[GUIDE] to enable DualSim on SingleSim Devices - Moto Z Play Guides, News, & Discussion

WARNING: I am not responsible for damage to your phone through this guide, follow at your own risk.
Its only tested on EU Singlesim devices!!!!
First of all, thanks to @ilovemeow and @tomparr ! :good:
We all know, it was on the Moto X Play easy to "unlock" the DualSim ability by flash a firmware with including a DSDS Baseband. But Moto changed the Firmware layout. On the Moto Z Play are all basebands in the /fsg folder and after a modem wipe (dualsim=true or false) loads the matching baseband to modemst1 and modemst2. The settings for dualsim=true and the software channel are not editable right now.
So the trick is to get the baseband for dualsim in to the modem. I found a easy but dirty way to get the DSDS baseband loaded.
You need a Moto Z Play SingleSim Device (Mine is from Germany with RETEU)
Now the step by step guide:
1. boot in to twrp open the terminal and type
Code:
setprop persist.radio.multisim.config dsds
(thx to @ilovemeow again )
2. boot and make sure you got the Dualsim options in the Settings. If yes goto 3. If not load a Terminal Emulator from playstore and type there the command from 1.
3. Got to the settings and look which baseband you use now! Its important to note that!!
3. Open the RootExplorer and navigate tot he fsg Folder. You will find there a bunch of im.gz files (like addison_2.img.gz and addison_dsds_2.img.gz and so on…)
4. You must make sure which file for your phone is the right one (For the EU Phones its Addison_ROW and addisson_2.img.gz) You will see that the numbered files are linked to the other file in the folder. See the Picture.
5. Now you have to delete the baseband your phone use normally. At the EU Devices addisson_2.img.gz and addisson_row.img.gz
6. Now comes the magic! xD Just rename the dsds files from addisson_dsds_2.img.gz to adisson_2.img.gz and addison_dsds_row.img to addison_row.img.gz.
7. Reboot to bootloader and enter
Code:
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
now you can use both cards! :highfive: :victory:
NOTES:
1. there some bugs in the dialer! You cant save the settings that a specific number automatic called by sim1 or sim2
2. Second SIM Card/Modem only got IMEI 0! But works in German Networks without a problem.
3. You can loose your of sim1/modem IMEI if you do something wrong!
4. You got a bit more battary drain.
5. You can restore the default settings with just flashing the fsg.mbn file!

WOW
Thanks a lor for your work, bro.
I will to try today night.
Thanks again!

Can you confirm the command in your first "code" box is actually supposed to be "steprop" and not SETPROP?
Thanks for figuring this out - if I ever decide to unlock, I'll be giving it a shot!

Arg wrong typo thx

Thank you. It worked!

Did u use the "RootExplorer? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer

Total Commander should work also and is free of cost and ads. You may want to try this one first.

I didn't try totalcommander, because I had fear loosing the links between the files. If that happen, the baseband couldn't be loading right and you got no signal on both cards.

Anyone with build.prop from native dualsim device?

Only camera is giving issues reset is working as it should.
I'm getting restart error

How can the second phone line work without IMEI?

Many networks don't have IMEI Checks, so you can use it with a 0 IMEI.

thats not good bro,as far as i know you have a realy big problem thats only can be solved with a new flash, but im not 100% sure(but 90%).But when u have knowledge about android sdk/windows,and luck than this helps you, good luck, bro!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
you can unlock it with android sdk.phone must be soft or hardrooted.start the phone usb debug must be enebled for this method,i hope you have, open cmd window(windows)navigate to "platform-tools" from sdk folder where is da adb.exe, type step by step the following commands:
adb remount
adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key
after thats the lock is deleted, the joke is the phone ask for the patternlock, but you can type wat u want all is right now.
Method nr2:
The second option presented here is the quickest and cheapest option, since it costs nothing
You choose first "emergency". Give her as an emergency number
*2767*3855#
Now you can reset your phone and lock the screen is then gone, too, as your data.
i hope it helps
explanation:method1
If your set at the Androiddevice a screen unlock, it is in the folder / data / system file with the name "gesture.key" created. This contains the data as the correct pattern looks like, in encrypted form. If this is now removed with the rm command so the system knows the unlock does not work properly and take any pattern to be correct.

other methods are this:
Use Odin to restore or if you are lucky you made a Back-up In CWM or have a custom Rom in CWM Recovery Install that probs Gone!
or:
try wipe data(for you a bad method i know)

GPS on N9005 solution that worked for me!

