Wifi disconnects and reconnects constantly - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi,
just had the phone for an hour and almost right away after first setup the wifi radio disconnects/turns off and re-connects/turns on automatically every 20 seconds or so. No matter wich network I try.
Working fine with my S7 Edge laying here beside me, never had problems. I have three different networks around me I can try out.
Anyone had the same problem? I can find som info about this exact issue for the S7 Edge for some, but no solution from that works on the S8..
N

this is an old problem S7 had
you need to toogle in settings > connectivity > wifi > advance > smart network swithc OFF
i think this was - but dont remember well since it was a while ago - but basically you need to turn off the option of phone switching between phone and wifi data

Having the exact same problem with my Ubiquity wifi network (ie, not some janky cable company router) with my just-booted up S8. Smart switch was off by default, and after switching it 'on' and back 'off', no change.
This was the first thread I found on the topic, will update with any solutions.

Yup, Hotspot 2.0 is off for me. I've restarted the phone and the wifi access point, and my Note 5 and S7 are working fine lol. Super weird!

Well I'm in Sweden and have no operator dependence. Neither for mobile or my home network (fiber connection owned by me).
This sucks though... I want this resolved

Try downloading wifi analysis app and see what it's picking up. Maybe you could try changing your wifi channel if it looks low?

No this has nothing to do with the routers or access points. I am 3 meters from the AP, its at 100% signal rate etcetera..
This has to do with Samsung and the software.

As I wrote I've tried all that I'm afraid. All the things that was recommended for the trouble on the s7.

have u tried going to a free wifi spot (starbucks, mcdonalds) see if the issue persists - maybe is your router refusing connection

As I wrote I have three different wifi to test with but yes makes no difference. This is a well known but not solved problem with Samsung phones.. three different makes of manufacturers, different settings with a/b/g/n and all show the same problems.
I also installed the small new update today for the firmware. Still same problem.
I'm guessing I'm about to get a replacement phone. I'll try that on Monday.

I'm not seeing the same problems with public wifi as I am with my Ubiquity Unify AC AP Pro access points at home - definitely weird.
When it is connected, I'm getting my usual 100mbps speeds, but it continues to drop regularly (not the every 10secs it did when I first powered it on, but every minute or so).
One thing that was mentioned was changing channel bandwidth from '40' to '20'... I don't see anywhere to do that on the S8?

Doesn't that mean on your router?
By changing the broadcast bandwidth from 40 to 20 you will increase the signal produced (same power is covering less channels)

I had this happen on a UniFi UAP-AC-Pro network with my S8 as well. I turned off Nearby Device Scanning on the S8 under Settings-> Connections -> More Connection Settings and that seemed to fix it. Strangely, I did not have the issue on my home network which has a single UAP-AC-LR access point with an otherwise similar configuration. Not sure if this setting change was really a fix, or if I just temporarily got lucky.
If turning off Nearby Device Scanning doesn't work for anyone, it might be worth playing with other settings within your network such as Band Steering. Some of these require turning on advanced features within the UniFi controller. Also I would be curious to hear whether those who have issues are on networks with a single access point, or larger installs with multiple access points.

Very recently got the Samsung S8 and I'm having some wierd WiFi issues. When connecting to the network everything is fine i get almost maximum download/upload speeds(500/500) from my UniFi AP-AC-PRO. But after being connected for awhile 30-60mins the speed drops to around 30mbit downstream and upload around 200mbit. If i disconnect from the Wi-Fi and instantly reconnect i get full speed again. I've tried switching settings in the ap, went from everything on auto settings to static channel/transmit power and been trying vht40/80 but makes no difference. If i have smart network switching on i get disconnected and put on LTE instead. All my other devices have blazing WiFi speeds as usual. I'm gonna try turning of nearby device scanning and see if that helps.
I started a thread in the ubiquiti UniFi forum as well but i cant link that here(not enough posts on this xda account)

I'm having the exact same problem as you. Wifi connects at full speed at first, then after a while speed drops. Has gone down to 1Mbps numerous times. Disconnecting then reconnecting fixes it for a while then it starts all over again. I'm connected to a TP-Link AC1900 running dd-wrt. May try going back to stock firmware on the router to see if that helps.

So has anyone come up with a permanent solution to this? I'm in the same boat with my ac-ap-pro and s8+. Disconnects every 20 seconds or so.

Every time i connect nexus 4 to my home wi-fi. Every other device gets terrible connection speed... Before nexus 4 my Nexus 7 had steady speeds up to 20mbps. I have three desktop computers, an iPad, an iPod, a Roku unit, and two smartphones sharing the same wifi signal. My speeds don't seem to vary any regardless of the number of devices sharing it at any given time. I would have to call my service provider if I found myself in your situation.

Yep, same.
To the op, I'd say either reboot the router (which you probably have done) and / or see if there's a firmware update for the router.
If no cure, call your internet provider.
Ok.. Forgot to mentioned that n4 also loses wifi connection from time to time.

