Flood twitter with complaints of bootloader - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discus

John Legere is big user of Twitter and other active social media. We should flood his inbox and social media with requests for getting this phones bootloader unlocked. He promised to help with the last one and should be more than willing to help put traction on this.

Honestly I don't think John Legere can do anything about Samsung bootloaders now days. Think about it, Samsung expended millions of dollars in their Samsung pay and Knox all together. Samsung doesn't want unlocked bootloaders at least on the USA market due to once you unlocked your bootloader the majority of people root their phones, once you unlocked your bootloader and root your phone you tripped the efuse, once you tripped the efuse, Samsung pay and Knox is not going to work.
Believed or not Samsung pay is very popular here in USA, and Knox is very successful on businesses and corporations.
Believe me, Samsung doesn't want to loose all those profits, from the investment they did on Samsung pay and Knox program, at least not for a handful of people here at XDA. We are probably only 1% or less of samsung customers.

Correct. We tried this many times before tovno avail. They straight up ignore us.

Ugh, when? Because the first time it got so much traction the dev bootloader was released, wasnt it? I actually work for T mobile and follow John religiously. If enough people ask, he will put Samsung on blast.

It didn't work with S7 and S7 Edge, it won't work for S8 nor S8 plus

Loving the enthusiasm here. You guys are a bunch of optimists! Definitely seeing how things get done around here.
Also, root and debloated roms were available for the S7 and Edge because a developer bootloader made it's way onto the internet. Now, I'm not sure t mobile had anything to do with that, but the ground work and traction John laid help make that possible.

Hope so

Nothing lost in trying, no sense in crapping on it before even trying. Worst case samsung says no, best case John succeeds and we very the dev bootloaders with a legal disclaimer absolving samsung and tmo from responsibility. But asking needs to happen to KNOW the end result.

Don't let him fool you - I think he is close to 100% responsible for the locked US Tmo bootloaders. He only pretended to try and help last time. I got the same runaround from him/them on service issues related to their press releses that all towers were upgraded last fall.
The best fix is too late for those who have foolishly purchased another TMo branded phone - get a 955f. There are no bootloaders locked over there - they would not put up with it.
Custom ROMs have KNOX and android pay working, and saftynet passed on S7s and most of it already working on S8's

If you think there was a meeting in which he decided not to unlock the bootloader of a device, you're probably wrong. He's a CEO, not a phone security expert. Someone else made the call, and there isn't any real corporate reason to even reconsider it.

The international models don't support WiFi calling which is s big deal for those of us traveling internationally.

It was shielded by some mods.
However, it looks like Samsung has further tightened up KNOX and it is not working again.

Unlocked Bootloader

Seems as my ATT S7E Silver from AT&T came with an unlocked bootloader, I am able to enable OEM Mode.
If anyone has any methods to fully check if it's unlocked please lmk, not sure if this is some sort of glitch or something?

Because it isn't a root method.
FlashFire is an excellent application/pseudo recovery that allows one to back up/flash certain Roms and mods.

Definitely not wanting another locked ATT piece of crap. As for ATT...
I will own my G900A on OC4 TMS5 3.0 custom rom in 3 months, THEN WHAT??? They are choking us programmer types to death these days (no, I do not do phone programming, old dog here. I wish I knew how. Too old and lazy...LOL).
Yeah, my S5 from at&t has a locked bootloader and I'm rooted. I have to use OA1 bootloader though for it to work. Everything else is using OF3.
I think each time I get a phone that root will never happen and it always eventually happens. The S7 seems like it's selling like hotcakes, so I'm confident that one of the genius's here will figure it out.

Where did that person say "I require root"? I'm...pretty sure they were wondering about the oem switch in the settings, because it's a curious thing. Besides, what if they want to root their at&t or Verizon phone? Maybe it's a younger person whose parents got the phone for them. Maybe they couldn't just shell out eight hun for an international phone. Maybe they're just learning about rooting after buying their phone. Maybe they just want to root their at&t phone & so what? You know, the odds are there will be root early on for the s7 on all variants, and then they'll patch the exploit, so... Anyway, your comment just seems kinda douchey.

