When I connect my Nexus 7 to my Windows XP (SP3) PC via USB, it's obvious the computer recognizes it and it tries to install ADB drivers. Whether I choose to install those drivers or not, I still can't locate my device in the Windows Explorer Tree. I checked Disk Management for the hell of it and nothing but my PC's harddrives were there. There's an attempt to install drivers for "MTP" but that fails and I'm pretty sure that's the cause; however, I'm unable to replicate it, even as I uninstall/reinstall applicable drivers from the device manager the MTP failure never happens anymore. I did some googling and found a thread with someone who had a similiar experience. In turn, I downloaded https://www.box.com/s/2c25e8bc42ecce400afd to try a different set of drivers. Same problem. Driver install is fine for ADB, but still unable to see my device in Windows Explorer. I'm able to successfully connect the device to the PC with PTP for the camera. I can access DCIM and cache which can serve as a work around, but I'm hoping you can provide any ideas you might have. Thank you!
edit - ***resolution***: Ok, I figured it out...I had to disable USB debugging. I don't know if this helped either, but I installed these drivers as an alternative to the drivers that were originally installed: https://www.box.com/s/2c25e8bc42ecce400afd
While connected to PC, I switched to PTP mode because I was about to give up and just use that
I then disabled usb debugging and switched back to MTP at which point the drivers successfully installed and I could now view my device in Windows Explorer. I also believe downloading the drivers in the link above helped since the first crack I took at this was unsuccessful with existing drivers.
install pdanet on pc and it will install drivers for u so it will be recognized

Been battling with this on my XP machine since yesterday. I couldn't even get debugging to work until I installed NakedDriver. And even still, there seems to be no way to get MTP to work without turning debugging off. On my Win7 machine everything worked perfectly, both ADB and MTP, right out of the box. I have the Galaxy Nexus drivers installed on both machines (which I've read are compatible with the N7). I also have the latest version of Windows Media Player (I've read that some older versions have issues with MTP). Is anyone else able to run ADB and MTP on XP?

A: Does PDAnet let you use MTP and ADB simultaneously? Because I really don't want to install it if I don't have to. I got rid of it ages ago (too many things starting up at boot time).
B: I have a Galaxy Nexus also, and I have no issues on the XP box.
I wouldn't bother with MTP, it's not always showing the contents of the internal storage properly when viewed in Windows Explorer.
Earlier today when I was trying to set up a backup profile for it, it didn't copy all the files off. On closer inspection I found folders like TitaniumBackup to be completely empty, which is not true according to ES File Explorer on the tablet.
I tried connecting MTP again, with USB Debugging on and off but this made no difference. Also I'm only seeing the Notifications folder instead of 36 folders on the internal storage now, really random how it's working.

Same here. No change with the Asus drivers. Still can't use MTP when ADB is turned on.
poo. how do I transfer my audiobooks to this stupid device without working drivers?
1. Please disconnect Nexus7
2. Remove drivers on PC.
3. Toggle ON : Settings->Wireless&Networkings->More->NFC.
4. Re-connect device

1. Uncheck MTP, check the one next to it (Camera)
2. Unplug USB
3. Turn off USB Debugging (Uncheck it)
4. Plug in USB
5. Should say connected as camera, then a new window will pop-up allowing you to see your files.

Same observation here (a few months later) on stock Android 4.1.1 rooted.
It seems that new files in the internal memory remain invisible for a long time, but so far they have become visible eventually, sometimes a day or two later. I have no clue what could possibly cause this, and I have not found any trick or workaround that makes them visible, not even rebooting. Any hint is welcome.

Didn't work. Just shows up as a camera with the limited folder access one would expect.
Workaround
I now use the following workaround.
Install SDrescan from Google Play.
Run it.
If you already had your phone connected to a computer as a media device (MTP) and are watching the contents of your SD card or internal memory in Windows Explorer, press F5 to refresh your view. If not, connect it now.

I've "tried" to install asus driver, without success
I've tried to do as above with the help of the nexus toolkit, without success.
Everytime, the laptop recognize the device as android ADB interface.

