How to pass Safetynet test? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a problem with apps that need safetynet passed to get it working. Such as Snapchat or Pokemon GO. Second one actually does work sometimes, but the first one is giving me massive headache. I'm asking how to pass this test on roms based on LineageOS. I have tried to unroot it with no luck. Unrooting and systemless root also doesn't work. I've heard somewhere that locking bootloader could be a possible solution to that. But, how to lock it?
N910F + 7.1.1

As far as I know, Snapchat only has a problem with Xposed. Unable to comment on pokemon, never used it.
I installed and logged in to snapchat on a phone without Xposed, then used TB and copied the files to my phone with Xposed.
Everything works as it should. If that's not possible then uninstall Xposed first and reinstall it after you have snapchat.

I do not have Xposed. The trick with TB doesn't work for me anymore. I've tried to do backup on Touchwiz and CM 13 and then restore them on Lineage 14.1. No one worked, Snapchat tells to log in first. it is the only app I need to use, but I'm in love with Lineage.

Kind of. We are not able to log in into Snapchat on Lineage OS 14 yet. However, I've discovered a possible way to use the app,. This method has been working for me for last couple of days.
Every single time you want to install Lineage and use Snapchat you have to install Touchwiz based firmware that you can log in into the app on, simply log in, root the device, install Titanium Backup and make a backup of Snapchat. Copy the backup on the sd card. Then install Lineage OS, Snapchat, Titanium Backup, try to log in into Snapchat. I know it will say it can't connect to the server. Now restore backup of Snapchat via Tïtanium Backup - data only. Enjoy working Snapchat.
From what I've seen Snapchat makes little updates of user stats every 24h. Because you can't use backup older than 24hours otherwise it will not work. I am not sure about the exact time it's collecting stats. But a fresh backup works every time. It is very important to do a fresh backup and do a one try to log in into Snapchat.
I do not use Android Pay or Pokemon anymore.

It depends on whether you want to stick with Touchwiz or flash LineageOS. Every stock firmware let you log in to Snapchat without installing or flashing anything. Snapchat works on phone straight out of box.
Guide for snapdragon touchwiz
As I mentioned earlier, Snapchat works on every stock firmware. You do not need anything else. Just install Snapchat and log in, simple as that. Now, if you want to flash a custom TOUCHWIZ based rom it shouldn't be a problem to log in to the app. Even though it's custom rom, you're still able to log in. You do not need any backups at all.
Guide for snapdragon LineageOS
LineageOS is not a touchwiz based rom. Snapchat will never work on it until it gets official and be signed. If you want to install one of the builds and have Snapchat working you need to fo following steps:
1. Your phone needs to have a stock firmware (that is the one that comes out of the box, but also the ones you flash with odin)
2. Log in to Snapchat
3. Root your phone (for example using CF-Auto Root), you do not need recovery twrp to root your phone.
4. Turn your phone on
5. Install Titanium Backup, open it, do a backup of Snapchat
6. Open "My Files" that's stock file manager for Samsung's phones, go to your phone's storage search for Titanium Backup folder, open it and you'll see three files.
7. Copy all of them to your sd card.
8. Install custom recovery (like twrp), flash LineageOS, gapps
9. Log in to your Google account, download Snapchat, try to log in (I know it's going to fail, but it's important)
10. Go to LineageOS -> About phone -> Click a few times on Build number until it say you unlocked developer options
11. Go back to main settings menu, scroll down to the bottom, you'll see now Developer options, click on it
12. Search for "Root Access", click on it and select Apps and ADB
13. Install Titanium Backup, open it and close.
14. Open "Files" app, that's stock LineageOS file manager
15. Go to your sd card, select the files you backup (three files) and copy them to phone's storage -> Titanium Backup folder
16. Open Titanium Backup again, click on Snapchat -> restore -> data only.
17. Now you can open Snapchat and enjoy it.
Hope that help you

ok thanks bro, I have one more question, what is lineageOS all about, is it new or something? how come I would choose lineageOS over say touchwiz. what is the major differences? is it like CM roms vs normal roms, quicker, less bloatware, better battery life etc? or am I wrong about CM roms vs normal roms? tbh I don't even know the difference between auroa/cm/touchwiz.
do you have a short explanation of lineageOS for me? because from what I can tell, I should be definitely going lineageOS as it's more supported right now. I used to use omega rom on my old note 4 but support left, and I liked that rom except for random reboots and slightly poor battery life that I can kind of remember.
I'm so sorry man for asking stupid questions. I love customing my note 4 but I don't know exactly what I'm doing haha. I just know I love the extra features that aren't on stock, xposed being a major.
thank you man!