...hello friends...I am writing this for all of you people that have a problem with GPS signal on your beloved Note 3 N9005...
...when I received my Note 3 for 4G LTE network, I didn't know that I will have any problems with GPS signal...although there is no LTE network in my country yet, there should not be a problem with GPS signal...so I have searched a little bit and found application that was the solution for my problem...
...anyway...let's start...I just want to say "Thanks" to the developers of the application...crypted and Zatta :good:
Please follow link bellow to download application...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198319
I did the following things in order to fix GPS signal...
1) You need to have rooted phone - there are plenty of links on the xda, I done my rooting from this link without any problems... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466423
2) Download TopNTP 1.0.4 application from the link provided
3) Place the application on your external SD card
4) Before instalation go to /system folder on your internal memory and mount rw for that folder manualy - you can do it by installing for example total commander app from the google market it is free...then go to buttons and create button with internal command, 119 Remount...it will create button that can be used for mounting rw partition...or you can use root explorer...
5) Install TopNTP application
6) Reboot your phone
7) Start application and go with already default settings...click on Install button
8) Save and reboot again
9) Try your GPS now...
10) If this is not working try with settings for your country and put General insetead of Derek Gordon's server, save and again reebot
THAT'S IT FOLKS!!!
There will be stored one backup file of your gps.conf file, don't delete anything...
I hope it will help your device to work as it should...maybe this will help someone...also...there is a full description of application and changelog for older versions...so check it if you want...
Thank you all...Cheers!!! :highfive:

1) Their program is still buggy - both for me and for you (your two files are the same) the program failed to replace /system/etc/gps.conf with their configuration that is somewhere in /data/data/by.zatta.agps/files I have also attached a (slightly modified) file that was there for me.
2) I have manually forced that file over /system/etc/gps.conf (with Total Commander - I think I am a registered user of the PC Total Commander for like 15 years now :good and I am going to test more tomorrow but to be honest the tests so far show that things are definitely not getting better with their TopNTP program on N9005

...Thank you for your gps.conf file... :good: ...you are right, their program is a little buggy...anyhow, I have tried several different things with x-note rom, alexander rom, hawkish, etc... and also with some other apps from apkmania, but the only application that somehow sucessfully managed to catch the gps signal was TopNTP...
...I tested all on my trip to the job, and back to my home...and it is working...I tested it with google maps as well as with Sygic maps...again it is working...I also checked the files you ask from me to post...they are the same...probably software reads configuration from /data/data/by.zatta.agps/files... and maybe app developers will do something to improve their software in near future...in order to save the gps.conf file directly to the /system folder...I hope...because that would be excelent...once again thanx for help and comments... cheers! :highfive:

No, the (otherwise perfectly normal Linux) device driver does not read the configuration from /data/data/by.zatta.agps/files, you are using the same gps.conf as you did before (and just like everybody else you get it from /system/etc) but since there are so many factors involved the placebo effect has completely mixed your findings.
If you want to test the other configuration go on your phone to /data/data/by.zatta.agps/files and copy that one over original gps.conf (Total Commander will tell you about remounting RW) and then reboot. Test it on average at least a week and see if things are clearly different than now.
In my phone it is increasingly clear that there is certainly no improvement.

Manually editing?
Hi there,
Indeed, TopNTP is'nt changing/editing the file gps.conf in my phone either.
Has anyone tried editing it manually with the lines TopNTP suggests?
Would that be possible at all? Or is there some checksum that won't cooperate?

