FIX Android for TV Philips 6550 - Android TV General

I bought a Philips 50PFH6550 / 88 TV and many other users. Philips has some of its consumers in the know that there is a broken 3D feature, but they clearly said I would not fix it or would the XDA forum be interested in alternative software for this TV? On this Polish forum are problems only with software for this model of nearly 450 pages of problems without solution please HELP.
Personally I can test the software on my TV

xBounds

I was searching around for an alternative to Airplay without a wireless TV with my 10.1, and I stumbled upon this.
http://droidcon.nl/?p=3616
It's called xBounds. Anyone heard of this? I see that the video was posted the 25th and I'm surprised at the low views.
thats great
Exactly what i was looking for as Dlna is just crap for compatibility and so slow and clumsy to use. This xbounds looks awesome.

I saw the video about xBounds also.
Is really cool. I sent an e-mail to the team and they answered:
"
...
Sorry for the slow reply. xBounds is not available for end-users yet, as it is not an app that can easily be installed on the phone.
We are talking to numerous cell phone makers and are confident that xBounds will become available by Q3 this year.
We will let you know as soon the technology is available!
By the way, xBounds supports all the use cases you described and it makes gaming real phone on a large TV using you phone as a controller

The use cases what he is talking about is a description what I wrote about play HD games like Shadowgun and play high quality videos in .MKV format.
This device is very usefull if your handset don't have any tv-out hardware, and if you already have some you can start to think wireless.
People from Amsterdan can find to buy at droidcon (droidcon.nl).
It seems to work with any android with wifi, and also bluethoot and usb (seriously I don't know how).
The Xperia Play users are running in circles while shaking money to buy it xP.

Sony xav-601bt - Android based headunit with MirrorLink

For those of you who don't know about these new head units. It is the first headunit that is running an Android based operating system that is compatible with MirrorLink.
I can't post a link but if you google "mobile electronics magizine xav-601bt" you can find a lot of info on it.
I am curious what people are going to do with these once it is rooted, just think of the possibilities!
What are the chances we can get MirrorLink to work on all android based devices? So far it looks to only be planned for new phones but I am sure that we could change that.
Nobody else thinks this is amazing? You now can install an android based computer/audio/video in your car that you can mirror your phone's interface on!! Literally your car can now do everything your phone does, something people have wanted to do years.
I'm doing some research on the XAV-601BT right now. Saw you posted some info on another car audio site and I would like to know what you think of the unit. Such as: what apps would currently integrate an xperia pro freshly updated to android 4.** and are there any known issues with particular devices or configurations? Any mod sites messing around with getting rid of the bugs yet, safety nannies or performance wise? I can't find much besides chatter yet.
You mentioned that you had access to a unit and if it is installed could you give some details of what it is pushing and how it is performing?
Thanks allot. I am holding out for another unit that has been delayed again but this might make me pull the trigger. And yes, the prospect of running all my phone apps via my head unit makes me happy, let alone being able to root and customize.

I think you don't have the right phone for it.. only Nokia and the new Samsung Galaxy S3 support Mirror Link.
I've read somewhere that Mirror Link is hardware based, but maybe it's the same technology as MHL.
Thanks for the reply. I read that the 2012 Xperias would be MirrorLink capable too. I came across conflicting information on it being implementable for smartphones that had output capabilities of uUSB and HDMI like my Xperia pro. If a phone can support RealVNP I think it should work but I'm just learning about this technology. I've got some research to do on this before I pull the trigger because I want/need qwerty with my hand size and I don't see anything similar to the pro in the pipeline that would come factory capable with MirrorLink.
Anybody know for sure what it would take to run MirrorLink on a phone like the 2011 Xperia pro?

He is right about the S3 and nokia phones being the first supported. Windows phones and other phones are expected in the future but there is little information available. I originally heard that mirrorlink was a hardware solution but now I believe it is software. There is a good chance that it could be ported but it is going to be hard to tell until the S3 launches and some people on here start playing with it. I also hope they make an area for the XAV-601BT and XAV-701HD on this site so people can start focusing on rooting the unit as it is Android bassed.
I have used the unit and even without the mirrorlink it is an amazing unit. It literally does everything I could want in a double din head unit.
I currently have the xav-601bt i picked up from my audio shop yesterday. I also have a htc sense and the unit will only display unsuported device. Speaking with the sony west coast rep today, I was informed that there will be rollouts for the mirror link. It seems that it will be an app you can download from the play store.
The rollouts are expected to be every 60 days, but as for what phones are capable of running the mirror link protocol remains a mystery.
I offered my phone to be tested for there software but he will have to check with his higher ups about that. I am hoping that it will soon be available for download and one of the developers that crack it to work with other phones, like the netflix and hulu apps.
I am still waiting on information from the east coast rep on this as well. If I get anymore information I'll be sure to post it here.
Could you post some experiences with this unit? Do you think it's fast enough? How about the touchscreen; how well does it react to your finger and what about the sun.
There is a russian video on youtube giving a demo of this device.. not much to understand (at least for me) but at least you can see the features a little bit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGMxaMnfTFo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB9V641jTZQ
As you can see in the video, it's not as smooth as I hoped for.. sometimes you have to touch something two or three times before it works.

