Recover photos from nexus 6p bootloop - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I have nexus 6p that has entered into the dreaded bootloop right before i was able to upload my photos from my recent vacation. I am able to get into fastboot and recovery mode and was wondering if there is a way to get my photos off of it. I have been trying to use NRT pull command but it is giving me ABD Recovery device was not found. (phone is on bootloader) and I have no idea how to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edit:locked bootloader and no USB Debugging

Hello... What happened to your phone? Maybe it's yet time to fix your bootloop. Since you have access to recovery, it's not totally dead...
I guess you have the stock recovery?
Boot into recovery and select: apply update from ADB. From here, see if your device is recognized: ADB devices. Maybe you can try to pull your files from here. I'm not sure it will works, but worth to try!
Good luck...

Try:
adb devices
Do you have a serial number displayed?
About adb pull, I'm not sure about the syntax, you'll have to find d it yourself.
Good luck...

BLOD is usually indicated when you have no recovery mode. Is your bootloader unlocked? Even if you are locked you can still apply an OTA and maybe fix your phone. Side loading an OTA will not wipe your data but may help recover your phone.

Nexus 6P (Stock MMB29P) Stuck on boot after OTA, fastboot locked, adb sideload fails.

Hi
Since Friday my Nexus 6P freezes on boot animation logo.
I never tried to root my phone, neither force an updated on it (First time I went in recovery/fastboot mode was this weekend).
Friday morning I received a notification for an OTA update, so I clicked on it to install it and from this point my phone never started up again.
I tried many solutions but none of them worked, so I deciced to ask here finally as my last resort..
What I've tried :
Fastboot flash fails "device is locked" (and fastboot flashing unlock fails aswell because "oem unlock is not allowed" in dev options)
Recovery wipe data/factory reset works but my phone won't boot either (waited for ~1h)
Adb sideload OTA.zip (MMB29P → MMB29Q) fails "Verifying current system... System partition has unexpected content"
Nexus Root Toolkit (Flash Stock + Unroot with options Soft-Bricked/Bootloop) doesn't work
I run out of options, does anyone have another solution ?
Thank you
sorry I don't have ansewer except call google play support 855 836 3987

Get to stock recovery using this guide, once there wipe cache partition then wipe data/factory reset. If that doesn't work call Google or RMA like error629 said.

Read this thread. If I didn't know better, Id say it was yours.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/command-t3308390
if your bootloader is locked and you didnt enable ADB in developer settings, you're out of luck
Contact google.

Yes exact same problem. I'll try to contact Google or Huawei then..
So I contacted Huawei Support (since I didn't buy it from the Google Store) and they told me to bring my phone to a PSM. PSM took my phone in charge and now I have to wait ~2 weeks (they send it back to Huawei). I'll update the thread when I get it back, this might be useful to somebody.
were on the same boat..
i remember a mate of mine uncheck the oem unlocking in the dev option.. then an OTA update came out and i updated it.. now the phone is stock only in bootloader. i wish i could enable the oem unlock.. but the problem is the phone wont boot normal.. pls help
im getting frustrated with my phone.. im thinking of overvolting the usb port with 12V so the dealership wont know about the reflashing

That would be fraud. Have you tried adb sideload?
No not yet.. i tried researching about sideload.. but i cant seem to understand it.. perhaps do you have any guide on how to do it? Would be really happy if someone post a guide.
---------- Post added at 08:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:16 AM ----------
Also my nexus 6p wont enter recovery mode. It can only access the bootloader
So i cant make adb sideload to work because i cant access my recovery mode. It can only enter bootloader and barcodes and thats it.. pls help.. sigh..

If that's the case there's nothing anyone here can do or say to help you, your only option is sending it back for repair. Hopefully a lesson has been learned here.
Good morning
We should make group called nexus 6p bricked devices since we all got same problem .
I read in Google forum that March update released and some users got same problem after flashing it
So we have to make topic also called ( warning read before flash your ota ) at least to help new n6p users .
Ok so i got my phone fixed by my dealer.. So far so good. And they knew that i fcuked up my nexus so they've told me not to reflash the system again.
My nexus 6p is now bonestocked

I am happy to hear that hope mine fixed too , I think first thing you have to do is to unlock your bootloader and that's enough ATM .

I agree with this. Having an unlocked bootloader is insurance in case anything goes wrong in future.

help... possible brick. Cant get vendor rights in twrp to restore.

Somehow when updating twrp for my girlfriend lost rewrite rights. Have the dreaded lockout without a password even though she was never locked down. Suggested default password does not work. Wug-fresh tool kit is able to connect but gets stuck. Cant boot to enable usb debugging.

You should be able to go into fastboot and flash a complete factory image. I had the exact same problem. Using flash-all.bat command and image from Google website fixed phone but that also erased everything. Maybe someone else has a less drastic solution.

So at this point you have only written to the recovery partition? Is her phone stock 7.1.1? Encrypted? Rooted? Kernel? Try to provide as much information as you can. Have you just tried wiping the recovery partition and installing the stock recovery? You can also use NRT to install the previous version of TWRP you started with. That may get you back into the OS. Before wiping data, I would try the flash-all.bat method jhs39 suggests, but removing the -w switch to preserve data. Either that, or use NRT to flash stock + unroot (but select preserve data).
Got it back up and running. Could not get anything to connect through USB. Not even adb. Found a thread where someone had the same problem and tried skipsofts tool so gave that a go and low and behold it work. Got a little nervous for a bit plus had a few adults beverages. Hence the panic thread. Haha. Thanks for the response guys! She's back up and running on pure Nexus.

Hello... Try sideloading a full OTA of your choice from here: https://developers.google.com/android/ota#angler
It needs to be newer than the installed version. Not sure it will solve your issue though. Maybe someone else will chime in with a better solution...
If nothing works, RMA your device.
Good luck...
Thanks for the advice.
I tried to manually flash OTA but it falied because of the locked bootloader.
I am not sure if there is anyone could point me to do it via ADB. I tried using ADB but the phone is not recognized by my computer yet.

Hey...
Reboot into Bootloader. Select recovery mode with the volume rocker and press power.
Once you see the Android guy laying down with his belly opened, press power and tap volume up once.
On the menu select: apply update from ADB
From here type in a command prompt:
adb sideload "name of the full OTA zip you downloaded without quote"
Supposing you have prior knowledge with ADB. Let me know if something is not clear here...
Good luck...
I finally get ADB recognized Nexus 6p. But the ota stop flash at 46%. failed to read command: No error.

You might have to RMA. I believe "no command" means the emmc has died.

Probably so. There is one guy who found a 6P with a shattered screen for sale and paid a local repair shop to have the motherboard swapped out. Claims it cost him less than USD $100 but he is in South Korea. You're probably better off cutting your losses and finding another phone... after Huawei tells you NO three times.

just a follow-up to somebody might see encounter the same thing. I was not able to fix the phone.
With a locked bootloader and "encryption unsuccessful" page, you might try warranty first. If that does not work, you might want to take rescue OTA from google and flash it in recovery via " install update via ADB".
Please be aware that rescue OTA is different from system image and should be flash via ADB in recovery.
Good luck.

Here are Rescue OTA. One would need to flash it with ADB in recovery. https://developers.google.com/android/ota
The following one is firmware/factory image. One would need to flash it with fastboot while in bootloader mode : https://developers.google.com/android/images
Use the correct zip file according to your flashing mode ( recovery or bootloader)

Hello!
I have the same "Encryption unsuccessful" issue. It happened many times recently. First I replaced the battery, because it produced early sudden shutdown at 30-40%, and could run only for a few hours from 100% to 40%.
The new battery is enough for 30-40 hours as I use it, and can operate the phone down to 1-2% before shutting down.
But if I have to restart the phone, the encryption unsuccessful problem still comes up randomly after battery replacement. I can restart several times without problem, then randomly just fails. Mostly after software updates I guess... I have stock firmware, stock rom, etc. the only thing was made that I have installed TWRP, and wiped user data. Hope that helps. Can it be the defect of the emmc ? If so, how shall I diagnose it?
I'm very newbie android user, I changed from Windows Phone ( ) only a few months ago...
The question is what could cause the Encryption unsuccessful error? It's interesting, that if I enter any random numbers as unlock code, the phone tells that it appears to be valid, but unfortunately cannot decrypt data.
So I would like only to disable forced encryption, maybe that helps. Could someone point me to the right direction about what exactly should I do? Is it enough to flash a modded kernel to disable encryption? I don't want to root, or experiment with custom roms and I would stick to the factory firmware as much as I can, but without encryption of corse...
thanks!

Bootloader Unlock issue

EDIT: Well after a few hours of bashing around at it I managed to get the bootloader unlocked. However I am having one wicked time trying to get twrp installed as my recovery, and to S-off my device.
When I got to run : fastboot flash recovery twrp.img I get the error "unable to load twrp.img" Now I know darn good and well it is prob some stupid error on my part, but this is driving me batty and help would be greatly appreciated.
Brad
OK..Maybe I'm dumb...but I'd rather post a question than screw around and brick my phone.
Admittedly it has been a couple years since I had an HTC device. (Just got a Bolt today) Been to HTC Dev unlock to try and unlock my bootloader however I am running into an issue when trying to run oem get_identifier_token. Getting 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command. operable program or batch file.
Been thru this a couple times before on older HTC Devices (last one was an M8-HK Edition) and not had issues.
I installed everything it said to on the HTC site. But I'm stalled out at step 5 on the HTC Dev site. and can't seem to get any further than that. (and yes phone is in DL mode)
Anyone kind enough to help an old dummy out?

