Dark colors not uniform from top to bottom of display - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I'm noticing an issue with my S8 AMOLED panel and curious if anyone else has this issue.
On darker colors, the top of my screen is noticeably lighter than the bottom. This creates a gradient type effect on apps with dark themes. Tapatalk's dark theme, for instance, is very noticeable and at first I thought maybe they updated the app with a gradient background between me switching from my HTC 10 to the S8. Then I noticed it in other apps and when changing the screen orientation, the gradient shifts along with the device.
The S8 is my first Samsung and is my first phone with AMOLED. Is this color disparity common, or should I try to have TMobile replace my device? Thanks!

Managed to capture it in pictures taken using my HTC 10.

certainly contact TMobile to get a replacement, I've seen no such issue with my device

I use dark or black walls and or themes and haven't noticed it either.

i am having exactly the same issue but only in home screen....dark wallpapers are noticeably lighter on top than bottom...any ideas? Almosta as a gradient below status bar...not on apps!!

I haven't noticed this on my S8+.
Is it not because the screen is so tall that you are often looking at it at an angle?

So I called T-Mobile and requested a replacement. They sent me to the nearest retail store and had it swapped out. The new display doesn't have the gradient darks issue. Yay... Unfortunately, this new device has pink edges where the last one did not. Can't win.
My HTC 10 had a pink tint to the screen when I bought it and it eventually went away, so I'll keep the new S8 for a bit to see if maybe the screen bond is still curing. I'll give it a week before I request another replacement.

The AMOLED lottery. Got the same issue with non-uniform black colors as well.
Journalists like to call this the best display on the market - because they get preselected perfect samples. We do not.

That is a defect with OLED panels. Slind hit the nail on the head! Reviewers get a hand-picked perfect version and I don't doubt that their phones do have the Best Display, but we get half-assed defective non-uniform panels that go from yellowish to pinkish looking causing a gradient and sometimes blotches.
This has been going on since the galaxy S6 for me. I will not pay $750 and settle for less. I return/exchange the phones that have these issues and sometimes you will go through 4-5 phones before you find an acceptable one.

I wish i didn't read this thread. Same problem here.

Curios thing is i only have this problem in homescreen with a black wallpaper...not in apps wich status bar is black...only noticeable in home screen...if i select a black image in gallery it looks uniform...but that same image applied as a wallpaper dont...strange i know!!!

Yes, and because of this I don't think it's a defective screen issue. I believe it's a software issue in the setting of the wallpapers for the home screen. Which means, unless a bunch of us raise hell about it, it's not going to be fixed.

same problem here, for me the issue its mostly an issue that creates an odd sensation during gearvr, when play a game withbtoo dark a scene you loose vision in one eye...

Ok, i'm in the same boat, i have an unlocked Exynos S8, same issue on top of the screen with black wallpapers, little gradient... I tested the stock launcher and it's there, then i open in the gallery the pure plain black wallpaper and zoomed in to vie full black and surprise, the gradient isn't there, ok, so IS NOT HARDWARE.... then i test nova launcher and yes, the gradient is there... ok,ok, i tested like 5 random launcher, some of them are perfect with the black solid wallpaper (no gradient issue on top) and some of them had it....
but why touchwiz?.... why the stock... is not hardware.... it's all i can say
---------- Post added at 07:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:02 PM ----------
Quick update: I you use the store's theme "material black" you can have a pure black top on touchwiz... so yes, god, it's a software issue.... using that theme gives me a pure black top man, again, why not the stock theme... greetings

Omnia 7 - strange vertical lines on display

Hello,
I have noticed when I look to my display in more detail I can see strange vertical lines through it. It is not very visible but I can see it better when there is white color for example in mail application, or if I setup blue color for lock screen. I wonder if it's just caused by AMOLED technology or my HW is not ok. Is it same on your devices?
Thanks

what colour are the vertical lines? samsungs OLED screens have pentile technology which kinda sucks in my opinion. basicaly it simplifys the pixel structure quite a lot so that it has the same number if pixels but rather than each one being split into a red, blue, green section they have 2 parts each alternating between red green and blue green. i think advantages are that this makes the screen brighter and colours stronger but it also reduces sharpness and seems to make the pixels more visible. i might be wrong for your case but I didnt realise this when i got the phone. still would choose it for the amazing blacks, just a shame they done have normal pixel structure.
hope that helps

Thanks. But I think it's not pentile technology. It looks like tiny straight scratches more visible on top part of the display especially visible on bright color,s for example when I use green for lock screen. I will return it to my seller and hopefully they will fix it or give me a new one.
I noticed it on my Focus, as did Engadget in their Nexus S review:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/
We did see some strange issues with the display -- while it does look handsome in most settings, we noticed some troubling inconsistencies in the panel against certain colors or tones. It was particularly pronounced on solid gray backgrounds (as you can see above). We're not sure the cause of the problem (or if it was simply an issue with the device we had), but it was somewhat troubling.

Can't decide which bothers me more though, the lines or the fact that the screen dynamically dims itself based the amount of white pixels that are displayed on screen.
I can't see those in my omnia, maybe it's only present in some of the panels?

It was quite visible in Game hub mostly on top part of the display. Or try to setup your lock screen to green.
I've noticed this on mine too. I'm wondering if it's just a bit of image retention from the live tiles on the home screen, much like you get on plasma screens. I've got a photo frame app which I'm using as a screen saver for a couple of mins each day to 'clean' the screen.
It may do nothing, but it's worth a try

cant say i can see any lines in the game hub but the green really seems to make the pixels more visible on the white 'games' writing at the top
My Guess would be that this too is due to the PenTile Matrix used by Samsungs Super AMOLED Screens. As the green occurs more often but only at half the size this might lead to this effect:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nexus_one_screen_microscope.jpg
Sometimes I'm tempted to dub the Display a Super Lame-OLED but only until I see the colors next to a non OLED Display.

That's interesting. My problem looked like those tiny green vertical lines on your picture, but mine had grey colour and were very visible on top part of the display, in the center I could barely notice them. The other thing is that I should see them very close to each other but in my case they were 2-3 milimeters far away from each other, which convinced me that my HW is broken. Also when I showed it to the seller he advised me to send it back for repair.

Display has yellowish tint to it. Help!!

So my excitement kinda came to an early end last night. I got my second replacement mt4g due to a bad screen. This one is perfect...except that when I was reading some text on a page with a white background, I noticed that from bottom to top, the white gradually goes from white to this yellowish tint. I will post a picture of it later on tonight.
My question is, do you have/had this problem and did you end up returning it or did it go away kind of like when this was happening to the iphone 4? I really hope this really doesn't become a full-blown issue like with the washed colors, because then I would have to request a 3rd replacement and make sure that it doesn't have dead pixels, dust under the screen, washed out colors, yellow tint, crooked ffc, creaky buttons, and gaps around the bezel. Thanks.
Here is an example of what i'm talking about except my display is white at the bottom and gradually goes to the color of the phone that is on the right, at the top.

Do you think that the problem is improper screen calibration and all I have to do is wait for a software update?
225 views and one reply?? Really guys?? Not trying to sound like I'm whining, but this is a serious problem and I think i'm not the only one. I just received my replacement, and it too has this yellowish tint towards the top of the screen. This will be my 4th time that I will be requesting a replacement, so in total so far, 4 defective phones.

I'm sorry, but it's really difficult to tell based on the picture you linked. Is there any way you can take a comparison photo with a good screen?
I can't see anything wrong from that photo. It will take something more than this to let others know if you have a problem.

The blacks never looked grayish, the colors were bright, crisp and vibrant, it was when looking at something with a white background. This issue has nothing to do with the washed screens that people are getting.

I figured it out based on a chat I had with a friend. I think that the backlight was improperly calibrated or something. Sorry that I can't take a better picture as I have already received my exchange which is much much better, the light is just more distributed evenly then the previous phone. Plus it doesn't creak, the ffc is dead centered, and light doesn't leak through between the bezel and the screen at the top of the phone. After 4 exchanges(5 phones total), I finally got a "perfect" device.
Here is a side-by-side shot sort of(I returned the defective device before I could think of take a pic of them together due to my excitement!)
You can easily tell that the screen of the phone on the right has way more light at the bottom of it and the top doesn't which results in a more obvious yellowish tint. The phone on the left (good one) doesn't have it as bad, the light is distributed evenly. Both were on auto brightness. The good display's(right) brightness is down a bit more but it doesn't matter since I tried to increase and decrease the brightness on the defective one(left) and it made no difference.

Possible Screen Issue. Need you guys help.

So I recently got a Galaxy Note and tried some wallpaper i used on my galaxy nexus and there is strange distortion in the image where the colors transitions. I'm interested to see if this is the Galaxy Note or just my Galaxy Note. Can you guys place the image on your devices and see if it shows the same distortion.
I attached the image to this post so you can put a clean image on your device.
Here is where the distortion is but of course you won't see it in the image unless you are looking at it on your note.

i see wht u mean ... i tried it...but i think it happens becuz the pixels turns off under the colours becuz it's black ,, u cnt see it on lcd i guess if u tried
another possible issue it's becuz every pixel has 2 sub pixels instead of two so..it cant move to another colurs
I considered that but the Galaxy Nexus has pentile display as well that is Super Amoled. I would expect to see the same thing on that device but it might be that the pixels are a bit smaller on the GN. I honestly don't know but it concerned me a bit.
I cannot see any difference between the image on my phone and on my laptop.
I have tried with Screen Adjuster at 75% and -40 contrast, and without.
Interesting.. Do you have a white note or a blk/blue version?
This is a common issue in the Q/A section. Look for the a thread about video playback issues.
In short, the Note does a very poor job at rendering black levels. At some point, it completely drops off and instead of rendering a low level black, you get a completely turned off pixel. This creates the "black pixelated" effect in the wallpaper that you see. You can see this same effect if you took the default ICS stock wallpaper. You'll see it in the bottom left side of the wallpaper when viewed from a note.
Supercurio is working on a fix. People are also hoping that ICS will provide some relief to this issue so sit tight.
It is not a hardware defect, rest assured.
This effect will also occur in videos with dark scenes. One temporary remedy for now is to use high-resolution wallpapers and high-resolution videos. If you can, try using a 2500x1600 wallpaper or something higher. This reduces the black clipping/pixelation a little but does not eliminate it. Using a brighter themed wallpaper would help as well.
If you're using a dark wallpaper thinking that it'll save you power, don't bother. It is not significant power savings due to the fact that you'll swipe through your home screen and your brightly colored icons would have activated the parts of the wallpaper that were dark anyhow.
Cheers.

This is the black crush issue which is discussed on the video issue, it also happens with images/games and basically anything on the screen.
Same issue for me

Its interesting... After i read the post about the pixels being turned off the issue disappeared but I did lower the brightness and it did come back. Its apparently not an absolute under every circumstance but its definitely an issue. I'm less worried about it now though.
I gotta wait till ICS to make my final decision on whether to keep the note or to go back to the nexus

Screen pressure under front camera?

On the top left corner of my screen on the nav bar, right below the camera/proximity sensor I see what appears to be just a slight bit of pressure on the screen causing it to be slightly brighter . It's barely visible, and I'm not talking about the light bleed issue from the secondary display, because this is on the other side. It's very faint, and I can't see it when the screen background is dark or if the screen is off. It can best be seen by tilting the phone forward.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Yes I have a black bar under my front camera, proximity sensor area. If I look up from bottom to top of screen it's lighter. I had mine warrantied out today from T-Mobile
I had that issue with my first V20 from AT&T. I went to AT&T and they changed it out at no cost. I get a new one and it has a new screen 'pressure' located on the bottom corners. Makes black look a little grey in the corners.
It's on mines also, but it's a dark spot instead of a brighter spot. Right above over the status bar, you can even see it in white pics too. Wanted to send it to LG so I can get a replacement but want to know if it's fixable first.

I have this too and I wonder if it is from the CPU/GPU heating up. If you look at the ifixit teardown, that is approximately where the heat outlets. I have it on mine. It was day 1 and I was flashing some roms.

