How to fix this boot loop! - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I got my LG V20 back in December, its running android nougat can't remember what version though but android 7.0... I woke up this morning with a no service icon near the service bar so I opened the cover to take out the battery and put it back in to see if it helps. Next thing I opened my phone and it stayed on the Boot logo for a while, then the screen turned off and opened again with the boot logo still there and over and over again... I really need to fix my phone before my diving trip next month! Your replies are admired!!
Thank you,

Not to sound like a **** but you know people already posted on how to unbrick a lg v20 right?

Not to be a **** but you do realize he isn't rooted or getting any messages as it relates to screwing up the device by modifying system software?
I hope this isn't the same boot loop that affected the v10 or g4 models.
OK if it is continually rebooting and you haven't rooted or screwed with the software then it is likely a hardware issue.
The only things I could suggest short of returning it for a replacement is:
- remove sdcard if you have one, corrupted sdcard can cause this.
- try safe mode, turn off device then turn on the device with power button and volume down key held), select safe mode see if it boots that way if it does you have a bad app causing this.
- factory reset if that doesn't work.Turn off the device, Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons,When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.

What variant do you have? Can you access recovery mode? Can you access download mode? Is your phone rooted?
Lets start with the answers to each of these questions and we will go from there.

I don't know where you got rooted from my question. The unbrick method I'm looking at deals with using download mode to re-flash the system. If something is corrupt or became corrupt then re-flashing the system should solve the problem. Just my suggestion.

Are you sure you cannot get into download mode? Hole power til you see the LG logo twice, then release so it powes off completely... Then hold only Volume up and plug the phone into your computer while holding it.

I had the same problem. Spent nearly 10 hours trying to figure it all out but never made any progress. I sent it to LG though and they are working on fixing it up right now.

I am not sure if you this will help 100% but what I did was installed the recovery in my phone then I updated my phone. Which made my phone go in recovery and if I restarted it gets stuck in recovery. I wasn't able to get in download mode as well.
If you can get in "recovery" then you can use this fix
to get in recovery hold the vol- and power button until your phone vibrate and you are in recovery.
then execute these commands through adb shell
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
Edit--- after executing the commands flash the stock rom--- using LG flashing kit. Search the xda and you will be able to find a thread that details how to do it. yes you will be able to get in download mode, i got there in 2 tries.

Sorry, can't read the link, but by recovery, you mean TWRP, right?
So basically, after rooting we can still do an OTA update, and it's still safe, right? But once we installed TWRP, we should not do any kind of OTA updates?
For TWRP, is this method good enough:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTJI9ThY0mk
To Root, I will use this method:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y45SXPRb31o#t=149
Sorry if I am steering topic off-course but I just wanted to make sure others don't do the same mistakes and end up in same situation.
Your suggestion of not doing OTA update is really valuable, so I wanted to build on that.

The easiest and the way that really worked for me was to root it using "Vroot" http://www.mgyun.com/
but you should check which phone you have and which OTA version you have. As far as I know 11g and 11c for korean variant can only have cwm i am not sure if that is true for other phones as well. But be sure to check it. TWRP only works for 10x versions (where x is any alphabets) still dig deeper, I might be wrong.
But you should never update your phone after recovery.
and backup your IMEI number ... the thread i posted earlier try using google translate and download the apk to backup your IMEI by Hoang.

Bricked Recovery

Hello All,
I'm not sure how I bricked my recovery, but I did. When i try to boot into recovery via quickboot or power off -> Vol DN + Power. I get the little dead Android guy.
If I leave it connected to my computer and boot into the recovery I get like 15 or 20 little 'new drive' windows that pop up (like putting in a flash drive) except these say they need to be 'Formatted'. Of course I just closed those. There is one drive that you can browse though and it looks like the image files for the phones OS. But I'm not sure what they are...
Anyway, I have tried to do the Full reset (see link)
http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-res...tock-firmware/
and thought that might take care of it... but I still get the little android on his back when I try to boot into the recovery SW.
Oddly enough, you can still hold down the power button to hard shutdown the phone and reboot into the ROM (flashed back to 10b) using the .TOT file and the process in the link above.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try this:
- unplug your device
- make sure device is completely off (hold and press power button until it turns off completely *when it cycles into the LG logo, continue to hold it and it'll turn off)
- give it a few seconds, then hold "power" + "vol down"
- AS SOON AS LG LOGO APPEARS, let everything go, then ONLY push "power" and hold it
- should take you to a white screen asking if you want to erase data or something, just push "power" once
- should take you into recovery
If this doesnt work, let me know and i'll give you directions on how to unbrick back into stock factory

Thanks for the try... but I still get the dead android guy.
Its my wifes phone and she is kinda getting tired of me trying to get a custom rom on it for her...
I did to the TOT flash with the LGFlashTool and it worked to change the ROM, and did something to the recovery.. I was getting a blank screen before the TOT flash, but after when trying to boot into recovery it showed the dead android on his back. Thanks for the thought though.
Moved out of the Development Sections, as this does not belong there.....Thanks.

