[UPDATED 20080411] - Contact Utilities

Hi All,
I've developed a small app to aid-me on organizing some settings on pocket outlook.
So i have putted it all together and came up with this tool.
1. -Set contact's display name for the contact's view - several formats
2. -Add Birthdays and Anniversaries to calendar;
3. -Set Contacts Picture
4. -Set ringtone based on category.
How it works.
-Install App;
-Go to Settings, provide each one of the necessary values;
-Save <Very important>;
-Go to Menu ->Contacts and select the feature you want;
Has I don't have that much time available, this tool will be updated in an "has i can" schedule.
Please leave any comments, bugs/suggestions, etc.
One bug i have is about setting the displayname (or fileas), some times you have to make a 2nd or 3rd pass in order to apply to all contacts.

-> I've had this problem also, it seem to be related to IE cache Folders, added exception handling to the folder dialog in order to allow the program to continue.
-Added default pictures for contacts (male/female), its calculated with the last letter from firstname (or lastname if fisrts is empy) (if it ends in "a" it will be marked as female picture[Marilyn Monroe else... Elvis (it works in 90% here in portugal ) NOTE: U have to manually put these pictures into contacts folder.

-wait cursor on settings load ( it takes some time).

the boy and girl picture thing, replaced all the existing contact pictures I had... thank god I backed them up first!
and by the way, my friend installed this program on his phone with a chinese rom, and it went pretty well! just to inform you.

Great program, but here is a bug.
On <setup>, under <Ringtones> with <Categories> window pull down. Repeated Busines, Business, Personal, Personl, Business, Business, Friends, Business, Business.....and on and on.
Can you fix this?

oh, no... I used Sprite Backup, sorry...
and no, unfortunately the picture fill function did replace all my contact pics including the already existed ones...

hummm, strange behavior..
can u validate your settings please: u will find a xmlfile in the program dir, open that file and check the values of picture location and picture format.
also check that , for instance, u have a contact and a picture format of firstname_lastname then...
FirsName="John"
MiddleName="ANY"
LastName="Marcus"
there should exist, under picture location, a file named john_marcus.xxx (xxx=jpg,png or gif). I recommend this filename format has in many cases the other fields aren't filled (company, tittle...) mabe the format u choosed is making the prog to look for a filename that is being malformed by the prog (somethng like "_Carlos_Lopes.gif") so please post your format options.
If finding the picture fails, the prog calculates if name is male/female (i'll put an option for this in the future) and applies the defaultF or M picture to the contact.
So, something is failing, i had a prob with the settings xml file that was not beeing updated, so please check your settings.
u can "fix" this picture replacement by deleting the defaultm and defaultf.gif files

I confess that i haven't test that yet, i have no cats in contacts. will fix-it next update (mabe to..day).

hey great app... but had to run it two or three times before it converts all my contacts into firstname-lastname format.. each time it converts just few of the contacts.. havent tried anyother functionalities..

Export via bluetooth to where? (no, it's not possible)
U can still try to send the backup file to any other computer , it's a XML file so i think it can be oppened via MS Excel...have not tried it yet..

Yes, read the posts, i already stated that before, I don't know why that happens the code is the same. just push the button 3 or 4 times and the thing will go .

Android Apps for the Vogue Port

It was suggested that we start a thread specifically for the apps that run well on the Android port to the HTC Touch/Vogue. I personally own an (Sprint=CDMA) HTC Touch Diamond, but upon seeing the maturity level of Android running on the Touch, I immediately went to eBay and picked up the Touch handset...and I am glad I did. The only reason I boot back to winmo is for work calendar (Lotus), Skype (iSkoot kinda sucks), and Podcasts (hopefully we getting DoggCatcher soon).I've found that battery life with Togga on to be about 8-10 hours which I can live with it, but it's a pain to keep toggling if you really need to conserve (but it could be worse )I plan on posting more battery data soon, but need a few more days of collection. Hopefully we can find a more permanent way of managing the data connection with balance for battery life.

