It is not true that Amazon version of the Moto G4 cannot be unlocked. I did mine just yesterday, following instructions in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/how-to/how-to-root-g4-fix-bootable-attempted-t3417592. I have it both bootloader unlocked and rooted. Just follow the instructions closely. Cheers.

Do you have the 16 or 32gb model? You're sure you had the one with ads?

Inside this guide say:
NOTE: As of 7/18/2016, Amazon ad-subsidised Moto G 4th Gen devices cannot be bootloader unlocked, therefore they cannot be rooted. Sorry, Lollipop and newer Android security changes pretty much put an end to that.

if you have 32gb model you can try with success, but if you have 16gb model, maybe you want to sit down and cry
I have 16gb model and i cant unlocked it, i tried..
So, if you don't have bootloader unlocked don't try to root your phone or change your rom.
trust me, i tried to made an update via fastboot to nougat and i made a beautiful brick..

Mine is the 32gb model. Even though it says that it cannot be bootloader unlocked in the thread, once you go to the Motorola link provided and enter the details of your phone if you get a verification code your phone CAN be unlocked. It is what I did, and was surprised that I actually got the code. From there, everything was pretty straightforward.

I can confirm that my xt1625, 16gb ad supported, now has an unlocked bootloader. I got this phone just over a month ago. Maybe something changed in the latest revision? Maybe someone made some big mistakes during manufacturing?

Anyone in the US getting the OTA Nougat update for the XT1625? was hoping it was coming soon...

Nope. Moto will not unlock any cricket or att moto phones. Jcase has an exploit for you but it won't work if it comes with 4.4.4 already. And it costs $25.

Locked or unlocked is irrelevant. You just can't be rooted or have a custom recovery.
This is from my recent experience of the recent OTA for the XT1034.
Sunshine tool did NOT work on XT1045 from cricket as it has 4.4.4 already. No way to downgrade it either if it is like the other moto g from cricket.
Yeah Cricket seems to be non unlockable
WTF!!!!
So i called Cricket Customer Care and i was told that i would have to be a customer for 6 months in order to unlock my bootloader and a Cricket Retail Rep told me 4 months. Not sure who to believe and if its even true, how would cricket even make it happen???
hopefully the bootloader will be unlocked soon :/
NEED Bootloader Unlocked for Moto G XT1045
Totally disgusted that the bootloader cannot be unlocked for this device. I'm willing to pay for someone to get it unlocked. Second Cricket device in a row that cannot be rooted for me. Well this one can but technically can't without the bootloader. Someone please help! Going to send this phone to the graveyard if not.
Does anyone have a cricket firmware for 4.4.2 or 4.4.3? Do we know for sure the Moto G Cricket can't be downgraded?

Updated software today - ads are back :(

I did the big update today for the newest software patch available for the Motorla G4.
My ads are back unfortunately.
Does anyone know if there's a tutorial to remove the ads for the latest version of the software update?
Thanks!!

I don't recall anyone getting an Amazon update. Sadly you did answer a question I'm sure all the Amazon G4 owners had.
I have the same experience - can we use the same process as before, or use the just posted factory image?
Was you rooted with unlocked bootloader? It just appeared for me as well. I want to update but don't want to relock bootloader but I do still have the original code from moto to unlock it I think.

If you're rooted you can't install an OTA but it doesn't matter if you're unlocked. Once you've used the unlock code from MOTO you're always unlocked and won't have to enter it again. If for some way they've managed to relock it on the Amazon ad phones then I would imagine they've also blocked it from a future unlock. In the past though once unlocked the bootloader is always unlocked.
I'm not locked to any specific carrier as far as I know.. purchased this off of Amazon for $125.. USA version.

Is it possible to root a Galaxy S7 (G930V)?

Hello Everyone!
I have a Verizon Galaxy S7 and I am wanting to root it! But when I tried it did not work so I just put stock rom file back on it. I read online that my boot loader is blocking the root? I did update to 6.0.1 and my version is G930VVRS4APH1

Yes. and after 2 bricked S7's and a 100 rabbit holes leading me to who knows where, I finally got it.. give me a day or so and ill post the link and how to
The thread Sir_Eagle posted is the correct one for anything root. If something looped, then you either did not meet the prerequisites of the guide or did not follow every step of the guide. The bootloader on this variant requires every image to be signed, this is why the only root we currently have is via a SIGNED AND LEAKED engineer bootloader. Without this, there is no root on this variant. If you DO want to root, follow the link Sir_Eagle provided (but realize it comes with an outdated hacky kernel that has known issues), or go with stock. Up to you
The S7 I should have bought.

Buy the European version of the phone with the Exynos processor instead of the US version with the Qualcomm one. Problem is that phone likely won't work with any of the carriers here in the USA. Or you could move to Europe.

Snapdragon variants aren't unlockable (exception being one hardware different model than ours). You can get an international samsung chipset variant with unlocked bootloader but not a US snapdragon one.

Thanks. I don't have to worry about that for a while, since I just upgraded. I don't like the idea of no root, but it is what it is. Guess I'll check the device recommendation threads next time.
A few other questions that occur (in case I add more devices to my account or pick up an additional service):
1. Aside from an international there a (quality) phone/brand that will allow rooting in the U.S.?
2. What caveats can be expected when using an international device (presumably, I can get one compatible with whatever carrier I choose)
I guess it's conceivable that I could buy one of these 'rootable' phones and either add it to my Verizon acct or replace one of my current lines.
I miss root, particularly the ability to create nandroids and Titanium backups. Oh, and accessing the entire file system.

Amazon E4 Bootloader Unlock/Root?

Is there a way to root the amazon ads version of this phone or are we stuck in the same boat as the verizon version?
Bump
I've been reading up on the Moto G4 Play forums and I am wondering if initroot is possible with the Moto E4. I've run the sunshine APK and it says the pretests have passed and that temproot is needed to continue. So would initroot + sunshine = unlock? Or are sunshine and initroot patched. Do I have this all wrong or??? Would love some input, thanks.
EDIT: Appears SunShine doesn't support the E line of devices, may still work though...
this tethered vulnerability was fixed back in June ...moto e4 comes out of the box with higher than June security patch .......

Not a chance. Zero incentive for Amazon to change the status quo.
its been a few months since ive tried to unlock my amazon e4's bootloader, so i tried it again... IT WORKED. I bought this phone on Aug. 26, 2017...so not quite a year old, but i was able to unlock it following the instructions on motos website.
It figures too...I just picked up a Pixel XL for $200 too...oh well. If you guys are still interested in unlocking, give it a try now before Amazon or Moto change their minds!

I am truly shocked! The cost/effort to maintain an exclusion list of device identifiers must have outweighed the business benefit (Amazon ecosystem lockin) assuming it was not an inadvertent disclosure. That leaves Verizon (XT1767) as the only major that can't be bootloader unlocked.
I noticed the price gap between 'prime' and 'standard' variants has narrowed of late - perhaps in recognition of revenue loss due to lack of lock screen ads (Amazon policy change) and/or more freedom to root and remove Amazon exclusive content - aka 'bloat'.
got excited, but sad to report it didn't work for me.