I would love to get to MicroMod's stock 12b rom for her... but I can't get a custom recovery on this darn thing... I normally avoid OTA's as well. but I was hoping that would fix my recovery problem...
It sounds like the TOT flash fixed it though (i just didn't realize it at that point). I thought the little android on his back was a bad thing... but if that is just what happens with the stock recovery, then I was OK and didn't know it. I appreciate your help and input! :highfive:
I'll see if she is happy the way it is or not... right now it is just stock Rom; rooted. maybe that is good enough for her. It just bugs me I couldn't get it to install the way I wanted.

Original stock is the 10A; that's what mine was when i first got it. there were a couple of OTA's after that, i think that's the 11-12 variants. So, i'd try with the 10 stock rom first; then reroot, add twrp/CM recovery.

[Q] LG G2 D802 Bricked..help me please

Hi!
I managed to get my device totally bricked.
Phone is on bootloop and I only get LG logo and then "Security Error" message. I can't enter recovery mode or download mode. Only mode I'm able to go is the "Hardware key control mode" mode, where I can see my IMEI code. I can't get windows or linux to recognize my phone. I've tried several drivers, but no luck getting my laptop recognize my phone. I have also tried couple of tutorials to solve this problem, but the main problem seems to be that I can't get my laptop to recognize my phone.
Is there anything I could do or should I just buy a new phone?
Hi Jutei,
What led to this bricking? Were you trying to install a ROM? Which ROM was it? Was it a wrong variant? Please be specific as to what you did to brick it..
Also, some people have seen success by installing this driver. Are you familiar with ADB?

Hi deathbytalkshow!
I ended up to this stage by rooting with this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448887) and trying to flash with this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/development-d802/rom-xenonhd-d802-t3036576).
First I wiped data and cache. Then rooted and it went trough with no problems. I tried to flash with this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager. It booted to recovery and started flashing. Soon it said that flashing failed and after reboot I found myself in this bootloop.
Hope this helps someone to help me.
Try this:
1. Turn phone off.
2. Press POWER+VOL DOWN
3. When LG Logo appears, immediately release POWER+VOL and press and hold VOL UP+VOL DOWN

Hi, I tried this and got to the factory reset window. It started to do reset, but pretty soon it booted and went back to bootloop. So this didn't help. I'll try those ADB drivers today.
Hi, tried adb drivers, but no luck. My laptop still doesn't recognize my phone. USB gives power, but beside that windows doesn't seems to notice that my device is plugged. Is there anything else I could try?
so you didnt make a backup before flashing? what recovery did you flash? i bricked my phone with rom manager before and will never use it again but i had a backup and was still able to get it to eventually boot into twrp to restore.

so you didnt make a backup before flashing? what recovery did you flash? i bricked my phone with rom manager before and will never use it again but i had a backup and was still able to get it to eventually boot into twrp to restore.

Yeah, I was stupid enough not to backup. The recovery was the stock one. Is that where I went wrong? Should I've had custom recovery installed?

also if you never turned on usb debugging i dont think you can get a computer to see it unless its fully booted.

I turned usb-debugging was on before phone got bricked. I think the phone should be found somehow on computer. For example this fix (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48765620#post48765620) needs Linux to recognize the phone, but I can't even do that. I guess the problem here is that my phone won't enter the download mode. I'm going to try with couple of different computers when I get back home from my holidays.
I also found another fix to try. I have to drain the battery and after a little re-charge I should be able to enter the download mode. I'm trying this next.
yes thats where you made your mistake. that also makes me think download mode wont work period, but im not positive. im surprised rom manager even tried to flash anything without a recovery. thats why i dont use apps like that anymore because you wouldnt of been able to **** it up that bad on your own. so you said you tried the key combo to take you to the factory restore? if you didnt flash a recovery then i would think you could get that to work. did you look into lg's flash tool? maybe that will somehow read it. i remember seeing a post in the general forum about a way to take the phone apart and short the chip out but ive never had to actually read it so i couldnt tell you whats all involved. sorry bout your phone.