LineageOS is a continuation of CM, since CM stopped being developed and die. It's just CM with new name. LineageOS 14.1 is based on Android 7.1.1, which is the latest you can get right now. The major differences are speed, no bloatware, battery life is the same as stock touchwiz rom. The most important one is speed, I've never seen anything that fast as this is. The builds these days can be daily drivers since our developers fixed 95% of bugs. I can recommend you builds by @ripee he got links to them in the signature(triltexx), download pico google gapps and you're good to go.
The difference between auroa/cm/touchwiz. Correct way to list them is port roms/lineageOS/note 4 roms based on stock firmware. Port roms are ones that people port from other device such as S7, Note 5. It's still touchwiz right, but it's a port. That means it's made to work on our Note 4's. These days ports like Aurora / Norma are pretty much fully working apart from things like fingerprint scanner. LineageOS(old name - CM) - just read above. Note 4 roms based on stock firmware - that means developers use stock Note 4 firmware and they edit it. An example of that kind of rom is rom by ALEXNDR. It's a rock solid rom. Stock firmware, options to install with/without root or xposed and debloated. it is fully working because it's made on stock firmware for our devices.
I think you're be very happy with ripee builds of LineageOS, he makes them every day and uploads. Not a single random reboot or freeze, battery life 4-5 hours of SOT.
If you got any further questions, just ask. I'd love to answer you the best I can.

quality help mate, I really appreciate it. I'll go with lineageOS and go through the snapchat process on it (already worried I'm gonna screw up lol) but I'll give it a go.
one thing I've always hated was updates, I'd always had to fresh install, losing my calendar setup and over phone layout setup, settings, everything. I always wanted to dirty flash on an update but people said don't, what are your thoughts on ripees build?
so I'm gonna go through the process and do it over the next week, I got a lot on so can't transfer over from my lg v20 to note 4. I got the wrong damn lg v20 which has no roms or support lol...
I'm looking at emotionOS, what are your thoughts on it? I kind of want the extra features that a basic CM won't have. what you reckon?

I've rooted, installed flashify to flash twrp but it doesn't install it properly. I restart my phone and it goes automatically to download screen and says at the top in red phone could not boot normally. when in download mode I can't even vol up home power to get to twrp, nothing happens. any ideas why? so I'm stuck on download mode. I can get out if I install twrp on odin but then again when I try to get into recovery it instead goes to download mode and says phone could not boot normally.
I haven't got to flash the rom yet because I can't get twrp installed properly.
you know why? thanks man

I am going it write it here if anyone is interested.
From what I've heard and read, you can't get Pokemon Go to work on LineageOS now. I've tested it and it's true. We have to wait till LineageOS get official. It will be signed, unrooted and every app that is based on Safetynet test would probably work just fine.
Snapchat works only if you have a backup of it.

I think it is possible and should work. You can also use Package Disabler. You can debloat your phone using it, it doesn't require root.

I've gotten around the xposed snapchat thing by using the SudoHide app and hiding the xposed installer and supersu.
Rooted Note 4 with xposed on 6.0.1

First off, I am no expert at all on this matter. But maybe a different kernel, if ones even available. I haven't had the time to even test lineage out yet, so I'm not familiar as to whether their kernel is permissive or enforcing? But that possible might have something to do with it.
Maybe someone with more details can answer that for us?
Edit: wow, bro. My xda was all fudge up. It was not showing any of these replies that are here. I hope you got that solved. I thought that was a new post, as it showed 0 replies. Didn't mean to reply to old, answered question.

