Does anyone else find the 32GB ROM restricting? - LG G6 Questions and Answers

I installed most of my apps and I have about 19GB free. However, I'm sure as time goes on other things will eat up that space, especially cache.
I know you can move some apps to SD, but preferably I like to keep everything on system ROM for speed. I was trying to avoid getting into the low memory dilemma with my next my phone (ran into that with my S5). I'm just not feeling Samsung's crystal ball/balloon screen vibes and I just wanted to get away from Samsung period. I'm very happy with the phone so far, but just wish they would've added the 64GB ROM or gave us the option to choose... Hopefully as Android matures, it won't become an issue for me.

I do. I would have preferred 64GB.

The 32gb was to keep the price of the phone down but you're right it would been nice to have a choice.Funny thing is I said wouldn't buy a phone without 64gb after have the s7 edge and the v20.But I really like this phone

I bought this to replace the iPhone I use as my desk/work phone. I would not buy it for my primary phone because of the 32 GB limit. My S7 Edge is always close to full even with pics going to the SD card. 64 GB should be table stakes to enter the "flagship" phone line in 2017.

The good news for you and others there are always other phone to buy.

I've got 16gb free on my 32gb phone (not a g6).
Not an issue for me, i hate lots of apps anyway.
That's not to say i was a little disappointed, but realistically i probably won't ever need more than 32gb, just would have been nice to have.

I can't even imagine filling up 32 GB with apps. All my music is on the SD card, photos go to Google photos and some apps that aren't speed dependent are on the SD card. I've got 18gb free and 4gb of the used space is my exchange email account.

It's not the apps to be concerned with as much as the OS will naturally gain size as updates are released/put out and naturally apps tend to increase as well (though that seems to have plateaued considerably). My last flagship phone was on the low end before and it felt like I got burnt for their oversight because I was really hurting for space before it was even paid off. I don't feel like I use a lot of apps. I don't even game on my phone. I trim/delete things regularly just to keep stuff organized.

Photos and music go to large SD so that's not the issue. I also have 1TB of cloud space. I don't game on my phone or anything. It's more about the fact a flagship phone that costs $650 is using the lower end of memory when idealistically they should be gunning for a 64GB ROM at this point to make space for larger ROMs, future changes to apps to future proof, etc. If that makes sense...

Repartitioning the storage, is it possible?

Hi,
We are able to unlock the bootloader ...
We got root ...
My question, is it possible to repartition the storage?
For example: Right now, there is only 1GB space for internal storage.
Is it possible to create 2GB?
And if it is possible, will it be a problem if Google have another OS update?
I meant, does Android OS update will check the "original" storage "layout"?
Thanks
excellent question.
I'd like to know as well, as i already have 1.5 GB of apps & games installed on my SGS that i plan to restore to the Nexus S when it arrives
meaning i'm already over the limit, and i've not even started yet
The answer is probably no. The same question was raised on the MT4G/G2 forums regarding their internal storage and it was determined that the eMMC/storage/whatever it's called chip can only be flashed one time. After that, it is physically impossible to change how it's partitioned in any way.
Now, granted, this is a Samsung device and, thus, they may use different chips. I find it unlikely, though, that it will be any different.
there might be a chance if Nexus S is indeed another breed of the Galaxy S family.
if it's fixed size and not changeable, then it's a good news for us, we will not see the corruption problems we found on many SGS when people repeatedly formatted their Internal SD to try different things
but on the other hand, it will kinda suck, as that will really limit the amount of Apps we can install in the device.
which will put a very heavy enphasis on using App2SD even more

You know, a gigabyte for apps goes a very long way. I had 130 apps on my i9000, lots of big ones like CoPilot and some games. I never even got over the 500mb mark on using up my app storage.
Never say never, of course, but I can't imagine worrying about app space on my phone. I'm sure I'll have a new one with much better specs by next summer, which, if apps start growing in size, will have more memory.
How do you have 1.5GB of apps? I have over 150 installed, and they're only like 300MB. Granted, I don't have a ton of games, but I still think it would be hard to get that many apps.

No micro-sd slot, why bother (for most)?

