can't seem to overwrite stock recovery with twrp? - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i keep trying to install various images of twrp (3022, 21, 3001) and none of them ever appear on the phone. all i get is what's seemingly the stock recovery with the starry top half and oneplus logo at the top. any solution to this? bootloader is unlocked and usb debugging is enabled in oxygen 2.2.1

nvm fixed it by flashing the very first version of twrp that was listed on the site

You just have to make sure to reboot directly to recovery/twrp after the flash... The new recovery will not stay if you reboot to system or bootloader after the flash.

Cannot Enter Recovery (CWM)

Hi,
I unlocked my bootloader today and I just flashed the latest CWM Recovery via Fastboot.
However, when I try to enter Android Recovery I get the Android with the white triangle and exclamation point.
I saw a similar thread but did not see a resolution. Do I need to flash the Gingerbread boot.img via Fastboot?
Also, I read you have to delete a file somewhere or else the default recovery restores itself every reboot? I did not delete any such file, and when I unlocked my bootloader, it obviously wiped my data.
Any ideas how I can get into recovery and flash me a dang ROM?

Flashing CWM Recovery via Fastboot -
1.Download the latest CWM recovery from Downloads section (recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-olympus.img)
2.Power off phone
3.Put phone into fastboot (Power + Vol Down Button)
4.Press Volume Up button to select Fastboot
5.Connect phone via USB cable
6.Open Command Prompt from your fastboot directory
7.Type fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-olympus.img
8.Type "fastboot reboot"
9.Your phone will reboot normally
Also, how screwed would I be if I don't backup my PDS? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138220

Both are relatively similar. I would have to take the side of TWRP at least on the N7. Last time i tried to flash something with CWM it didnt wipe correctly or flashed incorrectly and ended up with a courrpt ROM. Had to redownload and reflash with TWRP and it was fine. Dont know what it is with CWM on this device but on my Gnex it was just fine. As of right now i would stick to TWRP. It also doesnt do the whole blob deal for nandroids which IMO isnt quite ready and causes issues. At least in my experience.

Yep!
I just did it as I had a problem with CWM, in goomanager you just go settings and choose "install open recovery" when it has downloaded you then select "reboot recovery" and that's it.
I think I like it better than CWM already, I like being able to name my backups as I do them, very handy.

I have always used CWM on my phone for no reason other than that was what came w/ the kernal or rom pick of the day. Using the Nexus 7 Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195 I installed CWM, or tried to, ended up going to the play store for touch.
I have tried holding the power key, powerkey + vol, power++ or - vol and can not get into CWM to no avail. Yes it was connected to USB. I have to use Rom Manager to get to it. Just thinking if something/everything locks up there should another way to get to recovery.
Can I have both Twerp and CWM at the same time?
No. One recovery at a time.
But if you have root access all you need to do is get the terminal emulator from the market type :
Su(enter, grant root)
Reboot recovery
Or if you have adb on your computer (which you really should of you're going to be flashing anything) Just make sure you have. Usb debugging on and type: adb reboot recovery.
Btw the button combo is all three buttons(both volumes and the power button to boot into the bootloader the use the volume keys to toggle the option to recovery mode and hit the power button to confirm.

+1 for Quick Boot
With the N7 running, I have found that if I hold the power button down with or without combos for 15-20 sec. it'll reboot, not just shut down. And yes, when starting with the power & -vol it starts in fastboot. I guess I assumed that it would behave just like my sg4g....live and learn .
I'm using ROM Manager to get to TWRP. Haven't decided which I like best twrp or cwm.
My thanks for putting up w/my noobie questions!

Apps such as that are useful enough I spose.

[Q] how to restore stock recovery and unlock bootloader?

Well, I was using the Unified Android Toolkit (SkipSoft) to restore the system before selling it.
It looks like it flashed everything correctly, I did the following:
1) Unroot
2) flash stock recovery
3) lock bootloader.
I confirmed that the bootloader is unlocked, and root no longer works.
However, when I try to boot to recovery I get the android with an '!' sticking out of his chest. Any ideas??

That is stock recovery. You have to hit Volume Up (or Volume Down?) + Power at the same time to bring up the recovery menu.

