New OTA Update Apparently Removing the ability to Remap the Bixby Button - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

https://www.xda-developers.com/sams...to-remap-the-bixby-button-on-the-galaxy-s8s8/
Sad!

This is bull****.
Makes sense from their perspective but just poor customer experience. Its bad enough you lock the bootloader.

Very disappointed especially since Bixby isn't ready for prime time. While I do understand why they did this, they should of at least waited until Bixby went live or got their **** together from the get go and got Bixby ready for release.

If Bixby worked out of the box I would get this but given we (UK) are being told late 2017, this is poor.

this is BS lol. Damn Samsung...

I was really hoping to remap that. Based on the leaked rom I tried on my s7 Bixby is just a half baked google voice knock off which is itself a half baked hot mess in it's current revision.

Haha you still have the other buttons that are standard. This was an Extra button. Long press home still launches google home. Double press home launches Camera. Haha for me it's no big deal.

http://www.droid-life.com/2017/04/17/samsung-doesnt-want-remapping-bixby-button-seems/

I have a Roku2 with premapped buttons on the remote that came with it. One of the buttons, Rdio which is no longer in business cannot be remapped and the company has made NO attempt to give users any way to remap it. So, out of the FOUR pre-mapped buttons, only THREE work.
It's not surprising. It's annoying but I'm sure it will have a workaround as soon as it's released.

I pressed the stupid button by accident several times at the Best Buy Demo table while just holding the phone. I wish it could just be disabled altogether.

Speaking of which, I'm guessing you looked for an option to turn it off in Settings somewhere and didn't find it? I'm not saying there is an option just curious if you looked for one.

I just cancelled my preorder. I remember why I gave up on Samsung. Why do they give a $hit what I do with ONE button on my $850 phone?

Maybe someone will figure out a way to remap it. Honestly, having the LGV20, I like the button on the back, for me, I have been much less likely to press it accidentally.

Considering doing likewise.
I don't blindly accept OTA "updates" anyways. Anyone know if the new released stock on Thursday April 20th will already have this update installed or will it be the first thing that pops up when setting up the Phone?

SOS! Yep, I cancelled my tmob order last week. Will be watching international varients for Development, unlocked, etc.

I thought there was a way to shut Bixby off in the settings. Whether that effects the home swipe or the physical button or both, I don't know. If I can't stand Bixby, then I'll pm -hide the stupid Bixby app and see what happens when I push the button. LOL

I preordered the s8+ when I saw a post saying you can remapped the button, now I read this crap I'm going to cancel my preorder, WTF Samsung, forcing crap bloat on consumers shame on you

Power Button CRACK? Check your phone.

Was made ware of this issue today in posts on other EVO 4G forums and was wondering if any XDA users noticed the problem. Searched to see if this was already posted here, but didn't come up with any threads.

Mines cracked going to the screen and not the battery.
How did this happen?!
lol @clockcycle, you're making the rounds aren't you?
after seeing your thread at sprintusers I stopped by a Sprint store near my house and showed them. They said they would definitely replace it... if they had any in stock...

Nope. I treat my phones probably better than just about anything. I've never dropped it or hit it on anything. That's evident by the complete absence of any scuffs or scratches anywhere else on the phone.
Also I didn't go in all pissed off or bothered, I just told him I found a defect and asked him his opinion about it
Got the same frikken issue. I had just made the decision to keep the phone today too. I can get a replacement but i am worried whether they'll fix the hole for rooting on the new unit.
Never dropped it. I do believe it could be from holding the power button combo when tryin to boot into recovery early in this EVO's life.
I noticed this awhile ago, i don't notice it unless i'm running my fingernail along it
DAMN IT! I just checked mine and there is a crack. I've NEVER dropped my phone either.
Weak sauce!
Crack free, going on 1 month
Yup, i have one also, but it doesnt bother me at all TBH
Nothing here, so far
I don't have one either, and I did drop my phone once. It was in a hard case, and it fell on carpet.
i don't have one.i think my invisible shield is helping hold it all together.
Sent from my PC36100 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk one.
Yeah I have it on mine. My original store said they'd replace it but the one where I'm at now called it a cosmetic defect and they wouldn't do anything. I haven't even done anything to damage it.

Likewise, its very difficult to see but it does bring out my ocd just a little. I think I'll stop at the Sprint repair center tomorrow. If they want to replace it with a new one I'll probably let them
biggest problem i see with this is that if the other side cracks the we may well lose a power button.
DANG IT! Mine is, cracked up toward screen/speaker. That kind of sucks, but it is kind of invisible, too.
I'll call Sprint tomorrow and see if they'll believe that it happened on its own.
What's up with Sprint chat lately, anyway? It is always off line.
No crack, and dropped it on pavement a couple of weeks ago, no case.
Mine is cracked. Didn't even notice it though until I read this thread.

hmm i dont notice it, but they are better than the N1 touch buttons
i think its because I don't put enough pressure on it as seeing it is the smallest one
It is the curved screen, it makes it curve upwards and that's what I think makes it hard to get used to, after that it is pretty damn good.

I have trouble with it too.

I had a problem with mine as well, exchanged it and no problem anymore. The button just didn't work that well.