I think you're reading too much into one sentence on an internet based forum. Clearly, since you took time out of your day to try an counsel me with a paragraph of verbiage suggesting that I was somehow patronizing the original post. I was simply suggesting that carriers such as AT&T and Verizon are making it increasingly difficult on users to have full control over their phones, which, of course, ties into bootloader unlocking, etc. A poor attempt on your part to try and do the job of a forum moderator, obviously. Let's keep it on topic please

This is a thread regarding the oem switch and whether or not the BOOTLOADER is unlocked when activating it. Then you added your snotty two cents about "if you require root," which is way off topic, and made you sound like an a******. Then you allude to me being off topic? Nah, man, nah. If I misinterpreted what you were attempting to express, it's because your critical thinking is sub-par, and you should think clearly about what you're going to write before doing so. But that's really not the case and you know it. You jump to conclusions too. I'm not attempting to moderate, I'm just calling you out on your s***. A hard pill to swallow, a difficult reflection to face. Now you want to be nasty with me; That's cool.
I just got a bogo on at&t for two s7 edge phones. I don't "require root," but I sure hope it becomes available. Got two vr gears, and two 64gb micro sd's free when I did the deal at bestbuy. I think root will happen, but to get back to topic, I doubt that the bootloader will ever get unlocked. I just want you to know that I care, and if you need more counseling, I'm here for you. Peace.
~Xjimmy
The switch alone doesn't unlock the bootloader even on devices that can have the bootloader unlocked. It is part of native android and I'm betting Samsung just forgot to remove/hide it.
Also it's not just the att and Verizon versions. All the US models have locked bootloaders with no unlock available.
I wish you luck but to be honest all the devs that might have been able to do it refuse to work on Samsung devices anymore. Just look at some other Samsung devices with huge bounties set. No one has done it yet.
If you need an unlocked bootloader and or root then Samsung is not the best Idea. They want to lock their devices down permanently. Which no one can really blame them as they try to break into the business market and modders make up less then 1% of their sales and shrinking.

Hi, what phone would you suggest? I love my ATT S5, which is still on OC4 with a custom rom. I will own the darn thing in June (not letting ATT get their greedy grubby hands on it, I would rather step on it to death...LOL) and trying to figure out what next. It is a great phone and still pretty fast and it is almost 2 years old!!! Amazing!
I know what you are saying about Samsung. They pretty much killed the development on their phones. Renovate is working on a rom for the 935-F and even they say they can only work in smali. I would get a Nexus, but NOT without an sdcard. I do not understand why they do not have them in there. Even a 64gb internal is really not enough for system, data, music and backup (I have a 64gb sdcard).

Yeah, I been looking at it. I need to see the custom rom development before I buy one, if I buy it. Going to save a few months of no phone pymt. Maybe later in the year the price will go down some. Also not really a fan of unpullable batteries...and who knows what will be out next.
One of the few good things about ATT is that when you have paid off your phone on the Next Plan and are on a Mobile Share Plan, they grandfather the $25 line charge discount in even if you don't buy a new phone from them. So they say...LOL. Have simm will travel? Anyway I only give my friend $40 a month being the 4th line and I will probably pay him $25 when my phone is paid off.
Have you checked out the Renovate rom? In Beta 2 now. They are supposed to start modding soon.

Anyway I will hopefully get to play with "M" next month if it comes out and if @muniz_ri can do for 6.whatever as he did for 5.0 + 5.1 + 5.1.1 and keep the BL at OA1 to go back if need be. Maybe I can stomach Unrooted Stock for a bit (but I really need my Viper!). Will be interesting to see if the S5 will run better or worse...LOL

I would say if you want rom development then get a nexus. Pretty soon that will be people's only choice. And even then that maybe coming to an end with Google making fixes but not pushing the fixes to aosp.
As for the international version of the s7, development will be buggy as they always are with that chip set. Without proper documentation there will always be things that don't work like camera issues.
As for why no sdcard in the nexus. Well that is a two fold issue. One is people really are dumb. (average not users here... Ok well some) and have no idea between the 2 types. The second is people always wanting to move apps to the sdcard which is never a good idea. And then you have knock off sdcards that cause issues and people blame the device because they don't know any better.

