device when the menu pops up.
2. fastboot flash a custom recovery, cwm or twrp.
3. flash either the su binaries or a custom rom with your new recovery.
4. reboot and profit.
thats the right way to root any nexus, on any version of android, even 4.2.2. there do exist different root toolkits, but i dont recommend them. they have their own issues plus you learn zilch.

Right. Duh. I forgot that I also read that the bootloader doesn't depend on whether or not you updated to 4.2.2. I'm blonde, you'll have to forgive me. Or not. Also, the Google link. That didn't help. That thread had dead links, so it's irrelevant.

The white from the light of the computer makes it hard to follow in some spots, also a lot of ppl prob don't know how to upgrade the Google USB drivers (I know simple but could not so adv ppl could get lost etc).

I notice people always say to turn usb debugging on but I've done it both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 and never turned debugging on for either one and it still works the same.

just bought the old N7 32gb for just under $200 last week. Decided that I don't need that much space and would rather have the better hardware so I'm returning the first gen and getting the latest 16gb version! :good:
Not sure if I missed it, but it should be noted that unlocking the bootloader wipes ALL your data!
Has anyone tried this using Clockwork instead of TWRP? Not a big fan of TWRP

If I just bought a nexus 7 from best buy today, do I have the 2013 version? I assume I do? Also, probably dumb question, but I assume 2013 nexus won't work with nexus 7 roms/kernels?

If you're serious about these questions then yes, it's the new one. You probably should have done your homework before even buying it if you had to ask after you bought it. Best Buy never even carried last years model.
No.. Don't use anything from the original N7 unless you want a nice heavy paper weight.
My suggestion would be to start reading everything on the 2013 model very carefully in these forums before you attempt to flash anything.
I'm not trying to be rude, but the above are how people get in messes. Especially if they have to ask the community what they bought.

Lol I look like an absolute fool. When I bought it I didn't think there was a new one, but after some research, I figured out that I obviously have it haha
I have read through all of the threads regarding root and will root it later tonight. My previous comment made me look like a complete noob, but I assure you I have rooted phones for years and understand the goings on. I was just confused at the time because as I said I didn't know there was a new model, I thought it was a firmware update or something.
I can't wait to see this attract devs that can bring amazing kernels and roms

you mention "fastboot.exe" in the video, but where do we get that? I keep getting "ADB not recognized as a command" when I type the command in the window.

I'm excited to say that I have finally invested in a tablet and decided to go with the Nexus 7 that I bought for a GREAT price! I am curious about rooting and s-off etc. I was curious if there was any information that I needed to be aware of in regards to not being able to root or s-off with updates. I would really like to have a smooth experience with accomplishing root on my Nexus but I know there could be some bumps in the road . Any information or links to threads etc. are much appreciated, I haven't unboxed yet just due to the fact that I want to make sure I can root it without it auto updating something.

Just be sure the toolkit updates itself to latest version.
You need to first "unlock the bootloader". I would recommend to do that in the beginning because it will wipe your device.
Personally i had best experience with stock kitkat 4.4.4 rooted and all unneccessary software disabled. I dont like volume adjustment on lollipop 5.0.2 but i always update to latest version just for fun.

IMHO the best thing with Nexus is you'll always get the latest official rom. I have only used stock but feel free to experiment.
On my phone with 4.4.4 I use stock with xposed framework. Some great modules there. However i read that xposed is not yet ready for 5.0.2.

I suggest the elementalx kernel. And if you want a (improved) stock experience go for Cleanrom.
From what I remember from my HTC Wildfire days, S-OFF = Unlocking the bootloader.
If I'm wrong, can someone explain the difference

S-Off is a HTC thing. Here you dont need to S-Off.

Can you confirm something. When did you get your Nexus 7 and from where. There have been problems with recently released Nexus 7 tabs from Groupon, Frys, and Best Buy that have made things difficult to do things like flash. There was a revision in google/asus latest batch that makes mounting any partitions/memory difficult.

Just out of curiosity, and to just make sure we are all on the same page. You got the 2013 (2nd gen) Nexus 7, correct? Being this is your first Nexus Device, and tablet if you weren't aware there is a Nexus 7 2012, and 2013.
Probably a dumb question, but don't want to link you to all these things and have you brick your Nexus because it was the wrong gen. Enjoy, thing is awesome.

I have been running CleanROM since I have been able to flash. Smooth, snappy and very stable I highly recommend the ROM to those that have not flashed it yet.

I got my Nexus 7 close to two weeks ago from Wal-Mart for an AWESOME price. They had it on sale for $125 and I had to grab it, there was no way I was going to pass up on that deal. I have only flashed CleanROM on my N7 so far and I haven't had any issues. Thanks for the links!

