US Cellular Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge SM-G920R and SM-G925R4 ROM Development - Galaxy S6 Edge General

Hello all,
I would like to raise a simple question today, as to ask WHY does the USC Variant of S6 and S6 Edge DO NOT receive any attention from the devs?I I have seen so many roms and different developments for probably EVERY variant of the S6 and S6 edge but NOT the US Cellular?? Is there any major hardware difference (which I dont see) or something else? Its really disturbing to have a BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED device and yet be so deprived of custom roms.
Thank you, please respond with reasons if someone can.

the chip is not developer friendly.not worth blowing knox for this.im on the sm-g925f .and i wouldend have blown my chip if i had knowen the lack of development.so if you have a intact knox keep it as your going to have more issues with nougat 7.many app relay on knox and more to come.

I dont have nougat since USC hasnt released the update yet, and since I once flashed a wrong Google Pixel based rom on it, my knox is probably tripped, PLUS I dont care about KNOX since I dont ever use mobile pay or related services, I will be more then happy to kick Knox out of my phone as a matter of fact
Anyways, If Exynos is not dev friendly, how did the devs release roms for AT&T, Verizon, TMob etc carriers? They sport the same chip, dont they?
Anyways thanks for the response!

A question slightly out of the topic, CAN I FLASH A ROM FOR OTHER GS6 EDGE VARIANT ON USC?? If Yes, WHICH VARIANT ROMS CAN WORK ON THIS ONE?

All ROMs I tried on my s6 edge never worked, even the unified ROMs. The touchscreen never worked which was from the kernel and unknown baseband version. If we had some custom kernels this might solve the issues if not the touchscreen issue.

As the title says might switch to verizon when the s6 releases. Coming from and at&t s5 with bootloader being locked and updates slow. I wanted your guy input.
How long was it for you guys to achieve root? Unlocked Bootloader?
And of course hows development going? Is it still Alive ?
Thanks guys for your input.

We achieved root on June 15, 2014. I'm pretty sure that was the same time as the AT&T version.
We have not unlocked the bootloader.
Check out the Development subforum and you'll see we only have a small handful of developers going. They are wonderfully talented/dedicated, but a small group.
But keep in mind - this is the S5. The S6 could be totally different, with either TONS of development or none at all. Or it could be very similar. Each phone is different and it's just a matter of what catches on. You won't know until after it's out.

The chances for root for the VZ S5 were slim anyway and it took Geohot to break it. Forget about bootloader, it will most likely never happen. Same thing with root of the S6

No, Samsung definitely will not unlock their bootloader for non-dev handset (if they even still make the dev version). My point is I doubt anyone will be able to unlock it...
I'm hoping for Dev. Ed. S6, like the S4 and S5 before it.

i hear you guys and even if the s6 would never get root i think i can live with that as long as there would be reasonable timed updates. the main reason for me to root would be to flash a rom that has a new update that a stock ota would take months behind.
i think sunday i will get my answer when we will see the specs on both m9 and s6 and would just have to make up my mind.

Root Galaxy s7 edge

hello all, can somebody advise me how to root my new galaxy s7 edge using a Mac? It seems like all the best software out there is Windows only at this point. Thanks for the help in advance

You can't root the AT&T Galaxy S7 Edge - you can't root any AT&T android phones from what I understand.
They have locked the bootloader - Haven't been able to root for a few generations now.
Your best bet is the international variant or a T-Mobile Unlocked variant.

The locked bootloader has definitely slowed down development of rooting methods but so far it's still been possible. I've had an S3, S4, S5 and S6 and all have been rooted.
Personally I do believe there'll be a root exploit for the S7 Edge but it'll soon be patched.
If so then once you're rooted don't plan on taking any updates the exploit will be patched and that'll be it.
There'll be no custom kernels or TWRP.
FlashFire should work though and with that possibly Xposed with some modding possible.
All of this is purely conjecture of course.
There's a real possibility of no root at all as well.

So far there isn't any root available for any S7 Edge devices .
If there is eventually I'm assuming that yes Samsung Pay will not function.

Yup, from my understanding - if you root at all, EVER - Samsung Pay will be permanently disabled on that device.
Most root options will kill the KNOX chip which is needed for NFC security causing no payment options to work over NFC.

Uh...my AT&T Nexus 6 is rooted. Development has really dropped off, but I wouldn't say it's definitely not going to happen. I really want the S7 Edge, but the lack of the ability to root is making me hold off. I'm a huge impulse buyer and this is making me nuts LOL.

I finally broke down and bought it. Im coming from an HTC M8 and have flashed roms on every android I've owned. Didnt want to wait for new Nexus or M10 so I broke down and just bought a phone. I finally think im over the modding stage of phones because they just work like they should now. Finally!

I agree. I've never had an Android phone that wasn't rooted, but I have yet to see a reason to even root the S7. I realize there are hardcore modders out there that just need root, and that's cool and maybe someday (if root is available) I will root this phone as well. I just haven't seen a need for it yet.
For me, the biggest reason to have root on a Samsung phone is their poor track record with providing updates especially on carrier branded phones.
I still carry an AT&T Galaxy Note 2 and have full Android Wear integration because I have root and can install good custom ROMs.