The problem is not Root. It works fine with root.
When you go to log into Snapchat, it checks to see if xposed is installed. If it is, it will say there is a problem and will not log you in. You should check your rom to see if it is installed (the files may be there but the app may not).
If i was you, i would clear the snapchat data and then uninstall it. Then, download the "uninstall zip" for xposed. You may say it is not installed, however, elements may still be there. running this in recovery will remove all files. When that has been flashed, you can then install snapchat. Once logged into snapchat, you can then return to recovery and install xposed if you want.
I am currently running snapchat with root and exposed. It will work.

Okay. But snapchat does not have issues with root. What custom Rom are you running if any? Just asking as stopping root will disable xposed, therefore allow the use of snapchat.

Yes snapchat work with root because i have made the login
I use Sac's rom note 7 the version 8
Is root problem too first was xposed now not work even with root so dont say is not root problem if u dont have facts, you can prove by urself i have flashed new rom i was unable to login , no xposed in rom only deodexed and rooted. so unrooted from supersu and login was sucessful
Hi guys I am having the very same issue. I initially rooted my s7 edge and snapchat was working until recently after accidentally logging out. I now can't login to snapchat!
I do not have xposed installed on my phone so it can't be completely because of root.
How do I unroot my phone? and will this mean I need to create a backup of my phone?
Thanks!

I just installed Renovate Edge 3.3 and snapchat doesn't work. Any solutions?
I don't have xposed, and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

I'm the one who asked the question 2 posts below yours. I have managed to install Snapchat finally after a whole day or searching.
So... yes you have to unroot and reinstall the stock firmware. This will wipe everything off your phone, so yes you have to back your phone up.
After you unroot, you have to log into Snapchat, backup Snapchat up with Titanium, root and install your custom rom and then restore Snapchat with Titanium.
It worked for me. Now I have Renovate Edge 3.3 ROM and the latest update of Snapchat.
As for unrooting, see this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69426561&postcount=5
Note: Unrooting doesn't fix Knox trip (warranty stays void)
How do you backup using titanium when you have no root

Thanks for that. I never installed a custom rom although i really would like to. I'm new to the roit world and customisation rom wise so need to do some research on it. At the moment I'm using my s5 as a play toy for customisation.
Regarding the SC i just fully unrooted my s5 then logged in to SC. After doing so i created a back up using Titanium back up. Then transfered data across to my s7 edge and restored data which allowed me to log in. I could have just unrooted my s7 edge, then logged in and then re-root but as a noob didn't want to risk any data loss from s7 edge.
What would you suggest as a good custom rom for the s7 edge? I'm using stock rom and don't currently have twrp installed (I'm still new on twrp front and benefits of it too).

Ignore the instructions about unrooting and reflashing stock firmware..
All you have to do is uninstall Snapchat, uninstall Xposed. Reboot phone. Install snapchat and login, go into Titanium Backup and backup the "app data."
Then install Xposed, reboot, restore the data of Snapchat via Titanium Backup and your set. I used to run into this issue all the time when rooted and using Xposed
I have unrooted my s7 edge and flashed stock rom and the problem is solved in my device.

Thanks!

No problem. I thought you had installed a custom rom. Since you hadn't, unrooting would do the trick. In my case, it didn't work. I had to go back to stock firmware and then use Titanium.
As for a good custom rom, I've only tried Renovate Edge. It's pretty awesome. I did some research and compared popular roms and found out it's one of the 1st built roms for S7 edge and is still considered one of the best.

Yeah, that would normally do the trick.
Best custom rom for samsung galaxy s5 is newly introduced Cynogenmod 14.1 .

Wrong forum, this is S7 edge forum
Sorry for that!
Please my snapchat is not working on my samsung 6 edge plus, my phone is not rooted and I don't have xposed. Can't log in! So annoying

Thinking it's time to upgrade to Nougat but...

So, with the realization that Xposed, etc. are likely dying a slow death I'm coming to the realization more and more that it's time to just get used to using a phone without that stuff and go ahead an upgrade to Nougat. I've been holding off because of the lack of xposed.
My question is...is there anything out there (on the Play Store or downloadable APKs) that will do the same things as these modules and is a legit app and not some junk?
1) Greenify (I know this will work without xposed but some features won't work - is there anything better?)
2) XInsta (download Instagram photos and videos)
3) SnapPrefs (I primarily only use this for typing more text in Snapchat and sharing 20 second videos which are longer than stock, I don't need the other features)
Anyone know of anything that I can download to replace those?
Also, as far as rooting 7.1.1 it's just a matter of applying the latest SuperSU I already am using (I updated my N6P regularly) after flashing the 7.1.1 stock images?
Any pointers will be appreciated.