Unless planning on only using as an ereader and web device, the less than seven gigs of total usable storage between apps and data/media storage kind of makes the device pointless.
Why bother? Especially people that dwell in these forums.
I dont know, I'm more of a "glass is half full" person. Considering the price point and Amazon's excellent return policy, I dont see the harm in getting it into your hands and deciding then.
I for one do not use a huge amount of storage space. I don't keep music or movies on my phone. But the SD card is still useful for backing up my apps and data. I'm mostly concerned about how the lack of an SD card is going to impact your ability to hack stuff.
As long as I can hack the thing to run stock Android, I don't care about the lack of an SD card.
I think it's best to think of the built-in storage as cache. Amazon is trying to everything on its cloud. Books, videos, music... all stored on their cloud. When you need it, it'll cache it locally.
Same goes for backup. No need to backup to a SD card because it'll automatically be backed up to their cloud.
Err..
I think there is a certain missed point here that the author felt was going to be picked up. (Correct me if I am wrong.)
First, you can only keep AMAZON purchases in the cloud.
Second, while the processor is impressive.. they ripped out a lot of "nice" things which would have been cool to have.. I mean if it didn't have dual core 1ghz processor.. it would just be another "value tablet" or hell it would be frowned upon more than that due to the lack of bells and whistles.
So, the problem we have.. Is if you plan on doing anything besides ereading you are out of luck.. (and lets be real here.. if this was only being looked at as an ereader, it wouldn't have a forum here.)
Since you can't load whatever you want to the cloud, your stuck with 8 gigs which might be "ok" if it was *ONLY* an ereader.. However, honestly.. by the time you root it.. install the latest version of Cyanogen and possibly load a few songs on there.. most of your space is done.
Aside from that, the fact that it has no optional SD card slots may complicate the rooting/unrooting process. I would buy a Nook Color for 50$ more, because I can run CM7 from an SD card and not void my warranty since I could dual boot it. Especially if the kindle fire ends up unable to go back to stock.

Except with new nook colors on the way, the original isn't going to cost more than the fire anymore. I can imagine new condition original NCs going for $150 or less over the holidays.
The fire is a sweet tab at a nice price and I've been eagerly awaiting details all summer, but for some folks the slot is going to be important. I boot my TP2 android build from the SD card, and I like the low risk nature of it. Not sure if with a NC I would go nand or sd, but I like having the option.
Honestly for 150$ i'd probably grab the Nook Color..
unless the lenovo A1 was priced the same and had equal dev support.
I'm definitely holding off on kindle to see what else comes out... I am wondering if others are going to try to beat kindle to the punch.. or if they are going to think it is worth it..
I mean it is hard to compete if amazon takes a loss on hardware in hopes of making it up in software.

Dwelling.......... Here.
sent from my Infuse at Tranquility Base.
Ive got a Viewsonic gTablet which has around 16GB of internal space
Ive run Cyanogen and it takes up maybe a half a gig of room, that would leave around 7GB of storage
most of the apps I use are installed on and stored on the internal parition which is around 2GB, so that leaves around 1.5GB of usable space of which my apps take up about 500MB
out of the 14GB I have on the second parition of the 16GB onboard SD card I have 9.3GB free, and its storing all my ROMs...
I use less than 5GB for storage, so 8GB seems like plenty to me for now
I wont be keeping terabytes of video and music on this tablet so it doesnt matter to me personally
even with my gtablet I use less than 8GB, I stream most everything I watch on it as well
wouldnt be any different for the Kindle Fire...
I would prefer some kind of external storage option, but thats ok, its not required
A SD slot would be nice but not that big of a deal. I already have my on
pre-order. Most Rooting and Roms can be done with out a removable SD
card, the Nexus S 4g doesn't have a removable SD. I have rooted and gone
back and forth from stock to custom works just fine.

Exactly.... Why would you want the ROM on the SD card? I guess its to keep stock on your phone? But I thought we were the ones that didn't care about stock and were pushing the envelope... Well I came in at Droid 1... We didnt have SD card option back then. You either voided your warranty or you did what Verizon told you too. So I ask you this... When you your own Admin on your own phone... can't you write your own Warranty?

Er.
I will push the envelope. I have CM7 on my captivate.. The issue is I can odin to stock.
There isn't always an easy way to go back to stock. And if I'm going to get a kindle fire I am going to use it as a full on tablet.
I already have over 8 gigs in play on my phone a lone :/
I have no problem flashing, rooting or anything else. If I completely break my device and it is my fault, I'm not going to make someone else pay for my mistakes.
On the other hand, I always want a way to go back, in case of faulty hardware which does happen time to time.
So even though it isn't dual core..if your going to flash anyway.. it makes the nook color a bit more appealing.. especially since it will probably get a price drop soon :/
Hey, to each his own. you know? We don't have to agree I hope the Nook works out for you brother. Personally, I am going with the fire I don't have a need to return faulty hardware and if I do I will figure it out when I do.

