Clock appears on lock screen when the phone is moved - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Just got a G5 Plus yesterday.
When the phone is at rest, if the surface moves or I pick it up without touching the finger print sensor or the power button, the clock/battery/date appears very dimly on the screen and disappears after a few seconds. Is there a way to turn this feature off? I have searched for ways to turn it off but haven't found a way yet.
I'm worried that when I work out with the phone in my pocket, the motion will wake up the phone and the sweat/heat will accidentally call 911 or something even though I haven't pressed any buttons.
Thanks

It's called Moto Display. To turn it off, go into the Moto app and hit display. I've used it for years and I don't think the phone ever was unlocked while in my pocket. If you have a password/pin or fingerprint set up, it's almost impossible to become unlocked in your pocket.

To add onto this. If it's in your pocket the display isn't turning on due to the proximity sensor being blocked by the pocket. You can test this by holding your hand in front of the earpiece for 5 seconds, remove it and the screen will turn on. The screen will also turn on if for example you pick it up from a table.
EDIT: Didn't see that he mentioned this in the OP. It's perfectly normal. Would also like to add I've had the Moto x which has the same features for years and it never accidentally unlocked or called anyone. And I didn't even have a password set on it.

It's a great feature. It's the sole reason I'm sticking with the stock rom.

It's the main reason I go with moto phones now. All the other companies are starting to do it though but you can't get those phones for cheap like the g5 plus.

Operating as designed

I miss my g4 plus. It was stolen. Can anyone send me an APK for the Moto display of g5 plus. I want to use that on my phone ( Honor 6x). Wish it works. Thanks.

first thing i turn off.

Ambient display/moto display works fine on custom ROMs and is configurable.

Can you tell me which ones? I was under the impression the stock rom had a separate processor set aside just for moto display which meant longer battery life

I turned this off because while driving at night and the phone rest in the passenger seat or on my lap/on the seat between my legs, the display would keep lighting up in response to vehicle movements. Too distracting.

Is there a setting to make that clock brighter and stay on a bit longer PLS?

Wife' X keeps hanging up calls with face

The proximity sensor seems to work. Is there a call screen replacement with a slider to hang up?
whens shes talking lock the screen via the power button and walla
If you're rooted, there are many applications that change the proximity delay in the build properties.
You could try that.
Or ya, manually turn the screen off with the power button.
My mother has owned her X as long as I've had mine (since day 1) and still hangs up on me almost every conversation.
I personally just angle the phone slightly away from my face along with the sensor delay changes I mentioned.
If she is like my wife she doesn't hold the ear piece to her head while she talks (thus the proximity sensor thinks she isn't near the phone), then she hits the screen on her cheek and hangs up on people.
Tell her to learn how to talk on the phone properly.

Yeah, and report back on how sore and stiff you are from sleeping on the couch!
I don't understand why anyone would want to hold a device the size and temperature of a smartphone to their head.
I started using a BT headset when I bought my Treo 700P and have been using one since.
I actually did sleep on the couch last night, different reason.
I ended up teaching her to use the power button to turn off the screen.

Sounds fun.
She no longer hangs up on a call she answers but she constantly mutes calls that she makes now. My phones rings and I'm like hello...hello...
Sell it and get a Razr flip phone. At this point there is no more help.
Let me guess, Blonde?

Knock knock not as responsive waking up...

Sometimes I have to knock knock twice in a row to turn on the device. It works well turning off, but on half of the times it won't turn on. Gotta do it twice. Anyone else encounter this?

I do not have that issue, but I have read in a few posts that it can be dependent on where you are knocking on the screen.

I think the biggest issue is knock speed.... mine works damn near 100% when I slowed down some, and knock slower like it showes at the end of the G2 commercials....
I think it's partially related to the proximity sensor. There are times when I can't get the knock on to work at all and when I hit the power button the screen shuts right back off.
Usually a few swipes over the sensor makes it work again. Sometimes I'll go in and turn the Knock On gesture off and back on and then it seems to work great for a while too.

This is my exact problem. The phone just decides it doesn't want to wake up with knock-on...but after I press the power button, it only turns on for half a second and it's out again. I never tried swiping over the sensor, but hopefully it works because it's mighty annoying when it does it during a call!
I wonder if there's a fix for this?

this, if you are trying to do it like you did on the nokia n9 or nokia 8800 then it won't work
slow deliberate knocks are the only way
waiting on the g2 to arrive, but on my review unit, knock knock wouldn't respond correctly if i left the phone on the table, but if i picked it up, it would work nothing scientific here just an experience of one person and one prototype
I had the same issue... What fixed it is: 1. I found that the screen protector was hindering it somewhat. 2. Go to settings->display->screen-off effect-> and change it to simple. This REALLY seemed to help. Let us know!