OR MST as it will kill Samsung Pay all together
When I first got my S5 from at&t, I, of course, rooted it as soon as it was possible. It came with that lame ISIS card (that American Express) changed the name for obvious reasons to soft card. It used NFC and I could use it when rooted through an app in xposed to grant access.
This was all done with a locked bootloader. Seems like with each new phone it becomes more and more difficult, but usually find some kind of workaround.
I never tripped KNOX. It's still 0x0.
Regarding KNOX, it's my understanding that there have been some root exploits on previous generation phones that did not trip it. Is that incorrect?
I'm hoping something will come around for the S7 that will leave KNOX intact. I've never really used any NFC payment methods and could definitely live without them, but it does seem to me that this is the generation where Samsung Pay, Android Pay, etc, are really going to come into their own. . . .

It isn't root that trips Knox it's flashing a custom recovery and or custom kernel and since the bootloader is locked down tight I doubt seriously if we have to worry about that.
If there will be a root for the G935A FlashFire doesn't trip Knox and will work if a dev will build a Stockish T/W Rom.
Actually I'd be happy to root just for Xposed so I can use 3minit battery mod and center clock

Agreed. While A small part of me misses CM, I actually don't mind the TouchWiz on the S7. I would be happy staying stock and being able to run a few root apps. Titanium Backup, BBS, etc. . . .
Seems like folks keep tossing in that the phone may never get rooted. . . . Has that really happened with any of the flagships? It seems like most phones do eventually get opened up.

Did you even bother to read what I linked? Instead of making guesses, why don't you actually do a little research. It's not the Qualcomm SOC, because the htc 10 can be unlocked. Here's another article that says it's Samsung:

There's hope that our incredible devs will find a root exploit, just need a little bit of patience. The China/HK version of the S7 and S7E are also SD820 but with unlockable bootloaders so there's already some development happening
AFAIK the problem is that Samsung USA and the carriers have decided to enable a couple features on the 820 that make flashing non stock images impossible meaning no custom recoveries, roms etc

Well not entirely, as I understand it if root is attained through an exploit the system will effectively be able to be modified bypassing the bootloader unlock requirementrequirement.

T-Mobile firmware to an Official Samsung

Hey Guys.
So I'm about to get a new S7 Edge from T-mobile tonight.
I understand there are several roms out there for different versions of the device, am I right?
Is there anyway I could get rid of the official T-mobile rom and install instead the official/international Samsung one, something without all the garbage of the carrier and that will be future update directly by Samsung?
Will appreciate any lead
Thanks Guys!
No root. No firmware. No fun for anyone. This is the new korean samsung. All that's missing is a high Hitler, and your set
I'm coming from the Nexus world, so I'm sorry in case I'm mixing between the definitions here.
I case I'm not looking to root, just load another system img on the device, instead of the crappy t-mobile one.
No way to do it right now?

No. Even with root, Samsung was never one to allow other firmwares on different models. If they existed, they were outliers and not the norm.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/best-to-root-how-to-screw-stock-s-t3394517
This is a very good guide to getting a more unbranded feel.
I would add that you can change your screen dpi through ADB (though the stock camera won't be full screen afterwards).
The US S7s are a special breed of S7s relative to the rest of the world, using Qualcomm rather than in-house chips and not having a bootloader unlock solution.
It might be possible to do more debranding (in the sprint S7E forum, they found a debrand function that may or may not work on t-mobile S7s to take off carrier customizations) but, assuming you are using t-mobile, you're better off using the package disabler than risk losing volte/video calls/wifi calling (the only reason to bother with a t-mobile S7 over international).

They are ODIN'ing different versions of the 935F firmware internationally to get Samsung Pay and other apps, but they have a different processor - so you would brick your device if you tried. You might be able to use US AT&T formware, but cannot see any reason to try.
There are also custom ROMs out for the 935F - but you have to be rooted to flash them, which is not possible hereon the 935T yet and my never be the way things are (not) going.
Got you all, thank you guys for the response!
For now, I disabled all Samsung and Tmo useless apps, and installed Google Now Launcher instead of Touch Wize.
Hopefully these steps will do the job for now.
Thanks again!
Nowadays phones don't need root they work very well out of the box. I understand the need for it (custom roms, etc...) but I haven't rooted a personal phone of mine in a while. Just disable what you don't wanna use and enjoy the phone.

What model S8+ do you have? The international Exynos versions have root, custom recovery, ROM's, custom kernels, etc.... The US/Canadian Snapdragon models up until today had none of this. It looks like that as of today devs have achieved root for the Snapdragon S8+ after a long, hard battle, but the method still has to be packaged and released.
If you do end up flashing custom recovery/ROMS?etc, you will trip Knox.

You do have the international Exynos model S8+ (with Samsung's UFS 2.1 storage, you lucky bastard!), so root shouldn't be an issue. You will however loose the ability to use Samsung Pay, Samsung Pass, Secure Folder, and anything else that uses Samsung Knox/Pay.
I believe there are a few threads in the Guides section here to walk you through the root process. I have a US Snapdragon model (w/ the slower Toshiba UFS 2.0), so I cannot attest to how these methods work, if they're reliable, etc., but I imagine you shouldn't have too much of an issue.

No problem. You shouldn't have any issues with the camera or photography or anything like that...as long as it's not security/payment related you are golden.
As far as known problems go, I don't have that particular model so I couldn't really comment on any issues intelligently. You may want to check out the Q&A section for you model to see what other people have to say. Of course, Samsung makes a s**t ton of these things, so you're always going to be able to find people online that have like some major glaring issue, but you may not be affected by it at all.

EDIT: Do not forget, tripping Knox does void your warranty, and there's no undoing it...It's permanent. For what that's worth...

It could vary depending on region, but not that I know of...at least not on my US T-Mobile model. It had like 1 audio file though, which I deleted IMMEDIATELY.