Where did you get this information from? I have been searching for an answer as to whether non Amazon content can be stored and I don't see any indication that it can't be. Currently you can store non Amazon content in their cloud. I hope that holds true for the fire.
A micro SD card slot would have been nice.
But for $199 I'm not going to complain. It has superior hardware compared to some of the tablets priced in that range.
Dropbox will give you another 2gb cloud storage for free and you can get tons more cheaply if you need it.
Since I stream everything, I don't get what the fuss is about no SD card.
Same as the people fussing over the lack of cameras, mic, bluetooth and 3g. I have a phone to take care of those things plus I'll just use my phone's 4g wifi hotspot to get online if I need to.
The KF will be just perfect for instant on email checking, light web browsing and some book reading. For $199 it's great value.
Would a micro usb flash drive do the same thing?
Amazon has their own storage service that they want to sell you a subscription to. Also, having no SD card makes a little more difficult to hack. No doubt Amazon watched the NC get hacked and not used to buy B&N products and want to ensure they get additional revenue for the subsidizing the cost of the Fire.

Err.. I think this is subject to debate. I may be sitting around christmas going "Man wish I'd have pre-ordered earlier!" However, the Lenovo A1 is also coming out, there are probably going to be even more tablets now and they are going to be even more competitive.
Really.. the Amazon Tab is lacking. I mean I hate to invoke the name, because it seems to grant instant flame wars.. However, We crucify another brand which is very popular among the general population for these kinds of tactics.
I mean I really feel like all people are reading is "IPS screen, Dual core, 199$" which is a very compelling device.. however, it is a pretty hard sale.

dropbox won't give you anything last I checked. It requires you to have however much space you want to use on the actual device.
To me 3g is a ripoff anyway I will admit. Camera's aren't something I require on every single device I buy.. and honestly.. blue tooth is cool but not a prerequisite.
I really just think expandable storage (especially on an 8GB device) would be highly beneficial. I mean If I am wrong and you can throw whatever you want on the cloud I may reconsider.
The other issue I have.. although not a deal breaker.. is it looks like no physical buttons.. I at least want a back, home and menu.. Admittedly I have that problem with nook too but, it's w/e.

Not the person ripping in loss less, not the one ripping blue rays, but someone that rips 128 mp3s and just wants to bring them around? That is the group manufacturers need to cater to. I thought Google will add microSD slot finally on Nexus 6

Google updated the security policy of external storage since KK.
The resolution of screen is 2K now.
Not only the quality of taking pictures and videos got better but also the size of them got bigger.
But Google just let microSD go away again.
I don't know why really.
It seems Google 'hates' or feels 'disgusting' about microSD

Google will never Include a MicroSD card slot in their Nexus line ever again, they're trying to push for full internet connectivity - grabbing everything off the cloud, which would make expandable storage useless in their eyes. That's all good for countries like the US and UK who can get unlimited mobile data plans for dirt cheap, but those of us in other countries with less ideal data plans are left having to decide between a nexus with limited data storage and a inferior phone with an SD card slot. It's just how it is sadly.
I don't think it's all about making us use the cloud. There could bentwood more possibilities I believe;
1) there are many different types of cards out there with different read and write speeds. Having a big storage with low speeds could lead to lag and general slowness..
2) Having a "removable" storage gives you an option to "remove" it, say, for media exchange. But a storage contains two types of data; user objects like musics, pictures and secondly apps which has some files inside of the actual storage also. So removing this storage may fail some apps to run. Companies prevent that by not letting people to store their apps inside of SD cards thus damaging the point of having an "extra" memory.
So I believe having an big internal storage is always betterb for these reasons..