I have this unit as well and have had it since late May. It is actually pretty responsive(for a touchscreen head unit) and boots up fast. I am coming from a x930BT which was horrible in both of these areas. The having to press more than once is more related to how accurate you need to be to hit what the unit considers the button. It is small area that accepts the input for that button, hopefully they address this in a FW update.
As for the Sun question - pretty bad, but my car has a bad location for the radio that doesn't help the problem any. The sun beats directly on the screen and it is completely washed out.
Thanks tvrvic for the reply
Hmm the sun problem is not a good thing, a lot of units have problems with that and I hoped that a big company as Sony wouldn't have this problem.
I've had this unit for a few days so far and love it. I'm order the steering wheel control adapter today. It has a matte finish on the screen and that helps the glare, I can see the screen just fine.

Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.

Hi Guys just asking for a bit of an update - im in the uk so the bigger 701hd isnt out yet, i was looking at the Alpine ICS x-8 which also supports mirror link - there is a demo out on youtube which shows it working with the Galaxy S2! Do you guys think this would work with the S3?

This head unit does not actually run Android, so there's nothing to root. It uses MirrorLink to mirror your phone's display on the head unit. You'll have to wait a few months for Clarion's double din Android head unit to release to have Android running natively on your head unit. There are some cheap no-name head units out there right now running Android, but they're poor quality and I don't think any of them are even running Gingerbread.
thanks for that info.
so the sony won't be hackable. given that, is mirrorlink's app approval mechanism hackable on the android end? does anyone know mirrorlink tech beyond:
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP™) is used for controlled access to applications. Virtual Network Computing (VNC™) is used to replicate the phone's display on the navigation screen and communicate user inputs back to the phone. Besides Bluetooth™, audio can also be streamed using the Real-Time Protocol (RTP).
MirrorLink™ also provides a mechanism that ensures only approved applications are accessible while driving.

I just installed this unit in my car - the Open source license page on the unit shows a lot of .apk files and also reference AOSP, and Linux 2.6.x licenses - so it is Linux
The mirror link support looks like it comes from tmlibs.so - which they published on their support site (Trying to find the links - I downloaded what they published for opensource -
the libraries they put on their site were: (Repeating tar.bz2 was their names)
EDIT: the url for the sony site is : http://www.sony.net/Products/Linux/Audio/XAV-701BT.html
GPL_SGX_KM_20111130.tar.bz2.tar.bz2.tar.bz2
alsa-lib.tar.gz
dnsmasq.tar.gz
iproute2.tar.gz
iptables.tar.gz
webkit.tar.gz
kernel.tar.gz
and the most interesting
ML_Necessitas_Build.tar.bz2.tar.bz2.tar.bz2
TmLibs.tar.bz2.tar.bz2.tar.bz2
The TmLibs looks like it has a mirrorlink server and client embeded, using the QT libraries in the ML_Necessitas, and there is an ortpLib directory in there as well.
Would it be possible they are running some android apks within the system as the USB music app seems very androidish (menus & icons) while the ipod app not so much?
http://www3.jvckenwood.com/english/car/mirrorlink/compatibility/kw-nsx1.html
Support for the Samsung GALAXY S III is planned. Car Mode compatibility will differ by country or region.
Support for Europe was going to be available on July 20 2012.
But, Support for Europe will be delayed to August 31 2012, because of software development has been delayed.
And timing for US/Canada is TBA. Support for Asia/Middle East is TBA.

So MirrorLink with the JVC will work at the end of August, so I guess that will also mean Sony will support it by that date.

Buying guide / comparison matrix / which stick to buy?