Root finally out? Nope nevermind.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/help/s7-s7-edge-root-t3321556/page16 Look there and you'll see it looks like root has finally been achieved. Sounds like they installed the newest TWRP and then using that flashed supersu. It does trip Knox though. I'm about to head off to work so I can't test this now but it looks promising.

Looks like you may be charging that thing for a while, then. Seems that even the T-Mobile version is subject to the plague that is the locked bootloader for right now. Hopefully someone can figure something out or Samsung releases something along the lines of HTC's bootloader unlock for us. For once, the Snapdragon appears to be more crippled than the Exynos.

I understand everyone being upset about the latest development but some need to calm down a bit. Not saying it's anyone in this thread though some comments are a bit over the top. Maybe some people are new around here or others have the memory of a goldfish but this isn't' the first time this has happened to a device. There are a multitude of ways around this. Motorola who is known for locking bootloaders with almost a hatred for consumers, was defeated with the combined effort of many people on XDA. They managed to find the key to unlock the bootloader and it was smooth sailing from there.
Will we obtain the key? Quite possibly. we'll either do it the hard way and get lucky running a program on multiple computers and phones to decrypt it. The other option is that it'll be leaked by an internal source (probably the most likely). Samsung might even give us a dev program to unlock it similar to HTC. The fact is Samsung doesn't want a large customer base to be this unhappy. We are the most influential consumer base as well. Think of all the changes and additions to Android over the past few years. Changes that started here first and were adopted by manufacturers. They use us and in a way, need us to show them what people want. Let's not forget that XDA is the most influential Android site on the net. If Samsung gets snuffed here badly it'll spread very quickly.
TL;DR It'll happen one way or another guys. Chill out. May not be in the time frame we're use to these days (remember waiting weeks to months for root back in the day?) but it will happen. focus on pressuring those who can exact change into doing so. For the ones capable of it you should focus on ways around this.
I for one am not worried. I had a Motorola Defy that had a locked bootloader. By the time I had bought the phone though it had been out for a few months and people had found a way to put custom roms on it so I was happy.

New Software Update

Just got a software update. I wonder what has changed or improved.
Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
Not sure. But bootloader is still locked with this, and experts are recommending to hold off on install if you plan on trying to root the device (in case a root exploit is found for the original software version). Remember, once you flash a new software, you cannot go back.
Seems to fix static over bluetooth, at least for me. Persisting with cabled headphones, though.
I noticed that it re-enables the things you have disabled with Package Disabler Pro.

Although I do believe that Samsung should unlock the bootloader and let people make their own choice about their phone. They just need to make it very clear that if you modify your phone your warranty is voided and your on your own. Sad part is some people will go out there and start playing with stuff and not know what they are doing and then want to blame Samsung when the phone gets messed up.

I think they've made it abundantly clear that flashing unsigned firmware voids the warranty. And Samsung can then refurb the phone and resell it. The Knox flag effectively protects Samsung from any liability regarding this sort of thing. Making it impossible to "downgrade" to previous software versions, a practice Samsung started a few years ago, was a bad omen. The dawn of the Knox flag added to this downward spiral. Locking the bootloader is a level of control unprecedented for carriers like T Mobile and Sprint, and continues the evolution of Samsung's security deathgrip.
Popped up when I unlocked my phone this morning. It's installing now will play around with it .

I "chatted" with T Mobile support around 8:30 am today, they had no idea this update was live. Apparently their databases have not updated.
Probably a good idea to hold off on this for now. What if they find an exploit that lets us root but only for the previous version? This is becoming a lot like iPhone jailbreaking... that's why I switched to this S7 Edge lol. I should have read more about it first.

Samsung devices on T Mobile have always had unlocked bootloaders (as long as I can remember anyhow), this was a huge surprise for everybody.
It's also not the March security update as its still flagged as Feb 1

Just rebooted after installing the update. Got a pop-up saying:
"The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center"
I haven't modified anything. I haven't even disabled packages. There is obviously no root so I haven't done that either. Weird. Will try a factory restore.
Edit: This was happening after I attempted to check for updates after this mornings update installed. Checked for update again after a 2nd restart and message no longer comes up.