Cannot speak for the UK...but the USA is a land of laughably capped data plans. most ISPs be they landline or cellular cap your data usage laughably low. The "cloud" will die a quick death, between data caps from fat-and-happy ISPs and internet non-neutrality.
I can think of solutions for everything except pushing the cloud.
Filesystems are a dime a dozen. Just require a non-patented one. Tell the user what's going on prior to formatting it and that they can put it in a windows machine and format it to use it elsewhere. Most people don't swap them about that often. Using a security aware filesystem would solve the problem with apps accessing other apps data as well. Other than root, but rooting the device makes the users responsible for the outcome of giving apps root permission.
Speeds, meh.. Do a test and warn the user that the card is slow. Even crappy slow cards are more than fast enough for all except the higher bitrate HD videos. And few people have constant access to networks faster than even the slower SD cards.
Removing the storage doesn't happen that often. And would happen less if they didn't use a windows compatible filesystem. Apps2Sd is a ridiculous feature when even small phones come with 16GB. It made sense on the G1. Not so much now. When formatting the card, warn the user that apps using that storage might have issues if you remove the card. I don't know many normal users that remove the card, other than to upgrade to a bigger one.
Bigger internal storage is always desirable. However, I think it's ridiculous to remove the card option for users that want it. 64GB is about the level where I can get away without the card, so I will probably end up with an N6. But I find it irritating that Google removes the option. Particularly since I can't think of a reason that isn't self serving for them to do it.
But it is what it is. That's just how they do it right now. If that's a deal breaker for you, you will have to find a different device. I wish they would put the hardware there at least. Even if it required a custom kernel to enable it. But it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
I wish people stop *****ing about the MicroSD slot already.

Yeah, those people with slow and/or limited data connections who have a need for a lot of storage on their phone are sooooo ridiculous and unreasonable. Google removing MicroSD all together in a future android update is completely the right choice. Consumers should have limited choices in everything they do as should phone manufactures...... Long live blindly following everything Google does and never considering anything but a Nexus cause everything Google does is so right and amazing....
I hope you know that's sarcasm....
I don't know why many people don't/fail to understand a simple basic thing about Google, Google makes money when people are online.
Google's fundamental business strategy is - do anything and everything possible to make people go online and spend as much as time as possible on the internet (Free Android, gmail, chrome, drive, Cheap Google Fiber, Google express, failed Google glass, upcoming Self driving cars etc..), so that Google could serve you more online ads, make money on your searches, clicks and would also get more data about your online activity which would enable more data mining.
with SD card in the phone people potentially would not go online as much compared to a phone with no SD card/less built in memory, that's why no SD card in the Nexus and also why Google is trying to kill the SD card support in lollipop.
The lack of a microSD slot makes it hard to decide between the Nexus 6 and Note 4. I don't know why Samsung is able to do it but Google not.

Because it has nothing to do with ability. It's a choice, plain and simple. Why they make that choice is debatable, but anything we think is speculation. I generally go with "follow the money". Google gains if people are using the cloud more. But that's just opinion.
It's not a technology issue, every one of those I've seen trotted out is easy to work around.
Between the note 4 and Nexus 6... The biggest difference is touchwiz really. People will say that AOSP roms will be made. And they are right. However, note 3 still lacks a fully functional AOSP that is as stable as stock. Even if you don't care about the missing hardware support like NFC. The stability just isn't there. It's gotten much better recently, but I'm stuck on touchwiz because of it. So if you buy a note4, be sure you don't mind that. There's nothing wrong with that choice, it's a great device and looks like it works well.
The iPhone doesn't have an SD card and you don't see those users complaining. Why not just get the 64GB version and have more than enough space for photos and stuff? For the average user (which Google is targeting) they won't need more than 32GB of space, let alone 64GB.
I too wish Google would leave in an SD slot as an option. That said, I suspect that 64GB is more than enough storage for 90% or more of users, so I see why they leave it off the Nexus line. I think 64 will be more than I'll need in the next 2 years so I'm not really concerned. I may load up a 64 GB OTG solution with movies for when I'm traveling.

But at the time same if Google was really that concerned with making people use the cloud why would they offer 64 GB? Why not stick with the Nexus 4 mottle of 8/16GB? That makes more sense in the pushing people to the cloud argument.
I love the cloud, but like most people I don't have unlimited data or perfect signal everywhere I go. Options are key. That said I will still get a Nexus because I love everything else about it (minus the non removable battery) and I've had them all so far. And USB on the go is not very convenient (I've used it for a couple years) for what most of us want to use them for. For a plane ride sure, but not practical for daily use.
A better question is.. why don't we have minimum 128 gigs of internal storage? Hell even 256? How expensive is it for companies to include this much storage? Apple does, so why can't Google?

That said I will still get a Nexus because I love everything else about it (minus the non removable battery) and I've had them all so far. And USB on the go is not very convenient (I've used it for a couple years) for what most of us want to use them for. For a plane ride sure, but not practical for daily use.