This isn't the first "What stick to buy" thread, but I'm hoping that someone can either point me to a reference - some kind of buying guide - or a comaprison matrix between some of the most popular models sold buy Geeksbuying, Amazon, the other main retailers.
Which sticks have good software support? I.E. up to date at 4.2.2 or newer, rootable, etc.
Which sticks have good HW acceleration for MX Player, XMBC, etc.? Seems like all these sticks use the Rockchip RK3188, are there differences in this regard?
Are there better chipsets available in Android sticks besides the RK3188?
Would all sticks work with a cheap USB-ethernet dongle? That's what I'm planning to use
Anything else I should keep in mind in researching?
I've seen a few people vouch for the Ugoos UM2:
http://www.amazon.com/Ugoos-RK3188-...UTF8&qid=1387785373&sr=8-1&keywords=Ugoos+UM2
This one seems like the cheapest, anyone familiar with it?
http://www.amazon.com/Quad-Core-pro...e=UTF8&qid=1387785522&sr=8-11&keywords=rk3188
I think it would be good to work towards having a sticky post at the top of this forum for buyers like myself - would be happy to help contribute towards it once I become more familiar with the space.

I have Ugoos UM2 everything works out of the box fine!, but you won't find a lot support on XDA though..
For rooting you can go to my thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2495391
Also I'm not messing much with this stick, bc lack of time, I just using Netflix, HBO GO and Showtime anytime and everything run fine.....

IWO Watch 5 - where to buy?

So seen the IWO Watch 5 online on the usual sites (aliexpress etc), however, wondering who the manufacturer is and whether I can purchase direct?
Seems to be a lot of resellers online and issues with software etc - so would be great to hear if there's a trusted source with fair price.
This may be a very noob question so apologies - I really like the apple watch styling but I'm on Android (and thats not changing..)
Any help appreciated!

Is it wise to get Shield Pro 2019 for use in INDIA ? Will It Work Fine in India ?

Hi,
I am from India, and really want to get a NVIDIA SHIELD device for myself for general Android TV ( preferably the new pro 2019 ) purpose as well as to recollect some memories of the years gone by installing some emulators and running some classic games apart from trying my luck with running Android Games etc.
My queries here are multiple :
1. Is it going to give any issues due to purchase in US/Can. by not showing me Local INDIAN content on apps like , Netflix, Prime Video, Hot-star etc. ( I do have subscriptions for them in India and running through Chrome-cast 3 already)
I had just spoken to the NVIDIA rep. who told me it would play American content. However, a Prime rep. told me it would play Indian content.
I believe this all depends on the first login and the servers of the country being used to run the content from .
I have also read some other posts some people using the device in India which was brought in US and working fine. But no one confirmed that they are playing the Indian content or not.
Please confirm
2. Are the Android updates, region specific for the device, and I will need to run a VPN with US server and back and forth to reinstall the apps and stuff again and again ?
3. Should I go for NVIDIA game controller itself along with the device, as some reviewers mentioned that it provides full compatibility ( mic and talking to android
feature etc) with the device, unlike the compatible controllers which I may be able to get my hands on in INDIA? Are there any controllers which do exactly the same or more than the official controller ?
4. Are there any prohibited components inside which are barred to travel with like the batteries etc. from US/ Canada or to India ?
P.S. I am not an expert, so go easy on me !
THANKS !

I just bought the NVIDIA SHIELD TV PRO 2019 model from Amazon.com website and got it shipped to India. No issues with the shipment at all.
There are a few things you need to do to get your Free access to GEFORCE NOW games working on your device.
Get to the customer support chat section on the NVIDIA website and share your original bill, NVIDIA login ID and they will unlock your BETA access for your device in India.
1. There are no other problems with content or anything as all the popular apps use your local login, so NETFLIX, PRIME, HOTSTAR and ZEE5 all Indian content works properly.
2. You do not need any VPN for any updates. It is all officially supported in India.
3. You can use any bluetooth controller - I use my XBOX ONE S controller. You can also use PS4 controller with it. These are official NVIDIA recommended controllers and have no issues or problems.

Xbox One X or Shield TV Pro?
My primary intentions to get an Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) was to experience Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos as no other streaming box or device supports most of the apps that has Dolby Atmos content. But later on I came to know that Xbox One X also supports Dolby Atmos on Netflix and other apps. So I am now confused whether to get an Xbox One X in India or import Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) through Amazon.com or Tanotis or NewEgg or B&Photo.com?
Could you help me with why should I choose Nvidia over Xbox One X and what would be the Customs Duties if I am getting it shipped through a friend or relative on FedEx or Aramex?

Machi! I just saw one NVIDIA Shield TV | 4K in Amazon.in costing Rs.25k. Is it worth buying? As of now I use only Amazon Firetv Stick for my streaming consumption which I feel is not meeting my requirments due to the low storage and no external USB input. Hey Balaji! I was using a FireTV Stick 4k and as advertised by Amazon, no Dolby Atmos content was playing on it. So after analysing from almost an year, I bought the Apple TV 4k last month and it supports Dolby Atmos on almost every app that has Dolby Atmos content, like Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, Tidal. The UI is definitely awesome. But if you want to play content that you locally have, Apple TV won't help you, you gotta play using your laptop or Desktop.