Hi... I can't answer all your questions, only 2...
About greenify. I used to have it on my N6 running marshmallow. When I upgraded to the N6P, I thought I'd try without, just to see how battery performs. With stock 7.1.1 or PureNexus, the battery drain is negligible. Also, you can install a custom kernels and use custom profiles which tends to help with battery consumption (this is more for screen on usage though).
If you still want to save more juice... There's Franco's naptimes app that forces doze as soon as the screen goes off. I don't use it, so you may try to find more infos by yourself.
I don't use Xinsta, nor SnapPrefs, so i'll pass on this.
For root, flash your stock firmware, flash TWRP with fastboot, reboot to TWRP, then flash SU of your choice. Latest SuperSU is SuperSU 2.79 SR3. Don't reboot to system before the SU install or TWRP will be overwritten by stock recovery and you'll have to reflash it, etc... Starting with 7.x firmware it has to be done this way...
Good luck...

Yeah, I used Elemental right now on my N6P with 6.0.1. So I'm already tweaking that, and I did read about Naptimes just like 5 minutes ago as I was doing further research. Can also run Greenify in basic mode to get some of those benefits back as it doesn't require Xposed for all features.
Really curious about the other two, if anyone knows of any other apps.
Thanks again!

Hey... I don't see any issue as far as I remember that could prevent from using greenify. I don't know how much apps you have installed that could stay running in the background. Doze has been pretty well improved on 7.x compared to marshmallow. Give it a try, you can still install it afterward.
Good luck...
OGinstagram+ can download pictures and videos, it's here on XDA. It's not updated regularly (doesn't get bumped up for each little play store update to Instagram) but it works just fine. No idea about anything for Snapchat or greenify.
On newer versions of Snapchat you can type unlimited captions without Snapprefs. Videos are still stuck at 10 seconds, though.

Snapchat on rooted LG V20

I am trying to login to Snapchat but it keeps saying there's an error with the login and I found out it is because I am rooted. A fix I found involves full unroot and I don't want to do that. Can anyone help me?
Snapchat
Ive used snapchat rooted. On mutiple roms.
Snapchat for some devices (like the v20 now) is checking for root. It's hit or miss really. On my VS995 Snapchat wouldn't work till I did suhide. So you'll have to most likely use Magisk or SU-Hide or some kind of root hiding thing to get past it.
Just install Snapchat on a other device, log in, make a backup with Titanium Backup and load it on your main device.
This worked for my rooted S5 KLTE

magisk hide is option 1
rootswitch is option 2
full unroot, sign in, then re-flash the supersu zip to re root is option 3
restore a app+data backup from a logged in device using backup app like titanium is option 4..

Personally i feel option 2 is easiest but not all kernels like it.
I wish these things could be put in to roms so when we flash them, there's no alternate flashing needed that could cause issues.. I had nothing but issues tryna get both of those options to work, but again it was probably kernel related so I just gave up on it..

Actually, the Stock deOdexed US996 ROM has them built into it, also allows for hotspot provisioning without having to edit anything. I've been running it for a few months now, and been flawless on every aspect, other than it disables the ability to use MyVerizon apps, and Verizon's visual voicemail.

Rooting Galaxy s7 edge (SM-G935F) nougat causes black camera with crash.