Already tried that. I even opened the back side completely to check for the pins contact.
My phone works perfectly in other countries. It's just here at home that doesn't.
It did work perfectly until I upgraded to KitKat
...update to the old post...
...Hello to all people on xda forum...
...I just want to add one update to my post for all guys that still have problems with GPS and didn't solve the issue...here is a solution...I hope you will hit thanks button
...this is only for those people which have strange problem when gps hardware works, for example you can update your weather on weather widget, but somehow you can't catch any satellites when you want to find your way in the city...then problem is definitely could be fixed...I did it with several N9005 devices and always was successful...
The real credit goes to @SchecterRocker, where he posted how he solved the issue...actually you can follow his post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729322&nocache=1 THANK YOU MAN!!! :good:
First, as optional is to update your modem and bootloader according to your baseband.
Second, retrieve your default gps.conf file. Now you can go with tearing apart your device...just follow instructions that @SchecterRocker posted...or you can follow it here...ADAPTED LITTLE BIT
[[ INSTRUCTIONS ]] (See attached pics for details)
1. Remove the back cover, battery, stylus, SIM, and microSD.
2. Remove the 12 Phillips screws on the back.
3. Carefully remove the inner plastic shell (clipped in).
4. Take your time!!! DO NOT HURRY!!! Gently open around the edges until all edges and clips are loose ( you can use guitar pick ).
5. Observe the leaf pin locations shown below. photo01.jpg
6. This leaf is clearly related to the GPS, because bending it back restored my GPS to perfect functionality. TRUE!
7. Extra Carefully!!!! bend the leaf pin back into position, if you find a dislocated leaf pin. photo02.jpg
8. ALSO CHECK THE REST OF LEAFS!!! Replace the inner plastic shell, making sure to not damage the leaf pins.
9. Replace the 12 screws.
10. Replace the SIM, microSD, stylus, and back cover. START THE MACHINE!!! ...working isn't it???
Cheers!!! :highfive:

[HowTo] Enabling dual-SIM on single-SIM devices

Hi,
follow the steps below to enable dual-SIM functionality on a single-SIM XT1562 device.
IMPORTANT: Read the following before performing any of the steps below!
This HowTo is only for XT1562 devices. This has been reported to not work on XT1563 devices.
The second SIM in your phone will have an IMEI of "0" (as there was none set during manufacturing). In some countries like the UK, many providers don't allow phones with such an IMEI, so you will not be able to use SIM cards from these providers as your second SIM.
Only one SIM (the one used for data connection) can use 3G/LTE bands. The other SIM card can only use 2G bands (this is a hardware limitation of the device). In some countries like Sweden, some providers sell cards that can only use 3G and not 2G, so you will not be able to use these cards as "secondary" (calls/messages only) SIM.
If you plan to do a Nandroid backup or use Titanium Backup for your data currently on your phone (because you don't want to copy your data by hand) or if you want to flash a custom ROM like CyanogenMod, you will need to unlock your Moto X Play (instructions below). Note that in this case your device warranty will be void.
Here are the steps to enable dual SIM functionality:
If you want, make a backup of all your data. You can copy your files by hand, to not lose your warranty.
If you don't copy your files by hand but with Nandroid backup or Titanium Backup (to restore app data as well), you will have to unlock your device, and therefore lose warranty (Refer to this guide for unlocking: http://www.gammerson.com/2015/08/steps-how-to-unlock-bootloader-of-moto-x-play.html. Note that all your data will be lost, and your device warranty will be void.). In this case, easiest way is to boot up a custom recovery (see this thread) and make a Nandroid backup to an external SD card. Alternatively backup the apps with Titanium Backup and copy the internal SD card files by hand.
Flash a dual-SIM stock firmware: Find a stock firmware that matches your region best on this site (search for "XT1562" and "DS" for dual-SIM). Follow this guide completely for flashing the firmware on your device.
If you are fine with the stock ROM and don't need a custom ROM like CyanogenMod, and you copied your files and data by hand without root, you are now finished and can use your dual SIM phone.
If you want to flash another ROM, or restore a Nandroid backup or Titanium Backup, please continue with the following steps.
Flash your favorite ROM (e.g. @squid2's CM 12.1, it's running great), or stay with the stock ROM.
Unlock your Moto X Play (if not done for the backup before yet): Refer to this guide for unlocking: http://www.gammerson.com/2015/08/steps-how-to-unlock-bootloader-of-moto-x-play.html. Note that all your data will be lost, and your device warranty will be void.
If you're on stock ROM, flash a custom recovery (see this thread again) and root your device by flashing SuperSU from the recovery.
Restore your Nandroid or Titanium backup.
If you're not on stock ROM, add the following lines (needs root) to a new file /data/local.prop or append it at the bottom of /system/build.prop:
Code:
ro.gsm.data_retry_config=default_randomization=2000,max_retries=infinite,1000,1000,80000,125000,485000,905000
persist.radio.plmn_name_cmp=1
persist.radio.force_get_pref=1
persist.radio.multisim.config=dsds
I'd prefer the /data/local.prop, as you do not need to make the change on every ROM update.
If you're on CM 13, you will have to add this line as well:
Code:
ro.telephony.ril.config=simactivation
Make sure that either file has read/write permissions 644 and is owned by root:root (with 'chown'). To ensure the r/w 644 permissions, go into the properties of the file (e.g. with ES File Explorer), and check that the file is readable and writable (rw, or 6) by the owner, and readable (r, or 4) for the group and others.
Finally, reboot one last time.
Disclaimer: I do not take responsability for any damage that may be caused to your device or for the warranty that will be void after following this HowTo. Please make sure you have an appropriate device (XT1562) before flashing the dual-SIM stock firmware.
Credits go to @ALD76 for originally posting the build.prop/local.prop modifications above, and to all the testers who risked their devices to try this out and encourage other users. And to @heisert, for mentioning that unlocking is not necessary for flashing official firmwares. And to @GtrCraft, for the local.prop modification line on CM 13.
Have fun and enjoy your dual-SIM phone.