I did notice it does seem to behave better when set to simple for the screen off animation.
My screen protector does have a cutout around the sensors. Keeping the sensor area clean enough to qualify as having OCD does seem to make it work properly the first time, every time. Maybe it's overly sensitive?
Edit: Scratch that. 30 seconds later it's behaving erratically again. Maybe it's not the fact that it's clean, but the swiping over the sensor that temporarily resolves it.
it also seems to work much better when knocking at the top of the screen where the statusbar would be.
So I ended up swapping the phone out over the weekend for a new one and now everything seems to work just fine. Seems to indicate that it's not a software problem, but rather a hardware issue with the proximity sensor.
Guys if your covering the sensors when turing the device screen on it will turn right back of on you. It's a feature LG implemented so the device wouldnt wake up in your pockets. Don't cover the sensors.
Need a little example? Grab your phone and cover the sensors and knock knock knock. You can knock till the cows come home but it will not turn on. Same thing goes for the power button but its a little delayed and will turn the screen on for half a sec and turn right back off. Practice not to do this because your phone isn't broken. There is actually a thread on this deep in the forums somewhere but its been forgotten now.

This is true however there are indications of problems with the proximity sensor as well. Some of the devices are behaving as if tree sensor is covered even when it's not.

Thanks for this.. Very insightful.. I tried it immediately LOL
I had the same issue. I have no case or screen protector on, and was not covering the sensor when trying to wake the phone. For some reason though, knocking wouldn't wake the phone, and pressing the power button would only turn the screen on for a few seconds. I want even given enough time to get past the unlock screen. I went into the store and they are sending me a replacement that should come in later this week. It doesn't happen all the time. It is much more noticeable after receiving a call though.

Definitely is dependent on the proximity sensor. If i just have my thumb on the edge of the phone by the sensor it will display this problem. Even with my finger a half to one inch above it will do this. I will be paying close attention to the proximity sensor from now on when it doesn't work. Still have a few days to return and thought i had an issue but maybe not.

sometimes its also greasy fingers, at least in my case, rarely though
As long as you tap twice the same place it's working fine. If distance between first and second tap is greater than 1 - 1.5 cm it won't work.
Got the same problem on my d802...when i left the phone on my table for 2-3min it wont wake up on first knock knock even power key wake it up for 1sec after auto turn off again....even with no screen protector....i noticed that sometimes there is a delay about 5-10sec after knock knock and screen turns on....other thing i noticed when i knock on immediently after turning off it works 100%....BUT i also noticed when i knock on after a while it turns on and i can unlock got vibration and sound of the unlock but i cant see anything. Screen looks like its off but when i look closely i can hardly see widgets and when i set effect to tv out i can see the effect by pressing the power button...when i press the power button again screen turns on like normal...i noticed sometimes on a rerboot the lg bootlogo disapears the led is working an showing all colors but the boot animation is gone like the screen is off at the bootup...dont know why after the bootup the pin lock screen is showing up normal....sorry for my english^^

Hand wave to wake lock screen does work ! Well kind of

Hello everyone this is my first post here.
I just upgraded from a Moto X XT1060 to the newer Moto G 3rd Gen 1GB/8GB XT1540 two weeks ago, And found out that it does have a hand swipe to wake the Moto Display but it only works once every lock screen cycle.
I'm assuming this behavior is a bug, Can anyone else test this for me ?
1. Make sure Moto Display is on and set the phone on a table, let the screen go black, wait 2min.
2. Now swipe your hand over the screen about 1/4inch from the glass, Walla !! screen turns on ! woohoo ! lol
3. Now hand swipe again, Yep it doesn't work anymore....
4. Now unlock the screen to show your main home page etc.
5. Now set the phone back on the table and let the screen turn off again, Wait 2min and repeat hand swipe, Works again lol ! but again only works once.
Anyone else seeing this ?
No it doesn't work for me.