Hi!
I rooted my galaxy s7 edge that had stock version of android 7 (nougat) on it using this tutorial: http://www.droidviews.com/install-twrp-root-galaxy-s7-and-s7-edge-on-nougat-g935fxxu1dplt/. Now when I open built-in camera app it shows me a black screen for few seconds and then it says "Camera has stopped" and it offers me to "Open app again" and "send feedback" And it keeps happening over and over again.
Lemma: The reason is rooting.
Proof: Camera app worked perfectly. After I rooted my phone it started to crash like I described above. Then I tried to force quit camera app and delete it's cache/data. It did not help. After that I wiped entire cache partition. Still no help. After that I wiped all partitions except system. That did not work either. Then I re-flashed unmodified original stock ROM. Then camera worked perfectly again. Then again I rooted my phone the using tutorial I linked above. And again exactly the same issue. Camera app show black screen for few seconds and then crashes with exact same error message. ∎
Does anyone know fix for that? And why it happens? Is it some kind of samsung's anti-root thing that prevent camera fromworking on rooted phones or what?
Update [SOLUTION]:
In case someone else has same problem.
My solution was to skip restarts in TWRP steps. No restart between format and installing packages. Restart once when everything in TWRP part is done.

But then how do you explain that before rooting camera worked and after rooting it didnt work?
And how do you explain that after I flashed original rom back, camera started working again?
And finally, how do you explain that after rooting 2nd time the camera again started to show black screen and crash?
I have done nothing else than rooting. I have not added any custom mods or anything. For me it starts working again every time I flash original stock rom and shows that black screen and gives error every time I root it.
I downloaded original firmware from here: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G935F/ (I chose baltic (only 1 occurrence in the table))
Maybe that specific tutorial I linked is bad one? Could anyone check that?
Rooted my G935F and no problems here for me.
I suggest you follow the tutorial here on xda and try again.
Could you post link to tutorial please? Then I could be sure I used the same tutorial as you did.
PS! Now I also noticed that with rooting I lost auto brightness adjusting and also manually changing brightness didnt do anything. Right now I am back on un-rooted rom because I need camera functionality to work. But would love to get it rooted. Is there any info on cf-auto-root and android 7 yet?

A simple search here you'll find all you need. You are the only person I've ever read of that had camera problems like you've stated after Root. Again rooting won't break your camera.
I've Odin to stock literally hundreds of times testing Rom/Mods/themes as a tester for several teams from my s3 up to and including my G935F.
I've also flashed every Rom available for the G935F and the only ones with camera problems are the Lineage or AOSP Roms which more than likely are kernel related. Start here https://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
Then this

Also, posting some specific link rather than general starting point would help to guarantee that I use right tutorial for rooting. From these links you posted I didnt find any specific tutorial. I did search and dig these links, but I didnt find any specific tutorials. All I found was some tools and some roms. But cf-auto-root works for android 6 but I have 7 on my phone so I cant use that and I did not find any rooting tutorials on this forums.

Ok here is what you need to do.
Download a logcat app and get a logcat of it forceclosing.
I can't magically look in your device and see what, if anything is wrong.
As far as you saying you've searched well if you really did you would've found several tutorials.
How do I know?? Because I've used them myself.
It took me less than 5 minutes to root my new G935F using the TWRP Guide here on XDA
You seem to be the only one in hundreds that's claiming root broke your camera.
Provide a logcat in the Q&A and maybe a dev can help you.

Same issue on smg935w8 lost camera and screen brightness. Also can't mount micro sd... we're you able to fix? I thought it was a bad root then I re flashed and the issue came back...twrp 3.1.0 supersu 2.79 and no verity 5.1
---------- Post added at 10:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 PM ----------
im re flashing stock and tomorrow ill redo twrp and super su and skip dm verity patch think that might be the issue as it worked before for me last week and i then messed up by turning dev mode off and disabling oem and when i reflashed after that i have been flashing the dm verity patch....
give that a try if your still having issues