The apps I have found to run well on my CDMA with dzo/f00bar's (much respect) latest files:
-Scoreboard - I'm not that big of a sports fan, but this app is slick!
-aLastFM - Just got permission to post the link from the developer. Thanks Oleg!!
-Stocker - Simple but effective stock app, but no graphs. If someone could find a better one...
-Weather - Simple, but effective. Multiple Cities, current and forecast, with menu link to detailed outlook including radar from Undergroud Weather.
-AnyCut -Great for making shortcuts to just about any screen in the OS, especially useful for Battery and Sounds&Display
-TextEasy - for sending a text to multiple contacts, until someone can get a hold of ChomperSMS or K9SMS (K9Mail I have not gotten to work either, we need a better mail app, the native client doesn't even recognize URLS, wtf?!)
-OIFileManager - It's the only one I've tried, so can't comment on the others, but there are several out there. UPDATE: I tried out Astro and Glance. I liked Astro, but after a day it stopped working for me and gives me a force quit. I prefer Glance over OI FileManager, it's on 4shared I believe.
-OIFlashlight - amazing how handy this comes in
-OINewsReader - No frills RSS aggregator
-ShopSavvy - Did you say "We'll match any price"?...but be fast with your fingers, camera is not fine enough to capture the barcode

I wanted to add SMS PopUp as another great app. You can find it along with a bunch of other APKs here. One of the G1 owners that grabbed all of the apps and is hosting them for download.

The Meebo app is well worth a look - look for it on 4shared.com. Lets you IM on just about any IM network (Yahoo, MSN, AIM etc). IMs appear in the notification bar while you are in any other program. Great stuff.

I believe im the only person hosting the meebo.apk at the moment.

i installed and signed into my MSN account, however, just a white screen shows up. No list of contacts, etc. No menu options other than to add another account or sign off. Not exactly useful (at least this version). Is anyone using this successfully?
EDIT: I received a chat, and that gave me a buddy online, maybe no one on my list was signed on at the time I first checked.
Also, it doesnt remember your username and password, which is annoying because it randomly closed on me after tapping the notification in the bar during a chat session today. I'll keep looking for a better app or updated version.

What about an updated version of Shopsavvy. Mine keeps saying there is a new version, but of course we can't update off the marketplace.

I'm looking for the Locale application. Even though we don't have GPS running, Locale still alows profile switching based on time and days of the week, which would be useful for office vs. non-office settings. If someone could post this I would appreciate it!

If they are in the AndroidApps folder then they should be installed already. I found that sometimes icons don't show up to launch the program, however. This is where AnyCut comes in handy. Use AnyCut to search in "Activities" to find your app. If you are not seeing it in this list then you may have to "manually" install the app. Open a file browser such as OI File Manager or Glance and navigate to your AndroidApps folder. Click on the .apk file and it should launch teh app installer.

I am very interested in the Scoreboard app, I got it running fine, but the other day the game I added to my favorite never really gave me updates until the game was over by a few hours.

There's been a couple apps I liked that didn't fit our screen plus having to reinstall android files often I lose all my saved info so it doesn't work out for me. Sprint needs to hurry up with an HTC Android phone.

Maybe a stupid question, not sure... Why can't someone extract the android market application from the G1 to be used on other phones? Seems a bit odd of Google to limit the market to only a specific phone.

There is a discussion about the marketplace on the big long forum. The marketplace is not open source. They're talking about the commands and encryption and such for it. I'd think it's not open because they plan on having pay for apps but I could be wrong

Still missing a few features.. like the ability to call contacts that are only in your GC account, but still very good.

I noticed this also. i resolved by changing my time zone in settings. Only problem is that this then modifies your "synced" time with your carrier, it adjusts + or - according to your time zone, so you have to comensate...each time you boot. Not by any means an elegant solution, but if you need realtime scores this is the answer. Probably better off sticking with NHL.com

I tried the "Ebay.apk" from 4Shared, but it doesn't display properly. The tabs extend all the way to the bottom of the other screen which is a common problem for us vogue port users.

[Q] Which ones are bloatware?