Also having trouble with the back button.
I think I'll go exchange it.
I don't think its worth taking back because you may get a device with something else wrong
A lot of people having issues, my device is solid, I am telling you it is just that curve that really takes some getting used to, I got used to it.
Sent from my Nexus S
Actually when I took it back to Best Buy the employee checked it too... you could press the other 3 buttons with no problem, but the back button just didn't work. About 2/3 of the presses would not register. I thought it was the screen curve also, but 2 others agreed at the store. My replacement has no such issue.
ooh, mines is nowhere like that.

So you're suggesting someone settle for a defective unit instead? No... keep going back until you get a perfect unit. $529 isn't paltry. I'd just open it up and play with it right then and there in the store and make sure it's up to snuff before leaving.

No insurance on the phone? I was going to say get a replacement screen on ebay but I just checked the prices and my god its not worth it.
Would probably be worth keeping it. Parts prices will fall in the next few months and could replace the screen pretty cheaply if you hold on to it.
Why did you not ask this question in the other thread you started?

Fair enough. I did not notice it was locked. Good luck!
save it for a rainy day. spare battery or whatever isnt damaged. i dont see the need to start a thread to help make a decision about something that does not help anyone else on XDA.
If anything we now know, not to leave our expensive device on a car and drive away. Thank you for the insight.

anyway..
just wait for the parts price down,

I get that, but I posted late at night and got up the next morning to a lynch mob, its not like I abandoned the thread. I claimed it as lost, It fell off on a very busy road and I wasnt to keen on trying to stop traffic to get it. On the way home it had worked its way closer to the side of the road and traffic was a lot lighter so I decided to venture out (mainly just to see if my SD made it). I had already made the claim though as lost, since I didnt plan on trying to retrieve the phone.

Well I Had My HTC Fun >:(

Got my first one launch day it got so hot that you could hardly hold it through a Otterbox commuter case and the lag oh my god it was horrible just a dud phone. Well got #2 yesterday the volume rocker on it sticks and you cannot turn it down with it, and by it sticking you try to turn it off and just resets. When it is sticking even the slider refuses to work just keep returning to the top. I would like to love the phone it is a nice piece of hardware but these issues are just way to much for a flagship phone imho. I still may try one more but getting pretty fed up with them to be honest. May prettier and fancier but my Nexus 4 or Note 2 have never let me down yet. See what Monday brings when I return this one..... Sorry I had to vent so frustrated

I understand the frustration, no flagship phone should have QC problem but unfortunately they exist. They say 3rd time is the charm. Sorry to see you leave if you decide to go. Good luck.
Just ask for the latest batch of phones when you go in.. If you're lucky enough to return to a retail outlet, you can check the device before they move it to your account. I went through literally 5 phones on my last go around. I was determined to find a decently built device.

Bent @ the volume button, how to get replacement?

Another case of bent at the volume rocker area. Always been in a case & Tempered Glass Protector, never sat on (keep in shirt/jacket pocket; couldn't put it in my back pocket if I wanted to, as I am in a wheelchair). Bought from Google shortly after release date. Additional issue is that because of the bend, the "volume down" button is "flakey"/sometimes unresponsive.
In my opinion (I know others have argued otherwise), this is a warranty issue. So, what is the best way to "present" this to Google to make the issue of getting a warranty replacement easier?
Should I only tell them about the volume rocker issue so it doesn't "deteriorate" into an issue of "cosmetic" damage? (The bend is minor).
Assuming they replace under warranty for the volume rocker issue, will they "cross-ship")? (I'm disabled, and rely on my phone a lot, so I don't want to be without a phone.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I contacted googled regarding this issue recently. I'm on my replacement device right now actually. I just told them the details of my situation. I even took detailed pictures because my phone looks brand new with a crease by the volume key. They didn't even ask me for the pictures and they issued me an RMA. The RMA device looked brand new so no worries there. I'm super happy with the device because the RMA GPS locks on super fast, the screen has no pink hue like my original device did and no crease!
Just call them, lol. I've never had problems dealing with Google.

Mine just bent by the volume buttons too - kinda frustrating since I've had it in a case for so long.
1. How did you contact them? (Phone, chat, etc)
2. How long did it take to get the replacement/did you have to pay for shipping?
3. Did you have to send back the old device?
Thanks!

1. By chat on the device webpage
2. It took 2 days to ship. It was free by Google through FedEx.
3. They place a hold on the device amount until you return your old device. You had 14 days. Afterwards they keep your money if you haven't sent it back.

My first 6P did this and they RMA'd it. Tell them it's not cosmetic, it's hindering your ability to toggle volume, they'll replace it.
This is likely a really really dumb question but heck. I am in the same boat with being bent by volume (mine is more near power button). But I am currently rooted and running the pixel rom for the 6P. Do I need to return everything to stock before calling them and before sending back if the issue RMA? Let me know. Thanks.
Edit: Followup question. In the event I DO need to return everything to stock, what is the easiest way to do so these days (been a while since i had to return a device to stock).

You should return to stock if you are going to RMA device. Easiest way is to download latest image for device from Google, unzip and run flash-all.bat command in fastboot like Google suggests. Following the XDA instructions instead and flashing everything separately is unnecessary for a clean install.
Man I thought I was the only one with this issue. Today was it for me, the bezel snapped. I haven't dropped it or sat on it or anything. The bezel seems to be bending at the same spot as everyone else by the volume button.