It works! THANKS A LOT!!!
I'm using the Asus Google Nexus ToolKit V3.8.2 (donated version).
With my first N7 I was able to unlock and root.
Now I exchanged it against the N7 3G (HSPA+). I was able to unlock the device and able to install the bootloader 3.34. But root does not work. I think it is because ADB does not recognize the tablet.
What happens:
1.) the start screen of the ToolKit does not show the serial in the adb device list (If I restart the tablet in fastmode it list the serial in fastmode device list)
2.) if I start the Root and the ToolKit wants to reboot in Fastboot Mode it says "Waiting for adb Mode".
3.) If I restart on my own in Fastboot Mode and start the Root procedure then it reboots the device and says "Procedure will continue in 20 seconds Waiting for USB debugging to be enabled". It does not help to re-activate the usb debugging mode and it doesn't help to re-connect the usb cable.
4.) I started cmd and changed to the "Google Nexus 7 ToolKit" folder to call "adb-toolkit devices". But it does not show any device. adb-toolkit kill-server and start-server doesn't help. usb reconnect doesn't help.
P.S. As I'm a new member I'm not able to post inside the official support thread, sorry.
It could be a driver issue on the pc..
try this
download a pc app called usbdview . Do a google search to find it..
Run the program on the pc without the nexus plugged in. Delete all adb/ usb devices that you do not have physically plugged into your computer.
Plug in the nexus 7 refresh the list . Delete what ever comes up for the nexus 7..
Reboot the computer WITH the nexus not connected..
Install the NEXUS DRIVERS.. plug in the nexus and the computer should find the device as if its the first time used.
Try you tool kit again...
Sometimes when adb is started and stopped if there are several versions Windows can be confused and not stop the right driver but start a older version instead VERY Common windows usb issue. This works with any USB Trouble shooting for devices not just Android...

The nexus drives are a One driver for all Nexus Devices... This should only be a issue if there are multiple copies of usb adb in the windows registry . The usb drivers need to be removed then re installed or will just create more conflict. Usb Is NOT SO PLUG AND PLAY as it was intended.. Sometimes just plugging a usb device from one usb port to another in some computers can cause windows to install another copy of the driver. This is mostly on systems with a usb hub then a usb 2.o hub on a different port.. and so on.

This could it be. But I found a very simple solution:

When the Nexus 7 is plugged in there is a persistent notification that indicates "CONNECT AS / Media Device (MTP)". In this state adb devices will not show the Nexus, or undoubtedly any other device. Not exactly obvious, but if you select the second option "Camera (PTP)" the device is available for debugging (the lesson is ignore the camera, and focus on the protocol PTP).
This choice is persistent, and I'm guessing that with a band new device it will connect as MTP until told otherwise.

I have a nexus 7 2012 and i am trying to install 4.3. Of course since i have rooted it and have twrp on it i cant just ota update, so i tried plugging it up to my computer. Right now everytime i plug in the device and use it as a media device it works until i turn on developer mode and enable usb debugging. As soon as i turn on debugging the device disconnects at the bottom right showing my N7 (on windows 7), and whenever i look in my computer its not there also. The only way i can find it in this mode is in device manager in which it says "android phone". I figured maybe i have a driver problem, but if you look for drivers and try to install it says it already has them.
So does anybody know how to get it to work so i can reset it?
Delete the current drivers than manually choose the n7 drivers you downloaded from xda.
Or use a free program called usbdeview for windows to seek out all drivers associated with a device to make sure you uninstalled them correctly. Also I highly recommend dual booting a Linux distro which is much less finicky than windows when using android

Can you inform me on how to delete the current drivers?
when i connect with usb debugging mode turned on it connects as nexus 7 with a description as Android Composite ADB Interface. Also it is not recognized under the my computer setting at all. In usb deview it also has a purple dot all the way to the left beside the name instead of a green dot.
When i connect to the pc without usb debugging on the computer recognizes it as nexus 7 \ media device and i can use it as storage back and forth and in usb deview it has a green dot beside the name

I have used Nexus Root Toolkit twice successfully on two different computer, but on both occasions that has left the computer unable to connect to the Nexus 10 outside debugging mode.
I think it is "Step 1" in the driver install guide that tells me to:
2.) Launch Device Manager using the button bellow.
- Identify whatever device resembles your Nexus and right click it
- Select 'Uninstall'
- Check the box for 'Delete the driver software for this device'
- Select 'OK'
3.) Unplug your device and Launch USBDeview using the button bellow
- Use USBDeview to uninstall any;
- Android ADB Interface device's,
- Samsung USB devices,
- Google USB drivers
- ... or ANYTHING else you see that resembles your Nexus.
- In particular look for devices with Vendor ID
- "18d1" or... "04e8"
- Simply right click these devices, and select the option to:
- "Uninstall Selected Devices"