Thanks I've tried clearing cache for everything no luck. I originally thought it was because I might have deleted a system app with titanium but when I reflashed it all (firmware, tarp, supersu,no small verity disable 5.1) I still had the issue.
Lastnight I wiped and flashed the entire firmware. Everything works. Tonight I'm goi g to try and only flash twrp then supersu as I only want root. Hopefully that fixes my issues.
OP have your issues been resolved?
I'll let you know once I get it working on mine and we'll get you sorted out. I believe it's something with the steps or order as I had root fine for a day then had to reflash due to messing around and didn't do it my original way and that caused my issues.
flashed twrp 3.1.0 from odin with auto reboot off.
then booted to twrp. swiped right to mount system,
wipe data(format data) type yes.
mount microsd as mtp copy supersu 2.79 over if its not already on you microsd card.
else just install it from zip
cleared cache/delvik
rebooted to system
log in and setup everything and restore
camera and auto brightness...stilll doesnt work.
ok so after multiple tries to fix this (flash stock) everything works,, root and it breaks tried clearing all cache in system and twrp no difference... then i loaded phone info and used the secret codes to find out that my camera firmware is not installed....so im trying Flashfire to reflash the AP only while injecting supersu and maintaining root.... it is just booting up.....and OMG!!!!it works!!!!
so....for some reason...firmware was corrupting..... no clue why tired multiple methods and nothing... and im not a noob either.....
what finallllllllly worked was.... flash your rom and get root how you would normally. camera/auto brightness/and mounting usb doesnt work....boot to twrp. get your ap md5 file on your internal storage
reboot to system,. get flashfire from playstore or chainfires website
install and then click the + select firmware and select the tar file
only install system....uncheck boot and cp
then in the everroot select injject supersu, preserve recovery
and flash.... it will start flshing and boot to syteem once done..
everything is working nice
finalllyyyy!!!!
hope this can atleast help OP
no clue why i was losing firmware on the flashes
@unit68 Tnx for sharing. This time I got camera and brightness adjustment work out of box. But if in any point of time I happen to need your tutorial, I'll give it a try and let you know.
I am not sure if it is by chance or not but what I did differently this time was:
1) I paid attention to step where it asked to disable auto reboot (can anyone explain why?)
Previously I thought it shouldnt matter so I kept auto reboot for convenience.
2) I did format data, install no-verity-opt-encrypt-5.0 and SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815 and wipe dalvik cache with out rebooting between (Anyone know if that matters?).
Previously I had done it: format - reboot - install no enc - wipe dalvik cache- reboot - install super su - wipe dalvik cache - reboot .
Now I did it format - intall no enc - install super su - wipe dalvik cache - reboot.
I'll see for few days if anything else comes up or if camera breaks down again. Btw @unit68 what happens when you try some bloatware remover that run with root access? Do you get rid of bloatware or not? I tried few of them such as no bloat for example. Some complain that uninstall failed some seem to uninstall the app but when they reload app the app is still there and it's also still in app menu. Just curious if you have the same same issue. And is it safe to delete apk file manually? Or would it cause phone to crash/boot loop? When I ran supersu it complained about knox and asked me to disable it but it never managed to (however root checker tells me I am root). Maybe knox is protecting bloatware? Any ideas?
Flash your able too get it working! It was soooo frustrating. So for Knox supersu asks to disable then seems to hang so I go about my business reopen supersu it'll ask again and then is successful.
To remove bloat I normally just go to titanium and remove the ones I don't want
No issues on that and all my apps that require root work fine (titanium, adaway, flashfire)
This time disabling knox worked too... It turned out that all 3 apps that I used were note able to remove bloatware. App you named worked and also ROM toolbox lite works.
Btw when I google bloatware, the lists are incomplete.... Do you happen to know list of apps that must not be uninstalled? I guess white list would be better idea than black list.
Is installing/uninstalling app same as removing/adding apk files? So that I could cut and paste everything expect file manager and launcher to usb memory stick and then start adding required apps back one by one?
ive seen some samsung debloating software around. i honestly just remove stuff based on manually debloating for last fewyears. if i dont know what theapp is for i google it to see if its ok to remove. normally i remove samsung knox, few other samsung apps, some google apps (music, games, videio), briefings some edge panels, live wallpaper, and carrier branding apps(for me rogers) stuff like that. if you are going to i recommend you do a backup first as it ccan mess up your phone if you uninstall an important app. . also once your do uninstall you need to reboot ... the paid version of titanium allows you to freeze applications so you can try that first before removing it.
I had the exact same issues: camera crashing, blue light filter not working, brightness not working, etc. It was supersu. You need the right version of supersu, it's 2.79 SR0. It's checksum is f4ecbf5814215bf569ff3324fc1c91f5