I have seen this before. It happens in mixed networks (old B laptop used to crash the WiFi AP when G clients were also connected).
1) Check for a firmware update to your router. This is most likely where your issue is. The router speed should drop and increase as needed, but buggy firmware may only keep in last slowest speed until a reboot.
2) Mixed encryption (WPA & WPA2) is a nightmare Force "WPA2 only with AES only" -or- "WPA only with TKIP only". Some clients may try to use WPA with AES and this was what was crashing my AP at the time.
3) If you still have issues, try using "G&N" only, or even force G only. Some older G clients don't hear N traffic, so they just transmit on top of it.
4) Last resort, look for a used router that can run DD-WRT firmware. Personally, I will never go back to OEM router firmware.
Hope this helps...

Hi every one. I just got my N4 last week and i experiense the exact same thing!!!!
this is realy bad because every time i use the wireless network every body in the house starts complaining because my N4 shuts down all connections here.
It works alright with the main router wich is a thomson. but it fails with the other two routers (that are Belkin - N) that are only access points!
I realy want this fixed because not having internet at home is quite bad!

I would hope most people would have tried that long before coming to the forum to complain about the issue.
The issue is WiFI closing & not auto signing back in whether mobile data is on or not.
It's simple option is in settings wifi
Yes the switch is simple but has nothing to do with the "closing WiFi" issue some are experiencing.
BUT I DO NOT KNOW Enabling this option AS MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE FOLLOWING HAVE SOLVED MY GUIDE

unchecking this doesnt do nothing....im sitting across from my router and its telling me my signal is weak.
Browsing on vzw 4g lte is faster than my 50mb comcast wifi connection? lol if i browse with wifi its a slow lag.
Same for me. Moreover, with the new firmware, if it loose the connection while the option is unticked, it says that it will be re-ticked automatically...
This WiFi bug is really annoying.
My phone has stopped dropping the connection & is behaving well. But I have no idea what solved it. I factory reset router & phone. But it made little difference but after a day it's behaving perfectly & it's currently on my wifi & has not dropped for 12 hrs & no more constant pop up messages.
I have no idea what cured it. But one thing I did last night was went to play store & updated every app on the phone.... maybe there was a conflict in one of those apps.. that's all I can think. I left "adblock" off this time as that routes wifi data but I'd removed that several days ago.

I'm curious what Access Point you are using and how old it is? Are there firmware updates for it that you have not applied?
I've read somewhere that cancel all existing WiFi connections and make them as new (with the new firmware), could be of help. I'll give it a try.

I've tried all the solutions on here, and nothing works. Very poor samsung for such an expensive device. If a £30 roku box can have perfect wifi why can't a £600 device
I must admit that wifi performance is quite poor for the moment.
I get 6 or 7 Mb/s out of a 25 Mb connection. My S4 , Note 1, and Ipad 3 al do around 20Mb/s while testing simultaneously

You can probably find what it does on the Internet (Google), but it doesn't truly help. My guess is that these performance issues are router dependant. I'm waiting to get my hands on the new Asus RT-AC68U router to upgrade my yesteryear 300 mb/s router. In fact I just ordered it, it will arrive tomorrow. Will post here to let people know if it helped...

Well I was right, my shaky Wifi connection using my Sitecom WL-351 router is a thing of the past. Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections through my brand new Asus RT68AC router work excellently!!
What this very probably means is that the Note 3 uses a Wifi chipset that doesn't work all that well with certain other (older model?) router chipsets. The Asus I bought to test this is quite expensive, but I am sure a regular router can work well given it is compatible. What needs to be done is verify (through a Poll or by researching known chipset incompatibility problems) what chipsets and/or routers / brands work well. Unless you expect Samsung to fix this in software, which often is impossible - unless Samsung can force an update of the chipset firmware.

"Internet connection too slow" notification

Hey kids.
I came from the S3 the beginning of November. One of the "new" annoyances I've come across is a notification that the wifi connection Internet speed is too slow. Which is bull. The only way to reconnect after that is to reboot. Sometimes enabling airplane mode does it as well. So my question is twofold. Has anyone else come across this? Has anyone figured out how to turn this stupid setting off?
Thanks in advance.
♢NoteIII♢
I haven't encountered any of these problems. My Wi-Fi signal it's weak at times, but when I have a good connection internet speed is fast
If I helped hit thanks!!
im not saying this will fix your problem, but i was getting these messages as well. I switched my wifi power saving off via service menu. I also changed my router band from 2.4ghz to 5ghz 40 bandwidth and i havnt seen the message in about 2 weeks.

