Low light/Long exposure performance - OnePlus 3T Guides, News, & Discussion

Just thought I'd share some awesome photos I was able to get out of my OP3T last night! Good job OnePlus!
I'm running LOS with the OOS camera port.
EDIT:
This post is to show the capabilities of the OP3/T in low light scenarios. For those who are curious.

Wow, superb..

The first one was 100 iso, 4 second shutter speed, and Infinity zoom. The last three are the same except I used a 10 second shutter speed instead of 4.

just as I thought OP3T is so freakin awesome!

Wow. Great skills and results!

camera configuration on this phone could risult in insane quality:
I had nexus 5 and I made photos of much better quality than dslr, really. That's why I'm still using that phone. how?
https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera
this simple app let you shot an INSTANT burst of 20 RAW shots in BRACKETING, which merged in camera raw results in perfect photos even in extreme low light. So 20 raw shots + instant burst + bracketing.
I'd like to have the same function on Op5 (maybe more than 20shots per burst?), but (this is important) for both sensors at the same time.
Optical zoom is only 1,5x so I ensure that if we merge in photoshop a bracketing burst of both sensor we'll obtain the quality of professional expensive camera.
I can attach some examples of what Nexus5 reaches with this function if you want, but who's expert in camera raw hdr editing understands the insane result reachable
edit: i tried the app and it works! with our 16mp resolution, so it is fittable to any phone. the only problem remains that raw shots acquired with non op-camera apps are kind of blurred-violet

No way at all! You might get some good shots out of your Nexus 5, but "much better than a DSLR?" Definitely not if you're using the DSLR properly.

ROFL, I'm an enthusiast photographer and shoot with a Nikon D3 and I laughed my a$$ off reading that. The OP is delusional. There just is no way you'll out do a DSLR with a camera phone if you have any clue on what you're doing with the camera. With total control of a current smartphones camera you might get close to what a DSLR will get you on auto.... MAYBE, and forget from a phone from 3 or4 year old smartphone camera.

Another enthusiast here (D800) and I am willing to be more charitable. In good daylight a cell phone camera will produce images that are more or less on par with a mid-low end dslr, at least in terms of basic technical things such as noise, acuity. I do agree that in lousy light all bets are off, and this is what the OP implied.

In good light they will be close on the camera maybe at 100% on a phone screen. You put that baby on a PC monitor and start pixel peeping and really scrutinize, it won't be close

Longer shutter-speed on S8 possible?

Hello,
I just found out, that the longest shutter speed on the S8 is only 10 seconds.
Even on my old OPPO R7 Plus the max. shutter speed is 30 seconds (which is best fort low-light/night photography).
Is there a work-around or maybe a modified app, which enables longer shutter-speeds on the S8?
Thank you!

Get a tripod and layer 3+ shots
Unless you find someone who's able to recode the camera app, or add a new shooting mode you can get your phone steady, turn off image stabilization and take some shoots with a 10 second shutter speed. You can layer them on the PC and achieve a similar effect, plus you can try the RAW-Mode of your phone... (tell me if it's any good)!:good:

You can only achieve light painting/light trails effect through this way. If the exposure doesnt remain for more than 10 second you won't be able to get bright picture and hence less details. The point is to capture as much info and not the light trailing.
As far as i know, there is no way. Yes there's one way but i wouldn't consider rooting my phone for it. Extremely stupid of Samsung here. Even the cheaper brads such as oppo etc has longer shutter time. Also it's a shame that upto Galaxy note 10 it's not supported
In case u r trying to achieve this you can you intervalometer app and stack these images. Check the attached image. Captured on note 8

From a gig last night. The camera is decent. Works if you put effort in it. This is taken with gcam. Gcam uses only the 16Mpix sensor (at least I think so.)

One of the pictures I took last night from my first attempts at astrophotography using 5T. It's difficult to do and time consuming considering its a 30 second exposure.
I haven't edited it, this is on ISO 1600 and 20" exposure.

has anyone tried using a third party app like open camera, camera fv-5, or snap camera with 100% photo quality setting?
Open camera is free and should give a good indication if photo quality is improved by reducing the jpeg compression that seems to be causing the oil color blur with the op software.