Yeah it's mostly when I flash ROMs especially AOKP or LOS. I'm thinking it's a backlight problem, because when I go back to stock it doesn't show... And it could be the CPU/GPU also because during flashing ROMs that part specifically gets warm.
Maybe you are right. I didn't see it in stock but it's super prominent in LOS. I was flashing roms for like 4 hours though. Not sure what is the exact issue.

Alright so I reverted to stock and locked the bootloader and everything. That dark spot is just as present in the stock ROM. The T-Mobile store representative agreed it was an issue. Now I gotta ship it back and wait for the replacement. Just got it a day ago man. :crying:
JFYI...have it here too.
My replacement V20 has the exact same thing?!?! Dark spot in the middle of the status bar on white (or lighter) screens. What is weirder is that it is the exact same pattern and location as the first one. It is present in both stock and LOS. I suppose I'll just wait around a year and warranty it out then because I just want to start using the phone. I included an image for people that were curious how it looked.

I'm experiencing the same thing with my V20. I can see a dark spot under the proximity sensor. Did anyone get it fixed somehow through a replacement or repair through LG?
Have any of you used a simple free screen test app to help confirm the "fault" you seem to have?
Hi Guys. I Just recently bought an LG V20 and have a similar issue. It doesn't affect day to day use but was wondering if it is normal because of the 2nd screen?

I have that same issue ^ not as burnt though but same place and shape. No screen retention at all from what I can tell, just this!
Hasn't bothered me enough yet to do anything, can only really see it on white screens.
Same
It isn't pressure spots - it's IPS light bleed. With regards to the darker patch just underneath the second screen - this is because of light differences between the main panel lighting and the second screen lighting (and again, because it is IPS, the light bleeds over if the second screen is brighter than the main screen).

AMOLED contrast

I noticed something weird compared with LCD screens. Every time there is gradient dark/grey color (wallpapers, apps backgrounds, ...) the gradient is always "broken" and become just a big and ugly full black area. I checked on all my previous smartphones with LCD and I have never this issue.
See here my pictures, in the "Battery HD" app, all the top display is only a big black box, is it normal? Can someone install this app a tells if it's the same issue on AMOLED please?
Thanks

The whole point of AMOLED is that it turns off when displaying black. So yes, by its nature there will be a sharp transition from "dark grey with backlight" to "off".
Yes, AMOLED means black is true black. But what I'm saying is even dark grey become black very fast. On my pictures, you say it's normal but the same thing is perfectly gradient on other phones.
In the app Display Tester, when I test the contrast, the result is very bad!
On this test:
I can't see anything between 0 and 8 with the Pixel 3a, it's just black. But with every other phones (LCD) I can see grey squares up to 2!
Can you test your contrast guys please? With the app or with the test image extraced from the app.
I can't see 0-4 but i can see all the others.
You tried full brightness?
What? You can see 5,6,7,8 ??? Impossible for me, full brightness...

I am still on my op6 as my pixel has just shipped. But I can see up to level 6 (barely) on this screen.. just fyi.
yeah i can see from 5 up.
yup, check this lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
at minimum brightness (which I use a lot at night), I can barely make out the 40 square on my 3a. On my old pixel XL I can see the 10 square...
is there some way to calibrate things?
On your link display test (I will post image for everyone after my post) impossible for me to see anything between 1 > 8. I tried all, in the dark, max and min brightness
On all my previous smartphones (LCD) and laptop I just can't see between 1 > 3.
I really don't understand people who say "it's normal it's amoled so it's black blahblah..." but guys... the purpose of AMOLED is to make BLACK black, not grey black. Those images/tests are contrast test: see NOT BLACK elements (squares) on black background. So it's not about if blacks are black, it's about a lot of GREYS are black on this display where we can see the difference and squares on LCD, so it's not a good contrast. We have to stop to say everytime 'oh black is black so it's a perfect contrast", contrast ISN'T (only) that.
Image:
yup it's not normal in any sense. it's just poor (or lack of) calibration. on any decently calibrated display in a dark room you should be able to faintly see the squares in the top row.
Guys, are you serious? You really see the first line?