With ART, the cache run partition for apps is going up quite a bit in size. Like double. People who needed Apps2SD on 16GB phones might still have problems with 32GB phones under ART.

That's also true. It complicates things with art. But more importantly as repeated here, Google is promoting cloud storage.

This is one of the truths. The other is that Google finds cloud storage the more viable option as well.
But in all honesty, if you seriously need more than 50GB of storage for your phone, you seriously have a problem with transferring files off of your device and to a computer/server. Even with my Nexus 4 I never exceeded the 16GB/12GB the device had available for storage.
I move my pictures and video to my external HDD once a month, move the ones I share often to my G+ Photo drive so I can always access them when needed.
I hardly keep music on my phone aside from when I make them into ringtones/notifications. I suggest any diehard music fan to simply get a PMP if you want to listen to music while on the go. PMP's have an independent battery and last FAR longer than your phone will, plus it will not drain your phone's battery and PMP's have proper quality sound compared to phones where it just works fine but does not offer true quality sound. Plus a PMP will allow more storage options as well for those with the insane music collections like I do.
Seriously between these two things, the only thing that has ever been close of a threat to taking up my phone storage is my ROM backups, which I never keep more than 2 at a time on my device since they eat up storage so often. Again they can be put on an external drive whether it be your computer or personal server.

Sure glad i got a note 4 before samsung screws up the note line...

I've seen a few threads talking about it but i have to rant...in light of recent rumors about the note 5 s design i just cant contain it anymore...
I don't understand how or why Samsung could lose the SD card slot from the note line. I know their new ufs storage is fast but its absolutely no replacement for swappable sd storage. There's also otg support for flash drives but that's hardly as convenient.
I've seen the out lash from current note owners and unless Samsung is trying to capture a completely different customer base (which i suppose they maybe trying for apple users) i feel they've made or making a big mistake. By what I've seen they could easily lose half of the note line fans. They have to read the forums they have to know peoples opinions, how or why ????;!!!!! Would they do this. The note series has a very strong following in my opinion and it seems the phone has always been a productivity machine aimed at a different group of users mainly power users or professionals it seems to me this is completely counter productive on Samsung's
part.
All i can say is i love my note 4 and was really looking forward to the device the note 5 could be i have a feeling its going to be very disappointing.
Glad i got one before the line was ruined by corporate blindness... Sorry i had to rant i know how others feel generally but sound off let Samsung know we
DISAPPROVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well they could add the SD card slot like HTC did with the HTC One Max. It doesn't have a removable battery but it does have a removable back and you have access to the SD card slot.
"Screws up the Note line"? Get over it. There will be a 128gb option for all your storage needs and if you reeeeeeeealy need to transfer files quickly (or whatever you're doing) simply use OTG. Sd cards suck and are unreliable. Good riddance. And good riddance to the removable back as well.

Many different brands, all class 10. Have had random failures that needed reformats.
I've never had an sd card fail on me in a decade of using them, do you guys buy the 10$ 64gb cards or something?
-Sent from my 128gb iPad that's full and annoying me
If all of your cards crap out on you and get corrupted, it's either user error or else you're buying crappy cards. I've only had 2 cards fail on me since the early 2000s, both of them sandisk class 10s which are known for failure. Switched to a Samsung card and I've had no problems.
Sealed battery & no card slot is a dealbreaker for me., if I wanted a damn iPhone I would have bought one. Removing features is a downgrade, not an improvement. Yes I'm sure they will have a 128gb note 5, for the low cost of only $1000 or so! No thanks. I'll be keeping my Note 4 until an actual upgrade comes out.
I think we (me included) keep thinking the users here (xda) are the majority in the Android world. We are, by far, the minority. What we want is not even close to being considered when Sammy develops a phone. They have extremely educated individuals heading their research and development. They know what people want and they know what people need. What they are putting out is exactly what the majority wants and needs. Removable battery? Not needed. SD card? Not needed. Just my 2 cents

Well then sounds like the Note 5 isn't for you. Stick with the Note 4 while the rest of us enjoy it. So if they add 10 features to the Note 5 but only remove 2 (removable battery, sd card) the phone is still a failure? Is that how you always do math or? And you calling a Note an iPhone is absolutely ridiculous. There is almost no comparison between a Note and an iPhone. The stylus and multi window puts the Note into another category.
Please give me one real world example of why a removable battery and SD card is necessary. I need to see this logic first hand.