After going through the run around to get my phone rooted so I can removed the bloatware that came pre-installed on it (and after all this trouble I will say that I will never get another phone with MotoBlur on it ever again) I realize that I am ignorant in what could be considered it and what I may think is but is vital to the system.
*before I list what I think is bloatware I will say that I have backed up EVERYTHING on my phone so if something was to go wrong, I can always restore -- I also have the option to freeze the application, but I want to free up space on my phone as well*

First off let me be clear. ... i am not an expert. If i was i would not have a motoblur phone. I am just a chump who ended up with one. I am someone trying to make the best of what i have. Don't do what i say or you may break your phone. All i can say is what i have tried and kind of what happened. My shorthand below is
Rok means i removed it and nothing unexpected seemed to happen.
? Means i have not tried it and or i think it would be risky to remove.
N means i just don't think its ok to remove.
I go into a little more detail on some of them.
Bottom line is if it has blur in its name then removing it is taking your phones life in your own hands.
My son found a stock rom that i have reflashed my phone with after i broke it by removing wrong stuff. I don't have the same phone as you though. Hunt and find a stock rom so you can fix your flubs.
NOTE: use ti backups and freeze system apps. If its a mistake just unfreeze. Removing and restoring system apps may not work out like you think....take it from someone who found out the hard way. If after freezing a while all seems ok then think about removing.

If you get Titanium Backup you can 'freeze' any app that you are thinking about removing and try the phone out. A lot easier than fixing it if you remove one you need.
Edit: Sorry - i see that TB has already been mentioned.

Experiments after Froyo
I have the Motorola Flipside, and I actually like the phone (which I selected based on wanting a full hardware keyboard), but the MAJOR flaw is the VERY limited internal phone storage. If it wasn't for that flaw, I would have little interest in replacing the phone. As it is, I have struggled with keeping the phone useful for about a year and a half, but plan to replace it very soon. I actually even like SOME of the MotoBlur features, especially the way it consolidates all of my contacts, but I really only use it for that.
I updated to Froyo during Motorola's smoke testing. The update was welcome, but AT&T and Motorola both loaded EVEN MORE bloat which just exacerbated the space issue. So I have my own list of stuff that I have deleted, which includes the social MotoBlur stuff but keeps the account management and contact sync features.
I'll try to get back here within the next couple of days to list out exactly how I've got things configured. Many of the apps have been changed, consolidated, or dropped, so I'll provide a complete list based on the 2.2.2 update.

i can say u need the home one. if you delete it your home page dissapears and its a pita to get back.

If youre rooted, try link2sd to save the limited spaced on the phone. I used it while I had this phone and never got memory full with over 60 apps.

Yes, link2sd is great, I use and recommend it.
However, it is NOT sufficient to deal with the insanely limited space on the FlipSide. If you do a factory reset with the latest ROM (2.2.2), you will end up with something like 12MB of space. These days there are about 7 updates to the core applications, and you do not have enough space to load the updates.
To make space, you have to use the Link2SD feature of "convert system app to user app" so that it can be linked. But 12MB is not enough space for link2sd to convert any apps.
So load up Titanium backup, too, and delete some AT&T bloatware, then start converting system apps and linking them. This will be enough space for most people. My biggest problem is that I have about 1,500 contacts (I am an activist involved in politics). They take up about 40 MB of data space, and data cannot be linked to SD (really BAD design, IMHO). The only way I am able to make this phone useful is to remove about 90% of my contacts AND do the delete bloatware + link2sd stuff. The phone is functional at that point, but of course much less useful since I have to keep my contact list off-line. Even though I've got my most frequent contacts loaded, I often get phone calls or texts and don't even know who it is.

Just install cm7, you have lots of free space and no bloatware to remove! Plus its gingerbread so it gives better battery life. I use it and combined with link2sd, it makes this phone half usable

Doesn't always work. Mine will not give me the recovery access needed to install cm7 so that's not always an option. Plus most people want a fully functioning phone and not being able to use 3g and receive phone calls without rebooting or freezing is not, in my eyes anyway, fully functioning.