Thanks for the info. I'm still doing a bunch of reading trying to learn as much as I can being this is my first tablet. This device can do so much I'm trying not to get ahead of myself. If I wanted to flash a new rom/kernal what should I wipe in TWRP and in what order? Thanks in advance.

Its been a month... So I assume you are sorted but in case you aren't... To ensure cleanest install, wipe data and cache through twrp then flash new ROM. This will delete your data so back it up first if there is anything you want on it.
If ROM is from same family.... You can try dirty flashing ( ie not wiping data ) but it may end in boot loop or force closes in apps... I always just wipe as it ensures clean install to give you best experience with the ROM.

About roms.
Either stock/CM. I am using cm12.1 latest build on android 5.1.1 with elementalX kernel. Very smooth.
Remember:TWRP>>>>>>>CWM
Every ROM is good that I've flashed. Only had this about a week but loving it.
My phone is a lg and is a pos when it comes to **** not working with aosp

Does this have anyone else concerned? I was excited to get back into the Nexus game so I could power on my new 6P and be rooted 10 minutes later.
It will not. You need a custom kernel. It's fine, someone made a modified boot which is stock and just permissive, easy sauce

No worries! I just flashed the modified boot image and then Super SU 2.50 and after that the kernel I wanted to use on my Nexus 9! Everything went fast with TWRP

Nexus 5X/6P allow the unlocking of the bootloader.
The article has no effect on rooting a Nexus device. It may have ramifications for locked down devices.

It's a nexus. Nuff said.
I got root on stock Marshmallow. Flashed hells-Core and SuperSU 2.49 using TWRP. As soon as I hit "reboot system" TWRP said it noticed I had an unmodified boot image and offered to modify it for me. I allowed it to and it's been working fine for 36 hours now.

Yes you can root it but one more step u need to do for complete root access
they won't do anything to completely disable root and unlocking bootloader cause it s Open Source
u should do adb unlock for bootloader and then install boot img in fastboot and u good to do more...

As others have said - no need to worry.
I'm running Marshmallow rooted, works perfect.
This is only an issue with devices that have bootloaders that can't be unlocked. For now.

you need to know that there are 3 versions of the phone. A2017 (chinese), A2017G (intl) and A2017U (USA). I don't really know the exact differences, but keep in mind that the A2017U has probably the best support and has the most ROMs and kernels and stuff available. The A2017 comes, from what I've heard, with a recovery in Chinese. And the A2017G has development and stuff but you definitely want to avoid bricking it (DFU mode might need you to disassemble the phone). Besides from that the guides are well written, for example the one I used for my A2017G was okay (from Controllerboy). Everything's explained. If you find something that's not evident send the guide link here and ask.
I just got this phone today too. Man I don't see why anyone's even rooting this... It's working great for me. I spent a couple hours in settings, setting up Nova, and all that, and I'm really amazed by this phone. Stock Antutu and it's scoring 155k! Very fluid phone too. I got scared during delivery, because I started reading horror stories about this phone, and development it seems like there's always something broken or not working correctly. I really really don't see the need to mess with the software one bit! I would recommend sticking with stock just to see how you enjoy it, before taking any risks. I used to be a flashaholic, but after marshmallow, the need isn't really there anymore. Android has become so smooth, rooting has lost most of its novelty. At least that's my opinion.

There are a lot of reasons to root it. Maybe you are just used to the Cyanogenmod ROMs ans don't want to use any of the proprietary ROMs and Launchers. XPosed Framework, adblock, VPN, custom CA Certificates and Linux arm with VNC in the background are only some of hundreds of reasons to root your phone.

There are obviously reasons for root, BUT i am with you on this one. I have personally not found a reason to root yet. And that means a lot coming from me, as i am a real ROM-whore and update-slut. The firmware suits my needs perfectly, i have a 2017U with firmware B029 installed. Oh and do check @bkores tookit! It rocks!

Hey does your rootkit work with a phone that can't access adb? Like I was looking at the EDL method of returning my Axon 7 to stock for an RMA exchange. I am exchanging it because mtp/quick charge/adb does not work anymore. Fastboot still works.

The bootloader unlock and restore stock options both use EDL.

I've had this problem before. It's because I updated an "N" version of Windows without installing the latest media feature pack. If you have an "N" version of Windows, make sure to install the media feature pack.

I am aware of that issue but this is something else. Quick charge doesn't work at all and adb doesn't either. In fact a buddy of mine plugged his Axon into my computer and it worked just fine so..
I just got this phone today and it came with 6.0.1 MM B29. I am pretty impressed by the features that ZTE has added in to their stock UI. I hear that has gotten better with the N updates.
If I OTA update bone stock to N B25 and decide I miss root, I can go back and downgrade to N B19 via various methods and unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root, and custom ROM etc?