Right, I thin it confirms I have the stock recovery. I got to it by gettng into fastboot then selecting boot recovery. As far as I know that's the only way to do it.
So, why does it boot to recovery in error and how do I fix it?
I did just try downloading the stock images from google and flashed them all (I needed to unlock bootloader first).
Everything flashed. Still couldn't boot to recovery.
locked bootloader again, still couldn't boot to recovery.
What gives??
Can't recall what stock recovery looks like but I believe you have it, as in the ! You see is the stock recovery just as charesa39 has said

It's not an error. That's the way it was intended to work. It was the same on my Nexus 5 and 7 (2013) before installing a custom recovery. I have no idea why it was designed like that. Maybe some safety feature, as in, adding a necessary button combination (Power + Volume Button) so someone doesn't accidentally wipe his or her device? IDK. All I know is, your recovery seems to be normal.
You are correct in that the only way to get to recovery is through fastboot, unless you have enabled the advanced power menu in developer options, or use a ROM or Xposed Module (like myself) that allows you to reboot into recovery.

How to flash TWRP and Root Moto X Style on Marshmallow

I am using moto x style and unlocked bootloader with 'Windroid Universal Android Toolkit' v2.5 but cannot flash TWRP and root this apl. Today I tried flash TWRP and then root but after showing 'Congratulation' pop up,my phone stucked on 'No command' page. I tried twice and same result. Later i check there is either no TWRP or root by SuperSU. And i see youtube video and and read many XDA forum and comments and most of the users says the phone stuck on M logo page when reboot after the root process. And all says its a issue with Marshmallow. And most of the xda posts and youtube video are made during 5.1.1 so there is no problem in that video during flash TWRP and root. So i need a seamless process to flash TWRP and root on Marshmallow so that it doesnot stuck on M logo. And I dont want to downgrade to L for root. And unluckily if it stuck M logo thwn what to do to go back to home screen?Thank you.

Step 1 - Stop using toolkits! They rarely work right on modern Android devices. With the Moto the only safe, reliable way to root is manually.
I don't know what the 'old way' is to flash TWRP your referring to here... I recommend one time booting twrp with "fastboot boot twrp.img" command (replace twrp.img with your actual twrp image file) then perform a backup to the SD card or USB OTG device and put it away for safe keeping. Then flash twrp either with twrp you have booted, or manually with "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img"
The rooting method I linked before is valid for all Marshmallow builds, if you have Lollipop or Nougat you need to find a different method.

On your device, go into Settings -> About and find the Build Number and tap on it 7 times to enable developer settings. Press back and go into Developer Options and enable USB debugging. From your computer, open a command prompt and type:
adb reboot bootloader
You should now be in fastboot mode.
Download the correct image file and copy the file into the same folder as your adb and fastboot binaries. Rename the image to twrp.img and type:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot reboot
Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install.
I am saying about this official method which is on twrp.me site. And after typing 'fastboot reboot' what I have to do to go home page? Sorry to ask u so many things. Actually I am totally new in this thing and very much worry after facing issues 2-3 times. And thank u very much for fast reply.
One more ques, I have unlocked bootloader with that "Windroid Universal Android Toolkit". Now in fastboot it shows 'bootloader unlocked, code 3' is that ok? As u say toolkit doesnot work on modern devices.

So Moto is a tad different... After you flash recovery, do not reboot with fastboot, instead use the Vol Dn key select Recovery and press Power to start it. When the splash screen comes up, allow changes to system, then I the TWRP main menu select Reboot - Recovery, the device will start TWRP again and it should be "locked" in. From there perform the rooting.

You don't need to root if your going CM, flash TWRP, backup, and flash CM. You don't need to over complicate it.
If you boot (not flash) TWRP and backup then get a copy to safe place there is little risk of anything going wrong.

There is always a chance of something going wrong, no one can guarantee everything will be fine. We have had people do everything perfectly but something happens and it's bricked... It's rare but does happen.
After you flash TWRP in the bootloader, press Vol Dn until it says Recovery and press power to start it, after several seconds you will get a screen that will ask if it can write to system, select yes, the next screen will be the TWRP home screen.
Once you flash TWRP, your stock recovery is gone, but you access it the same way... Power off, press and hold PWR+Vol Dn and in the bootloader menu select Recovery and press power.