The link actually says it's for the Sage. One of the guys trying it says:
my findings are... the accelerometer does not work... meaning the screen doesn't change orientation when you turn the phone...
and
the telephone dials out... or rings when called... however... when it attempts to connect... it reboots the phone...
and
the camera is still broken

Sage is the developer name for the flipside, like motus is the backflip, olympus is atrix etc. That is correct. But I agree. If most important things aren't working, is there any point in having cm7?

In this same forum as this, the general flipside section, there is a newbie install guide. Use it...

Camera seems to work fine for me, the rebooting on call is an issue where you need to force 2G as it has problems with US 3G bands. I don't recall problems with the accelerometer, but to be honest I only use landscape with the keyboard open, which triggers the rotation just fine.
I've moved on to a Captivate Glide now, but I still have the Flipside running CM7 around for a backup and VoIP phone, I can dig it out and toy with it later to check the sensor for sure.

Just checked, opened a browser and rotation via sensor worked perfectly. If you set ADW Launcher to persist in memory, it won't have the option to rotate based on sensor, so it's possible he thought the sensor wasn't working. I have no idea why, I assume it's a bug, but it's that way on any ADW afaik.

The massive contact list is why you have so little free space initially, I'd assume... A fresh flash of the latest .sbf had something like 60 MB free, iirc. It might actually be possible to manually symlink your contact database to the sd card, I've not tried it personally but a quick google seems to imply it's possible. Since you've got link2sd set up, it should be fairly straightforward.

I am an excited entrepreneur/developer, worked and developed the App all by myself
The app is free and I would like the world to enjoy it
I am posting here for 2 reason.

All of my friends are already running "alpha" for me on their personal devices.... but it`s only the tip of the iceberg from a technical point of view.

So.... some details:
My App is Named: “PicAround”.
Basically PicAround is a "Mobile Camera App That Instantly Shares Everyone’s Event Pictures"
The App tries to reduce the hassle of getting your pictures from other people that were present at the event as you did. no need for emails Facebook, Dropbox, etc,
and it is easy to use:
Step 1. Select the event your are at from a list of local events (GPS Based)
Step 2. Capture the moment with the PicAround camera!
Everybody’s pictures taken at the event will be saved to a shared album instantly!
I believe it will match perfectly for large scale events, such as weddings, concerts, football games and so on..

I will also post a blog post soon enough about the process of developing the app - the server side.... tools and so on....

1) Why do you force your users to use Facebook?
1.1) App opened and the first thing that poped up was Facebook login screen. I closed it and then.... that's it. I couldn't do anything else with the app. Just saw the logo. Had to leave the app and come back again to,, again, see the Facebook screen.
1.2) I was shown the Facebook login screen, asking to entenr my e-mail and password. I do have Facebook installed in my phone, so I would expect just to press OK and seamlessly log into Facebook, without having to enter my credentials... are you using API 3.0?
Give me a shout if you need some help with point 1.2, I have implemented it.

Hi, thanks for the relay and remarks:
I would like to respond to some of your remarks and maybe you will have some tip for me.
The events are public, meaning: all people at the area of the event can take pictures (currently there are no restriction).
So the least I am doing is to display a layout over the image with the name of the person who took it.
If I would create my own unique login mechanism (leaving the technical Burden aside) - users will be able to pick an unreal name - which I think is unfair to the users with real names
I could add login with google or some other login sdks available - do you think it will make it better? would you like to login with a different network instead?
In addition - In the future - I could use the social goodies Facbook offers (with the user approval of course) Which I would not be able to do without.
Currently (and in the future) I am not doing anything "bad" with the user info - only using it to display his name over his pictures at the event album.
As for SDK 3.0 - I was trying to use it - but is seems to fail - probably because the new SDK does not support android 2.1(update) versions (SDK < 8 not support) - it is not official (or at least I could not find a reference for it) - so I submitted a defect to Facebook about that.
(cannot post the url for the defect yet - 8 more to go - but I can email it if needed.)
I do not want to leave 2.1 behind as long as I have the option (my phone is 2.1 nexus one!! )
Would love any tips about this issue. (I have tried hard to use the native sdk).
about the timing of when to popup the facebook login screen...
If I would not do that immediately - then there is a chance that exactly at the moment the user is trying to take a picture - I would have to popup the login screen - sound bad to me.
(On the other hand - I am pretty sure - nobody will have his first try of the app - during an event - he would probably try it at home first).
What do you think about this? should I postpone the login screen to a later time? or maybe I could show an explanation to the user before the login, for the reasons I want her/him to login with facebook?