After doing this i can no longer connect the Nexus 10 as usb drive or/MTP. If i connect it, it simply says charging, and the Windows device manager doesn't list any new devices at all. Its like it isn't connected at all. If i enable usb debugging, i can use Nexus Root Toolkit without problem.
The computer in question is running Windows 8.1, and i first installed the Universal drivers that didn't work, and then got it to work with RAW drivers.
I assume that something got uninstalled that shouldn't have been, but i don't know what. Any help is appreciated, i don't fancy reinstalling windows
Hello, I am having a rather strange problem. My PC did the dreaded auto upgrade to windows 10 the other day and I also got a new Nexus 6P. It seems my computer won't recognize my phone, at all, when I plug it in via USB. It's not even showing up in the device manager as a problem, it's like nothing happens at all.
I have
- downloaded and installed the latest google usb driver (right click install)
- downloaded the latest mtp drivers
- downloaded official nexus package from Huawei
- installed ADB and android SDK and also reinstalled the drivers from the SDK manager.
- downloaded some update for windows media player as someone mentioned that could be the problem
- tried different cables
- tried different ports (usb 3 too)
I am really at a loss. My work computer works just fine with it so I know the phone and the cable are okay and other things work on those ports on my home computer. By the way the computer is Windows 10 pro - 64bit

Have you installed Google USB Driver for nexus 6p? If not, download Google USB Driver, extract it and save it in your any name folder that you can locate it later, plug n6p in your pc or laptop and it should pop up with USB option to select either file transfer or picture transfer, click one of them, Windows should be able to find n6p driver, if not, go to setting on your pc, device manager, then look at highlighted USB of your nexus 6p whether it is properly installed, if not, then install it by finding the driver that you extracted in that specific folder... Hoping this works for you.

Thanks for the response, but yea I already got the new usb drivers and installed them via right click install. The thing is though that in device manager the phone doesnt show up, at all, not even as a problem device. Its like its not there. The phone shows that its charging, but it doesn't recognize that its plugged into a usb port. Im really unsure what to do about this.

Did you install x64 driver from Google USB Driver? Check to see to make sure your USB android debugging is checked. It is kind of odd, try to reboot your pc and nexus 6p, then plug your phone in different USB port if your pc has extra USB port..

Ah I see what you are referring to. Well, here is the thing, how do I install those drivers? Remember I cant find it device manager to update the drivers. The only way I could find to install them was to right click the android_winusb.inf file and choose install. It said it installed okay, but of course its not working. Any idea?
By the way, I also have usb debugging on and usb configuration WAS set to MTP, but I just changed it to try the different variations, but now its stuck on charging and wont change to MTP, but I think its because the phone isnt being recognized by the computer because this morning at the office I was able to change the usb type to mtp and the others, but that computer recognized the phone... AGHHHH WTF

By the way, if your Android debugging on or check? Just turn "developer options" on your phone and then check Android Debugging. To install x64 USB Driver, on your pc, control panel, device Manager, look for phone USB Driver to see it has some kind of yellow triangle, if so update x64 driver from your extracted folder...

Hey Lucky, I really appreciate you helping me out here, but just so you know I am no newb with this kinda stuff. I have went through this process on a couple other computers with no problem, so when I say its not showing up in device manager I mean its literally not there. Its not there and just under some other name or with a problem icon, its literally not in the device list. Also, I do have usb debugging on

Please go to YouTube and type "install usb driver on nexus 6p" search and then follow instructions from the video... Good luck.
WAIT! I got it... Wow I would of never thought this, but apprently my Wacom was the problem. As soon as I unplogged my wacom tablet the phone picked right up... Strange... Anyways, case closed... freaking conflicts!
Okay hold on, still having problems. Well, now the computer dings when I plug it in, but it still doesnt show up. However when I change the phone usb to PTP the phone becomes visible on the pc in windows explorer (but still not in device manager) and when I put it to MTP it disconnects and I cant see it in windows explorer anymore, and still cant find it in device manager... Ugh...
Okay sorry for all the messages, but i did get the MTP working. I had to uninstall the reinstall the drivers a couple times... very strange, but whatever its working... yay!

Did you figure out the problem? I'm having the exact same problem with mine and with USB mode not switching from Charging and the PC not even recognizing a USB device was plugged in.
I found using a different cable solved my problem. Don't really know why cause the first one I used seemed fine and worked to charge it, but by using a different one, Win 10 recognized it and got me in the game.