That is moto display, the moto g 2015 shouldn have swipe to unlock.
not working for me
Tested under these conditions :
1) Moto display ON
2) Layed it still on bed , table.
3) waved my hand really close to it several times, and i touched with out disturbing it on every spot ..
Result :: Not working wave gesture,
NOTE: if ur device moves in x,y,z directions even a little.. the moto display gets active ONLY ONCE.
Well weird lol my moto g is bugged or something.
I do have both hand gestures turned off, Both the camera twist and chop for Flashlight are off, Wonder if that's why I have this bug.
I hope someone else posts this same behavior or I guess ill be forced to return it since it could be a defective product. Would any of you return it for this bug ?
No go for me either. OP are you sure you're not somehow moving the phone when you wave your hand by it? I mean it only takes an ever so slight movement to active the Moto Display, so if you're waving your hand 1/4 inch from the screen maybe wind is moving the phone causing it to work?
Proximity sensor can activate moto display to.
I'm sure I'm not moving the phone when i wave my hand over it, I'm also sure it is the proximity sensor.
But can anyone check this, I didn't run Google play store to update apps yet so I'm thinking its because of that it hasn't updated the Moto app. Which in turn is something else that's strange, Within the first 12hours of setting it up it only updates like 13 apps etc. then after 12 hours of sitting the Google play store is offering more to update like Moto boot and some others, Weird that letting it sit for 12hours it then is offering more to update very strange.

yeah, that might be the case, when i got the mobile the 1st moto app used to behave strangely.. that was infact good and less intelligent
1) BEFORE:when i power on torch using Chop CHop it used to be ON till i OFF with either Chop-chop or manually turn off. that is the only case to turn off.
NOW : if i keep the phone idle without disturbing it in Flipped/regular way it stops automatically after 2 seconds or so..
2) moto display also became more agressive, while i am sleeping if bed's cushion goes down even a little it would lit up .. that was a little annoying.
These are the things i had seen changed..
so.. i am sure that updates had changed the behaviour of Moto App, that might also be the reason.. i will try to uninstall updates and check it
---------- Post added at 08:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:45 AM ----------
Yo genius it works
i had uninstalled the Updates and now the proximity seems to be working but it just Lights up the moto display, and quickly turns off the display
and that i call it a WORKING
if you update your Moto app, this will be GONE
Tested conditions :
1) on a table, by keeping a haircomb near to it for a second and removed it with out disturbing the mobile
2) On the bed same with my hand on the proximity sensor or a second and removing it
NOTE: i am not waving my hand over it, it seems like i am not perfectly waving it else it would also work ..
Awesome thanks !, So it only does the hand wave once then doesn't do it again until you go to home screen then let it fall back to sleep ?
I noticed my twist motion has become far more sensitive, as well...I'm forever opening my camera by accident. Especially when I take my phone out of my pocket.
All the Reviews I've read for this phone were saying the same thing that the twist for camera is sensitive.
Whenever I wave my hand over it, it wakes up for about 3 seconds then turns right off. I woke it 3 times in a minute.
Not unlocked but awake.
I'm using gestures in Moto and in Res Remix ROM.
So your using a custom ROM with your Moto G 2015 ? and it lets you do the wave more then once per lock session ?
It works very well just you need to wave your hand over proximity sensor and it will wake your phone.

Is it just me or Moto Display is way too much sensitive

Just got my MXPE and i really like the phone
I noticed that if I'm walking with the phone in my hand (instead of in my pocket) the screen continuously turn on and off. I guess it is bad for battery life.
If the phone is on the table, any movement, even slightly movement (without waving my hand on the IR sensors ) turns the screen on again...
isn't it too much sensitive?
Is this the way it should work?
Thanks

I have the Moto X Pure and have the same gripe. From what I have read if Moto display is turned on the screen wakes with any movement. I have always kept my phones in a custom mounted cradle in my truck and it comes on every 30 seconds while driving. It is way too sensitive. They need to have an option to have the handy "approach" action active without the accelerometer being active. I love the Moto display concept but I had to disable it because it is very annoying while driving.

Screen turning on randomly seems to have been solved

I went to the Moto app and turned off the ambient display and I've noticed that for the past 12 hours my screen hasn't been lighting up anytime I jiggle the phone
That's basically what it's supposed to do. The screen will turn on and display the clock and notifications whenever you pick it up. It'll turn off once you put it back down.
i realize that but it was causing my screen to turn on when i wouldnt be touching it or when it was in the dashboard holster.

That's because it relies on the gyro to detect when you're lifting up the phone. Sometimes, when you unintentionally move the phone, the gyro triggers the ambient display.
Its not a perfect system, and a lot of work needs to go into it, but for most users its fine. Best part? You can turn it off if you don't like it.
Cheers.