What is your base model and rom? I have XT1562 on UK rom obviously it's only single sim so for me to get it to work im guessing I would need to flash a base rom that has a dual sim enabled modem such as the Asian rom.
Have you tried this?
Sent from my XT1562 using Tapatalk
Interested in this also - from the other thread, I think most were successful with the Asian variant (unsure of the EXACT rom name). IMEI will be blank, some have had it work anyway, others not.
I'm interested in this thread now, as the other one was messy, full of "it can't be done" and people discussing removing the plastic, etc... If someone can suggest the exact name of the stock ROM that works and what variant or ROM they had previously, maybe we can get a more definitive answer.
jellysheep said:
Hi,
many Moto X Play users like @Quasar have reported a working second SIM card after flashing a dual-SIM ROM and/or adding a few lines to build.prop/local.prop:
With the lines above in build.prop, I get the "SIM cards" menu in system settings, however it always reports SIM 2 as empty (though card is inserted that works as SIM 1).
Do you have any ideas how to fully enable the second SIM card?
Thanks, jellysheep

Done. CM with DS on a SingleSim Device RetEu.
It's just a question of the right Baserom. I tryed the french Firmware plus the trick from the initial post and it works.
You will lose data connection until you do the trick, so make sure you are in a wlan area to set uo your device.
here is a fast link to the base rom:

The trick I mentioned:
Add the following text to your build.prop (it's in the system folder). I didn't test the option with a local.prop .
ro.gsm.data_retry_config=default_randomization=200 0,max_retries=infinite,1000,1000,80000,125000,4850 00,905000
persist.radio.plmn_name_cmp=1
persist.radio.force_get_pref=1
persist.radio.multisim.config=dsds
@odysseus84: Thanks for the firmware link!
It worked on my german XT1562, and restoring the Nandroid backup (CM12.1) went fine as well. Now I have the same system as before, but with dual sim enabled.