I've just purchased a OnePlus 8

Hi all,
I currently have a OnePlus 5, purchased when it was first announced. It's still doing sterling service, but is now getting to be 3 years old. I was in the market for a new phone as the OP5's GPS is not that reliable (at least, not on my phone) and I wanted something different. I was looking at the OP 7T from last year. Seemed OK.
However, I watched the intro from OnePlus yesterday and was struck by three points:
1. It has the latest of everything. Therefore, it should have fewer hardware bugs (e.g. GPS)
2. It has 5G - which I can get on my current Vodafone contract
3. It will get support from OnePlus for longer.
What finally swayed my decision was the offer, for the same list price, of a box set with the new headphones and a case included - oh, and delivery by tomorrow.
So, I bit the bullet and ordered one - I went for the top model 8 (12Gb/25Gb) as I want the storage but I don't believe the extra £200 for the top model 8 Pro is worth it.
I'll report back here when it arrives.

It arrived today in an enourmous box. What I ordered was one of the early 'pop up' offers which, for the list price, gives me two extra bumper cases (cyan and black) as well as a clear one plus the new OnePlus Z headphones. It came with 51% battery charge and, when set up, immediately did an OS upgrade to the latest.

I ordered it from OnePlus themselves in the UK, from their web site. There was something on there about early orders get a 'pop up' box - which I managed to get.
As to shipping overseas, sorry - you'll have to ask them. Go to www.oneplus.com/uk and see what you can get.

I also did a "OnePlus Switch" to move my apps and data across from my old phone. It all went very smoothly.
I only have two issues
Minor one - I lost all my old conversations from WhatsApp.
Not so minor one (but not OnePlus's fault). I have an app which connects to a camera at my fathers house so I can see when he is sitting down and that he is OK. I've forgotten the password so I have to keep my old phone, just for that app!

Regarding whatsApp, if you log back in from your old device and do a backup for WhatsApp, then delete WhatsApp from your new phone and re-dowload it again, during the setup of WhatsApp, you'll get the option to restore.
I do it all the time and you can even choose if you wanna backup just chats or include photos or videos (or both) as well.
Works like a charm so long as you have cloud space.
Regarding you second issue with the camera app, can't you just select *forgot password "?
For future reference, I highly recommend using one of the password saving apps.
Hope the Whatsapp solution works for you.

No, unfortunately there is no way to say you've forgotten the password. It's a cheap chinese monitoring camera and the app doesn't have that option.

To restore WhatsApp data you need to copy the msgstore file which will be in WhatsApp > Databases folder.
Clear all WhatsApp app data from new device or reinstall the WhatsApp.
Then Copy the latest msgstore file (after backup) from old phone and then paste the file to the exact same location in your new OnePlus.
Now during the setup it will fetch the data.

I did that - closed off and restarted WhastsApp (without a reinstall) and it did NOT see the old data.

If Database folder is not there then you can manually create database folde and add the msgstore file in it.
It will not detect chat until you clear WhatsApp data or reinstall WhatsApp.

Congratulations you got yourself a punchhole. I'll have to pass this time. Bought the red magic 5g. Yes i rather have the worst software before i have a hole in my screen.

My OnePlus 8 arrived today for me is it a upgrade when you come from normal 7 like me. The scrolling smoothness on 90hz is really nice and way better compare to the normal 7. The curved screen is not that bad as I thought. The punch hole camera is needing to get used.But all in all to me is a nice phone which runs pretty fast and smooth. So will see whether I can like the punch hole or not, if not I sent the phone back :good:
