Is Mate 9 6GB (AL00) now ok in the UK? - Huawei Mate 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello
I want the Mate 9 6GB version. I've searched the forums as much as I can understand and found that Wondamobile seems to be the legit place I can buy it from for the UK but there's still stuff I don't get and any help will be appreciated:
1) Will the AL00 international version be in full English, with google play and full UK functionality working on UK SIMS in the UK? (conflicting answers on their website maybe due to different dates)
2) From what I read I understand google play may work but does that also mean will everything else be ok? I mean, is google play just one aspect of it, but the rest may be in chinese (like settings, facebook, email etc). Or if google play works can I be certain that basically it's totally fine and will be a UK phone. I don't want a Chinese phone that just happens to have a UK version of Google Play on it!
3) Can it be rooted?
4) Would I be able to run my own Nova Launcher (pro)?
5) They say they refund any customs - does anyone have experience of this? (I don't see how/why they could)
Thanks in advance even if you can only answer 1 or 2 of the above

As I know, there is only chinese model Mate 9 that has 6 GB RAM. It can be rebranded onto international firmware, so you can use Google Apps same way as you're using international model Mate 9.
Sure, it can be rooted
You can use Nova Launcher (there were some troubles with specific functional, don't know does it hurt you). Search thread in Q&A.

That's very helpful thank you.
Yes wonda have replied to say that it should be fine too.
they also say I'll be able to do updates without losign the google play which is great.

I've the 6gb version. It's AL00 but I've rebranded it to L29c636 in essence the international version. I have no a launcher working perfectly too. All apps work apart from a Barclaycard app. Google integrated so no issues on that front. I bought mine from Gumtree, a chap has his folks send it over and he didn't want it. Paid... £600 for it! It's a brilliant phone.

Ah thats helpful thanks.
Im having second thoughts about the phone now though having seen techzilla's 1 month update review on YouTube. He claims the battery is rubbish and no better than S7, iphone etc.
Are you finding its not much different or does it seem to last more?

Having owned iPhones since the first generation I can only rave about the Mate 9's battery performance. I'm getting 10h+ SOT out of it, couldn't be happier.

Can I ask what firmware version you have in case you don't have the updated one which may be the cause of the alleged problems?

Why 6gb ram? Android can't work with more than 4
Mate 9

From what I've read that's contentious. One plus 3T only allow 4GB unless rooted but does huawei do the same?
If so I'll just buy one in the uk

My suggestion is to buy whatever is sold and supported in your region. Unless you realy have a knack for tinkering just get a device from an authorized local retailer and spare yourself the headache of having to deal with customs, rebranding, cross-flashing, etc.
Legal warranty = peace of mind. Just my 2 cents.

Well techzilla is talking out his rear end. I had the S7 edge exynos, got rid of olive after a few days for the Mate 9. The battery life is fantastic. I absolutely love the Mate 9 (6Gb Duane sim b158) and the battery life is why I love it so much. Also, when the time comes the battery is pretty easy to replace...
I'll tell you something, a lot of these review sites talk rubbish and hype. I did my own research, based on videos and then going out and trying. The Mate 9 had the best battery life of any smart phone I've owned. Period.

THanks mate yeah with the replies I'm getting here and his BS comments of getting a whatsapp every 3seconds and an email every 7 seconds etc I'm coming to the conclusion that there's a bit of BS in that review. Not a single person seems to agree with him.
Out of interest - how do you find your 6GB version? Do you find you are going beyond 4GB usage at all? Is it useful for having lots of progs in memory? Or using the camera (I red somewhere high RAM is useful for cam). If you do go beyond 4GB RAM usage are you noticing more battery drain with this?
Sorry for all the Qs but if I'm gonna drop close to £600 on this thing I want to make sure it's worth it!

Just wish it wasn't $350 for a 1st gen device in a soon to be crowded and lower priced market. I already have a MetaWatch Frame ($200), and would rather wait for Google to release something that I know will be supported for a while then drop the money on something that may or may not be getting new and improved apps a year from now. That being said, the Mirasol screen looks awesome and I like the overall look and features of the watch. For $250 I would have already pre ordered it, $350 is overpriced.

I hear what you're saying about smart watches in general are coming out overpriced but I believe that the Toq is comparable due to the added wireless charger that makes up for the additional cost. That is a feature which none of the others have at this time anyway. And believe me I am not trying to justify their initial high costs because I too think all of the smart watches in general should start at a lower cost margin than what they have started with when they first came out.
This watch is already available for purchase at USD399, anybody here getting it? The deal breaker with this watch is that it has no Ingress Protection (IP) rating. Yes, it is not waterproof. You spend a lot of money into something that is not waterproof, that is so not right.