Your last two are redundant, either flash or boot, you don't have to do both, but each has a purpose... Flash is permanent, boot is transient and will disappear on a reboot.
Boot TWRP first, the first time it will not take you to the main page initially but show you a notification page asking if you want allow it to make changes to the system or keep it read-only, this time only do not allow changes... Then the main screen of TWRP will be displayed and you should do a full backup of all partitions to the SD card.
Flash will just write the recovery partition, it doesn't start anything, you select recovery from the fastboot menu to start it.

So after "fastboot boot twrp.img" i have to allow to make changes and have to do a nandroid backup. After that will I get option to "Reboot?"
And later when I went to recovery I will get twrp page instead of stock recovery? 1st I think I should flash cm13 then root then upgrade to 14.1 bcz still a feel little worry to root it on stock rom.

And later when I went to recovery I will get twrp page instead of stock recovery? 1st I think I should flash cm13 then root then upgrade to 14.1 bcz still a feel little worry to root it on stock rom.

No, almost every part of what your saying is wrong...
Boot twrp and do not allow changes first time and backup. This will give a clean backup to restore from if things go badly.
After this is complete, in TWRP go to Reboot menu and select Bootloader, flash TWRP, do not reboot but use the bootloader menu to start TWRP. This time allow it to make changes to system. At the main menu if twrp go to Reboot - Recovery the device will restart and TWRP will load automatically, this step will lock in twrp so the stock OS doesn't replace it.
You only need to root stock rom, you don't need to root CM roms as they are already rooted (there are a few roms that are not pre-rooted but they are rare and none of the ones your talking about). As far as CM 13 vs 14.1 I can't really help you but from I've read both are stable enough for a daily driver device.

I made a mistake by flashing the SuperSU zip without booting into the system first. Can you tell me how to boot into recovery with the hardware buttons ?
Turn off your device then hold down power off + volume down button when you see lg logo release the power button for a second while keeping the volume down button pressed then press and hold down power button again with the volume down pressed. Your phone should boot up into factory reset menu click yes to factory reset. Don't worry click yes to factory reset. It will boot into twrp.
NOTE:- It will only work if you have latest twrp build installed, won't work, if you have first build installed.

If you still have the first build, you can still enter the recovery by adb with "adb reboot recovery" while the factory reset scrip of the twrp runs. It won't be immediate, you'll probably lose your data but it will work

You need to use at least SuperSU 2.79, previous versions won't boot and will get stuck al LG logo.:good:
[Happened to me >.<' ]
The problem is I can't start my phone at all. Can't get adb because I can't boot up the system. When I go to recovery TWRP just does something and reboots to the system where it gets stuck again.

You can ask him how did it.

That "something" that twrp does is probably the factory reset scrip, so you have to keep the phone plug and adb running so while it's doing "that something" use "adb reboot recovery" command

Just tried that and still no success, adb doesn't even register the device while the script is running.

Only option left is Download Mode and flash .kdz again.
Take out batery, plug the phone and put the battery on while pressing vol+
By the way, which SuperSu version did you use?

I really don't know what happened then. I flashed SuperSU and MM altogether several times (Trying to fix another problem) and I never had a problem.
But well, as long as you have Download Mode you can always start from scratch

LG Flash Tool 2014
Remember, without battery plug it to the computer, press Vol+ and then put the battery. It'll show you a message telling you to keep de Vol+ until the "Download Mode" screen appears
Goodluck!:good:
Ok so I got everything back to normal thanks to you guys. But I have a question. I found that there are 2 aboot.bin files in the system. One is in dev/block/bootdevice and one is in dev/block/platform. So do I run the command twice for both or do I do just one ?

These are the same. Just do
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/aboot_v10f.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
assuming aboot_v10f.bin (the patched aboot) is on the root of internal storage.
Thank you very much to everyone that helped. Everything worked perfectly. Had some problems with the official TWRP app so I used Flashify to flash the recovery. For now I am going to use the v10f rom until there is a custom one ( hope we get LineageOS soon ).
Add [SOLVED ]the post title too!
Glad we were useful!