Well, I just got myself in the same boat.
The phone will show the LG Logo then the security error and shut down. When plugged in with a USB to the PC it will just reboot.
Nothing is showing in Device Manager either. I done the same in the stock recovery and I tried to Side load CM12 it failed and straight into this loop.
I got nothing now. I just done see how shorting circuits will fix the issue when it's just software. Absolute nightmare as the 12 months warranty has gone.
I tried to do a hard reset and I get the android man saying its working then it shuts down and starts the error again. I'm unable to get in the Download Mode either and I'm stuck
I don't know what to do now. The flash and Support tool will not recognize the phone.
jfletch86, I tried LG Flash Tool, but the problem is that it just says no devices found. Same problem with fix I linked, I can't do anything to my phone if my laptop doesn't find it. I'm beginnig to loose hope

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that you are in the same boat. Symptoms are the same. It seems that we have bricked our phones pretty badly. Hopefully someone comes up with fix that works. Problem is that anyone wise enough to fix this isn't stupid enough to end up this stage.
I'm hoping the same too. I just don't know why it wont allow me to do anything.
I have a nexus 4 and I've never had a problem.
I am getting nothing when plugged into my PC and its like the phone is turning on and off in the boot loop and the lg symbol.
I get the hard reset menu but the computer still doesn't recognise.
I just feel sick at the moment !!

Bootloop "Google"

Good morning everyone
I come here for I'm desperate.
I was using my Nexus 6P and it restarted and then went into bootloop in "Google" already tried to restore several times with the "Nexus Root Toolkit" but without success.
I do not know what to do I'm already terrified even though I do not have a warranty because I bought out of my country
Could someone please help me?
Sorry for the bad english if someone can help me I'm very grateful, because I do not know what to do and I do not understand much about it
Honestly if the phone went into a boot loop completely on its own and you weren't flashing anything it's probably the boot loop of death and there's nothing you can do. If you can get to the bootloader using the volume and power keys you can try flashing a full factory image--but that's only if you enabled OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging in the developers menu before the phone bootlooped. There are threads in XDA dedicated to the boot loop of death plus lots of posts like yours. It's a known problem that there is no solution to.

I think your phone is now an expensive paperweight. I've read lots of ideas people have come up with for getting out of the type of boot loop you are now in but I don't remember ever reading one that actually worked. Maybe someone can help you and I'm wrong but I seriously doubt it. Good luck.

As @jhs39 already told you, your phone is likely dead. If you have access to recovery, try sideloading the latest OTA from Google site. But if you only have bootloader access and flashing stock firmware doesn't fix your issue, it's dead...
Good luck...

If your issue is similar and you only have bootloader access, it's dead...

I am on the same boat with my Nexus 6P bootlooping. The Nexus 6P went into bootloop during 7.1.2 update. The phone was bought from a Canadian carrier and was out of warranty by a few weeks. Both Huawei and Google refused to help and while courteous gave a lot of run around. Disappointed and helpless that a otherwise perfectly working and excellent device was turned into a expensive paper-weight and the vendors would not take responsibility
I was able to solve the problem on my device
1- I access bootloader on my device
2 - In the Nexus Toolkit I went to Advanced Utilities, fastboot format and fastboot erase.
3 - Back to start page I left it marked "Soft-Blicked / BOOTLOOP" and I used NUF26N http://prntscr.com/euczlb
4 - After completing the process the Nexus was in bootloop for 5 minutes and started normally.
I do not know if it was a divine miracle or if it was something that I did,

Hey... Just Hoping you took the time to backup everything important on your phone...
You only have access to bootloader yet? If yes, check this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/boot-loop-death-nexus-6p-t3533528
I would call Google or Huawei and try getting your device repaired/replaced. Some people have had their device replaced even being out of warranty.
Good luck..!

Sorry I translate simple what I think to English.
U erase the boot.img?
After u flash a rom without error or it shutdown without a boot.img (kernel)?
No kernel no charging!
Maybe edl mode.

Okay, I see! Well, that's not how you do it. I have been flashing roms for a while now and often end up in a bootloop, in that case all I do is hold the power button until the device turns off, and before it turns on I quickly press and hold the volume up, to get in to the recovery. And it works every single time. See, pressing and holding the power button will restart the device nomatter what. So next time when you encounter a bootloop, just press and hold power+vol up until it restarts.
And about the "not charging" issue, it often seems to be not charging, but if you keep it plugged in for a while, it comes back to life.

I've once faced such situation with my old Titan. Bootlogo used to flash and automatic reboot. What I did was, whenever the phone turned off I pressed volume up and power button and it booted into fastboot. Then I flashed stock ROM via fastboot. But that's not the case here..

hey, got a question tho. --- bootloops means - it will stuck on bootlogo? OR droid will turn off> THEN on> THEN go for bootlogo (and do this continiously?)

IN MY CASE --- its usually turned off > pressing 4-5 second for turn on AND when its on, tried button combination for recovery but no results... IT TURNS OFF anyway