Yeah it does seem that way. It really sucks, rooting the phone was one of the big reasons I wanted to switch over. I hope someone is able to find an exploit that allows root. I had android a long time ago and ran Cyanogen mod, that thing was cool. It took the super slow stock LG G1 or whatever it was and made it really fast. I would pay for that on this phone, it has so much potential.
Dr. Fed said:
I think they've made it abundantly clear that flashing unsigned firmware voids the warranty. And Samsung can then refurb the phone and resell it. The Knox flag effectively protects Samsung from any liability regarding this sort of thing. Making it impossible to "downgrade" to previous software versions, a practice Samsung started a few years ago, was a bad omen. The dawn of the Knox flag added to this downward spiral. Locking the bootloader is a level of control unprecedented for carriers like T Mobile and Sprint, and continues the evolution of Samsung's security deathgrip.

The only issue I have with modding phones is that sometimes when buying used phones the seller doesn't tend to inform the buyer if something is wrong. I bought a phone a few years ago on At&t and realized later that it had Internet but could not make calls out. Apparently the last owner flashed something and messed it up. I ended up selling it for cheap, luckily it worked out for the buyer because the phone would not make calls on At&t but would on T-Mobile and he had T-Mobile.
There should be a bootloader unlocking tool that will let you forfeit all your claiming rights but also put you on a list by you imei number that can tell potential buyer your phone has been modified. While you may wont to modify it I wouldn't wont any of your problems. Worst of all is when you hear there is an update for your phone but you cant get it because your phone was modded with out your knowledge when purchasing.

I just did the update, TOOK FOREVER IT SEEMED....but I am very impatient. Afterwards, it seems that things are smoother and faster, but it could just be the placebo effect. I will be watching battery life today and see if it improves.

I actually don't think its a placebo effect. Could be wrong. On restart, it was much quicker to get to a usable state. The micro stutters I was having seem to be gone. Things are opening quicker as well.
A welcomed update, I have installed on my phone and will see if it improves my battery life which has not been too good.

Need help lobbying for unlocked bootloader

Hmm. What an interesting idea.
But we already have tons of those petitions, e-mails, telephone calls, personal letters, legals requests, etc.
So in other words... your idea has already been done... with no luck.

Roger that. I guess this can be closed then. Just outta curiosity, do you know if this is going to be the new norm? I'm on an international S7 Edge so it doesn't currently affect me, but I would like to have my wifi calling back. Have a brand new TMO S7 Edge just getting dusty.

More than likely, yes, it will be the new norm.
There is an incredibly small chance that Samsung will go back to sending Tmo phones with unlockable bootloaders, but I would definitely not hold my breath. This is assuming that John Legere and Tmo actually did ask Samsung for an unlock like they said they did, and that Samsung decides to go back to how they used to ship the phones. Both of these scenarios are pretty unlikely by themselves, and even less so together.

I'm sure they discussed it. It was likely shot down as soon as it was brought up though.
I'd bet that even if we were to ask today they'd say "We're still working on it. These things take time."
I'd bet that even two years from now they'll say the same thing too because they don't want the negative publicity. Any response starting with an "Unfortunately" won't ever be in our benefit which is all that they'll be responding with if we were to get any straight forward answer at all.
Samsung is grossly underestimating the willpower and determination of their customers. We were determined to get root and now we have it! Samsung should see that, be smart about it and decide to give us what we want. Meanwhile, if I let someone check out my (rooted) S7 Edge and let them notice how hot it is, how much the battery life sucks and how bad the lag is on most games (all due to the engineering kernel that we're forced to use) then I'd doubt very seriously that most people would want to get it. So my way of thinking is that they might as well let us flash unsigned kernels to at the very least let the phone run like normal. I've awed more people with my phone before rooting than after. I've actually shown it to my supervisor and she responded, "Why the Hell is it so hot?" I'm guessing she's not going to be upgrading now.

But then HTC could probably sue Samsung for using their idea. LOL!
I really doubt any of this will affect Samsungs decision to unlock. This is a great device stock and each who drops Samsung 2 will buy their devices. There is nothing out there that would persuade me to root even though TEKHD has a custom rom and our device has a method to root. Just my 2cents

Samsung won't be releasing an unlock unless it could positively effect their assets. Right now, their assets are Samsung Pay and Knox. Both of which require a secured bootloader to work. By releasing an unlocked bootloader or an method to unlock would do nothing positive for those assets. Truth is, there is nothing to gain for Samsung to release the bootloader for us so they won't be doing it. I'm certain of it.