1. make sure you're in download mode, not bootloader
2. make sure twrp.img is in your sdktools folder
maybe a bad download of twrp?
The saga continues...
Now Im stuck in this weird loop after S-off getting this screen:
It says "your phone is encrypted" enter your lock screen password. I did and it said correct, but your data is corrupted. You must do a factory reset. I try that process, the phone reboots, comes back up to that same "your phone is encrypted"

How are you trying to format data?
Sent from my unknown using XDA Labs
Unlocked needs root and twrp
Honestly...I don't know where I screwed up. (in the various how-to's I read I didn't see a format data step) I took the phone to Sprint and they were kind enough to flash it for me...so I am back up and running. Booted into DL mode and verified that I'm still unlocked and S-off. But where to go from here I don't know. I'd love to flash twrp and SU, but paranoid about semi-bricking it again. I used to know how this crap worked but that was quite awhile ago. (a couple phones and a couple versions of Windows ago)

flashing twrp & SU isn't difficult...since you unlocked bootloader, you should already have the fastboot tools needed.
1. download latest twrp (3.1.1-0 as of now) https://dl.twrp.me/pme/twrp-3.1.1-0-pme.img
2. copy that img to your sdktools/fastboot folder
3. reboot into download mode
4. flash twrp: fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-pme.img
5. reboot to bootloader, then reboot to recovery
6. create a backup if u want
7. flash/install SuperSU https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/supersu/download/zip/SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822.zip
Thanks! Got everything back up and running now. Nice to have a phone I can use the way I want to again. TONS of bloat though.

flashing twrp & SU isn't difficult...since you unlocked bootloader, you should already have the fastboot tools needed.

Bootloop on N6P

Hi there.
So I'm using N6P for a year now and updated to 7.1.2 is I'm not mistaken . My N6P is fully stock with locked bootloader , no tweaking etc.
Was casually browsing through my phone suddenly it restarted and into went into a bootloop. I can only access the bootloader. I have tried going into recovery mode which just starts the loop over again.
I have researched just about everything and tried a lot . I just cant seem to get it working .
I really want my personal data on it , its quite important . If there isn't any more choice, then I will be forced to wipe it but until then any suggestions? Please help , thanks .
By the way , my warranty just expired a week ago so luck is surely not on my side .

Sorry to hear about that. I had the same problem with my modded 6p and had a full backup on my pc and was still under warranty so it worked out fine for me. Unfortunately for you you are most likely not going to be able to fix it even from wiping it. I had the same problem and because I had an unlocked bootloader I was able to do much more than you could with flashing stock images. If you can't enter recovery then you most likely have a brick and can't fix it. I'm not sure if there is a way via adb and fastboot commands with a locked bootloader to retrieve data but I'll let you know ow if I find one. What kind of data do you have? Google usually syncs things like your photos and apps downloaded will be saved in the google play store. I hope this helped?

Yeah I've tried countless things but it all comes down to me not being able to access recovery. Please do let me know if you do find one thanks . I have some very important docs as well as images in it that I need it badly . I disabled that sync feature as it took very long (for me) to back up all the media. Guess it was a big mistake ....

If you had USB debugging enabled then try this

I don't , its off by default ? I took a look at that page and tried it , when I fastboot devices , it can detect , but when I adb devices the list is empty .
I'm experiencing boot loop also. It won't boot into recovery. Only bootloader. I'm completely stumped.

Bootloop here too
Just tried to upgrade 7.1.1 (unlocked usb debugging enabled) to 7.1.2 using Skipsoft Toolkit. Upon reboot, it just keeps going thru the graphic animation. When I connect it it says 7.1.1 detected.
I am going to try again to upgrade it. Seems like it's working. problem is it says detected system is 6.0.1 now.
Hey, it also says it takes a while for the first boot, so I may have gotten all 21st century and impatient on it.
I also tried a factory reset after freaking out that I had laid a brick...
At least with the skipsoft toolkit I was able to communicate with it!
Here's hoping!

Well, although I can get to twrp, I am unable to do anything else. I can't find any clues that are up to date and it's a bummer
Didn't need to be a TWRP expert; just booted into recovery mode, selected the latest factory stock image and flashed it. back to a working nexus 6p and all i gotta do is re-root it, edit the build.prop to enable wifi hotspot (I'm on ATT) and all is groovy. Muchos props to mark and skipsoft toolkit!
Yesterday I also got a bootloop. My smartphone hovered and went into reboot. So it did not boot. It reboots. In the recovery he does not go.
Same here but with stock recovery
I am in the same exact situation. No root, everything stock and warranty expired a week ago. Coincidence..?
I have been able to enter the stock Recovery Mode, but from there I can't execute adb commands, only list devices and sideload..
is there anything else i could do from Recovery Mode ?
Thanks

Yes. If you haven't wiped/factory reset yet, you can load a newer OTA image from Recovery. Same or older OTA will not work. Set the device to update from ADB and then send it from PC. If you have wiped the phone, obviously the OTA won't work. This will work with a locked bootloader and no usb debugging enabled.

You could maybe try this ?

Please try this if you need to boot it and get your files off the phone, it worked for me and I was able to backup my pictures.