Thanks.
Tried opencamera also. Images came out very grainy and terrible looking. That shot above is taken with Google Cam. Probably the version which was first optimized for 820/821/835. The one with no hdr settings in the menu at all.
Okay so, what's really good with this camera? I've been seeing so many mixed reports of the camera being really good, and then the whole "oil painting" quality.
I'm waiting for my 5T in the mail, and this'll be my first OP device ever. Camera isn't super important to me, but I'd like to have something that out-preforms my current Nexus 5X.

If you don't care for the second sensor, not much in my opinion.
Lowlight is probably not bad, if you think brighter = better.
All OP5 / 5T comparisons I've seen so far showed a brighter image, but also more processing artifacts.
In my opinion their second sensor is just there to keep the portrait mode and doesn't offer much more as the lowlight capabilities
are realized through software processing. Don't see any reason why this processing shouldn't also work on the OP5's main sensor,
other than them wanting to have a selling point for the 5T.
Some samples which show the issue:
https://imgur.com/4Xa06lA
http://i.pi.gy/R8p2E.jpg
Btw, this is what their portrait mode produces outdoors in daylight: https://i.imgur.com/5x1ikOs.jpg
This is what my OP3 produces indoors with HDR+ (I stopped using the stock camera months ago because of how bad the postprocessing is):
https://photos.google.com/share/AF1...?key=OEk1SkNwQXR3VVhTaWQ5Ulc0Ti1feXZ1WmNyN2VR
There is just no competition.
The fact that most will look at their photos on their phone and that many samples online are downsampled is probably the reason many don't see this issue.
As much as I would like to upgrade to the OP5T, I am keeping my OP3 because of the camera.

I understand what you're getting at. However, your two example images from the 5T don't really demonstrate the issue you're talking about to the severity you're talking about. OnePlus's post processing isn't good and it does process detail out of the second image, but the detail loss is quite miniscule. And that aside, it's quite a good picture. The first picture was compressed due to imgur, so it wasn't really indicative. Also, since you'd probably be more knowledgeable on this topic than me, I wonder: other than the dot pattern issue at full crop, what's wrong with the GCam on the 5T? On the 5, it seems to work well.

Which GCam version/settings are people using?

I know the Redmi Note 7 has a good camera for its price point, but I was curious what people were using who prefer the popular gcam ports (hopefully one with the latest features like night sight) and which settings they have been using

32s shutter speed is just... Insane! Should be able to take some decent night portraits; especially of stars and fireworks.
Time to buy a tripod!
Although I do wish it had an upper range of 1/2000, just like my Lumia.

Same for me. I really enjoy the Photos of my OP3 with Gcam 7.2 very much, everyone is astonished about the quality a 4 year old 450€ phone can achieve.
It's just too slow, takes 30 seconds after 2 shots to process
So far, I had no time to test the OP8T, but tomorrow I hope my wife and me can make comparison shots with OP3 and OP8T, both with GCam. The macros that you can achieve with of the OP3 and GCam are really amazing, you can see single hairs on bumblebees.
Why did I not choose a Pixel 5?
1. You can't buy it officially in Austria and they cancel illegally purchases from Austria in the German shop
2. Google support is the worst of the worst, while OnePlus has fantastic support, easy to reach.
3. You get so much more raw power in the OP8T than in the Pixel 5. While the Pixel 5 is good for anything it does today, it's CPU is 1/2 to 1/3 of the power of the 865, so in ~2 years it will already have problems with some software
That said, the pixel camera software is unbeaten and If there would not be Gcam mod, I had a Pixel.

Anybody managed to get a good enough picture with the macro lens? For me the macro camera is really poor. I mean, like 2005 used to have better camera than this, the photos are very unclear and grainy every single time, pretty useless. The main camera is good enough and the Ultrawide is ok, usable. But the other 2 are really a waste of space. imo.