You're welcome. It is just a bit annoying that we have to reenable DS after a flash. I wasn't able to do it with the local.prop

You mean after a CM upgrade, when just /system is flashed?
You just have to put the mentioned lines in /data/local.prop, and make sure it has user root:root and permissions 644 (just like build.prop).
Does this need to be done using CM or can it be done with stock rom?? Very intrigued

Using the official dual-sim firmware that you flash anyway works fine. Just take care to select the right firmware version (model and region).
EDIT: But you will need root to add the needed lines to build.prop/local.prop.
I've got an XT1562 EU
just to be extra xautious, which firmware?

Have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...single-sim-t3194533/post62790748#post62790748
You most likely need something called XT1562_LUX_RETASIA_DS_5.1.1_LPD23.118-12_cid7_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC
To further ad to the discussion:
You can just add the lines to a stock XT1563 (Canadian) and it will show you the 2nd SIM.
I know because I have done it.
BUT the problem is (I'll discuss further below) that it doesn't give you a 2nd IMEI for the 2nd SIM which in Canada and lot of other countries is a no go.
A lot of countries require 1 IMEI per SIM so dual SIM phones require 2 IMEI. This isn't iron clad - China doesn't have this requirement and some EU & South American countries don't either. However if you're Moto X Play is having issues with 2 SIM's (non stock units) it will be because your location requires the 2nd IMEI. It is possible to add a second IMEI number to the phone but you are going into dubious legal territory IMO. That's why I'm not going to spell it out for you here but rest assured that if you google it you will find the necessary information on how to add the IMEI for the second SIM slot.
IMO the IMEI number missing on the second SIM slot is the only thing different once you have added the lines to the build.prop from above posts.
Properly modded with the 2nd IMEI + build.prop a single SIM Moto X Play would be identical to it's dual SIM cousin IMO.

I was seeing crashes while trying to modify settings for the second SIM.
Is everything working (other than not having the IMEI)?
Unlocked bootloader, got TWRP, rooted, downloaded firmware
Will try tomorrow as too late now
thanks for your help - hoping it works

Curiosity got the better of me. I did the build prop changes, running Asian dual sim firmware but sim slot 2 always show no signal. It reads the sim as it shows the phone number.
@jellysheep Thank's for your Tipp for the local.prop. I had to add the file too the group 0000-Root. Now it works.
Maybe you could mark the thread as [How to] and put the Guide into the initial post, so people do not have to search the whole thread.
Tanks again

Yeah, I had planned to do exactly this, thanks for reminding me. [emoji106]
So anyone in the UK got this working?
I did this to my single-sim (which was supposed to be a dual-sim version, damn you retailer!)
I flashed the EU dual-sim firmware.
I get to put in my pin etc for the second sim, but the second simcard slot doesn't have an IMEI. So it can't register on a network.

Help with 'How To Install A Custom Recovery On Your Device'

I'm following the beginners guide to release my Moto X Pure from it's shackles and am getting this from the command prompt on step 2.
Can anyone provide some assistance?

You need a newer TWRP image most likely, if you are using the one in that tutorial it is OLD!!!
The Moto X Pure/Style is officially supported device. Go to https://dl.twrp.me/clark/ and download
twrp-3.0.2-0-clark.img
Make sure your bootloader is unlocked and enter the following command:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-clark.img
Do NOT reboot, then on your device press VOL DN until it says Recovery and press Power, TWRP should start and allow changes to system and perform a backup to the SD card.
And BTW, pretty much everything else in that tutorial after the bootloader unlock is incorrect/outdated. Look in my signature for the proper way to root if that is your objective.
Thanks again. Petition signed.
Is there an up to date sticky/guide on editing build.prop? I believe I need to add the following line so I can use native hot spot.
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
I've downloaded ES File Explorer but I don't know if something has changed in Android or in the Explorer, but the guide I'm following isn't helping.

I think you are chasing the wrong problem... The fix you have is for when carrier's block tethering in provisioning, if it worked fine in Z then that isn't the problem.
I assume you tried the normal cache wipe, network reset, and maybe even factory default?
You need to try to use it and when it fails pull a logcat and see why.