Thanks. Actually did the power save to off this morning. Happened again this afternoon. As far as switch to 5ghz, I've found that my wifi signal's reach gets cut by about 20-30 feet on that band. Which means I lose reception in part of my basement. I can move my router more centrally in the house, but overall speed suffers (goes from a solid 8-10mbps connection to about 1.5 mbps) cuz the wiring to that receptical is sketchy.
I can get that stupid message in the same room as the router.

yeah 5ghz band will cut your signal strength in half probably. Maybe buy a dual band wireless access point? Its wierd that your speed goes down on 5ghz. Mine practically doubled on my note 3. My house connection is 100mbps / 5mps. On 2.4ghz i can only get up to 30 mbps, when i enabled 5ghz wifi, i shot up to ~110mbps down.

that's ridiculous... buy another router or access point? Its the phone, not the internet, when you get the notification when you're right next to the router. The Note 3 is the only device on my house giving me Wi-Fi issues. Sorry I don't mean to sound like an arse, but it seems silly to buy a phone and have to replace your router, when everything else works just fine with the WiFi signal.
Just to clear up, speed goes down when I connect to the other phone plug. So my router (brand new, furnished by internet provider) is on one side of my house. And this happened before moving in mid Nov as well. Before was cable Internet, now dsl. It's the best thing I can get @ current location.
I'm not sure if it will actually solve anything, but I received the latest update ota. Tomorrow gonna download latest firmware and flash via odin avter wiping everything with safestrap.

Kancerstick pretty much had it right. Rather than switching the band from direct 2.4 to 5.0 though, go into your router settings and look for a setting that says "channel".
What channel are you running on? There are 1-11 channels, try different ones or the idea is to find the one that matches the channel of the phone/client device

The one solution that did work for me was to go into the WIFI Settings -> Advanced option under the menu key -> Uncheck the "Auto network switch" option. I haven't had any further issues with that message so far.
tried everything...
I think I have tried everything on this issue. I got my note 3 a few days ago and it will not keep a stable network connection. tried:
1. uncheck the auto switch
2. turn off mobile networks
3. turn off wifi when sleeping
4 changed my router to static ip and not DCHP
5. forget and reconnect to network
6. reset router
I don't thing I can change my router settings anymore or I will have issues with other equipment
I am sitting right next to my router and everything else works fine but my note 3 will not keep a connection. I keep running speed test and half the time it works and half the time I get a no connection error.
Any other thoughts? Should I try another unit?

Wifi speed going down to 1mbps

Hi,
I have realized that my wifi connection drops down from more than 20 to only 1 Mbps with my lg g2. It happens with 2 routers and seems that if I reconnect the phone then I go back to more than 20 (and short later in goes down again). Any idea what can be?
No suggestions on this one? I tried the location services changes with no success. I would say it is some app causing issues, but no idea which one could be...

got exactly the same problem
switching wifi off an on solves the problem for 2 minutes or so. then it drops to 1mbps again. tried different routers.
I figured out that it only concerns internet traffic. LAN traffic remains at full speed.
WHO can help please? :cyclops:
hmmm. wonder if this is the same problem a lot nexus 5 owners have including me.. there's quite a big thread on it in n5 QA section
there's no fix but workaround solutions include running in 2g mode or turning off data when on WiFi and even making a script to do so automatically when entering WiFi areas.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/slow-wifi-n5-t2514501
thank you for that interesting link.
unfortunately the solution turning mobile data off didn't worked for me.
I also tried static IP instead of DHCP - no success.
one strange thing, as already mentioned: LAN traffic to my computer works perfectly with max speed. (copying files e.g.)
so, wifi works in principle. It's about internet traffic only.
but which kind of software/hardware is able to distinguish between internet- and local traffic?

Wi-Fi taking EXTREMELY long time to connect

It seems my note use quite long time (apparently 1 min) to connect to a Wi-Fi. I try several networks with the same result. My Z2 and s4 connects straight away. Anybody else have this problem?
Edit: After several tests I can say that the average connection time (from I turn wi-fi on and until connection is established) is 25 seconds!!!! My Z2 is 5 sec. and my Z2 tablet is 7 sec. What are your times?
Tested on 3 different wi-fi networks today and still all taking long time for connecting
Have not heard of this problem. Try resetting the phone and nothing is solved, then might be hardware defect. Use warranty or find a way to get a replacement would be my best guess.
I reset the phone - and I try to time how long time for connecting to the wi-fi (only have 3 wi-fi networks in range) It take 25-30 sek to connect - is this normal? Every time I turn on wi-fi the box with networks available come in.... Everybody get this?
This box I get everything I turn on wi-fi. Is this normal?

How long time does it take for your note to get connection?
It's almost instant at home, but takes a few seconds when I'm at uni (eduroam). My S4 used to be unable to connect to eduroam during the first few attempts, so the Note 4 is a definite improvement.

I think it depends on the hotspot you're connecting to. It's instant at home because it's a personal network, while in a university it's a more complicated structure with thousands of users connected at the same time. So I don't think there's anything wrong with your phone, it's more the networks you're connecting to. You other phones may connect quicker due to compatibility between modem and router.

It's probably a matter of compatibility between the Note 4 modem and your router. So long as it connects and the speeds are the expected, you have nothing to worry about.

Anybody else have long connection time???
I really would like some help here.... Could you please try to time the connection and post your result here.
I had something similar a few times, but a just turning off and on the router solved it.

Thanks - but I already tried to turn off and on the router.
After a bit more testing I found that it is actually the "start up" time for the wi-fi that's taking time - and not the connection time. If I change wi-fi network while the WiFi is on I nearly get instantly connection on all networks. So the question is if your start up time for WiFi also is 20 seconds???
I had this problem couple days ago. Restarted my phone and problem was gone.
Tried to change to a static IP Address - but nothing changes ?