Interesting..ill check that if I need to to Flash. I have 2.79 but maybe I grabbed an old version or a beta. Mine says 20161205 I think it may have been sr3

State of Custom Roms

hey there,
i was using custom roms back in the day with my oppo find 7, so android 7ish. Back than maintaining custom roms was a major pain in .... because, at least for me, i needed to full flash every time there was an update and most roms were kind of buggy as well.
Since my 9t is being annoying lately (EU 12.0.5) with shutting down apps way to often/fast, forgetting logins, making backups everywhere, switching back to light mode, no idea how to do a proper cleanup without deleting half my app settings etc. I was wondering what the state of the custom rom is nowadays.
I was thinking about getting something smaller, but since the pixel 5 is out of sale, the zenfone 8 missing wireless charge and no real alternative and all of them are more than 600 bucks, so i dont want to get a new phone tbh, prices are out of this world imho. Also iam quit pleased with the device itself, i.e. battery, performance, everyday stuff
so basically here is what i want to know:
How are updates handled in Pixelexperience or lineage?
how hard/easy is installation?
is google pay working?
is there a relyable way to make a full backup of my phone to go back to as is now?
did anybody experience the mentioned issues and maybe has a solution?
bonus qquestions
is there any major improvement in upcomming MIUI Versions(12.1, 12.5) and a roadmap of rollout?
what does SOT mean?
thanks in advance
for updates you may have to re flash the newer rom.
2. installation is easy given you know how to do it.
3. google pay is working fine.
4. twrp is the way, but believe me you won't aspire to go back.
5. I am running pixel experience rom on MI A2 device, the device is working great.
*/learn from youtube properly how to flash recovery, install rom for your device */
best of luck
I'm on Xiaomi.eu Stable (did use Weeklies for 6 months) - daily driver / business phone
If you like MIUI, you have A11, MIUI 12.5, debloated, all stable
You only flash ROM from TWRP (of course, first time, when switching to, Format Data is mandatory).
Later they have like OTA mechanism (Updater downloads ROM in zip, reboots to TWRP and upgrades)
not sure if i really like miui or not, thats why i was eyeing pixel/zenfone, i was pretty happy with my Mi A1 before the 9t
wouldnt a twrp backup break my safety net? if i remember correctly i need to unlock/root