between internal storage, internal app storage and all of the media files and work files I have on my Note 4 I would easily eat up 128 GB internal storage. I right now I have 32 GB internal and 128 GB exSD. I have 7gb free internally and about 20 GB free on the exSD.
It's not like the hardware for an exSD reader is expensive or anything, I do get why they wouldn't include one. Not to mention I have 3 Android devices and do not want to have to duplicate my exam files onto all three of them. It's much easier just to swap out the exam card.
What is even more perplexing is that in Android M the exam card gains back all of the original functionality and even gets new features, like storage merge, and hot swap.
It's funny to me that Samsung is doing away with the exam right as Google is about to launch a Nexus device with an exam slot.

Sounds to me like you need to maybe only carry around 14 of your favorite HD movies instead of all 22 of your favorite movies. I mean seriously 128gb of files on a phone is a little absurd. I don't care what kind of information it is. Consolidate or start storing stuff on a hard drive at home. This does not justify the whole SD card debate.

I will admit there is 50 GB of music on my phone, but the largest amount of storage is related to my work. The files and scripts I work with off my phone are huge. 128gb internally just wouldn't be enough.

Get a huge usb stick or flash drive instead of trying to make your phone do that job for you. You seriously get to work, power down your phone, pull the back of your phone off, pull the battery out, pull the sd card out, put it into the computer, transfer eight thousand files onto the sd card, wait 25 minutes for that to happen while your phone is not functioning, then take the sd card out of the computer, put it back in your phone, put the battery back in your phone, put the back cover back on (making sure to check it twice to be sure all the edges are snapped down), and then wait for your phone to boot up? You do this each day? I hate your life. Figure something else out.

I work remotely and manage a huge system for a fortune 100 company. I need to have the files with me so if I need to pull any of them up at any time, whereever I am, I have them. I also run a virtual machine on my phone so I can run the programs and scripts I have stored on exam card. If I need a bigger screen I do power down and pull the exam out and put it in my tablet, but I haven't touched a desktop PC for work purposes in a long while.
The world of "going into the office" and "transferring files" to and from a phone is dying. I haven't had a desk at an office in almost 3 years.

I'll say this for you people losing your minds (again, didn't we beat this horse to death twice when the S6 was announced) over batteries and SD cards, you need to realize giving your VERY SPECIFIC situation as to why you think Samsung's decision are bad, comes off as very egocentric.
I am one of those (apparently few?) that have never stuck an SDcard into their Note 4, never had to pull the battery and yatta yatta yatta, but I still get why you would want those things.
Problem is we can't even have a debate when the only real discussion points include very specific scenarios that in no reality should influence a company's design decisions.
Ultimately this isn't an arranged marriage. This isn't a family member, a pet. This is a souless mobile conglomerate, and they are in the business of selling phones. Not caring about the individual needs of a few Android elitists on XDA..

Look at development for the s6/s6edge. They might as well merge the forum for the absolute lack of development that's allowed with Samsungs new chips. I'm a member of xda for a reason. I'm keeping my note4. Note 5 means that roms become themes. I'm str8 on that
I'm a humble warehouse manager and many inventory programs allow offline snapshots of the databases for remote use. Multiple images of tens of thousands of parts with consignment and routing data take up over 80 gb. My technicians carry hd searchable schematics for thousands of components with dozens of configurations, giving them preloaded sd cards is a easy solution to making sure they can look up any part of the various wind turbine models you find in Wyoming where there's no data coverage. From other warehouses we pass off schematics for oil rig equipment in the same fashion which is also serviced where the cloud doesn't reach, construction friends keep hd cad schematics of dozens of projects on their phones so they can always double check notes anywhere. The sd card/removable battery market segment is very much alive in the form of hundreds of thousands of technicians and contractors keeping up with rapidly changing technology and information services who depend on their trusty companion device to always have the answer.

SD card and storage controversy

Such a huge disappointment to me personally....Samsung is apparently not allowing adoptable storage, meaning that everyone in Europe will be stuck with 32 gb minus whatever is reserved for the OS. I am still at a loss as to how Samsung came up with the brilliant idea to have only 32 gb models available.
It seems that the same also goes for the new LG G5.
Well, I was very close to buying my first ever Samsung phone....
It might have to do with the ufs storage being so fast that sticking a cheap/slow sd card will hamper loading times with apps that are installed on it . Thats my guess at least.
Something like this will probably work. I would bet this technique will work fine on the s7 with either no or minor modifications.