Because Samsung has probably the best device they've ever made if not the best device currently on the market
Because Samsung S7/Edge devices are outselling the iPhone 6S/Plus
Because 99.99999% of people don't know what a bootloader unlock is, much less care about having it
Because Samsung Pay
Because a secure device enables government and corporate contracts
Because Samsung is making a ton of $$$ on these devices as they are
Because Samsung is totally OK with losing a small handful of people to HTC/Nexus devices when they can capture a much more lucrative market with a more secure device
There are likely many more reasons, but hopefully that answers why we don't have an unlocked bootloader and why we will never have an unlocked bootloader.
So with the bootloader locked, there is no way at all to install custom recovery or custom rom???

No custom recovery. We can flash with Flashfire though. Only problem is that if something doesn't work right then you'll have to restore with Odin since we can't restore with a recovery and can only access Flashfire after the phone has already booted.

Will Sprint LGG6 Ever Obtain Root or Unlocked Bootloader?

Magic 8-ball says: Ask again later...
I hate these questions. They make me feel more doubtful, lol. Heck, if we knew that everybody would be buying one and waiting in anticipation.

The million dollar question. I hope it happens but this is the first phone stock I've had that doesn't annoy me. I actually barely notice at all but I love to flash so maybe one day
My phone runs great no issues so it's not a big thing to have it rooted in that aspect, however. I like to keep NANDROID backups in case something happens, and the ability to backup applications the way I want is very important to me. Just using apps to backup everything is one thing, but if something occurs on a system level, you are generally screwed unless you have ROOT to be able to tinker and fix it yourself. I was able to fix countless phones on my own when the stores would want to wipe to factory reset or give me a refurbished. Screw that mess, give me freedom. Besides, it's illegal for them to deny you insurance claims based on ROOT. They legally have to prove that you damaged the phone by modifying the software. Battled and won twice after threats of a lawsuit. I have that part of the consumer rights saved in multiple places, just need to remember where so I can post it.
It all depends on whether or not the bootloader is locked, dm-verity, restrictions, etc. I hope it's not something like the Galaxy S7 with its Qualcomm Secure Boot.
The bootloader isn't even accessible from any user accessable means from what I've encountered, I can't seem to get in, I have "Enable OEM unlock" in settings, but it just seems that fastboot has been entirely stripped from this device... Very weird.

Why dont you look for a bootloader exploit or donate your phone to someone who can do it?

You can still anti bloat through android.. by disabling apps manually. But yeah I feel your pain.. I hate ads, I miss Xposed, I miss TWRP.. My note 5 i still keep around for that reason...
Truth is the LG G6 is a spectacular phone.. But the rooting community is getting smaller and smaller as android allows you to be more customizable and the average device life for people has gone from 2-3 years.. to every year now with leases and trade ins at carriers, and flagship phones coming out every 8-14 months.
WIth the G4 randomly dying, and the G5 having battery issues.. It took LG a while to get it right, and I love this phone more than the s8 and s8+ but LG jumped on the "apple/samsung" bandwagon by locking bootloaders... There are alot more people with Samsungs than LGs right now.. The reason behind all the companies going this route is because of Android Pay and proprietary security by phone manufacturers to push more sales through corporate and enterprise security..
At least LG is over time unlocking some variants ( albeit international) of the G6 its hopeful...
We used to have this luxury with HTC but they are still trying to stay afloat.
Those are just my observations... from working for an indirect dealer and rooting tons of phones for 9+ Years.
We just have to pray for an exploit- somewhere.. someone out there has turned it into an obsession... Lets just hope they emerge ....

Ditto on all that. For ads, I've used the all in one opt out which has eliminated lots of ads. Bloat is irritating, having to reset Google Voice after every update. Xposed was awesome. And I want all the Sprint badging and boot animation gone. Even temp root would make me happy.
Just everybody remember. Do not update. Usually root is achieved on lowest firmwares only in the last few history of lg series
Someone just messaged me this: Maybe some jtag process could work, or test point at qcom mode, dumping boot.img and rooting with magisk
