Keep an eye on your charger! - Google Pixel Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi guys just a precautionary here, today I was sitting in my room with my girlfriend to suddenly see a flash and hear a pop, something inside the pixel wall plug exploded and it was smelling of burning, on removal of the plug I noticed that there was electrical skid marks!

Sounded like a capacitor blowing and there was more than sufficient surge protection in place.
Additionally, the phone wasn't even plugged in at this point, just the plug itself!

This issue needs to be reported to Google.

Don't worry, I got straight onto my carrier in the UK (EE) and they have a special department for potentially dangerous handsets and accessories. I have sent the image over to them and I'm waiting to hear further action. At the moment my girlfriend is sitting without a charger so we'll see what they come back with and I'll ask them if they passed it on.
If that fails, I'll try find a way to report it but I doubt there is a straightforward way to do that since the huge scale of Google.

You can swipe left within settings and get connected to a Google support representative quite quickly. This needs to be reported directly to Google from the consumer. They honor warranty no matter where the handset was purchased. Albeit the method in which it is resolved depends on where it was purchased, but they are very helpful.

Go ahead, report to Google. Just do it!

Reported it last night to Google via the method mentioned, they didn't seem to have a care in the world and only offered for me to get a replacement unit if I purchased a new one and they would reimburse the price. Tried to mention my safety concern but just got brushed off with "a specialist will be in touch"

Dont forget that EE will have a direct Merch channel to Google. So will beable to get a bit more sense out of them about it
If not, you can complain further up the chain. CEOemail will help if you need CEO email addys
But thats only if you have to complain further

I'm trying to sell it, but it's pretty hard to sell since you can't charge it!

Ouch!
If you have mad soldering skillz, you could try taking the phone apart, then buying a new USB jack from Mouser Electronics or DigiKey. That's assuming that HTC didn't use a proprietary connector and that the PCB wasn't damaged when the connector broke.
Otherwise, I'd say it's time to test your mad Google skillz to find a repair shop.
Maybe I can sell it here? Someone has to know how to fix it...
How exactly did this happen?
When I go to bed I charge my phone, and usually plug it in, in the dark.
I'm always worried about screwing it up so I do it very gently.
I'm the same way...
My cousin pushed the charger port in or something when I was sleeping... I woke up pissed. Went and bought a Sidekick 3, they're nice phones too.
Wow...I did the EXACT same thing ^_^ I just sent it in the Cingular customer support and they repaired it. Since they determined that it was from physical damage they made me pay for repairs but it was less than half of the full retail price so not too bad ^_^
Pocket PC Techs list USB port replacement as a standard repair for $60 (with a exception note regarding possible extensive/internal damage). You can check it out at http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~HTC_Wizard-511~area~repairs~item~REP-USBCON01.htm
That happened to mine when i dropped it off the desk with the chrging cable in, landing with full force on it.
Once you manage to get the stupid thing open (they like to make it tricky!) it's easy enough to re-solder. The pads are very close together though, so make sure none accidentally connect to their neighbour.

Yes, it is unfortunate, but a lot of the manufacturers are using chromed plastic now a days. This is the second one I have seen with an issue of having the chrome come off. Not really too bad considering the number sold, but I know, bad if it happens to you. Get a replacement and happy Thriving.
I saw a post on Toshiba's site where a guy had bought two Toshiba-branded screen protectors for his Thrive. Well he went to remove one and it left the entire screen covered in a sticky, adhesive mess. Seems they can't even get those right either, let alone the dysfunctional device it's supposed to be protecting.
I can't divorce this company fast enough.

Do you actually own a Thrive? All I see you doing is flaming the unit and Toshiba. Im not defending them if they wronged you more power to you... but I feel skeptical. Im just sayin...

Nexus 4 - Bulging Battery

My wife has been complaining about N4 continually rebooting and battery draining. On inspection I noticed the case was separating from the phone. After removing the back, I was shocked to see the battery had bulged. I immediately contacted LG - they were worthless. Told me I had to send it in to get fixed and they would charge me. I then called Google and they were way more helpful. The Rep was very concerned and immediately created a case to replace the phone ASAP.
Here are photos. Notice how the stress the battery was creating popped off the little plastic surrounding the buttons.

Curious... I have not seen such a thing since my last old Siemens phone... Bulging batteries apparently were a frequent problem with those...
Had something to do with the charging electronics, I think.
One question though, wouldn't opening the phone void the warranty? Or doesn't Google have a problem with that? Which country are you in, if I may ask?

I'm in USA. I'm not aware of opening the phone voiding the warranty. It isn't hard to do with a T5 torx. There maybe warranty stickers if you go deeper into the phone though. Though I don't think it is under warranty anyway. Pretty sure it's being replaced simply because the seriousness of the issue. A bulging battery made of lithium is just shy of it turning into a ball of flames.
I got mine through T-Mobile. I have battery issues with mine. Charges to about 50% and won't go any further. Then it would run down really fast. I called T-Mo and typos them and they agreed to send me a replacement.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

It is really weird.
After a night with my friends at a bar, I remarked the second day that this had happened to my phone. I DO have a case, it did NOT fall and there's no screen protector on. Seems like it's an bubble under the screen! Also, there's no crack on the phone which is really weird.
PS: Being dark outside, I can'T even tell when this happened during the night.

that is strange, did you leave in the sun by any chance before hand? looks like a defected problem on the external surface of the phone are you still under warranty?
Device defect, take it back.
Yeah still under warranty and I didn't leave it under the sun except one time in July! It was in my car and it said phone cannot charge too hot or something like that! But this was a long time ago and I don't think it could be related!

Ah I know exactly what happened.. It's got a skin disease.
I just received this from them today. Don't know what it should mean. Covered by the waranty or not? They're not too clear about it. Anyone?

I would think it would be covered by the warranty, but what does it say about cosmetic stuff? I would make sure to tell them something else is wrong with it that's covered by warranty so you get a new one.
did you hear anything back about this?
I have the same problem and I took it to an AT&T store and the guy there said he had seen it multiple times. He also couldnt give me a new phone then and there.
What did you do to get it fixed/replaced?
I am still under warranty.
To be honest, I didn't try anything yet. Everything involved sending the phone and waiting which I didn't have time to do. Also, they didn't specify nothing about the cost. Everything was going to be determined there. So I'm just going to wait till my finals are over and I'll go directly to the service center and see there. My cell phone company couldn't exchange it for me neither.
PS can you post a pic of your screen? How did it happen in your case?

Service center in Montréal repaired it for free. Just in case someone else has this problem

NOOO! What is happening to my screen?!?

Out of nowhere I got one line. Then a few weeks later another and now there are 3!
Anyone else experienced this and do you know the cause/fix?
Problem is I bought my phone (G935F) through eGlobal in China. I had faith in Samsung as I never had any issues with their products. Now that I ended up with my first faulty product, I am faced with sending it back to China. Unless Samsung UK will cover the warranty...No idea how it works.

Yeah same problem the LCD is coming loose I bet if you push down hard towards the top of phone by the "G" in Samsung under the ear piece it will go away. Have you dropped it out day on it? Either but parts on Amazon and learn the repair or pay hefty to have it done at a shop. I'd honestly first off putting a heat gun on it while there's added pressure and see if it will re glue it self. I had a bunch of lines on mine and it cleared up a lot but unfortunately not all lines. Good luck
Thanks for the reply. Yes, one of the lines go away if I press in exactly that spot.
I'm not brave enough to start a DIY repair - since it's under warranty, I don't see why I would have to pay anything. It was never dropped - I cherish it like my life depends on it!

Download a pixel filter from the playstore to prevent any new ones from appearing especially useful for phones that have screens on for a great length of time helps safe battery and screen quality.

Too late. Today the screen completely died. Phone works fine (I can take calls), but screen is just black.
Went to the Samsung help centre and they said I need to send it back to the seller (not a UK model).
So back to china at my own expense - or bite the bullet and pay for the fix, but I have no idea what that might be
Gutted....
Its a faulty screen. exactly same happened to me. first the lines then screen completely died. Had to rush to Samsung service centre. They had to change the whole screen. Luckily mine was in warranty so got the screen changed free of cost. All the best !