I think it's a good idea. Store your media in microSD, let UFS handle apps. There is a good write-up here to understand the concept.

Adoptable storage is really only useful for two things:
- An SD card placed in a phone or tablet and never to be removed

There's also the bit about how SD cards have a limited number of times they can be read from and written to. Using an SD card the "normal" way means failures are uncommon. When you start caching data and reading and writing at a rate higher than a card was designed to handle, problems can arise.

I personally prefer it split. The default folder structure is a complete mess and its such a pain having to find my documents, music, camera folders etc when they are all mixed in with junk folders so its much better to have them stored separately on the sd card. I just wish that Chrome would add the option of changing the default download location.

Same here, I was going to pre-order one with 64gb or 128gb but only 32gb available; what a disappointment. I don't like to use micro SD card. I'm not getting one for that reason.
I'm holding out for a 64gb model. 32gb just isnt enough,
This won't affect me, since I don't game, my 16gb S4 already has enough OS/app storage, & I use my 128gb SD as static music storage. However, I agree that this option should be present for people who have different usage patterns than mine, especially since Sandisk just released super fast SD cards. Even better would be 64/128gb built-in to make the point moot for just about anyone.

Samsung's explanation seems kinda dumb, they could have just added that option in Developer settings or something.
I wonder if this is something that could be enacted in a custom ROM.
I guess I understand the disappointment but 32 gig is plenty of room especially if ya pack all pictures and music off the side.
It will be yet a better reason to root and free up bloat of space is an issue??

Samsung doesn't care about XDA people, and rightly so. You don't run a trillion dollar business based on whims of XDA folks. What's best for common man is what's their aim. And I applaud them for thinking beyond geek mentality. Same goes for LG.

I understand and kind of agree with this, but by this same reasoning, they should never have brought back the idea of expandable memory in the first place.
Virtually all of the people you refer to as not needing, caring about, or even necessarily understanding the idea of adoptable storage are not much more likely to need, care about, or understand the idea of portable storage either.
And yet, here we are with the SD card slot re-added to the 2016 models. Samsung must have been responding to a minority of their consumers complaining about loss of expandable storage or they would never have done this.

The idea remains the same as with the GS5, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Expandable =/= adoptable.
Once a storage device is adopted, it becomes part of the system and is no longer removable. Sure you can physically remove it, but you'll be prompted to put it back while apps and services crash on your phone or tablet. It's adopted — taken in and loved by the system, and made part of the whole.
This means Adoptable storage is really only useful for two things:
An SD card placed in a phone or tablet and never to be removed
A USB storage device attached to your Android TV box, and never to be removed.
When you insert an SD card into the HTC One A9 (the only device I've been able to try it on because Google hates SD cards) you have the choice of using it as a Portable device or an Internal device if you go to reformat it. If you choose Portable, it acts like any other SD card and you can take it out and swap it between devices at your leisure.
If you choose Internal, things change. The device is formatted as a local, 128-bit AES encrypted EXT4 drive and mounted as part of the system. It's then set as the preferred storage, and you're prompted to move data over. Newly generated data is placed on the adopted storage by default.
If you try to remove it, things go haywire.

Previous post to mine said no adoptable storage on s7 because the great majority of buyers wouldn't understand or care about it.
I was pointing out (or trying to, at least) that if that was the reason that adoptable storage was not included in the s7's version of MM, Samsung probably wouldn't have resurrected the SD slot at all, since the same logic would apply (i.e. the vast majority of buyers for a huge, huge seller like a Samsung flagship probably won't bother using the SD slot even for its remaining use as portable storage).

Well, without adoptable you can put it in and forget, no need to care about formatting and losing your data. It would create more confusion.
Adoptable Storage is fine for $100 phones sold in emerging markets because their internals are slow performance wise. For a flagship all its storage will perform at the lowest common denominator which is the speed capabilities of the external SD card. LG and Samsung's choice makes sense. Use the slower less reliable storage for big ass video, RAW, and FLAC files and the faster storage for everything else. Their approach also lets media be shared via the external SD being removable which is impossible with Adoptable Storage. Just because Google puts something out doesn't make it good. As for performance, I can't remember any long threads saying using external storage to play files was ever a problem performance wise.
And for those with the bucks your worries about slow external storage can be solved...