For flashing any other ROM you need to unlock Bootloader - and that breaks Safety Net, not TWRP folder or so
However, Xiaomi.eu has built-in patch to pass SafetyNet with no need for Magisk, any Magisk module, anything
I.e., you switch to Xiaomi.eu (with Bootloader unlocked), no need to install Magisk and any of the modules like USNF, MHPC, etc) and you have SafetyNet, Device Certified in Google Play.
Also Widevine L1 and Netflix really plays in FullHD, HDR-10
And if you need Magisk for something else, you just enable MagiskHide and you still have SafetyNet etc.
No troubles here with SafetyNet
how much free space do i need for a twrp backup? most likely half of the internal space i guess.
so basically for every other rom besides xiami.eu i need to worry about safety net with magisk or similar?
I have TWRP Nandroid backup of 15 GB, but most of that is Data.
You don't need the backup for installing/updating the ROM.
That's only for your comfort
But I put it to PC and delete from the phone (if really needed, TWRP can also connect to PC and you can copy it back to phone before restoring)
I never needed to restore
And one more but very important thing
TWRP (backup) has NOTHING with SafetyNet. SafetyNet DOES NOT look do you have TWRP folder, or do you have Magisk app/mngr (I'm not talking about thevMagisk core/service but apk)
Unfortunately, there are too many unknowledgeable people writing that and similar nonsense elswhere
Problem is (and that's the reason why it might look 'similar' from the end user's point of view) that various banking apps, ganes and so, use VARIOUS methods and in some cases even speculative GUESSES trying to find if your device is SAFE for their apps and businesses (whatever that means for somebody), or is your phone 'rooted' (also in the very loose sense)
Those methods and guesses may include:
- Testing SafetyNet (framework provided by Google, partly in Google Play Services and partly on Google servers).
Fornally, when Bootloader is unlocked and/or with custom ROM (not certified with Google) or rooted (stock) ROM , you *should* fail SafetyNet - but there are methods to trick Google and still to pass SafetyNet.
Actually, to flash any such nod (custom ROM or recovery, or root, you first need to unlock Bootloader - and that's the first thing that SafetyNet looks for, but on some phones and ROMs it is possible to fool even the Google's SafetyNet)
That's the reason why thosre apps combine various other methods trying to find (or just to guess) if your phone is 'safe' or not
Some use sofisticated methods looking for su in the path or modified init.rc, or bypass Magisk Hide acting as isolated processes - that way finding the gllitches in MagiskHide making them possible to detect Magisk
But some use very PRIMITIVE guesses:
- If they find TWRP folder, they 'conclude' you 'must' be having TWRP, hence your Bootloader 'must' have been unlocked and you might have been flashed the root or custom ROM, hence they simply declare your phone as 'unsafe' or "rooted'.
But you could take 100% stock and not-modded phone and just create there a folder named TWRP on Internal memory - and your phone will fail their 'safety' pass (but not the Google's SafetyNet)
- Similarly, some just look if they find that the com.topjohbwu.magisk package installed (being Magisk apk, but that is not Magisk as core/service).
Again, you can take 100% stock, not-modded phone and just install there the Magisk apk (maybe, because you wantef to use its built-in SafetyNet checker), and those apps will declare your phone was 'rooted' - which is again total nonsense
On the other side, that is all about statistics. There will be let's say 0.001% of people who do have TWRP folder but not custom TWRP recovery and similarly 0.005% people who do have Magisk app but no Magisk
On the other side, 90% of people who do have custom Recovery will also have TWRP folder and 60% of people with Magisk service/core will also have Magisk app (formerly mngr) - the rest 40% of Magisk users will have hided/obfuscated/repackaged Magisk app (therefore, it cannot be found under the com.tophohnwu.magisk package name)
Hence those apps (and their developers, or better to say those who paid those developers to implemen that GUESSES) can take them rights to declare the phones with TWRP foldersor Magisk app installed as 'unsafe'
Those 1-5 users out of 100000, who by incidence do have TWRP folder (but no custom recovery) or Magisk app (but no Magisk) - bad luck, who cares about them
On the other side, that guesses (since they didn't come up with anything more sofisticated) will make them possible to catch 500 users with TWRP or Magisk, who tricked the Google's SafetyNet (but didn't even think about that primitive possibilities to 'catch' them)
thanks for the explanation, i most likely have a look this evening. Still, most app data will be lost when switching to pixel experience i assume

Please find and read instructions for switching to the (custom) ROM - they can be found elswhere
An important and a MUST step is Formatting Data (that also formats Internal memory). Hence not 'most' but ALL user spps, their settings, your data like photos, contacts, Wifi passwords and everything will be wiped
Read and learn about what and how can be backed up. Good luck
im fully aware, that switching to another rom needs a full wipe and therefore loss of all data if not backup'ed.
I was more hoping one could provid a link and/or recommend something convienent.
And one more point. You must first unlock Bootloader - find where/how, apply for and you will need to wait 7 days
Unlocking bootloader performs Factory reset. However, at that time you are still on MIUI and you can use Xiaomi Cloud to backup and restore upon Factory resetting
(Once you unlock Bootloader, you can make Nandroid backups in TWRP but you cannot restore to custom ROM what you backed-up from MIUI, or vice versa
Once you switch to your custom ROM (and potentially root), you can use some apps for backing up and restore - but avoid the old and outdated Titanium
Hence I don't really see a point in TWRP backups, only just-in-case, for restoring the last working point in case of (soft) brick cases

Thanks alot again for the detailed explanation. This was the detail i was looking for. so basically its impossible to avoid losing app settings which are not saved in cloud and assigned to an app account.
The hint about miui backup/xiaomi cloud comes in handy as well. Also regarding the delayed bootload unlock, if it really takes up to 30 days (as stated on the pixelexperience install guide), maybe the Sony event on 26th brought something interessting

It usually takes (and not from recently) exactly 168 hours = 7 days, no more or less.
There are also threads here on XDA about
Unless Xiaomi just recently changed the policy, but that could also depend on models
SOT = screen on time