IDK. Lots of unlocked devices still honor the carrier's flag in regards to hotspot. The Nexus devices and my gfriend's Pixel does. A new unlocked Axon 7 or the Moto Z Play do not. I've hard reset the device and now that it's been bootloader unlocked, reset again. I haven't wiped any cache or a network reset. Are those done automatically once a factory reset/bootloader unlock is done?
My device says to contact the carrier in regards to getting the hot spot enabled. I haven't tried it again with the bootloader being unlocked, but I will give it a go this morning and see what happens.

Hmm... That sure sounds like carrier provisioning, weird... I technically don't have tethering on H2O but it works fine and I am stock and bootloader locked.
EDIT: Well, I am a bold faced liar... I tried it now on H2O and got the "Account not set up for tethering" messaging, I know it worked on AT&T before I switched last month but I think my account there had it. Now I am curious too...
Maybe best to search in the Moto X area and if you can't find a thread about it (I looked, but only for a minute), start a new one... the title of this thread won't likely get help for this problem.

I found this:
Enable Wireless Tethering Rooted Moto X Pure
1. Modifying system files could render your device useless, so by continuing you’re assuming that risk
2. Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/
3. (Optional) Make a copy of the build.prop
4. Open the build.prop file with a text editor
5. Add the following line to the bottom of build.prop file: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
6. Save the file and reboot your device

Might root again and try it, I haven't had a need for root in a while... Will see, I am lazy so maybe I won't until I need to.
I generally prefer using Solid Explorer in Root Mode and QuickEdit for editing root files... ES File Explorer was once king, but became overbloated garbage the last couple years.
That's what brings me back to editing the build.prop.
I have a ES file Exporer and checked off the root option so I should be able to access everything on the device.
I have never edited the build.prop and need to find the file path for it.
A sticky or something on editing build.prop would be great.

No likely... It is so rare to have to edit it anymore, so few things require it.
Try a different explorer... ES is junk, use Solid or Root Explorer

I was confused by the "you can bump it if you need to" comment. I took it as being something extra in addition to replying. I wasn't able to figure out the root path, but using the search function on ES Explorer I found the build.prop file, made the change, and presto....I know have hotspot working. Next up is to research the popular ROMS. I'm interested in some of the built in features like ad blocking and of course Nougat. Thanks again.

[Help] Repacking .zip file ROM into .nb0 file with heineken tool

Hello, I am trying to fix my bricked phone but I do not know how to repack the files to flash them with the OST. I have the program (crack by heineken) and the Android 7.1.1 stock ROM .zip. When I try to choose my unpacked .zip it tells "error: list not exist" and in the post where I got the tool it tells "edit files "list" of unpacked nb0 image, remove .md5 file from list". How do I create this list from my .zip file?
Thank you for your help and apologys for bothering you with such simple question but I don´t know much about this.

3320 should give you 2017 June's version, 3700 should give you state after the October's patch (the one with the RAM management bug).
Or vice versa. I assume higher number is newer version

Hello,
I hope this will finally fix your problem.
Make shure, you've deleted the "C:/adb" folder.
Let's start
First of all, download the 15 seconds adb installer.
Execute it and always press "Y" and confirm everything.
Once you've done that, download the latest "Platform Tools" (for windows).
After downloading, extract the archive. Now drag all the files from the "platform-tools_r28.0.1-windows" directory to the "C:/adb" directory. Overwrite all files if you get asked.
Now, boot your phone in "Download Mode" and connect it to your PC.
Open OST 6.0.2, click "Edit Phone Information", wait until it's done and then flash the nbo rom to your device.
If that does'nt work, I could help you via TeamViewer.
But no matter, good luck and report me the result.

The problem is, for flashing partitions, you need an unlocked bootloader. But there's no official (and no free unofficial) way to unlock the bootloader on the Nokia 5. It's not a bad joke.

Think about windows doing this. After BSOD/crash/update error, for whatever reason, PC does not boot so you want to enter BIOS but it tells you to log in the administrator account. But you can not log in because all you can reach is POST screen (the black with the cpu and hardware information written). Would that not be stupid?
Also, you mentioned unofficial way? Nokia repair people did not find problem so this looks like only way for me. Can you tell me more?