Lol, I guess I should have mentioned that part. Without a Doubt the Toq is best out of Box. Its companion app has everything I needed (Except Tasker integration) without having to buy and/or wait for 3rd party apps. If the SDK for the Toq is release soon and Dev start cranking out apps, the Toq is a guaranty to be the Top Smartwatch in my opinion.

WOW, you gotta be kidding me? That is very impressive!!! Do you get a lot of email/txt/call notification during the day? Also, do you unpair it at night or keep it paired up 24-7? I know with my MetaWatch once the watch is far away from the phone, my phone keeps searching for it non-stop which drains battery on my Note 2 lol!!! So, every night I unpair my MW and N2.
Also forgot to ask, from the pictures, can you tell if Toq is tinner than SW2 or not? It definitely looks thinner than Pebble.
But can it....
Can it run google maps? I want to be able to wear it while I'm on my motorcylce and glance at it once in a while instead of only having audio telling me how close I am. Thanks and congrats on the new watch!

Rooting will not change the phone experience in any way... Swapping ROMs improve it though.
Welcome to the Note 4, I'm sure you'll love it!

I really love my Note 4. I am currently running Infamous ROM 2.8 and the performance is incredible. It blows the stock ROM out of the water.

Oh, but it will.. And it does. Rooting alone allows you to do most of the things you can do on a custom ROM, but you're doing it to the stock ROM. Even without a custom recovery, you can still modify system files, freeze/uninstall system apps, run root apps, etc.

Oh I know that, but I meant rooting alone does not degrade the experience. As you rightfully said, the experience can be improved drastically while rooted even on stock firmware.

Where did you hear that the battery life isn't good?
I typically get 2.5 days per full charge with between 4.5 and 6 hours of screen on time per charge depending on if I am reading, or doing media (games, youtube).
If anything I would wait for the Note 5, but that will be a while. I'd suggest getting the Note 4 because it's quite simply a very amazing beast of a phone and then using JUMP to upgrade in 6 months if you so desire.

Check for the official price for it in Germany, then you will know. Different countries have different pricing polices, some countries you will have to pay full prices, whiles others you can get them free or reduced price with a carrier plan.

Or there is just a question about Android 7.0 and the launcher ( compatibility ) ??

I am happy to assist you today.
ZenFone AR is using Vapor cooling system.
So don't worry for hotting
in normal usage(game and etc.)your phone will not get hot.
Asus devices are very good and compatible to others.
Asus supports you at least 3 years and more.
Don't worry for compatibility.
You can install lots of themes and you can manage it in settings.Asus home,Go launcher and etc.
Good luck.

I've been watching this phone since it was first announced at CEI, drooling over it and finally, it's coming to the USA, Verizon only and I probably won't be able to get it because it won't be rootable >:
Although, it's such a monster, I might HAVE to give up rooting. There's never been a device like this one. Anyway, for you guys that have it, how is the pricing? Is it comparable to other high end devices?

ZenFone AR is best phone at CES 2017.
Comparable to Iphone 7 plus.
If you want a lower price(with lower specs)you can but ZF 3 deluxe special edition.
It's not available in all countries.
Taiwan, china,USA and ... has ZenFone AR on store.

Verizon is locking bootloaders on all the newest devices that have come out this year
@ Vonarian, no, i won't try this.
But, how do you know, this phone isn't rootable ?!
I'm not from USA ( Verizon )
What about the near future ? Any chances to root this phone ?

You can root.but with a very VERY high RISK.
Asus devices have a very high Security.
So it's very hard and risky to root.
i have a fonepad 7 rooted.my device bricked more than 5 times!
Okay, thank you
So, without root, do i have some disadvantage ?

I don't think so.
Asus is letting you have a more free hand.with auto-start manager you can control startups and background apps.
Good luck.

You have a disadvantage if you want to backup/restore your apps WITH data from one device to the next or after a factory reset. You're at a disadvantage if you do mind the bloatware that comes with a phone, you want to use V4A to enhance audio output, you want to theme, you want to have custom roms, or you want a better kernel and an over all better Android experience. If you want those things, you know the things most of us come here for, then not being able to root puts you at a huge disadvantage
Hmm, i see
I don't know what to do, i owned several phones over the years and i rooted all of them
Why is so difficult to root the ASUS phones, actually?

I'm not sure about ASUS phones, I've never had one, but in the case of the Verizon AR and other new phones on VZW, it's the locked bootloaders that VZW has that blocks rooting

Bloat is not heavy on this phone. You can uninstall most of the preinstalled apps. I do feel the kernel could be better. I'm hoping some updates from Asus improves it.

No phone has everything, but, the Note4 has a lot of features, some of which are seldom found on any new phone.
If you're a heavy S-Pen user,it'd be a hard sell to ditch the Note 4 for any other phone.
However, there's nothing preventing you from having both phones:
The Note 4 is going on 3 years since release, surely yours is already paid for.
Unless you are getting a very sizable trade-in credit,I'd keep it & get the ZenFone AR as well.
As for the Note series, any of the later models interest you?
I briefly owned the Note FE,I'd recommend it to anyone.
I sold mine to free up $$$ for the ZenFone AR (mine just shipped from Taiwan to the US via DHL moments ago).
Whether or not I keep the ZenFone AR for the long-term,I'll be getting another Note FE by years end.
It'd be nice if one phone had all the best features of both of these beasts.

New owner contemplating lineage flash

Hello,
I am new to android and recently ordered a Leeco pro3 for $120 (couldn't pass it up). I have read that it does not get ota updates in the US, so I have a few questions. Is there any detriment to using an outdated android version? Can I still run apps like facebook, twitter, and Snapchat? If i flash to lineage, will I still have all of the features (camera, Snapchat and facebook apps, etc)? I know the IR blaster won't work, but this isn't an issue. I just have read that certain apps won't work and want to avoid having a phone with no camera or no social media apps such as Snapchat. Thank you all ahead of time.

If all you need is just core functionality then I would there is nothing wrong with running the stock rom. Everything will work right out of the box and all of those apps you mentioned should run just fine. Not to mention you should get really good battery life. With that said if you like some of the features that come with Nougat based roms such as better Doze and Camera API 2 support so you can install apps like google camera and give you camera a nice performance boost then go for it. I have installed all of the aftermarket roms available in this thread and IMHO Paranoid turned out to be the best. I havent had a single issue with it and it has the latest drivers taken from Oneplus 3's source code.

Thank you for the quick response. Given the fact that you have gone through using custom roms, have you been able to use snapchat on Paranoid? I have read that custom roms cause the app not to work. Also, for someone who has never used an android device, how hard is it to flash a custom rom? I am very interested in having a better camera, as I will be coming from a Lumia 950 XL (it has been deteriorating and Microsoft seems to have given up on W10M.). I know that this isn't on that level, but anything I can do to get the gap smaller is good. I am also interested in other features, but have to ask - is your battery life significantly worse running a custom rom? That would be a turn off. Thank you again.

Nope my battery life is near identical to stock and everything works on Paranoid. My favorite thing about it too is that all viarations of Google camera also work which will give you great pictures and videos if you play around with them far better than stock imho. But play with it first you will find that you can do far more on Android than you can windows mobile. The ecosystem just doesn't compare. If you want to to install a rom then follow the guides but make sure you do your homework before just jumping in. It's not difficult but a screw up could brick your phone. But there are also many guides for unbricking as well
Lineage has new Android versions first, but doesn’t have good battery life on this device, use a different ROM. If you want Snapchat, you can use a ROM that passes Safetynet or maybe Magisk’s hide feature. Oreo ROMs don’t pass safetynet, but some other Nougat ROMs do.

This is great news that the camera actually improves. Do you have snapchat issues with this rom? I just want to ensure I am able to enjoy everything android has to offer (well, as much as possible on a year old phone for now), as I have missed quite a bit of apps on W10M.

This is very helpful, but I am confused how to tell. Do you know any roms that pass safetynet? Thank you both for your help.

Paranoid does, so does AICP I think, both for nougut, not Oreo ones yet as SELinux is not working on Oreo. There are others that probably do also, but I haven't tried them yet.

This is tremendous. I am already turning into an android fanboy and I haven't even got the phone. It is quite impressive that the opensource community can get the latest editions stable on these devices. I just saw no need to go buy a galaxy or near $1K smartphone when the SD820 is still a powerhouse in my eyes. Do I have to root to install Paranoid, or just unlock bootloader and flash? (I may be missing a step but am going solely off of how I understood the guides)

SD821, not 820, the model with the 820, the so called elite, has nearly no development.
You have to flash a file to unlock the American model’s bootloader. (The SD821 powered x727 I think it’s called...) the Chinese model x720 has an unlocked bootloader, but is missing US carrier frequencies so it’s worse for Americans.

It's a major difference in both hardware and support. I'd return it for a refund.

It looks like there are the same roms though. I even found paranoid. Is the 820 to 821 really that big of a difference? This thing was so cheap.

It stinks because I had an additional coupon bringing this to $120s. A dual sim (necessary for work) phone with a sd820 for that price seemed too good to be true and now it seems it is. However, if I can still get the play store ill be fine on any rom (would prefer a custom).

So ya you got the Elite. I do recall there being a couple of ROMs for that phone just poke around this forum and I believe you will find them.
you can find all the detailed specs here:
https://www.gsmarena.com/leeco_le_pro3_elite-8614.php
The only thing I would really be concerned about is band support and if you will get LTE or not. It looks like its a mixed bag here:

I checked the band support and that's good. Will this come with the play store though? And if not, is there a way to install it on the stock rom? I just want to make sure I have the basic apps (although I'd prefer a custom rom)
